Random Thoughts for April 2021

 Random Thoughts for April 2021

Robert A. Hall

Feel free to post or forward.

Health update: I’ve been notified that the VA has scheduled me for a hip replacement May 6. They were concern because I’m immune suppressed from my lung transplant in 2013. About 2% of joint replacements get infected, which could be fatal for me. But without it I have a 100% chance of living in increasing pain and decreasing mobility. My surgeon has done both hips and a shoulder in another lung transplant patient without issues. I think it’s worth the risk.

I was so excited that I sent an email to some family and friends with the typo, “Him Replacement” in the subject line. My friend Peter who was in the Massachusetts Legislature with me wrote back: “I assume you meant hip. There isn’t a surgeon in this world who can replace Robert Hall!”

Some time ago I write that young men talk about their sex lives, middle age men talk about their jobs, and old men talk about their health. I definitely fit into the last category.

Hollywood should give back the millions they made on Dr. Seuss movies.

"What our generation has forgotten is that the system of private property is the most important guaranty of freedom, not only for those who own property, but scarcely less for those who do not. It is only because the control of the means of production is divided among many people acting independently that nobody has complete power over us, that we as individuals can decide what to do with ourselves. If all the means of production were vested in a single hand, whether it be nominally that of 'society' as a whole or that of a dictator, whoever exercises this control has complete power over us."

Racism existed before history when the first person noted that a stranger had slightly different color skin. Sexism has existed since men discovered that being physically stronger than women, they could impose their will on them. Modern western civilization is the first society to try to eliminate them. It won’t be done by banning comic characters.

Biden has no mandate – here's why he was really hired and how his left-wing agenda will backfire

This is one of several articles about Joe's intention to remake the USA like FDR did.  Interestingly, only one of them mentioned in passing the "detail" that a 3 trillion dollar package to overhaul things, on top of the nearly 4 trillion already printed and distributed in special Covid relief packages (of which a minority of the money went to actual Covid relief) just might bring on something called inflation.

Anybody besides me notice the increase in costs of all kinds of consumer goods?  I have news... you cannot just print trillions of dollars to pour into the economy and not have an effect on the worth of everyone's money over time.  Anyone with money just sitting in the bank is watching it decrease in purchasing value, buying property (also at rapidly increasing prices) has become rampant in many parts of the country.

It remains to be seen how far more new massive spending moves can be pushed, there's at least a chance that it might not pass in the Senate.  We can only hope.  Meanwhile, I can hardly wait for Joe's next press conference, so we can watch him read carefully from notes and the teleprompter again.  But I have a feeling it may be a while before his handlers schedule another one.

Biden’s Weakness On The World Stage Is Dangerous

Biden’s Weakness On The World Stage Is Dangerous

Race and False Hate Crime Narratives

We have the media and others frothing at the mouth to prove that White racism is the most terrible thing going in our society, that it's destroying people every minute of every day, and is hardly any better today than when the KKK was doing monthly lynchings.  It's utter nonsense, racism does not exist at anything remotely like those levels, and, BTW, what racism there is in society today is not limited to only those with one kind of skin.  The facts are not hard to find, the numbers are there, but no one is going to refer to the real facts, the hateful propaganda is going to continue to be broadcast at high volume every day.  Again, if you want to break a society apart, this is the way to do it.

This MUST be fought in any and every way anyone can think of.

CALIFORNIA PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS RETURN TO IN-PERSON TEACHING, BUT ONLY FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS

CALIFORNIA PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS RETURN TO IN-PERSON TEACHING, BUT ONLY FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS

Excerpt: Over a year after fifteen days to flatten the curve, there are still school districts in this country that aren't doing in-person teaching. Meltdowns from frustrated parents are common. Depression and suicide in students are the pandemic we aren't allowed to talk about. But the teachers' unions viewed this as an opportunity to hold parents hostage until their demands are met (allegedly) and regularly claim it's not safe for them to teach in person. They're also aided by a president who is bought and paid for by the teachers' unions. Again, allegedly. San Diego is one of those districts, but teachers are starting to teach students in person again! No, not San Diego students, but illegal immigrants who are here as part of Joe Biden's border crisis. If there is a better example of the disconnect between the far left and the American people over immigration, I can't think of one. Per Fox News: (Everybody knows illegal are COVID-free. ~Bob)

From Soft Liberalism to Iron-Fisted Leftism in Today's U.S. Military

Here it is, just how awful it's gotten, how terribly dangerous for the future of the Republic.  I can only admire this man for telling it like it is, but I wonder what will happen to his career in the Marine Reserves now.

This kind of what amounts to intimidation of those in the service to shut up, go along with the program, and turn in anyone who says or implies disagreement with the broadcast policies, is how you rip the guts out of an organization.  We can only hope that the great majority of officers and NCOs will lock their jaws, sit through the classes, and refuse to sip the damn KoolAid and certainly not start turning anyone in.  We can only pray that somehow our beloved Corps will survive all this with a core of true Marines to keep the ideals alive until a better day comes.  Maybe in 2022, or certainly in 2024.

S/F and heaven  help us.

Politico: Secret Service interfered with Hunter Biden gun incident, says new report

Excerpt: Secret Service intervened in a case involving a missing gun owned by President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden, in which agents pressured the store owner who sold the gun to turn over paperwork involving the sale in an apparent cover-up, sources told Politico. In October 2018, Hunter Biden and Hallie Biden — the wife of Joe Biden’s late son Beau – were involved in an incident in which Hallie took Hunter’s gun and threw it in a garbage can behind a grocery store. The incident led to an investigation by police who were concerned because of the trash bin’s proximity to a high school, according to a police report obtained by Politico.  Must read: The Dream of the '90s Died in Portland

A well written, reasonably detailed discussion of how Portland went for an up & coming great young city to join to the utter disaster of today. A triumph of progressivism morphing into insane extremism and the utter failure of leadership allowing chaos and destruction to become the new norm. One really wonders how long this can go on before the city is bankrupt. It's a serious read, but I recommend it as an interesting learning

As one senator put it:

I’ve been in the Senate for a long time, and there are plenty of times I would have loved to change this rule or that rule to pass a bill or to confirm a nominee I felt strongly about. But I didn’t, and it was understood that the option of doing so just wasn’t on the table. You fought political battles; you fought hard; but you fought them within the strictures and requirements of the Senate rules. Despite the short-term pain, that understanding has served both parties well, and provided long-term gain. Adopting the “nuclear option” would change this fundamental understanding and unbroken practice of what the Senate is all about.  Senators would start thinking about changing other rules when they became ‘inconvenient.’ Instead of two-thirds of the vote to change a rule, you’d now have precedent that it only takes a bare majority.  Altering Senate rules to help in one political fight or another could become standard operating procedure, which, in my view, would be disastrous.

That senator, of course, was Joe Biden.

Leftists Are Pushing Asian Americans Out Of The Democratic Party

Leftists Are Pushing Asian Americans Out Of The Democratic Party

Excerpt: Asian Americans are beginning to realize that their values are no longer aligned with the shifting Democratic Party. A recent spike in Asian hate crimes has led to leftist and corporate media that deliberately refuse to talk about the perpetrators and their motives. They insinuate the hate crimes are due to either structural imbalances in society or a direct result of white supremacy rhetoric. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez bizarrely blamed the rise in attacks on Asians on former President Trump. The New York Times also attributed it to Trump’s alleged xenophobia with the term “Chinese virus.” NBC News even went further, pondering whether violence against Asians should really be considered a hate crime, given that Asians are privileged and it might hamper the fight against “systemic racism.” Outlets refuse to acknowledge who the crimes (including murder, gang rape, and assault) are committed by or fear of a backlash from activist groups. As with most attacks on Jews in New York city, most of the perpetrators are black.

How Chicago Economics is Helping End a Pandemic:

How Chicago Economics is Helping End a Pandemic: Interview with Murphy, Philipson, Topel

Excerpt: Covid-19 has disrupted much of human life, but Operation Warp Speed has drastically mitigated the costs of the virus. The $10 billion federal program launched in April 2020 encouraged and accelerated the development and mass manufacturing of COVID-19 vaccines, streamlined Federal approval for vaccines and their manufacture, and provided Federal funds for private vaccine research and advance-purchase orders. COVID-19 vaccines are currently being administered to the general public at least six months earlier than expected. Vaccinating the population against COVID-19 six months earlier was worth about $1.8 trillion to the U.S. alone in terms of lives saved and accelerating the return to normal schooling, work, socializing, etc. (Mulligan and Philipson 2020).

Ariz. PD no longer responding to some calls due to staffing shortage. Officers will no longer respond to runaways, medical welfare checks and some traffic incidents, among others

Take a look at this article and specifically, all the things the police will NOT DO anymore because of short staffing. In essence, it says unless it's a major violent crime or accident, we won't be coming. That leaves everyone on their own for assorted kinds of difficulties, some of which are likely to spiral into real problems, including violence. This does not sound like a good thing for the citizens. --Del

Will the WHO Actually Ever Discover the Virus’s Origin?
Excerpt: Imagine you’re the Chinese government, and you’ve secretly been doing all kinds of research on viruses that are arguably dual-use — meaning what is learned in the research could be used for noble and benevolent purposes, or weaponized for malevolent purposes — including gain-of-function research, which can “enhance the pathogenicity or transmissibility of potential pandemic pathogens.” (In fact, we know that in past experiments, the Wuhan Institute of Virology “generated and characterized a chimeric virus expressing the spike of bat coronavirus SHC014 in a mouse adapted SARS-CoV backbone.”)

Excerpt: About a month ago, news consumers were belatedly informed that New York governor Andrew Cuomo was not a pandemic hero, the Lincoln Project was not filled with noble Republican idealists who were effectively persuading conservatives to stop supporting Donald Trump, and progressive policies were not helping the least fortunate in California. This week, the media belatedly recognize that the evidence for soaring hate crimes against Asian Americans is much less reliable than initially reported, that the survey data reveal that liberal perceptions of police shootings are wildly at odds with the verifiable facts, and that recent headlines exaggerated the conclusions of a CDC report on government mask mandates.

A Chinese Court Ruling Tests American Wokeness

A Chinese Court Ruling Tests American Wokeness

Excerpt: A Chinese court has upheld a ruling that a textbook description of homosexuality as “a psychological disorder” was not a factual error but merely an “academic view”. ... Your move, Disney. And you too, National Basketball Association. Nike. Apple. All kinds of big American and multinational corporations take pride in their equal treatment of gay and lesbian employees. They would never accept a subsidiary, partner, or perhaps even customers who contended that homosexuality was a “common psychosexual disorder” or who labeled gay and lesbian relationships as a “perversion of the sex partner.” They would never meekly acquiesce if the American legal system determined that homosexual relationships were a potential problem of mental health. Surely, these companies and celebrities and political leaders will speak up about this ruling from the Chinese judiciary system, right? Surely, the equal treatment and acceptance of gays and lesbians is not a value that these companies and leaders are willing to negotiate or compromise upon, just to maintain access to a foreign export market, right? Surely, the Biden administration will be registering its displeasure with this ruling in a public manner, right? ... Even Republicans who aren’t always outspoken or consistent supporters of gay rights find state-sponsored abuse of gays and lesbians abhorrent; back in 2019, the Trump administration launched a global campaign to end the criminalization of homosexuality in dozens of nations where it’s still illegal to be gay.

Book

The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers: Economic Change and Military Conflict from 1500 to 2000 by Paul Kennedy

https://www.amazon.com/Rise-Fall-Great-Powers/dp/0679720197/ref=sr_1_1?crid=28VDALX8GCY47&dchild=1&keywords=the+rise+and+fall+of+the+great+powers+paul+kennedy&qid=1614749527&s=books&sprefix=The+rise+and+fall+of+the+great+powers%2Caps%2C181&sr=1-1

For those who think that America will always be number one, this book should be enlightening. Citizens of the British, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian empires doubtless though the same, as did citizens of Ming China and Imperial France. The lesson of this excellent book is that power erodes, that no state can have enough financial, economic, and military power to ever be secure. Much of the subject would be dry but for the author’s excellent writing and research that pulled up key quotes. (My favorite is; “A mass media…whose raison d’etre is to make money and secure audiences and only secondarily to inform.” ) As an overview of history from 1500 to 1989, when it was published, it can’t be topped. Professor Kennedy foresees the rise of China as a world power, but not the collapse of the Soviet empire or the reunification of Germany. I took the liberty of emailing him to ask if he had published anything updating these areas. He has just submitted a 685page Ms. Victory at Sea; 1936-1946. He also said that by the second half of this year he would turn in a new edition of Great Powers. I plan to read both, “If I’m spared,” as the Scots say.

A New Crime Wave—and What to Do About It

This is an excellent article, MacDonald is great with actual history, facts, statistics.  But I don't  hold out much hope for a huge return to good times in the Big Apple.  Too many businesses have moved out already, too many have found that many of their workers can work from home just fine, too many high paid and wealthy people have fled to southern Connecticut and other places.  The taxes are still super high, and a lot of the glamor has just lost some of its shine.  Higher crime rates and obvious idiot idealogues in charge will discourage people from coming back and keep encouraging others to leave.  And who in his right mind will sign up for the Police Academy when everyone knows the job has really become awful?

I think things will continue to slide downhill, to how far I don't know.  Sure am glad I don't live there, or in San Francisco or Portland, etc.  Too bad for the decent people who find themselves stuck in such places.

A New Crime Wave—and What to Do About It

New York City rejected the policing lessons that led to its success, and violence is surging.

Heather Mac Donald    February 28, 2021

For two decades, many New Yorkers had assured themselves that a return to the crime and squalor of the early 1990s was unlikely. Former mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who presided over a 62 percent drop in major felonies from 1994 through 2001, proved that violence was not an urban inevitability. His successor, Michael Bloomberg, drove crime down further, through the 2008 recession and beyond. Both mayors set a benchmark for what was possible, preemptively discrediting any future mayor’s excuse that crime was beyond his capacity to overcome.

Woke-O-Haram Cancels Dr. Seuss

 Woke-O-Haram Cancels Dr. Seuss

Excerpt: Here is Barack Obama just four short years ago: All of the stuff you need to know is in Dr. Suess. It's like the Star-Belly Sneetches, you know? We're all the same, so why would we treat somebody differently just because they don't have a star on their belly? If I think about responsibility, I think about Horton sitting on the egg up in the tree, while Lazy Mayzie's flying off doing whatever she wants. Do you know what I mean? All I'm saying is that as you get older, what you will find is that the homespun, basic virtues that your mom, or your dad, or folks you care about or admire, taught you about hard work, being responsible, being kind, giving something back, being useful, working as a team, turns out it's all true.
