Old Jarhead's Political SitRep for September 6, 2012

Formerly "Political Digest." (I decided to change the name when I saw there were too many "political digests" around. Some folks thought I was copying others when my readers and I were compiling this one. "SitRep" is military speak for "Situation Report.") Bringing you news and information the MSM is too busy covering American Idol, celebrity affairs and sensational missing person cases to cover. Please forward to friends who need to be informed. Sorry that yesterday’s SitRep was dated August in error—hard to keep up with the thunderous passage of time. ~Bob

The National Debt has topped $16 trillion. As they say at the DNC in Charlotte, “We Make It Possible!” Congratulations to President Obama and the Democrats: “You Built That!”

$16,000,000,000,000
Excerpt: Yesterday, the U.S. national debt passed $16 trillion. On President Barack Obama's watch, the debt has increased by 50 percent, as campaign promise after campaign promise has drowned in a sea of federal spending. When he was running for President, Obama condemned George W. Bush for adding $4 trillion to the national debt over eight years, calling it "irresponsible" and "unpatriotic." Now—in less than four years—Obama's Administration has already added almost $6 trillion to the debt. That means he is on track to triple Bush's debt increase over eight years.

It’s Not $16 Trillion — It’s $222 Trillion. By Gary DeMar.
Excerpt: No matter who becomes president in November, he’s going to be confronted with a huge fiscal storm that no levee or dam will be able to hold back the flood waters of an insurmountable and unfathomable debt. In his review of Dinesh D’Souza’s film 2016: Obama’s America, Dr. Gary North notes that there are at least three important topics that the film does not address. One of them is the real deficit that no one wants to talk about. (Have I mentioned I think we are facing fiscal collapse? I did? Oh, never mind then—back to the TV. ~Bob.)

Sure: Dems move Obama's speech to smaller venue
Excerpt: President Obama's acceptance speech has been moved from the Bank of America Stadium to the Time Warner Cable Arena, Democrats announced Wednesday.
The move is because of "severe weather forecasts," the Democratic National Convention Committee said in a statement. (The “weather” they were worried about was “whether” there would be enough butts to fill half the seats at the stadium. ~Bob.)

The ‘Risk’ of Being Poor. By Neal Boortz
Excerpt: Melissa’s meltdown (Can I just call her Melissa? The Harris Hyphen Perry is tiring) occurred on her show over this past weekend. The topic had turned to welfare and income mobility. Melissa apparently lost it when a guest on her show suggested that people move from lower to higher income brackets by taking risks. Oh my! Now THAT yanked Melissa’s chain.

Holder derides Washington Times for editorial ripping his new targeted disabilities’ policy. By Matthew Boyle
Excerpt: In a letter to the editor published Monday, Attorney General Eric Holder accused the Washington Times of running an “ill-informed” and “offensive” editorial in late August that criticized new hiring policies at the Department of Justice…. “The memo lists a number of ‘targeted disabilities’ that trigger special hiring privileges in compliance with President Obama’s Executive Order 13548,” the Times editorial board wrote. “Among them are people with ‘severe intellectual disability,’ ‘psychiatric disability’ or other undefined ‘current severe physical, intellectual or mental conditions.’

Rev. Jesse Jackson: Farmers, grocers to benefit from record food-stamps By Nicholas Ballasy
Excerpt: Rev. Jesse Jackson told The Daily Caller that farmers and grocers “will benefit” from increasing numbers of food stamp recipients in the United States. Jackson said Tuesday that it’s “morally correct” to provide food stamps, when asked if the record-high 46.7 million. (Well, give them to everybody—let’s really help the farmers and grocery chains. ~Bob.)

Suicide bomber kills 30 Afghans in attack at funeral
Didn’t get the “Islam is a Religion of Peace” memo. ~Bob. Excerpt: The suicide bomber attacked civilians at a funeral ceremony for a resident of the Door Baba district in Nangarhar, according to Pajhwok Afghan News. Among those in attendance were local government officials, including the district governor of Door Baba, and tribal leaders.

Questions over finances dog House candidate, former Obama official Tammy Duckworth
Excerpt: Duckworth, who owns a private plane, has faced questions over her personal finances throughout her career. She improperly used state money to attend a 2008 campaign event for congressional candidate Dan Seals, violating Illinois state law by driving there in a state-owned van. She apologized and repaid the state for the inappropriate use of the vehicle.

Obama’s ‘distractions’ are ‘insulting
Excerpt: South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley joined four other GOP lawmakers at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, just outside of the Bank of America stadium where Obama will accept his party’s nomination on Thursday. She followed up on her breakout performance at the Republican National Convention by slamming the president for trying to distract women voters with issues like contraception.

September is Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Month
Yeah, I know PF isn’t political, though it kills as many—probably more—people than breast cancer. Have to have a defined victim group to get the big research dollars, pink ribbons, TV time, celebs etc. of the political diseases. But I do take a personal interest. ~Bob.

Excerpt: Recent months have taught us something important about the Obama White House. Listen to the silence — listen carefully to what the president has not said in recent weeks about leaks that endanger the country, a revolting accusation in a campaign ad, and the relationship between Obamacare and religious freedom. On all three issues, the president could have stood up for honor and decency without hurting himself politically. But he didn’t; and so we are forced to wonder just how much he values honor and decency.

Worth Reading: The New Reactionaries: The causes of poverty, the effects of liberal policies — such things are undiscussable. By Victor Davis Hanson
Excerpt: What had once been a daring liberal agenda gradually ossified into a reactionary dogma that the poor are always to be defined in relative terms to those better off, never by absolute standards of global wealth and poverty, and thus are always in need of yet more government help. The goal became collective equality rather than a safety net to mitigate the effects of misfortune, accident, and illness.

What the 2012 Election Means for Israel. If elected, Romney will be staunchly loyal, but Obama’s coldness will turn glacial. By Daniel Pipes
Excerpt: Second, attitudes toward Israel serve as a proxy for views on other Middle East issues: If I know your views on Israel, I have a good idea about your thinking on topics such as energy policy, Islamism, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, AKP-led Turkey, the Iranian nuclear buildup, intervention in Libya, the Mohamed Morsi presidency in Egypt, and the Syrian civil war.

Worth Watching: Obama - The Anti-Israel President
And sharing. ~Bob.

legal Immigrant ‘Undocu-Bus’ Rolls Into Charlotte For DNC. By Tony Lee
No danger—they won’t get in without IDs, because the Democrats are racist and require them. ~Bob. Excerpt: Emboldened by President Barack Obama's executive action that allows some illegal immigrants to apply for work permits, a group of illegal immigrants on the "Undocu-Bus" arrived in Charlotte during the week of the Democratic National Convention to advocate for broader amnesty programs.

U.S. tells Iran it will not participate in an Israeli strike
Contrary to recent claims that its military coordination with Israel is excellent, the U.S. has secretly informed Iran that it will not participate in an Israeli air strike on its nuclear facilities. (Once upon a time there was a bully who periodically but often inflicted hurt on a little brother and his bigger, more powerful brother. He used sneaky tricks and traps to inflict pain, and to make them afraid, he loudly and constantly kept threatening them with a fatal beating. The bully took great pleasure in belittling the little brother in public, singling him out for destruction for bad things he himself was well known for doing. Now we hear that the big brother has some friends tell the bully that if he leaves the big brother alone, he won't help his little brother defend himself. Some brother! His parents should take away his allowance and deny him the car keys for 4 years. Cordially, Larry Greenberg)

Iran's navy aims to sail off US shores soon
Excerpt: The head of Iran's navy says the country aims to put its warships in international waters off the U.S. coast "in the next few years." The comments Tuesday from Admiral Habibollah Sayyari on state TV are part of Iran's response to Washington's beefed up naval presence in the Persian Gulf.

OMG, Obama Must Go, as TV AD Urges Voters Replace Him

GOP launches 'Obama Isn't Working' message at DNC
Excerpt: The Republican National Committee debuted a new Web video and launched a website, with the theme of "Obama Isn't Working." The website will be updated frequently while Democrats gather here this week to formally nominate Obama to a second White House term.

Nickolodeon: Cyber-Bully Jason Biggs Appropriate For Kids. By Ben Shapiro
Excerpt: How many tweets about the anuses of conservative women does it take to get fired from Nickelodeon? Imagine if Biggs had tweeted about the “bleached asshole” of Michelle Obama. But when it’s Republicans being slandered – or Republican wives – Nickelodeon and Viacom (its parent company) seem to have no problem. (Frankly, I wouldn’t watch this individual anywhere. But I heard he was famous for doing something with an all-American apple pie….pretty perverse as well. Perfect for molding young, impressionable minds. Maybe Holder at DOJ will snap him up for his deviancy? So WHO has a war on women? Really? From the actions, it looks like Dems have no respect for REAL WOMEN. –Barb. Damn. Another personality I don’t know and don’t think I every watched, so hard to boycott him. ~Bob.)

Excerpt: A federal judge ruled Friday that Ohio’s uniform voting law that gives special privileges to military voters is unconstitutional. Judge Peter Economus, a retired judge brought in to hear overload cases in the Southern District of Ohio, Columbus Division, also ruled by fiat to impose statewide weekend voting hours on the entire state. The Obama for America campaign, the DNC, and the Ohio Democratic Party had sued Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted in an attempt to overturn several Ohio election reform laws and directives which attempted to assure uniform voting days and times across the state, with some expanded privileges for military voters in accordance with the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA).

DNC: ‘Government is the only thing that we all belong to’
Excerpt: Democrats think they knows what unites Americans — the government — and they released a video at the Democratic National Convention making that argument today. (Don't believe that's exactly what the founding fathers had in mind. --MasterGuns. Surfs belong to the government. The government belongs to free people. ~Bob.)

Emerging theme: Obama's 'selfish' and 'arrogant'
Not exactly breaking news. ~Bob. Excerpt: But in the run up to the convention, it's clear that there are people who have had extensive dealings with him, and they don't like him very much.

Well Done: Honey, You Didn't Build That
Great film clip. Share this. ~Bob

Subprime Bubble: Obama 'Vampire Socialism' Built It
Excerpt: Previously unpublished court documents reveal that as a young lawyer from Chicago, President Obama's lawsuit against big banks started inflating the housing bubble that created the mess he says he inherited. We have often written that the true roots of our current economic crisis lay in the excesses of the1977 Community Reinvestment Act as redefined under the Clinton administration.

Christian murders, torture by Egyptians ignored by Obama, media
Excerpt: Egypt’s so-called Arab Spring quickly turned into a Christian winter following the political rise of Islamists and increased assaults on Christians and churches. As a result, an estimated 100,000 Christians have fled or are preparing to flee the country, according to a report by International Christian Concerns on Monday.

Castro defends Obama’s economic record in keynote address
Different Castro—but not that different. ~Bob. Excerpt: Rising Democratic star Julian Castro defended President Obama's economic record in his keynote address to the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night.

(San Antonio Mayor) Julian Castro: A Radical Revealed. By Charles C. Johnson
Excerpt: But while Obama’s radicalism may have escaped the notice of the DNC in 2004, Castro’s views are bit more transparent. Indeed, he, along with his twin, Joaquin, currently running for Congress, learned their politics on their mother’s knee and in the streets of San Antonio. Their mother, Rosie helped found a radical, anti-white, socialist Chicano party called La Raza Unida (literally “The Race United”) that sought to create a separate country—Aztlan—in the Southwest.

Excerpt: Yet Castro, who played up his Mexican heritage by speaking a few lines in Spanish, admits “he doesn’t really speak Spanish,” according to a 2010 profile in The New York Times Magazine.

Worth Reading: The surprising ingredients of Swedish success – free markets and social cohesion
Excerpt: Sweden did not become wealthy through social democracy, big government and a large welfare state. It developed economically by adopting free-market policies in the late 19th century and early 20th century. It also benefited from positive cultural norms, including a strong work ethic and high levels of trust. As late as 1950, Swedish tax revenues were still only around 21 per cent of GDP. The policy shift towards a big state and higher taxes occurred mainly during the next thirty years, as taxes increased by almost one per cent of GDP annually The rapid growth of the state in the late 1960s and 1970s led to a large decline in Sweden’s relative economic performance. In 1975, Sweden was the 4th richest industrialised country in terms of GDP per head. By 1993, it had fallen to 14th. Big government had a devastating impact on entrepreneurship.

Why My Head Is Spinning. By Burt Prelutsky
Excerpt: I understand why liberals want to get elected to political office. After all, not everyone can be a millionaire, but at least if you’re elected to Congress, you get to live like one. You get to receive all sorts of perks, including a bevy of aides and interns whom you don’t have to pay out of your own pocket, but who are nevertheless ready at a moment’s notice to gas up your car, drive you to the airport and pick up your dry cleaning. The part I don’t get is why anyone would want to vote for them.

Princeton’s Iranian Agent of Influence. By Reuel Marc Gerecht
http://www.defenddemocracy.org/media-hit/princetons-iranian-agent-of-influence/
Excerpt: As the Islamic Revolution has devoured its own, many Iranians have sought refuge in the West. After the fraudulent 2009 presidential elections and the crackdown that followed, the United States and Europe were flooded with Iranian pro-democracy dissidents and even pro-regime types who fell afoul of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s shrinking definition of “loyal.” In this latter category is the former ambassador and nuclear negotiator Seyed Hossein Mousavian, who left Iran in 2009 and has since resided at Princeton University

A Bad Joke: The Sad Reality of Jews in Europe. By Emanuele Ottolenghi
Excerpt: Yet, we should not mistake an enthusiastic embrace of dead Jews and their artefacts, or of living Jews and their active participation in Western culture, as a sign that Jews are fully welcome. At least, not on their own terms.

Disturbing Western Tepidness on Saudi Homophobia. By Benjamin Weinthal
Excerpt: Europe being Europe, there is unfortunate precedent for the capitulation to the Saudi kingdom’s dictates. Germany’s out gay foreign minister, Guido Westerwelle, after all, defended his decision to not bring his husband Michael Mronz to Saudi Arabia in 2010, saying, “We want to encourage the idea of tolerance around the world, but we don’t want to achieve the opposite either by acting imprudently.” (The gays’ problem is that, while they have become more Politically Correct than blacks, Hispanics and women, Muslims are, thanks to 9/11 appeasement, more Politically Correct than gays—and Shari’a Law calls for the execution of gays. Can’t condemn that, because “all cultures are equally valid. Except for western culture that gave rise to human rights, of course. ~Bob.)

Iran Supplying Syrian Military via Iraqi Airspace
Excerpt: Iran has resumed shipping military equipment to Syria over Iraqi airspace in a new effort to bolster the embattled government of President Bashar al-Assad of Syria, according to senior American officials. (So, Barack, how’s that “soft power,” foreign policy reset, outreach working out for you? ~Bob.)

Iranian Nuke Progress Mounts
Excerpt: A new United Nations nuclear watchdog report on Iran’s nuclear program reveals Tehran is moving ahead with illicit uranium enrichment work, undermining Obama administration claims that sanctions will slow the program.

The Fruits of Bilingualism: Shootings Mar Victory Party for Separatists in Quebec
Excerpt: A speech by Pauline Marois, whose separatist Parti Québécois claimed a victory in a provincial election on Tuesday, was abruptly cut short when a man fired shots near an entrance to the hall where she was speaking, leaving one man dead and another in critical condition. Montreal police officials said that the shootings took place near a back door of the meeting hall. As Ms. Marois was stating her “firm conviction that Quebec needs to become a sovereign country,” she was pulled off the stage by two plainclothes officers. (Note to the US: Bilingualism very often leads to dissention, disunion and violent destruction. ~Bob.)

Reader response to “The Terrifying New Normal” by Victor Davis Hanson
I'm quite surprised that Hanson's first observation about the "new normal" is not a key election issue. When one considers the proclivity of the AARP cohorts to vote, how can one not be alarmed to see one's saving's be eaten up by even minimal inflation. Interest on savings is almost zero, US bonds and CDs pay little more. Fed and tax policies do not incent savings from any cohort of the population. Common sense normally argues for savings to supplement Social Security and tax-deferred plans. However, under current circumstance, unless that money is put at risk heretofore uncommon for such purposes, saved principal would be eroded. When candidates talk about the sacred middle class and the need to protect the elderly, who is talking about protecting that which they have properly earned and saved? As for young people, if they indeed have jobs that pay, there is little talk (except perhaps for Ryan who is touting self-directed retirement funds as a social security option) about how they are to build their nest eggs. Cordially, Larry Greenberg

Quotes from The Patriot Post
"Just about this time in 2010, the Obama administration, in the person of Treasury secretary Timothy Geithner, proclaimed to the world that the economic recovery had begun. 'Welcome To The Recovery' was the title of Geithner's op-ed in the New York Times. 'Exports are booming,' Geithner boasted. 'Businesses have repaired their balance sheets and are now in a strong financial position to reinvest and grow.' Someone at one of the debates should ask how, after a short burst of reasonable growth in 2010, George W. Bush was able to reach out and crush the Obama economy." --columnist Mona Charen

"A man in Florida has been arrested for wearing a President Obama mask while robbing a McDonald's. To show you how good this guy's disguise was, instead of a holdup note he was reading from a teleprompter." --comedian Jay Leno

"At a campaign rally, Michelle Obama encouraged people to 'get to the polls on November 2nd.' I don't usually support Obama voters, but this is a movement I could get behind." --Fred Thompson, noting that Election Day is Nov. 6

Worth Reading: Mr. Obama's America: "Where Everything's Free But Us." By Ken Blackwell
Excerpt: In all too many cases, however, such interventions produced devastating results. Family breakdown in America can be traced to these interventions of the 1960s. At the time of Pearl Harbor in 1941, for example, 89% of black children were born to married parents. By the mid-1960s, however, the number of out-of-wedlock births to black mothers had doubled. (It’s well documented that black kids who want to get an education in our cities are mocked for “acting white.” I wonder if black men who want to get married and support their kids are mocked by fellow blacks the same way. ~Bob.)

Solyndra backers could reap $341 million in tax breaks
Obama’s Magic Green Money Machine keeps paying off. ~Bob. CNN calls out Dems! CNN Fact Check: About those 4.5 million jobs ...
Excerpt: Anyone watching the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night heard the number 4.5 million several times.

The Racist, Bloody Truth About Democrats. By Joseph Farah
Excerpt: Looking around the room, Biden said in his best attempt at a Delaware drawl: “They’re going to put y’all back in chains.” Biden is hardly alone. Democrats have been lying about themselves and their opponents for so long, few Americans understand the deep history of racism in the party. Even fewer comprehend that Republicans were the liberators of the slaves and the party that fought segregation.

LONDON: Muslims viciously attack Army troops on duty at Paralympics
Excerpt: Army officers have told troops on duty for the Paralympics to travel around in groups after servicemen were “attacked, verbally abused and harassed” during the Olympics.

Bumbling on ‘better off’---Team O tellingly tongue-tied. By Rich Lowry
Excerpt: ‘Are people better off than they were four years ago?” is hardly a trick question. It’s one of the most reliable clichés in American politics. So Gov. Martin O’Malley, a Democrat from Maryland, should have been ready with some handy dodge when he was asked the question by Bob Schieffer of “Face the Nation.”

Emails: Obama officials enriched former firms, possibly themselves with auto bailout. By Matthew Boyle
Excerpt: During the auto bailout, now former Treasury official Matt Feldman, Obama Auto Task Force adviser Harry Wilson and other administration officials drove the Delphi pension cutoffs for non-union retirees. Their actions violated a federal statute that identified the quasi-independent Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation (PBGC) as the only government entity legally empowered to initiate termination of a pension or make official movements toward doing so.

Five Extreme Things the Professor Won’t Mention in Her DNC Speech. By Patrick Howley
Excerpt: Harvard Law School professor and consumer advocate Elizabeth Warren will speak tonight before former President Bill Clinton at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Charlotte. Warren is running for a U.S. Senate seat in Massachusetts on a platform calling for between $1 trillion and $3.4 trillion in tax hikes, and an ideology that “there is nobody in this country who got rich on his own.” Warren has a number of skeletons in her closet, including close links to radical left-wing pressure groups and a record of helping corporate interests suppress asbestos liability lawsuits.

Excerpt: Let's pretend that we have the political guts to expand economic opportunities for people at the lower end of the economic spectrum. What vested interests should be attacked, and what economic regulations should be targeted for elimination? It doesn't take a lot of money to become a taxi owner-operator and earn more than $40,000 a year.

Black "Uncle Toms"
Excerpt: 94% of all African Americans will go to the polls this November and vote for Obama and the straight Democratic ticket. They have done so for fifty years, no matter how the economy is going or how badly is their own economic situation. Then you have six percent of African Americans who will not. Folks like Mia Love, Allen West, Thomas Sowell. Who the hell are these "six percenters that dare defy their liberal masters? (“I’ll have those niggers voting Democratic for the next 200 years.”
- Lyndon B. Johnson)

Official: Obama will make Bibi pay after elections

Israeli security cabinet meeting adjourned due to leaks on secret Iran strategy talks. By Joel Greenberg
Excerpt: …..Israeli officials have been pressing for a forceful statement by President Obama that would specify what steps, including military action, could be taken against Iran if it continues its nuclear program, suggesting that a tougher stance would reduce the need for Israel to act on its own. … “What is needed now to help stop Iran are some clearly defined lines in the sand,” Gold said. “Otherwise, in the months ahead they’re going to be rounding third base and heading toward nuclear home plate.”

Israel PM condemns security cabinet leak
Excerpt: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has abandoned a meeting of top security officials after details were leaked to the media. Mr Netanyahu described the leak as very serious, and said those responsible had violated "the most basic trust". One minister said the security cabinet should face lie-detector tests. (Was Obama there? ~Bob.)

Stupack: HHS Mandate Violates My Obamacare Compromise. By Tabitha Hale
Excerpt: Former Congressman Bart Stupak admits a compromise he made with Barack Obama to pass the Affordable Care Act is invalidated by HHS's controversial mandate for taxpayer-funded contraception, including abortion-inducing drugs. … Stupak responded, “I am perplexed and disappointed that, having negotiated the Executive Order with the President, not only does the HHS mandate violate the Executive Order but it also violates statutory law. (Could he have been that stupid? Or paid off? ~Bob.)

Democrats focus on equal pay issue while Obama White House pays women less. By David Martosko
Excerpt: Government records show that despite the Democratic National Convention’s early focus on salary equality for women, President Barack Obama has consistently paid his own female staffers less than men who perform similar or identical duties. Such a gender pay gap, he claimed, “weakens families; it weakens communities; it’s tough on our kids; it weakens our entire economy.” But data from the Obama White House’s 2011 annual report show that female staffers there earn a median salary 18 percent lower than that of men.

John Cusack Interviews Law Professor Jonathan Turley About Obama Administration’s War On the Constitution
Excerpt: Well, there's a misconception about Barack Obama as a former constitutional law professor. First of all, there are plenty of professors who are "legal relativists." They tend to view legal principles as relative to whatever they're trying to achieve. I would certainly put President Obama in the relativist category.

Krauthammer on Michelle Obama’s ‘brilliant’ speech: ‘I didn’t buy a line of it. By Jeff Poor
Excerpt: Krauthammer went on to say that despite of his high marks for the performance, the substance was not believable. “Looking at the scene, looking at how he’s conducted himself if the presidency and particularly campaign, with ruthlessness and determination and drive it’s not quite a plausible story,” Krauthammer said. “I’m sure in the arena it was a plausible story. I saw the tears but I’m afraid, I thought it’s a great speech but I didn’t buy a line of it.”

Fact Check: First Lady's False Fairy Tale of Struggle. By Joel B. Pollak
Excerpt: Her fairy tale--however well-delivered--was one great, big, colorful lie. Both Michelle Robinson and Barack Obama began their adult lives with a leg up on the rest of America. They were accepted to Ivy League schools despite undistinguished credentials, and both attended Harvard Law School.

Bracken: When The Music Stops – How America’s Cities May Explode In Violence
Excerpt: We have seen them all before, and we shall see them all again as history rhymes along regardless of the century or the generation of humankind nominally in control of events. But the next time we are visited by widespread, large-scale urban riots, a dangerous new escalation may be triggered by a new vulnerability: It’s estimated that the average American home has less than two weeks of food on hand. In poor minority areas, it may be much less.

DNC's 'Republican' Firefighter Is Union Spokesman
Excerpt: Eager to show support for the little guys, the teachers, the coal miners, and the firefighters, the DNC had Doug Stern, Cincinnati firefighter, speak. Doug Stern was a long-time Republican, they said. He was disillusioned by right-wing extremism, they said. ... The one big fat problem with that is that Doug Stern is a union spokesman in Cincinnati.

Fact-Checkers Ding Democrats, Too: Democrats fudge figures, misrepresent Romney policies
Excerpt: Fact-checkers raked Republicans over the coals during their convention, but Democrats haven't exactly been squeaky clean, either. Here are some of the distortions spotted on night one of the convention: (Yep, it's the same dingy game everybody plays. I don't like it from anyone, no matter which Party is doing it. And the sad thing is that while anyone can check all the assorted claims made in speeches and ads, and find all the mistakes, omissions, exaggerations, and falsehoods, very few people do. Instead the ones who like Mr. Obama believe all the stuff from his side and say the GOP stuff is all crap, while the other side believes all their stuff and say all the Obama stuff is crap. I'd love to see a really comprehensive listing of every single bad claim or ad from each side, and see if one is any longer a list than the other, or has more egregious misinformation in it. In the end an intelligent voter can only try to look at what's gone on for the last 3.5 years and decide if Mr. Obama is liable to be able to do any better if re-elected, or if on the other hand Mr. Romney's ideas sound like he'd do a better job if given the chance. Trying to see through the smoke and mirrors of the campaigning isn't easy, but we can only try to examine as much of the reality as we can. --Del)
