Old Jarhead's Political SitRep for October 23, 2012

Old Jarhead's Political SitRep for October 23, 2012
Robert A. Hall
Your one-stop-shop for political news and opinion. Please forward to friends who need to be informed. This SitRep (Military for “Situation Report”) is created by many readers who send me items for inclusion, which I would have likely missed or skipped. And I can only spend at most three hours a night pulling stuff, plus the healthcare or economic stuff that crosses my desk at work. As always, I—and you—owe them thanks and appreciation. I post articles because I think they are of interest and will stimulate thought and discussion. Doing so doesn’t mean that I necessarily agree (or disagree) with every—or any—opinion in the posted article, or that I was able to verify the information presented, which is the responsibility of the author. I try not to post things that are false, or too far a stretch, regardless of the view point, but I don’t always succeed. As always on the Net, or in the legacy media, you must read critically and with skepticism.

Monday’s Debate
I will post this before the debate starts, carry news and commentary on it the next day. I believe that the future of western civilization, and the American Experiment in political freedom, economic freedom, property rights and limited government may rest on the outcome. Not to put any pressure on Mitt. As I’ve said before, if Romney wins, America will be in a desperate uphill battle for survival. If Obama wins, it will be hopeless. I’ll of course go on fighting. First, because I might be wrong about the situation. Second because a game changer might come along. Third, because when the situation is hopeless, some folks run and hide. Marines die in place.

Three things Obama won’t repeat tonight
“Al Qaeda is on the run,” “The Benghazi Attack was the result of a spontaneous demonstration over a YouTube video,” and “After the election, I can be more flexible with Putin and Russia.”

Worth Reading: Voter Fraud and the Most Important Election in History
Excerpt: The choice is between America’s irrevocable ruin under Obama or the road to recovery under Romney. This election also may be one of the closest, a possibility that brings the issue of voter fraud to the forefront.

Barack Hussein Obama: Corruption endemic in the White House!
Excerpt: I would bet my next pension and my next Social Security payment, that every "green energy" deal supported by the most corrupt presidential administration in history, that of Barack Hussein Obama, has a piece of the action for each of these loans detailed below as what amounts to political kickbacks! It's called "PAY FOR PLAY" and it works like this:

And your excuse is? ~Bob.

Excerpt: Have you noticed that The New York Times editorial page is becoming increasingly strident, increasingly emotional and increasingly irrational? Here is Paul Krugman in last Monday’s column: Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan…want to expose many Americans to financial insecurity, and let some of them die, so that a handful of already wealthy people can have a higher after-tax income. No, that’s not a misprint. The Republicans actually want to let some people die so that they can reward their rich friends. It’s not an isolated comment either. Under the heading “Death by Ideology,” Krugman actually lists all of the ways in which a President Romney would proceed to kill people. (I’ve noticed. I’m hoping it’s a sign of panic. ~Bob.)

Government Cronyism and the Erosion of the Public's Trust
Excerpt: Public trust in the government has eroded in recent decades due to the perceived preference the government gives to favored groups. Government cronyism often happens in the form of preferential tax treatment, preferential regulation, influence on policy, and subsidies, says John Garen, the Gatton Endowed Professor of Economics at the University of Kentucky. Since the 1960s, popular opinion and trust in the government has been on a downward trend. Trust in government peaked in 1966 at 76.6 percent. By 1976 it had fallen to 35.6 percent. In the early 2000s, trust in the government had risen to 48.3 percent. But in 2010, it was at its low of 21.5 percent.

In Medicare Part D Plans, Low Or Zero Copays And Other Features To Encourage The Use Of Generic Statins Work, Could Save Billions
Excerpt: The private health plans that administer the Medicare drug benefit use various tools to encourage the use of generic drugs in order to lower total drug spending. Higher generic drug use also appears to encourage consumers to continue taking their medications. This study examines how different drug plan benefit and formulary designs influence the selection of generic drugs to treat high cholesterol among Medicare beneficiaries. We found that a low copayment for generic statins is the strongest factor influencing the use of these drugs, and eliminating the copay altogether has an especially large effect. Other tools that have an effect are higher copays and prior authorization or “step therapy” requirements for popular brand-name statins. (Unfortunately, the Democrats sold out to Big Pharma for their support for Obamacare. ~Bob.)

Excerpt: The hardest-hit sectors of the U.S. economy from a carbon tax would be energy-intensive industries, particularly chemicals, car manufacturing, iron and steel, aluminum, cement, and mining and oil refining. These large industries would be at a serious disadvantage in the world marketplace, and many companies would move production to countries without such a tax. The cost in dollars, as well as in lost jobs, from a carbon tax would be staggering.

The EPA Is Moving The Goalposts, Even After The Game Has Started
Excerpt: EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson claimed the agency has taken “measured and careful” steps and that the new costs would not be a burden to the various industries. However, for Jackson, a measured step is when she only gets to move the goalpost half as far as she wanted to. Several affected companies disagreed and sued the EPA.

Parched in the West but Shipping Water to China, Bale by Bale
Excerpt: Chinese demand has prompted alfalfa prices to double in the past two years. Farmers and investors alike are rushing to convert lands to the crop, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture is promoting the development of this new export market. Ninety-nine percent of the exported alfalfa is grown in a handful of Western states, especially California. However, the most curious fallout of this market transaction involves water. Alfalfa is a water-guzzling crop, and the amount that was exported to China in 2012 is enough to supply the annual consumption of around 500,000 American families. Parts of America struggle with chronic water shortages.

Scary: Something in the air. By Doug Hagmann
Excerpt: I attended a gun show yesterday morning, just over a quarter-century after attending my first and only gun show. … Every person I spoke to told me they were there to buy a gun, another gun, and/or look for bargains for ammunition. With the exception of one man, every person I spoke with said they were there to look at or buy weapons and/or ammunition for self-defense.

Use the link to see a 14-minute video about what happened at Ft Hood. If that doesn't make you mad as hell, you are way too placid a person. Three years and they aren't ready for trial for an event totally public with dozens of witnesses? What in hell is holding them up? Rip this guy's beard out with pliers and get him ready for the goodbye injections. --Del

The Truth Behind the Benghazi Attack
Excerpt: In the White House, President Obama was meeting with National Security Adviser Thomas Donilon, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, and Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, to review the options, but the news they were getting from the fledgling government in Libya was crazily contradictory. The only thing for sure was that the Americans in the consulate were facing a concerted terrorist assault, and the local forces hadn’t been able to make a difference. A Libyan relief force of 40 made it to the consulate but were overwhelmed. (While it’s difficult to tell how much credibility to give this account, some facts stand out. First, Daily Beast is a solidly “progressive” news source. Second, they have no hesitation about saying—in print—that the President and his top military advisors were aware within MINUTES that the Benghazi attack was a terrorist op. Although solidly progressive, Daily Beast has frequently been at odds with the administration on many issues, especially those related to security. Daily Beast has also long been supportive of Hillary Clinton, and may be trying to keep her from becoming the scapegoat in this mess. So, I’m inclined to believe this is the best information they have at this time. So, if the President knew within minutes, but still told the world the fables he actually did tell for weeks, then.... Excerpt: Mitt Romney has now reached the 50% mark for the first time in Colorado and leads President Obama by four in the critical swing state.

Wisconsin Senate: Thompson (R) 48%, Baldwin (D) 46%
Excerpt: Former Governor Tommy Thompson and Democratic Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin are in a near tie in Wisconsin’s down-to-the-wire U.S. Senate race.

Too funny. ~Bob. Excerpt: Celebrated historian Bertram Oxley has uncovered a memorandum from former Japanese Emperor Hirohito to Admiral Yamamoto dated December 6, 1941, showing that the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was motivated by an offensive film made by Charlie Chaplin ridiculing Japanese cuisine.

Jordanians arrest 11 in terror plot
Excerpt; Jordanian officials uncovered plans for a major combined islamist terrorist attack that would have included a bombing at a shopping center in Amman and assassination attempts on Western diplomats, Jordanian state television reported Sunday. With weapons and explosives smuggled from Syria, an al Qaeda-linked terrorist cell aimed to destabilize the country by carrying out a series of assassinations and suicide bombings aimed at westerners and commercial areas. (Per article, in the works since June. –Barb)

Excerpt: We don’t even believe that a commission on presidential debates will ensure us unbiased moderators, or that the candidates will have equal time in speaking, or that the supposedly quiet crowd won’t boo or clap to affect the tempo of the exchange. From now on, will debate moderators bring preselected transcripts to the forum, wait for a key moment, interrupt one of the speakers, and then wave a piece of paper to proffer authority to contradict him — eliciting applause from the supposedly neutral and silent audience, and affirmation from the president?

Salafists destroy ancient Morocco carvings: NGO
Excerpt: Stone carvings in Morocco's High Atlas mountains dating back more than 8,000 years and depicting the sun as a pagan divinity have been destroyed by Salafists, a local rights group said on Wednesday. "These stone carvings of the sun are more than 8,000 years old. They were destroyed several days ago," Aboubakr Anghir, a member of the Amazigh (Berber) League for Human Rights, told AFP.

Excerpt: Oh Allah, absolve us of our sins, strengthen us, and grant us victory over the infidels. Oh Allah, destroy the Jews and their supporters. Oh Allah, disperse them, rend them asunder.

Pak man shot dead after being acquitted of blasphemy
Didn’t get the memo. ~Bob. Excerpt: A Pakistani man who was acquitted of a blasphemy charge has been shot dead by two men in Punjab province, police officials said on Saturday.

Libya Grand Mufti: Remove References to Democracy and Religious Freedom From School Textbooks
Excerpt: The Libya Herald reported on Thursday that the “Fatwa Office” has asked the Ministry of Education in Libya to remove passages related to democracy and freedom of religion from school textbooks. (Since I believe these rights come from God, this is blasphemy and they are mocking my religion. I think I’ll have a spontaneous riot. ~Bob.)

Romney's Binders And Dem's Deranged Distractions. By Mark Steyn
Excerpt: Ah, I thought, a timely protest. These activists understand that, with Obama’s flatline economy drifting inexorably to a $20 trillion federal debt, we’ll soon be living in cardboard shacks in shanty towns in the parking lot of the bankrupt Solyndra factory. Or it’s what they’ll be using for the X-ray plates at your local hospital once the Obamacare rationing kicks in.

Seeds of our dysfunction: Reduce the government's complicity in illusions. By George Will
Excerpt: Elections supposedly prevent convulsions, serving as safety valves that vent social pressures and enable course corrections. November’s election will either be a prelude to a convulsion or the beginning of a turn away from one. America’s public-policy dysfunction exists not because democracy isn’t working but because it is.

U.N. Criticizes U.S. Border Patrol For 'Excessive Force.' By Awr Hawkins
Excerpt: The U.N. claims the U.S. Border Patrol has gotten somewhat trigger happy on the U.S./Mexico border. They base this claim on a recent shooting in which a Mexican teenager was killed while part of a group of teens that was throwing rocks at U.S. Border Patrol agents in the dark of night. …This is the same DHS which has yet to open an honest investigation into the shooting death of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry (Dec. 2010), and which has voiced little concern over the hundreds of Mexican citizens killed with Fast and Furious weapons.

Poe on Fast and Furious, Libya scandals: We can’t trust Obama administration ‘on what it says about anything.’ By Matthew Boyle
Excerpt: Texas Republican Rep. Ted Poe told The Daily Caller he fears the American people and Congress cannot trust at face value anything President Barack Obama’s administration says. “The result of all this is we’re getting to the point where the credibility of the administration on what it says about anything is not credible,” Poe said in a phone interview about “Operation: Fast and Furious” and the newly surfacing scandal surrounding the terrorist attacks in Libya. “As we get into what they say, we often find that they are wrong and have misled the American people.”

United Nations organization set to monitor US polling places on Election Day. By Jessica Stanton
Excerpt: The United Nations-affiliated Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe will deploy election monitors around the United States on Election Day in an effort to monitor conservative groups for voter suppression or intimidation at polling places….The liberal U.S. organizations complained about voter ID laws and early voting restrictions, which they believe may negatively affect minorities, low-income Americans, the elderly and women. They specifically requested election monitors be sent to PennsylvaniaWisconsinFloridaOhio and Texas. (They are there to protect Obama and fraud. If he loses, they will find what they are looking for. ~Bob.)

So if you want a voter to only vote once, you're a voter suppressor?

Jewish-Arab Demography Defies Conventional “Wisdom.” Ambassador (ret.) Yoram Ettinger
Excerpt: In 2012, Israel's Jewish demography continues the robust surge of the last 17 years, while Muslim demography, west of the Jordan River and throughout the Middle East, increasingly embraces Western standards.

Obama Media Abandoning Obama
Excerpt: “The president and his supporters are attacking Romney because his long-term budget blueprint calls for money-saving reforms to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, three of the biggest drivers of deficit spending. Obama would be more credible in critiquing the proposal if he had a serious alternative for bringing entitlement spending under control. He doesn’t.”

Changing the Battlefield. By Shoshana Bryen
Excerpt: The unwillingness of the Obama administration to label the September occupation of American diplomatic facilities in Cairo and Benghazi, and the murder of an American diplomat "acts of war" make this an opportune moment to consider two lessons emanating from more than a decade of warfare in the Arab and Moslem world. The United States has ceased to use military force as an instrument with which to enforce its will. Our military has become an element of American diplomacy designed to change minds and behavior. (This important analysis states that the US is at war with a number of strains of non-state Islamic jihadist movements and that our policies and military strategies are poorly designed to meet, deter and defeat them. She argues that this is a result of a willful denial of the facts of history since at least from 1979 and an ideology mired in guilt and multiculturalism. Declaring victory in Iraq is nonsense, since it is now a satrapy of Iran and a superhighway for arms and men to Syria. The Taliban will overrun Afghanistan in 2015 if our policy stays the same; Pakistan will more and more become an army with an ancillary state and will return Afghanistan to warlordism. The Oministration is good at picking what for the US are new sets of adversaries in the lands of the Arab winter. And as is the lesson being shown to traditional friends and allies elsewhere in the world, by pressuring Israel to make concessions to Palestinian irredentist and jihadists, they do not trust the Oministration. Emboldened by the policy of speaking boldly and brandishing a twig, the Russians do what they please and are pleased to enable the mullahs for hard cash. At the same time, the Chinese feel free to fill the vacuum we have created in the western Pacific. Cordially, Larry Greenberg)

Excerpt: The cost to taxpayers for the failure of solar panel company Solyndra may be much higher than the $535 million dollar federal loan guarantee the company received.

Sharia lashing 'a punishment for alcohol', court hears

Executive Summary Brief : U.S. Embassy Massacre in Benghazi, Libya
http://www.scribd.com/doc/110758358/Executive-Summary-Brief-Benghazi
The document you can find at this link really goes into super detail of all the things that went on in Libya, and how crazy it was to not have an entire Marine squad there for security. All of which preceded the murders, and some people in high offices bear the blame for this tragedy. Until they are found and fired (at least) nothing that Hilary says about taking responsibility means a damn thing. –Del

Industry Radiation Experts Nail it: Greenhouse Gas Theory Debunked
Excerpt: Millions of hours of commercial tests have scorched the cornerstone of global warming science: the disputed greenhouse gas effect. Hidden in plain sight for years has sat irrefutable evidence from heating manufacturers to prove that infrared radiation does not heat the air. Is this a big deal? You bet.

The Mitt Romney You Don't Know (Yet). By Jeff Ballabon
Excerpt: Most of the chatter is about how unexpected this kind of positive coverage of the Republican candidate is from anywhere in “MSM”. Perhaps, but really besides the point. The content itself is what is truly extraordinary. It paints a picture of Mitt Romney that is utterly different than any heretofore on public display.

'Terror suspect trio plotted to massacre crowds using a car fitted with knives and detonating eight suicide bombs in attack bigger than July 7'
Didn’t get the “Islam is a Religion of Peace” memo. ~Bob. Excerpt: Three terror suspects planned to attach knives to a car then drive into a heavily crowded area as part of an terrorist plot that could have wreaked more devastation than the July 7 attacks, a court has heard. Irfan Naseer, 31, Irfan Khalid and Ashik Ali, both 27, are accused of masterminding a plot to detonate eight suicide bombs after one of the extremists claimed 7/7 attackers should have used nail bombs to inflict more damage.

RCP electoral college projection for states with AAA credit rating: 98-13 Romney. For states with A- credit rating: 75-0 Obama.

If I had a dollar for every campaign donation email I've deleted, I could afford to attend an Obama fundraiser dinner.

Excerpt: Let me be blunt: Paul Krugman, who some decades ago was a serious guy, has become unhinged. Believe it or not, he actually argued last weekend that “a literal description of [the Romney/Ryan health policy reform] plan is that they want to expose many Americans to financial insecurity, and let some of them die, so that a handful of already wealthy people can have a higher after-tax income.” Nowhere in this rant is there any recognition that government financing of “coverage” inexorably would require some of the rationing that he believes would yield deaths among the poor and elderly, about which those evil Republicans would applaud, apparently.

‘Dilbert’ Author Endorses Romney, Professional Left Freaks Out
Excerpt: Scott Adams, the creator of the popular comic strip “Dilbert,” endorsed Mitt Romney on his blog Wednesday. The reaction he received from liberal news sites was predictably outraged and, in Adams’ hands, hilarious.

The Republican Party isn’t racist. By Anthony Rek LeCounte
Excerpt: Good column by a black writer. ~Bob. Excerpt: Why is it that the left is so obsessed with the spectacle of Republican racism? Is it unease with a dark racial history, from the social tensions and racial violence in the North to the governmental Jim Crow activism of progressive Democrats in the Wilson administration? Is it the compulsion to rationalize the atrophic effects of welfare and other leftist policy on black families, or that minorities are more likely to have jobs, live in better-off neighborhoods and attend better-performing schools in the Sun Belt than in the Frost Belt?
First, Aid the Living. By Bing West
Excerpt: A U.S. ambassador is missing and his diplomatic team is desperately fighting off terrorist attacks. Our commander-in-chief and his national-security team in Washington are listening to the phone calls from the Americans under attack and watching real-time video from a drone circling overhead. Yet the U.S. military sends no aid. Why? (Both West and his son are Marine combat veterans. ~Bob.)

Daily Kos/SEIU Poll: Romney Beats Obama 50-46
Excerpt: The left-leaning Public Policy Polling does regular weekly polling for the extreme left-leaning Daily Kos and SEIU, and the numbers this morning have probably stopped the hearts of leftists everywhere. Nationally, the poll shows Romney up four, 50-46%. In the swing states, the news is just as bad with Romney up three, 50-47%. (Need to win by 2% to 5% to overcome fraud. Need Ohio. Don’t celebrate—work! ~Bob.)

Can anyone tell me what foreign policy experience Obama had before he became President that qualified him to be President? (Racist! Oh, wait, Pam is black… ~Bob.)

Gloria Allred’s ‘October Surprise’ Might Help Romney. By Gary DeMar
Excerpt: In my article “Will Gloria Allred Try to Destroy Mitt Romney with an ‘October Surprise’?,” I pointed out that Allred may be trying to pull an “October Surprise” to defame Mitt Romney and ruin his bid for the presidency.

The Real Reason Behind Benghazigate? By Frank Gaffney, Jr.
Excerpt: President Obama's once-seemingly-unstoppable march towards reelection hit what he might call "bumps in the road" in Benghazi, Libya late on September 11, 2012. It might be more accurate to describe the effect of the well-planned and -executed, military-style attack on a diplomatic facility there as the political equivalent of a devastating improvised explosive device on the myth of the unassailability of the Obama record as Commander-in-Chief.

In Cleveland, Cincinnati and Milwaukee, Billboards Saying "Voter Fraud is a Felony" are Racist. By Allan Wall
Excerpt: This is from the famous Ohio paper "The Plain Dealer": Clear Channel Outdoor will remove 30 billboards across the city that drew complaints of racism and intimidation with their message of "Voter fraud is a felony," the company said Saturday night. (This campaign for nothing more than a fair election, and the way it was successfully opposed by the Democrats (see link below) makes it crystal clear that voter fraud is the real candidate in the next election and it runs unopposed. That means: Fraud wins, America loses. --Don Hank)
