Random Thoughts for March 2021

Random Thoughts for March 2021

Robert A. Hall

Feel free to post or forward.

Health update: I’m at least 99% recovered from my left lung removal in June. Had the second Moderna COVID shot 2/4, so should be 95% protected. Still have to wear a mask at the VA, other healthcare settings, on planes (not that I fly) and in crowds due to other risks of being immune suppressed from my right lung transplant in 2013. My balance is bad due to age, so I’m a fall risk.

Big problem right now is the severe osteo arthritis in my right hip. Increasing pain and limited mobility. Had a cortisone shot six weeks ago, which helps a lot but is wearing off. Can only have them every three months.

Talked to an orthopedic surgeon at the VA about doing a hip replacement. He has successful done two hip replacements and a shoulder replacement on a lung transplant patient, so he is willing. He has to get sign off from my dentist (?), PCP and my transplant team, so waiting to hear. The odds break down like this. About 1% to 2% of joint replacements get infected, which could be fatal. But this gives me a 98% chance of coming through okay. Without it, I have a 100% change of being in ever increasing pain and ever reducing mobility for the rest of my life. Plus I may become bedridden, which has a lot of infection risk. Seems like a no-brainer.

I repeat, I don't do messenger or text. Don't bother.

Steven Spender, 1937, quoting a journalist in And I remember Spain: “The more they speak of unity, the more they seem to quarrel.”

When politicians say, “You have to sacrifice for the common good,” it usually turns out the good they seek is for them and their supporters, not you.

There is an old and famous quote about prostitution being the oldest profession, and that politics is the second oldest profession. The quote also notes that there seems to be little difference between the two. I am beginning to think that prostitution is the more honorable of the two. --Todd R.

I read that 93% of black murder victims were killed by blacks. What kind of diversity is that? We need to encourage black gangbangers to kill more whites, Asian, and Hispanics.

You can lead a horse to water, but if he doesn't drink, a kick in the gonads rarely improves the situation.

Democrats want everything free except speech they disagree with.

Truth is often ugly and the lies are pretty, but they turn out uglier in the end.

It has come to this. Choosing a pillow is a political act.

I can’t be guilt tripped into sharing a meme. And I still don’t do messenger.

I graduated from college in 1972 debt-free. I wonder if it’s too late to apply for a $50,000 student loan and have you pay it off?

It’s okay to call for riots and political violence as long as the left is the violent rioters.

They would have gotten more viewers if Judge Judy presided over the impeachment.

The long summer of left-wing BLM/Antifa riots, violence and looting that killed 25 people, damaged 1500 businesses, and destroyed sections of over 100 cities (including Madison, Wisconsin where I live) was followed by right wing violence and riots at the Capitol on January 6 where five died and did a lot of damage. The lesson is that violence is more contagious than COVID.

At least 25 Americans were killed during protests and political unrest in 2020

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/oct/31/americans-killed-protests-political-unrest-acled

Mostly killed by left-wing types, so these deaths don't matter.

Every time Woke Left-Wing Culture cancels someone, hundreds of new conservatives get a clue.

The party that says love trumps hate, and where hate has no home, celebrated Rush Limbaugh’s death.

Unlike Kamala Harris, my ancestors never owned any slaves. How come she is not responsible for that and I am?

You don’t believe in Climate Change? Hell, there used to be glaciers all over Wisconsin.

The Japanese-American Internment in WWII was done by an executive order by a beloved Democrat president.

For several centuries, western wars were mainly religious, Catholic vs. Protestant, some internal. Then they shifted to be Christians against non-Christians: Muslims, Nazis, Socialists, Communists, Progressives. And they are still often internal.

Democrats are the party of grave-dancers.

Liberals: Race and gender are social constructs, but white people are racists who discriminate against women.

If you try to be the Voice of Reason, the crazies in your party, left or right, will excoriate you.

I deplore the “cancel culture” of the left. But the right has its own cancel culture that has tried to cancel George Bush, Mitt Romney, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and many other (RINO) GOP politicians that don’t toe the Trump line. And the far right danced on John McCain’s grave just as the far left has danced on Rush Limbaugh’s.

Coke telling employees to act “less white” is racism. Imaging telling them to act less black.

If you support the police, put a blue bulb in your outside light. If not, put a red bulb in.

I get a lot of one-questions surveys by phone or e-mail. Stuff like, “Should all kittens be killed.” They always follow with an appeal for money.

“Calling it progressive to send children of color the message that achievement is White is an irony lost on the woke.” — William McGurn, Wall Street Journal.

The Canadian House of Commons unanimously passed a non-binding motion to declare China's treatment of the Uighur minority group a "genocide." Biden downplays Uighur persecution as part of China's 'different norms' (huh. Liberal Canada.)

To ignore the facts does not change the facts. –Andy Rooney

From the Net: White is the new Black.

If you are talking to young socialists, ask them if they know what “Katyn” was.

If you want to force people to live in privation, there is no better method than a planned economy.

“The beginning of wisdom, in human or international affairs, is knowing when to stop.” –Henry Kissinger

free speech

Prof. Turley is not a Conservative, wrote numerous criticisms of Trump, but is what I call a classic Liberal, committed to the ideals of Liberalism as it was back in JFK's day.  Like him, I am a Free Speech purist, believing that while there are terrible abuses of Free Speech all the time, they are less dangerous to the republic than the institution of censorship by whoever has more power or can make more noise.  It's not hard to note the myriad examples in history where dictators always impose censorship, and in fact the various nations where that goes on right now.

Rebels: The Irish Rising of 1916 by Peter De Rosa

Rebels: The Irish Rising of 1916 by Peter De Rosa

https://smile.amazon.com/Rebels-Peter-Rosa/dp/059301751X/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=rebels+the+irish+rising+of+1916.+peter+de+rosa&qid=1613957887&s=books&sr=1-2

You hear the word “insurrection” tossed around a lot today. THIS was an insurrection. British artillery destroyed much of central Dublin. I have read a lot of Irish history and took two master’s level courses in it when I was getting my MEd in history. This is bar-none the best account of the Easter Rising I have read. The author is an excellent writer and has drawn in all aspects, not only what was happening in Ireland, but in Britain, Germany, and America. It brings home the immense tragedy of this event. The rebel leaders knew that they would die, but thought their deaths would shift the Irish people against English rule. Amazingly, they did. The 1916 rising was followed by the Irish-British war of 1919-1921, then the Irish Civil War of 1921-23 as the Rebels fought each other over the Free State. The modern Irish Republic and the troubles in the north can be traced to 1916. I highly recommend this book.

I interviewed a Marine vet for the VA’s My Life, My Story project who serve under Fox in the Sixth Marines. He recommended this well-written excellent autobiography. Fox served as an enlisted combat Marine in Korea and as an officer in Vietnam, where he earned the Medal of Honor. In war or Peace, Wes Fox was a Marine’s Marine. The book is not only a memoir, but a collection of leadership lessons that the motivated individual can apply throughout life. I Highly recommend it.

It’s time to get real about freedom of speech

This gentleman really lays it all out, with many of the ugliest examples of what's been going on.  We don't have a "speech Gestapo" here in the US (so far, although they've been working at it on the social media giants), and it's really shocking to hear how far things have gone in the UK.  I really would not have thought it possible.  I wonder how long it can go on before there's some kind of revolt.

Reminds me of the old cartoon where the minister runs up to the king and says "Your Majesty, the people are revolting!", to which the king replies "They certainly are."  But here in the former colonies maybe we still have a lot of those revolting people left.....

Graphs Show Florida's Better COVID Outcomes With Mild Lockdown

Really interesting data on Florida's handling of the virus compared to other states. Makes their governor look really good, despite the media and other politicians trying to claim he was doing a terrible job and gettng people killed. Now it turns out that a different governor who was praised for is handling of the situation is the one who got a lot more people killed, and had a long running coverup of that situation. --Del

A nice, impartial guy to run the investigation for Pelosi

A nice, impartial guy to run the investigation for Pelosi

She has picked this retired Army general to lead the investigation. He has a long history of strong criticism and nasty comments about Trump. He doesn't like Republicans much either, see his tweet below from a month ago about congressmen Hawley and Cruz. On top of the nasty words about them he starts with, notice he ends on a note of racial attack. Yeah, that's what we need more of, racism accusations with no real basis. Apparently if you went to an upper tier Law School and don't belong to a racial minority you must be there only due to your skin. Sure, this is exactly the kind of man needed to run an objective, completely nonbiased investigation into something involving Trump and anyone supposedly connected to him in any way. --Del

The Decline of Intelligence in the West
BY DAVID SOLWAY FEB 10, 202
Recent studies have reported a worrisome decline in IQ scores in Western nations over the last decades, a reversal of the once-hopeful Flynn Effect (named after the late philosopher and psychologist James R. Flynn) which posited a growth in cognitive abilities for much of the 20th Century. Now the Flynn Effect seems to have reversed, leading to predictions of a general dumbing down of selective populations. Other studies report that IQ erosion is not confined to this century but that IQ has dropped by an average of 14.1 percent over the last century. As Evan Horowitz writes for NBC News, “A range of studies using a variety of well-established IQ tests and metrics have found declining scores across Scandinavia, Britain, Germany, France and Australia.”

I blame the decline in educational standards. ~Bob

Book Recommendation

Countdown 1945: The Extraordinary Story of the Atomic Bomb and the 116 Days That Changed the World by Chris Wallace

https://www.amazon.com/Countdown-1945-Extraordinary-Story-Changed/dp/1982143347/ref=sr_1_2?crid=27TADYJ04EXQ0&dchild=1&keywords=countdown+1945+chris+wallace&qid=1612155114&s=books&sprefix=Countdown+1945%2Caps%2C190&sr=1-2

I received this terrific book for Christmas. My wife’s adoptive father (her grandfather) worked on the bomb at Oakridge, TN during the war, so she loved the book too. This well written book takes you from the day Truman became president to the aftermath of dropping the bomb on Japan. It is well-written and well-researched; I learned a great deal I didn’t know. I highly recommend it.

America’s Political Prisoners First

Charging people who never went in the building and denying them bail for the ridiculously minor infraction of being near it?  This persecution, not prosecution.  This incredible action by judges in holding people with no criminal records without bail for the minor stuff is beyond anything I would have thought possible in this country.  I was worried before, but now that's the good old days!  The way that cops and courts under Hitler went after Jews and anyone else they didn't like is becoming a model for today, here.  How many people know that Dachau was opened in 1933, and the first years of its operation were not about Jews but anyone who was in opposition to Hitler?

I can see now that the danger of really terrible events coming at us in the years to come is very high.

Israel's rapid rollout provides the first real-world proof that COVID vaccination works as well as promised

Israel's rapid rollout provides the first real-world proof that COVID vaccination works as well as promised

Excerpt: When it comes to vaccinating people against COVID-19 as quickly as possible, Israel is the undisputed world champion so far. In per capita terms, the country has administered more than 55 doses of either the Pfizer or the Moderna vaccine for every 100 residents. A full third of its population has already received at least the first of the two required doses. (...) Now that such a huge share of Israelis have been vaccinated, experts are looking at the country’s experience as a kind of real-world, real-time experiment, with far more participants than any clinical trial and unique data that could start to answer some of our most pressing questions about the power of vaccines to curb the pandemic. Here are four key takeaways from Israel’s latest numbers: The vaccines look like they’re as effective as promised — even against the U.K. variant. [As might be expected from Yahoo or any other relatively liberal media, they aren’t really pleased to give Israel credit for much of anything, but grudgingly admit–after trashing Israeli policies--Israel has done a wonderful job and the vaccine works. It also details how few the serious side effects of the vaccine have been. This is REALLY GOOD NEWS by almost any rational measurement. It might be the best news you’ll read today, so enjoy the article. Ron P. Had my second shot today. ~Bob]

We Should Worry about a Permanent Covidocracy

We Should Worry about a Permanent Covidocracy

Excerpt: Beginning in 1940, German U-boats wreaked havoc on vital British imports. But by 1943 with the convoy system and air support from both sides of the ocean leaving only a gap in the very middle, the back of U-boat interdiction was broken. So that’s when rationing was eliminated or cut back right? Or at least after the war ended, right? Wrong. Newton struck again. The Ministry of Food had determined it could better distribute food than the free market, that it could be more “fair.” Yet of course the rich were able to buy anything available on the black market so rationing was inherently unfair. The Ministry kept adding more foods and other commodities to the list including paper and clothing. Socialist George Orwell complained it was hard to get a book printed. When the Labour Party took over in 1945 it was only too eager to micromanage consumption and bread was rationed only after the war, in July 1946. “It was not until the early 1950s that most commodities came ‘off the ration.’ Meat was the last item to be de-rationed and food rationing ended completely in 1954,” according to the Imperial War Museums Website. So “wartime rationing” was essentially one-third during war, two-thirds in peacetime. And while the Tories finally ended peacetime rationing, even they waited a few years to do so. Again, the public had to make it clear that enough was enough. Or perhaps the other way around, they weren’t getting enough. Meanwhile rationing in West Germany ended in 1950.
[The author, writing from Cebu, Philippine Islands, paints a not-very-pretty picture of our possible future and makes a really good point: we should establish a firm set of conditions and/or date when the “COVID-19 restrictions” go away. Otherwise, our grandchildren may still be wearing masks and staying six feet apart from each other as adults, 30 years from now. Ron P.]

Did CNN Accidentally Prove That Trump Did NOT Call for Violence at the Capitol?

Excerpt: But according to a new report from CNN, “Evidence uncovered so far, including weapons and tactics seen on surveillance video, suggests a level of planning that has led investigators to believe the attack on the US Capitol was not just a protest that spiraled out of control, a federal law enforcement official says.” This completely undermines the entire case Democrats made for impeaching Trump. CNN’s story also seems to support other reports that that the FBI had warned Capitol Police a day before the assault that there was evidence that an attack on the Capitol was expected and being planned on social media platforms, including Twitter.
