This is an important book by a very brave scholar. Academics, “journalists” and politicians to include Barrack Obama, tout Muslim Spain as a flowering of religious tolerance, culture, and freedom for women. Dr. Fernandez-Morera destroys this myth. It, of course, has not been well-received by academia, where the desire to see Islam as peaceful and tolerant trumps all facts. Through painstaking research and numerous quotations from both Muslims and Christians at the time, this book reveals the real truth. Then, as now, the Muslims weren’t even tolerant of other Muslims who might believe a bit differently. (Neither were Christians and Jews at the time.) There are chapters on Muslims, Christians, Jews, Women, slaves and culture, with the conclusions well-documented. As it was so shall it be.
