Though this book was published in 1986, and thus missed the research that changed the names of some the flag raisers, it is the best history of the battle I have read. It doesn’t neglect the errors men made, but gives the courage of individual Marines, including those who earned the Medal of Honor, in great detail. It is well balanced and well researched. One stands in awe of the incredible sacrifices of Marines and sailors in the battle. It also doesn’t neglect the deaths of about 22,000 Japanese soldiers who died bravely for their cause. Many are still entombed in the sealed cave of Iwo. I highly recommend it.

Random Thoughts for March, 2023

Robert A. Hall

Feel free to post or forward.

Health Update: Have had yet another bad chest cold; makes breathing hard. Other than that, I seem to be trucking along.

Good riddance to February.

So I’m sitting in the VA waiting for an eye appointment (it was all good) and this old (my age) Marine Viet vet sits beside me. He has a great cane with a gold handle. We’re talking about Vietnam (he was wounded three times spent 2.5 years in a naval hospital) when a hearing tech comes out and say something to him about guys down the hall. “I’m not worried, “ he says, “I’ve got a sword in this cane.” The tech says, “You shouldn’t have that in the VA.” After he leaves I said, “You shouldn’t tell someone at the VA you have a sword.” I come out from my appointment and see two VA cops going into an exam room. One comes out with the cane.

How come Biden could have lawyers present when the FBI searched his place, but Trump couldn’t?

“If you’re not confused, you’re not paying attention.” ~ Tom Peters

The death of a black man beaten by five black cops reflects how hard it is to hire good cops after two years of trashing the police. To the left, of course, it’s another example of white supremacism.

"One (1) of the saddest lessons of history is this; if we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth.  The bamboozle has captured us. It's simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we've been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back."  ~ Dr. Carl E. Sagan

Most people have a junk drawer. Our house looks like a junk drawer. We’re not hoarders—but we can see it from here.

“Cryptocurrency is not a currency, not a commodity, and not a security. Instead it’s a gambling contract with a nearly 100% edge for the house.” ~ Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett’s longtime Number 2.

“I am convinced that ‘Latinx’ was invented by someone who, yes, is a Democrat hack, but who really only did it because they play a lot of Scrabble and X is 8 points. I’m guessing the next one they do will be ‘tranz’ because the Z is worth 10 points. The woke explanation will be that trans issues are ignored and dealt with last and Z is the last letter in the alphabet so it is spelled ‘tranz’ to remind everyone of how they are treated as an afterthought………or something.” ~ Kevin Durant

China is economically competitive with the US because they have no concern about the environment or human rights.

“Like many of the religious cults it resembles, climate fundamentalism is characterized by a perpetual quest for purity.” ~ Andrew Stuttaford.

Restaurants say “collops of beef” because “chunks of cow” wouldn’t sell. Likewise, progressives say “we provide gender-affirming care” because “we mutilate children” would hit too close to home.

Now that illegal immigrants can become cops in California, will they immediately arrest themselves for breaking immigration laws?

“The president taking (the Chinese spy balloon) down over the Atlantic is sort of like tackling the quarterback after the game is over,” ~ Rep. Mike Turner, chair of the House Intelligence Committee.

Sen. Fetterman was hospitalized for being lightheaded. How could he tell?

“It takes a lot more energy to refute bullshit than to produce it. Hence, the world is full of unrefuted bullshit.” ~ the Brandolini Effect

Any day I expect PETA to come out against antibiotics because germs are animals and have as much right to life as other animals.

A good novelist makes you believe the characters are real people.

Try not to bend the facts to fit your ideology.

The left doesn’t want gun control. They want victim disarmament.

“I found it kinda funny that now we spend more time teaching kids that they can’t read because they’re oppressed, than just teaching them to read.” ~ George

Women’s first right: to be born.

“The problem isn’t that Johnny can’t read. The problem isn’t even that Johnny can’t think. The problem is that Johnny doesn’t know what thinking is; he confuses it with feelings.” ~ Thomas Sowell

Nothing is as futile as “If.”

In Canada there is an activist group opposing euthanasia called Toujours Vivant (Not Dead Yet). Naturally, liberal media and politicians are savaging it.

Note from a dental technician who bought two of my quote books: “My dad and whole family will greatly enjoy these as they resonate with everything we value & hold dear. What a gift you have & what a sacrifice of time.” ~ Emily

Email from a guy in NC: “I  bought four copies of your Quotes. I gave three to friends and one is on my desk.  GREAT WORK !” – Kirk. He followed up that he bought a two more books for other friends! He also wrote a very positive review on Amazon.

Diné: A History of the Navajos by Peter Iverson (Author), Monty Roessel (Photographer)

https://smile.amazon.com/Din%C3%A9-History-Navajos-Peter-Iverson/dp/082632715X/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Dine%3A+a+history+of+the+Navajo&qid=1675464215&sr=8-1

My wife and I became hooked on listening to the wonderful Tony and Anne Hillerman Navajo mysteries on CD in the car. That led us to wanting to know more about the Navajo Nation. As a Marines, I already knew and honored the Navajo Code Talkers who served in the USMC in WWII. This book is a comprehensive and sympatric history of the people, from which I learned a great deal. It made me want to visit the Four Corners area, though given my age, health, and finances, that’s probably not on offer. Bot the historical photos and Roessel’s amazing color pictures of the reservation are an added bonus. I highly recommend this book.

Health Update: Bonnie and I, and her son Dale who is living with us, all had bad chest colds over New Years, but seem to be fine now. All else is okay.

Looking at what inflation and the collapse of the stock mark has done to our retirement fund in the last two years, Bonnie has returned to work. She is working full time as a temp in the HR office of the Madison School District. The job lasts until April 28, then who know? She loved the first two days.

We should demand to see the tax returns of Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, and Chuck Schumer. Hunter’s would be nice too.

The woke seem to be competing to create the most ridiculous woke idea of the year. It’s already January, and already the faithful are asked to believe. So far in January:

--Saying football field or baseball field is racist because it reminds blacks their ancestors were slaves in cotton fields. (The poor farmers who can’t say field.)

--Farting loudly is a sign of male dominance. (Or the sign of eating the wrong things or a medical condition.)

--Wearing black socks is racist appropriation of black skin color. (Nothing about blacks wearing white socks.)

--Trans men should put frozen tomato paste inside themselves to simulate periods. (By their spotting ye shall know them.)

--White Men's Sexual Interest in Big Butts Is Now Racist. (I’m a leg man myself, but do love a cute face and freckles.)

God knows what it will be in a year

My SAMS credit Card changed the payment date from the 18th to the 11th, then charged me a $40 late fee. Previously the Costco card did the same. (Got the SAMS card to take off the late fees.)

In 20 years the Navy will be taking disabled people in wheelchairs for the submarine service.

“My favorite thing about the Good Old Days was I wasn’t good and I wasn’t old.” ~ MeWe.com

Why bother having a national debt limit. You know they will just raise it every year.

“Black supremacy is as dangerous as white supremacy, and God is not interested merely in the freedom of black men and brown men and yellow men. God is interested in the freedom of the whole human race and the creation of a society where all men will live together as brothers, and all men will respect the dignity and the worth of all human personality.” ~ Martin Luther King

Make your bed every morning. That small commitment to neatness and order will set the tone for a successful day.

“Anyone can commit a murder, but it takes an artist to stage a suicide.” ~ KGB saying.

The American Experiment produced freedom and a high standard of living for millions. In the past 25 years it has been, inch by inch, slipping away. I fear our grandchildren will be slaves to the state like people in communist Russia or Nazi Germany.

“The minimum wage is just a prohibition against hiring low skilled labor.” ~ Mario Loyola

Recruiting is difficult because of the Woke military. How about recruiting a couple of regiments of Gurkhas, like the Brits. Or recruiting among the illegals. Serve four years honorably and receive citizenship. Fail to serve out you contract, and get deported immediately.

“Fanaticism consists of redoubling your efforts when you have forgotten your aim.” ~ George Santayana

Everyone has issues.

Rome is still an original example of how a republic slips into autocracy.

The Navajo and other southwest Indians were enslaved by the Spanish. And sometimes the white usage of them was pretty near slavery. Do Indians get Reparations as well?
