Old Jarhead's Political SitRep for October 10, 2012

Old Jarhead's Political SitRep for October 10, 2012
Robert A. Hall

October 10th is National Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work Day.

October 10 is also the anniversary of the Battle of Tours (also called the Battle of Poitiers) in 732 AD, when Charles Martel (686-741), forever known as The Hammer, and his 30,000 Christian soldiers crushed an invading horde of 200,000 Moslem Jihadis in what is now central France. As Gibbon noted, had the Moslems won that day, all of Europe would have been Islamized and Western Civilization would have been extinguished. –Jack Wheeler. (Tours followed 21 years of Muslim conquests of Europe, starting with the invasion of Spain in 711 AD. Muslims, who attacked Christian lands repeatedly, including Spain, Egypt and what is now Turkey, complain endlessly about the response—the Crusades. Martel is supposedly a distant ancestor of mine. I hope he approves of my efforts. ~Bob)

Some hot items today. ~Bob

Your one-stop-shop for political news and opinion. Please forward to friends who need to be informed. This SitRep (Military for “Situation Report”) is created by many readers who send me items for inclusion, which I would have likely missed or skipped. And I can only spend at most three hours a night pulling stuff, plus the healthcare or economic stuff that crosses my desk at work. As always, I—and you—owe them thanks and appreciation. I post articles because I think they are of interest and will stimulate thought and discussion. Doing so doesn’t mean that I necessarily agree (or disagree) with every—or any—opinion in the posted article, or that I was able to verify the information presented, which is the responsibility of the author. I try not to post things that are false, or too far a stretch, regardless of the view point, but I don’t always succeed. As always on the Net, or in the legacy media, you must read critically and with skepticism.

Worth Reading: Did Obama Just Throw The Entire Election Away? By Andrew Sullivan in The Daily Beast
Excerpt: Look: I'm trying to rally some morale, but I've never seen a candidate this late in the game, so far ahead, just throw in the towel in the way Obama did last week - throw away almost every single advantage he had with voters and manage to enable his opponent to seem as if he cares about the middle class as much as Obama does. How do you erase that imprinted first image from public consciousness: a president incapable of making a single argument or even a halfway decent closing statement? (Wow. We get encouraging news from Daily Beast? This is the same Daily Beast that had Romney roasted, basted, stuffed and ready to be served for dinner a week ago. Thank God for doom and gloom in the enemy camp. BUT! Don’t believe it just yet. Every conservative pundit has been saying for months that the polls were incorrectly skewed; should we suddenly start to take them seriously because they say what we want to hear? We need to work hard to hold any real gains and improve our chances of winning in the only poll that matters, the one on Election Day. --Ron P.)

I'm moving beyond devastated to suicidal.

Worth Reading: The President's Bad Night That Wasn't. By Andy Weddington
Excerpt: "Nearly 50 million of the 70 million people who watched the game, the debate - if you want to call it that, said Mr. Romney won. He did - with command of facts, articulate answers and rebuttals, humor, and a strong, determined presence. Anyone who tuned in and did not know who the two were would have concluded Mr. Romney was the sitting president ... Odd as it may seem, there's some hope Mr. Biden can change the dynamics that came from last week's debate."

Worth Reading: Phony in Chief. By Thomas Sowell
Excerpt: When President Barack Obama and others on the left are not busy admonishing the rest of us to be "civil" in our discussions of political issues, they are busy letting loose insults, accusations and smears against those who dare to disagree with them. Like so many people who have been beaten in a verbal encounter, and who can think of clever things to say the next day, after it is all over, President Obama, after his clear loss in his debate with Mitt Romney, called Governor Romney a "phony." Innumerable facts, however, show that it is our Commander in Chief who is Phony in Chief.

Racist Liberals (or is that redundant?)
Stacey Dash (@REALStaceyDash) is a black actress who supported Obama in 2008, announced she has switched to Romney this time, and is being savaged for it on Twitter. If you are on Twitter, follow her out of support. Her blog is non-political, more poetry, from what I've read:

Pennsylvania Poll: Susquehanna Poll: Obama 47, Romney 45
Excerpt: Barack Obama leads Mitt Romney by a 2 point margin, identical to his lead in late September according to Susquehanna Polling and Research. But the Republican’s debate performance contributed to a 6 point jump in his favorability rating.

Obama’s Boys on the Bus: The media pull out all the stops to reelect the president. By Fred Barnes
Excerpt: The Time cover story last week was headlined “The Mormon Identity.” The cover, featuring Mitt Romney in a stained-glass window, said in smaller type, “What Mitt Romney’s faith tells us about his vision and values.” Newsweek had President Obama on the cover, identifying him as “The Democrats’ Reagan” and heralding the story inside as “What Obama Will Achieve in His Second Term.” Neither of the stories, to put it mildly, was helpful to Romney’s presidential campaign.

Bankrupt green loan loser Abound Solar now under investigation in Colorado. By Michelle Malkin
Excerpt: If it’s a day that ends in “y,” it’s a day of trouble for an Obama green loan recipient somewhere in America. Like Mitt Romney said during the debate last week, the crony-in-chief doesn’t just pick winners and losers, he picks the losers:

Muslims Threaten Market Vendors Who Sell Wine, Pork and Light Clothing
Excerpt: [Last week,]...in the market of Chemin Bas d’Avignon in Nîmes, Muslims threatened wine sellers, a butcher who sells pork and a pork butcher, as well as vendors who sell "light clothing", and banned them from coming back on pain of death. Already, a few months ago, a pork butcher disappeared from one day to the next, even though he had a good clientèle. No one understood why, according to a resident of the district.

Princeton Economist Harvey Rosen: Obama Campaign Misrepresenting My Work On Romney's Tax Plan
Excerpt: The Obama campaign claims that a Princeton economist's findings support its assertions about Mitt Romney's tax plan, but the economist says that's not exactly true.

The Dodd-Frank Act versus the Rule of Law
Excerpt: In response to the 2008 financial collapse, Congress passed the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Dodd-Frank increased regulation of banks, stockbrokers, insurers and other financial institutions that are "too big -- or interconnected -- to fail" and that could require a government bailout to prevent a banking system collapse, says Roger Koppl, a professor of economics and finance in the Silberman College of Business and director of the Institute for Forensic Science Administration at Fairleigh Dickinson University, and a senior fellow with the National Center for Policy Analysis. The Act created a board -- the Financial Stability Oversight Council -- composed mostly of the heads of various federal financial regulatory agencies, including some newly created agencies. The Council has the responsibility to identify institutions whose failure might create systemic distress -- and the discretion to impose "prudential" regulations on them different from the regulations imposed on other financial institutions.

George Osborne's CO2 tax will double UK electricity bills: There's a nasty shock in store for the British householder when a new 'carbon' tax comes into force. By Christopher Booker
Excerpt: Fast approaching, if largely unnoticed, is yet another massive shock the Government has in store for us with its weirdly distorted energy policy. It is surprising to see what an abnormally high proportion of the electricity needed to keep our lights on has lately been coming from coal-fired power stations. Last Wednesday evening, for instance, this was over 50 per cent, with only 1.3 per cent coming from wind power. (Progressives are always willing to stick it to the poor and working class if it lets them feel warm and fuzzy about the environment. ~Bob.)

Corruption in Europe
Excerpt: Corruption is thought to cost the EU 120 billion euros a year in lost revenue and it has helped fuel the economic crisis that has spiralled some countries close to economic meltdown. Is corruption killing Europe? To discuss this worrying trend Isabelle Kumar is joined ‘On The Frontline’ by Michelle Coninsx, President of Eurojust which aims to improve judicial co-operation between member states, and Cobus de Swardt, Managing Director of anti-corruption organisation Transparency International. (BBC ran an article showing that Greece was cooking the books to enter the Eurozone, but the Eurozone had to know this when they admitted Greece. So the corruption is endemic, pervading the Eurozone (and the EU by extension--and let's not forget the US). So the "leaders" are not in a good position to be criticising others for corruption. Closing one's eyes to corruption is a form of corruption. The worst.

The Emerging Doctrine of the United States. By George Friedman
Leading from way behind. ~Bob. Excerpt: Over the past weekend, rumors began to emerge that the Syrian opposition would allow elements of the al Assad regime to remain in Syria and participate in the new government. Rumors have become Syria's prime export, and as such they should not be taken too seriously. Nevertheless, what is happening in Syria is significant for a new foreign doctrine emerging in the United States -- a doctrine in which the United States does not take primary responsibility for events, but which allows regional crises to play out until a new regional balance is reached. Whether a good or bad policy -- and that is partly what the U.S. presidential race is about -- it is real, and it flows from lessons learned.

How Obama's Foreign Policy Is Failing
Excerpt: President Obama said that in his Administration, America would reach out to other countries as “an equal partner” rather than as the “exceptional” nation that many before him had embraced; that “any world order that elevates one nation or group of people over another will inevitably fail.” His political approach to foreign policy—making decisions that appeal to a political base rather than making military sense—is putting American lives and American interests in danger.

Plant that got $150M in taxpayer money to make Volt batteries furloughs workers
Excerpt: President Obama touted it in 2010 as evidence "manufacturing jobs are coming back to the United States,” but two years later, a Michigan hybrid battery plant built with $150 million in taxpayer funds is putting workers on furlough before a single battery has been produced. (More taxpayer-funded Green Jobs up in smoke—with your money. ~Bob.)

Report: Federally-backed Abound Solar under criminal probe
Excerpt: Local media in Colorado are reporting that bankrupt Abound Solar, one of the administration’s many federal green energy funding recipients, is now under investigation by the local Weld County, Colo., district attorney.

Sesame Street received $1 mil stimulus bill grant – created “1.47″ jobs
Excerpt: This grant was brought to you by the letters “A” and “R” — as in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, aka the “stimulus bill.” (I’m claiming “Big Bird” as a dependent on my taxes this year. ~Bob.

Excerpt: A wireless company profiting from the so-called “Obama phone” giveaway program is run by a prominent Democratic donor whose wife has raised more than $1.5 million for the president since 2007. (Let me see your shocked face. ~Bob.)

Surge: Romney Leads In All 11 Swing States. By John Nolte
Excerpt: On top of all the other magic he works, Scott Rasmussen also conducts a daily poll of the eleven swing states won by Obama in 2008 and considered competitive today. This includes Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin. Romney has not been in the lead in this poll since Sept. 19. As recently as last week, Obama was 4 to 6 points ahead.
Today, Romney is up by 2, 49-46%. (Not sure I believe this. Don’t stop fighting now. ~Bob.)

Excerpt: The International Monetary Fund cut its global growth forecasts as the euro area’s debt crisis intensifies and warned of even slower expansion unless officials in the U.S. and Europe address threats to their economies.

Excerpt: Mayor Dave Bing announced at a press conference Monday that Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee submitted a sudden letter of retirement following claims the city’s police chief was involved in a relationship with a subordinate.

Worth Reading: Reality: More People Requested Emergency Food Assistance Than Found Jobs
Excerpt: More disturbing is that in the same month, the number of US households reliant on foodstamps rose by a whopping 99,493 to 22,541,744. Assuming a modest 2 persons per household, the increase means that more people went on Foodstamps in the month of July than found jobs. Adding the number of disability recipients in the month of July, which in that month rose by 20,474, and one can see why the government is quite happy with dumping this particular release long after everyone was on their way back home for the weekend.

Philippines and U.S. Start Joint Exercises
Excerpt: Marines from the Philippines and the United States began 10 days of joint exercises focused on disaster relief, humanitarian assistance and maritime security.

The Mind of a Liberal. By Neal Boortz

Media Tells Voters "Stay Home"; Obama Won
Excerpt: Come November 6th folks, if you're a Romney supporter, you don't need to go out and vote. The liberal media has just declared Obama the winner of the 2012 Presidential election. I just finished reading a state by state analysis done by the New York Times and they give Obama a 80 to 20 advantage over Mitt Romney.

How California Could Stop Its Population Exodus. By Walter Williams
Excerpt: The downside to such a tax strategy is the fact that people are already leaving California in great numbers. According to a Manhattan Institute study, “The Great California Exodus: A Closer Look,” by Thomas Gray and Robert Scardamalia (October 2012), roughly 225,000 residents leave California each year — and have done so for the past 10 years. They take their money with them.

I Donated to Barack Obama
Excerpt: Before you even get to the first post below, please click here. (http://www.redstate.com/2012/10/08/the-obama-campaign-processed-this-donation/) This is very important. The picture you are looking at is a screen shot relevant to my first post below. It is the information I submitted to Barack Obama's campaign. It is completely and totally made up. It is nonsensical. Nothing adds up. But Barack Obama's campaign processed that donation anyway. Look at it again and remember that just basic controls would have never even allowed this donation to be processed. Okay, now you can read the related post as the first item! – Erick Erickson

Report: Obama Campaign Soliciting Foreign Donations (Again). By Bryan Preston
Excerpt: Having run an online donation page for a political party, I’ve been on the inside of this question. It’s industry standard to include the CVV field; someone typically has to disable that field intentionally. Disabling the CVV field opens the donation page up to accepting money from foreign sources and from identity thieves who may have stolen credit card information from unsuspecting innocent parties….We’re on our third iteration of this foreign donation scandal for Barack Obama.

Obama Campaign Has No Security to Bar Illegal Foreign Donations. By Mike Flynn
Excerpt: But a blockbuster new report from the Government Accountability Institute (GAI) raises serious questions about the legality of many of the on-line donations to Obama. It appears as though the Obama Campaign has the perfect portal for illegal foreign donations (visit campaignfundingrisks.com to download the full report). … The most revealing finding in the report is that the Obama campaign has chosen not to use industry-standard verification methods for its on-line contributions.

Foreign Donations Undermine U.S. By Tony Lee
Excerpt: Foreigners have long tried to influence America’s elections though illicit campaign contributions, and a new report by the Government Accountability Institute (GAI) found foreigners no longer need middlemen to circumvent America’s campaign finance laws. Instead, they can undermine America’s sovereignty with a click -- or multiple clicks -- of the mouse. Peter Schweizer, president of GAI, told Breitbart News the ease with which foreigners could donate to American candidates puts America’s sovereignty in peril.

Dozens of rockets, mortars hit south
Didn’t get the memo. ~Bob. Excerpt: Terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip fired some 55 rockets and mortar shells at southern Israel early Monday morning. The shells landed in communities in the Eshkol Regional Council. There were no reports of injuries, although two buildings were lightly damaged and several goats were killed due to an explosion in an animal corner.

Obama’s Plan for Ohio: Making suburban taxpayers prop up failing Democratic cities. By Stanley Kurtz

CBS report: Lt. Col. Andy Wood, former head of a Special Forces in Libya, asked State Department for enhanced security ... but all requests were ignored (they were told to do with less)
Excerpt: It's hard to believe that CBS actually reported news that clearly proves that the Obama administration's failures resulted in the deaths of Ambassador Stevens and three other Americans. In this video, former head of a Special Forces in Libya, Lt. Col. Andy Wood, states without reservation that he asked State Department for more security in Libya as concerns continued to grow after the State Department removed as many as 34 people from the country over the last six months before the terrorist attack in Benghazi.

DHS officials blast congressional report. By Jordy Yager http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/259915-dhs-senators-trade-barbs
Excerpt: The Department of Homeland Security is trading barbs with top senators over a new congressional report that criticizes the agency for not using state and local fusion centers to produce more valuable counterterrorism intelligence reports. Sens. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) issued the bipartisan report Tuesday night, concluding that DHS officials at the state and local fusion centers wasted taxpayer dollars by analyzing and relaying information that was either duplicative or not related to counterterrorism measures.

Study: Costs will rise on mid-size firms from new healthcare law. By Sam Baker
Excerpt: President Obama's healthcare law won't erode employer-based health insurance — but it will raise some companies' costs by nearly 10 percent, according to a new analysis from the Urban Institute. Although the law's critics usually focus on small businesses, the new paper says medium-sized firms will see the biggest cost increase. Mid-sized businesses — firms that have between 101 and 1,000 employees — would have seen a 9.5 percent jump in their total healthcare costs if the Affordable Care Act had been fully in place this year, the paper says.

Excerpt: Polls are starting to reflect the results of last week’s debate, so it must be time for another exciting edition of WtEC. That’s pronounced “We-Tech,” which couldn’t be further from the truth. I’ll get the controversial bit out of the way first, and go with my gut that Colorado is most likely out of reach for Team Obama. What I’m seeing on the ground and hearing from locals just doesn’t mesh with Empty Chair taking the Centennial State again.

Libya: Parliament Ousts Prime Minister
Excerpt: Libya's rule was in the hands of factious lawmakers Monday after they ousted the newly elected prime minister following their rejection of his proposed Cabinet….With the dismissal, Libya now also lacks ministers of defense and interior, responsible for apprehending the killers of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens, The New York Times reported.

Sesame Workshop to Obama: Take Big Bird ad down
Excerpt: Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization behind Sesame Street, is requesting that the Obama campaign take down a new ad portraying Mitt Romney as more concerned with Big Bird than Wall Street criminals. "Sesame Workshop is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization and we do not endorse candidates or participate in political campaigns," the group said. "We have approved no campaign ads, and as is our general practice, have requested that the ad be taken down."

What's Behind the Swiss Gearing Up for Major Unrest Through Out Europe? By Robert Wenzel
Excerpt: John R. Schindler, a professor of national security affairs at the U.S. Naval War College, is out with a fascinating report. The Swiss are apparently gearing up for the possibility of major civil unrest throughout Europe. It's difficult to say for sure, whether Swiss officials really see an increased threat or whether this is just an expansion of the Swiss state, an expansion typical of most governments these days, who will attempt to create fear in any way possible to grow the state.

Study: Poll Respondents More Likely to Lie About Voter Registration, Receive Welfare Benefits. By Matthew Sheffield
Excerpt: Thanks to a study examining the accuracy of polling, we now know that in some areas, surveys can be disturbingly inaccurate, in large part because people are willing to outright lie to a pollster. According to a report issued by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, 60 percent of people who aren’t registered to vote will falsely claim to be registered. Daily Kos/SEIU State of the Nation poll: Romney takes the lead in post-debate period

It is inline with all other national polling showing Romney making gains in the wake of his debate performance last week. (If the trends continue, expect a desperation move from Obama, which could help him—or be an unforced error. ~Bob.)

Bankrupt California: No money for crumbling roads, but billions for high-speed rail. By Victor Davis Hanson
Excerpt: I thought of my fellow Californian Energy Secretary Steven Chu last week, when I paid $4.89 a gallon in Gilroy for regular gas — and had to wait in line to get it. The customers were in near revolt, but I wondered against what and whom. I mentioned to one exasperated motorist that there are estimated to be over 20 billion barrels of oil a few miles away, in newly found reserves off the California coast. He thought I was from Mars.
