44 years ago today, I was elected to the Massachusetts state senate. I graduated in June with a BA in Government, and defeated a Democrat incumbent by nine votes out of over 60,000. The recount took days; paper ballots then, but i finished with a 126 vote margin. We found one block of votes in Fitchburg a Democrat city, recorded as 9 for Ward, 11 for Hall. It was reversed. I was the first republican elected in this 4-1 D district since 2938. I was reelected four times with large margins, and retired undefeated in 1982.

Watching the returns last Tuesday, I was very glad not to be on the ballot or campaigning. ~Bob
