Old Jarhead's Political SitRep for September 19, 2012

Your one-stop-shop for political news and opinion. Please forward to friends who need to be informed. This SitRep (Military for “Situation Report”) is created by many readers who send me items for inclusion, which I would have likely missed or skipped. And I can only spend at most three hours a night pulling stuff, plus the healthcare or economic stuff that crosses my desk at work. As always, I—and you—owe them thanks and appreciation. I post articles because I think they are of interest and will stimulate thought and discussion. Doing so doesn’t mean that I necessarily agree (or disagree) with every—or any—opinion in the posted article, or that I was able to verify the information presented, which is the responsibility of the author. I try not to post things that are false, or too far a stretch, regardless of the view point, but I don’t always succeed. As always on the Net, or in the legacy media, you must read critically and with skepticism.

Long tonight, but a LOT of great links. ~Bob

Why I fight

Comment received on “I’m Tired,” my blog’s Energizer Bunny!
I was deeply touched by your blog 'I'm tired'. I received it from my mom in my email after it had been translated to Hebrew (I am originally from Israel). I know many people are forwarding your message, but I was disappointed when I couldn't find anything on youtube.com (other than one video of a radio announcer reading your piece). I am sure you have been suggested this before, but I would like to request that you make a video of this blog and post it on youtube. I know it might spawn mixed reactions that might be unpleasant but I feel that this needs to be put out to as many people to hear and to see. Please give your words the exposure they deserve. If you are too tired to make this video, and would like that someone else will make it, please let me know. I live in Hollywood, and I know how a video like that can be successfully made. I hope you live long enough so see more people like you make a change. Sincerely, Ty Joseph

A feel-good story: Flag-burning militant chokes to death on fumes
Excerpt: One of the participants of the rally, Abdullah Ismail, passed away after he was taken to Mayo Hospital. Witnesses said he had complained of feeling unwell from the smoke from US flags burnt at the rally.

U.S. aid to Egypt stalled
Excerpt: Anti-American protests that started in Cairo and spread across the Muslim world have stalled negotiations to provide crucial U.S. economic assistance to Egypt, U.S. officials said Monday. The violent demonstrations sparked by an anti-Islam video, and Egypt’s initially clumsy response, have temporarily halted talks about a proposed $1 billion in debt relief and how to speed millions in other aid to Egypt, according to several U.S. officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the news media.

About our multibillions in foreign aid
It seems we give out literally tons of money to lots of nations that aren't really friendly to us, some of which money goes to purposes that are inimical to our interests. (Like Arab countries who use US dollars to buy more Russian military equipment and supplies like scads of missiles, which just adds to the instability and dangers of the Middle East.) We've handed out billions on billions for decades and none of it seems to really have done much for us, and not much of it seems to have done real good for the regular people of those nations. If it doesn't get used for anti-US or anti-Israel purposes, a lot of it gets spread out and disappears into the corruption of those societies.

I don't believe we can buy friendship in most cases, and when our enemies benefit from our aid, they just laugh all the way to the bank at how stupid we are. If there are programs that really benefit people, building schools, irrigation systems, sewer systems, clinics, orphanages, etc, great, we are a generous people and most of those should be supported even if everyone doesn't like us there. In Judao-Christian ethics you do good where you can, and not just to get a reward.

But at this point I am so fed up and disgusted with our utter bumbling about international aid we hand out that I am ready to go to the simple radical position of every single dollar of foreign aid has to be re-examined every year, in a debate on CNN, before it's renewed or changed in any way. And if there aren't clearly good reasons why the aid should be invested in the foreign country, it doesn't go there. I want the default to be nonrenewal, and renewal by exception.

It won't change our national budget significantly, but that's not the point for me. I just don't believe in an eternal giveaway to people who at best aren't doing a thing for us, and at worst, maintain support for some section of people who hate us and are willing and ready to do us harm if given a chance.

OK, so I have a twisted thinking pattern.....Del

White House Media Ignore Obama's Muslim Outreach Meltdown. By Neil Munro
Excerpt: Obama’s Arab-outreach policy — dubbed “A New Beginning” in 2009 – is being shredded as Islamist governments, angry populations and jihadi groups compete to demonstrate their hostility to, or distance from, Obama’s U.S. government. United States Marines are being sent to protect embassies, U.S. diplomats have been withdrawn from the region and the Beirut embassy has begun burning classified documents, according to the Associated Press. Even friendly Libyan officials publicly dismiss the White House’s claim that the deadly Sept. 11, 2012 attack in Benghazi was the result of an uproar over a low-budget YouTube video.

Armada of International Naval Power Massing in the Gulf as Israel Plans and Iran Strike. By Sean Rayment
Excerpt: Cruisers, aircraft carriers and minesweepers from 25 nations are converging on the strategically important Strait of Hormuz in an unprecedented show of force as Israel and Iran move towards the brink of war. Western leaders are convinced that Iran will retaliate to any attack by attempting to mine or blockade the shipping lane through which passes around 18 million barrels of oil every day, approximately 35 per cent of the world’s oil traded by sea. A blockade would have a catastrophic effect on the fragile economies of Britain, Europe, the United States and Japan, all of which rely heavily on oil and gas supplies from the Gulf.

Italy will represent Canadian interests in Tehran after Canada shuts down embassy in Tehran
Excerpt: Italy announced Monday it will protect Canadian interests in Iran following Ottawa’s recent severing of diplomatic relations with Tehran. ...

Breaking, Source, Shock: Obama To Apologize To Muslims For Mohammed Movie By Freeing Blind Sheikh Who Bombed World Trade Center
Dear God, if this is true, you convince them that terror and violence work. Yeah, I know the Islamic Supremacists have made great gains since their successful 9/11 terror attack convinced so many we had to try to buy them off. Still... ~Bob Excerpt: The U.S. State Department is currently in negotiations with the Egyptian government for the transfer of custody of Omar Abdel-Rahman, also known as “the Blind Sheikh,” for humanitarian and health reasons, a source close to the Obama administration told TheBlaze.

Report: Top Obama Bundlers Bag Millions In Taxpayer Money
Excerpt: An investigation by the Government Accountability Institute found that more than half of the most politically active 50 campaign bundlers for President Obama were either appointed to a presidential council, committee, board, or other White House post. Many bundlers’ businesses or relatives' businesses also received millions of dollars in taxpayer-funded federal contracts, grants, loans, or other crony perks. (Only the feeble-minded are surprised. ~Bob.)

Live prisoner's heart cut out for illegal organ trade, says witness
Excerpt: A former Kosovo rebel witness has described how he removed a prisoner's heart for the black market in organs during the 1990s conflict, Serbian state television has reported. ... The Council of Europe rapporteur Dick Marty alleged in 2010 that senior KLA commanders - including the Kosovo Prime Minister, Hashim Thaci - were involved in illegal organ trafficking. The report said organs were taken from the bodies of prisoners, many of them Serbs, held by the KLA in Albania at the time. (You remember the KLA, the oppressed Muslims Bill Clinton sent our military to help win the war. But I’m doubtful a non-surgeon could successfully harvest a heart for transplant. ~Bob.)

AstroTurf: Protesters paid to demonstrate in Egypt. By Jessica Stanton
Egyptian Prime Minister Hesham Kandil has revealed that “a number” of the thousands involved in protests near the U.S. Embassy in Cairo were getting paid to participate. Kandil made this remark on the state-run Middle East News Agency, although he pointed out that not all protestors were illegitimate. It is not known who paid the protesters or if the Egyptian government has identified any suspects.

Watchdog: Obama must punish Sebelius or Congress can impeach her. By Matthew Boyle
Excerpt: The U.S. Office of Special Counsel said last Wednesday that Sebelius violated the law when she publicly endorsed Obama’s re-election and North Carolina Lieutenant Gov. Walter Dalton’s gubernatorial primary in a multi-way race during a taxpayer-funded public event on Feb. 25, 2012. The standard penalty for violating the Hatch Act is termination. But, the White House has suggested that Obama will offer Sebelius special treatment and let her keep her job. (Won't hold my breath. ~Bob.)

Fed's Quantitative Easing Results Are Mixed, At Best
Excerpt: Even if true, the basic arithmetic is irrefutable: The Fed's tab for the QE program is now over $3 trillion. And most of that new money went to buy government debt — not to "stimulate" the private sector.

How Poor Is ‘Poor’? What does it mean to say that 46.2 million Americans live in “poverty”? By Robert Rector
Excerpt: Some 80 percent of poor adults and 96 percent of poor children were never hungry at any time during the year because they could not afford food. The average consumption of protein, vitamins, and minerals is virtually the same for poor and middle-class children and is well above recommended norms in most cases. Some 80 percent of poor households have air conditioning; nearly two-thirds have cable or satellite TV; half have a personal computer; 43 percent have Internet access; and one-third have a wide-screen plasma or LCD TV.

Worth Reading: Muslim Rage & The Last Gasp of Islamic Hate. By Ayann Hirsi Ali
Excerpt: Islam’s rage reared its ugly head again last week. The American ambassador to Libya and three of his staff members were murdered by a raging mob in Benghazi, Libya, possibly under the cover of protests against a film mocking the Muslim Prophet Muhammad. They were killed on the watch of the democratic government they helped to install. This government was either negligent or complicit in their murders. (This well known secularist Muslim has written an article for Newsweek about Islam and the rage we see so frequently now. (BTW, a fatwah has been issued by some cleric calling for the death of everyone associated with that movie trailer that so offended many Muslims. Not exactly a surprise, but again a demonstration of the mindset of the fundamentalists.) I read the reviews of the article first, and was impressed by how harsh they are, accusing the writer of just doing a "hit piece" for the notoriety it would bring her. Then I looked up the actual article and read it. What I read didn't seem to me to be a "hit piece" at all, but a thoughtful and reasoned discussion of Muslim psychology of the moment, and what is liable to occur in time. I thought it was a valuable contribution to understanding. And the harsh reviews then fall right into what the article's author describes about the response of the liberal West to the situation. I recommend the article, everyone can read it and form their own conclusions. –Del

Egypt cleric issues fatwa against 'Innocence of Muslims' cast, crew
Excerpt: A Salafist cleric in Egypt is calling for the deaths of all those involved in the making of an anti-Muslim film that has outraged the Islamic world, SITE Intelligence Group said on Monday. (This will go largely unnoticed and unremarked. But imagine if a Christian pastor in a foreign country had called for the murder of the “artist” who created “Piss Christ.” ~Bob.)

U.S. diplomats in Beirut burning classified material
Excerpt: Diplomats at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut have started to destroy classified material as a security precaution amid anti-American protests in Lebanon and elsewhere in the Middle East and North Africa. (Expecting a visit from members of the Religion of Peace, I guess. ~Bob.)

Shocking News! Trade with China Supports U.S. Jobs
Excerpt: The presidential debate yesterday moved to trade with China, with the usual rhetorical suspects—including "outsourcing" and the "trade deficit"—taking center stage. President Obama announced that his Administration had filed a complaint against China with the World Trade Organization. But a groundbreaking new report from Heritage proves that importing goods from China supports American jobs here at home, completely turning political wisdom on its head. Importing clothes and toys from China helps to support more than half a million American jobs, the report reveals—in stark contrast to claims that trade with China costs jobs.

Sex slavery blossoms with legal prostitution
Sex slavery is rampant in the US and Europe and is the result of one of those libertarian ideas, namely, that if you legalize something, it diminishes. Like drugs. The Cato study of the Portuguese government's experiment reads like an advertisement for legalization. The experiment was a "resounding success" they claimed. Only a group of Portuguese doctors who specialized in drug abuse published their own findings, which contradicted the whole thing. So whom do you believe? A bunch of socialist politicians who nearly bankrupted their nation or a group of physicians who are closest to the problem? Hmmm. Let me think about that. The Amish supposedly have a saying "ve get too old kvik and too late schmart." Our thanks to Julio Severo for this alert (Julio translated the article into Portuguese for his site): --Don Hank

Coalition Sharply Reduces Joint Operations With Afghan Troops
Excerpt: After years of tightly intertwining its forces with Afghan troops, the American-led military coalition has sharply curtailed ground-level operations with the Afghan Army and police forces, potentially undercutting the training mission that is the heart of the Western exit strategy.

True, That
"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what," Romney says in one clip. "There are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent on government, who believe that, that they are victims, who believe that government has the responsibility to care for them. Who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing." –Mitt Romney

Tweet from @gabrielmalor
Did I understand right? When Obama says that Americans aren't paying their fair share, it's cool. But when Romney says it, it's not cool?

Liberals Aghast That Romney Thinks They’re Dependent on Government
Excerpt: We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men, women and people of other gender identifications are considered equal, though some are more equal than others; that they are endowed by their government with certain inalienable rights, subject to vote, legislative session or executive order, one coupon per family; that among these are life if you survive the womb, liberty with reasonable restrictions as defined by committee, and the pursuit of whatever floats your boat.

No demonstration before attack on US Consulate, source says
Excerpt: An intelligence source on the ground in Libya told Fox News that there was no demonstration outside the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi prior to last week's attack -- challenging the Obama administration's claims that the assault grew out of a "spontaneous" protest against an anti-Islam film. "There was no protest and the attacks were not spontaneous," the source said, adding the attack "was planned and had nothing to do with the movie."

Are Our Elected American Representatives leading us to another "Operation Frequent Wind"?
Excerpt: In the past few days and in the midst of the murderous jubilation expressed by the Muslim communities throughout the Middle East for their new found Arab "Sprung" freedom, insider attacks number 37 and 38 reaped the religion of peace and our government, six more ISAF and American dead, two British Soldiers killed in an attack on Camp Bastion and some $150,000,000.00 worth of equipment including six Harriers destroyed and two severely damaged. Not a bad five day's work for Allah's "peaceful worshippers"!

The reign of imagination: Did U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens understand why he and his fellow Americans were being murdered? By Caroline B. Glick
Excerpt: But did he understand the forces he was unleashing? Stevens arrived in Benghazi at an early phase of U.S. involvement in the rebellion against Gaddafi, a former U.S. foe who had been neutered since 2004. But even then it was clear that the rebels with whom he worked included jihadist fighters associated with al-Qaida. Their significance became obvious when just after the regime fell in November 2011, rebel forces foisted the flag of al-Qaida over the courthouse in Benghazi.

Worth Reading: Can Republicans Talk? By Thomas Sowell
Excerpt: I have not heard any Republican official or candidate even try to answer a standard claim of the Democrats, that "deregulation" is the reason the housing market went haywire and brought down the economy. Therefore, according to the Democrats, Republicans who want to restore a free market are just trying to "go back to the same policies that got us into this mess in the first place."

The 25 Most Obnoxious Quotes From Barack Obama. By John Hawkins

Young Conservatives: The Hushed Future. By Madeleine McAulay
Excerpt: As a young conservative, there is nothing more frustrating than to turn on a major news network and hear adult, political pundits ramble about what it is the youth want in this country. These pundits sit there on television making broad based assumptions about the youth, without ever asking young conservatives what their opinions are on political issues of the day. (She’s 16. I follow her on Twitter, when I have time. ~Bob.)

Interview: Mark Steyn on After America, One Year Later. By Ed Driscoll
Excerpt: Last year, as the month of August began, I received a copy of Mark Steyn’s After America from his publicist on Wednesday, the Dow Jones dropped 512 points on Thursday, and S&P shorted America’s credit rating on Friday. Mark’s crack PR team earned their keep once again this year, staging riots across the Middle East, a feckless “Quantitative Easing” program by the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, and a First Amendment-trampling POTUS, all in the past week, as a sort of extended infomercial to promote the paperback edition of the book, which is now out today.

The Reagan Diaries
Excerpt: Last night I went on Amazon, bought and downloaded The Reagan Diaries to my Kindle E-Reader. I started reading and literally couldn't put it down. Doug Brinkley, a liberal historian, edited the diaries and even he was full of praise for this compilation of event documentation during Ronald Reagan's presidency. Brinkley says only four Presidents have ever been so faithful in recording the daily experiences of their time in the White House.

Obama’s Foreign Policy Fraud Has Come Undone. By Daniel Greenfield
Excerpt: The media successfully covered for Obama’s retreat from Iraq, and the weekly Al Qaeda car bombings and rush to civil war no longer make the news. The media have also done their best to cover for Obama’s disaster in Afghanistan which has cost thousands of American lives while completely failing to defeat the Taliban. Obama had hoped to cover up his defeat in Afghanistan by cutting a deal with the “moderate” Taliban, but the Taliban, moderate or extreme, refused to help him cover his ass.

Europe’s Multicultural Nightmare. By Stephen Brown
Excerpt: The beautiful, rosy multicultural paradise Europe’s leftists promised in the 1960s and ’70s manifested itself brilliantly again recently at a Kurdish festival in Mannheim, a German city in the south-western state of Baden-Wurttemberg. Almost as soon as the festival began, German police were set upon by hundreds of young Kurds who were encouraged “with words and applause” by thousands of others. When the shocking, hours-long savagery ended, eighty policemen were injured, one seriously, while “more than a dozen vehicles were destroyed” before order could be restored. (We are fast losing civilization. ~Bob.)

Academic Dishonesty. By Walter Williams
Excerpt: Many of the nation’s colleges and universities have become cesspools of indoctrination, intolerance, academic dishonesty and an “enlightened” form of racism. This is a decades-old trend. In a 1991 speech, Yale President Benno Schmidt warned: “The most serious problems of freedom of expression in our society today exist on our campuses. The assumption seems to be that the purpose of education is to induce correct opinion rather than to search for wisdom and to liberate the mind.”

If Obama Thinks He Inherited a Mess Four Years Ago. By Bernard Goldberg
Excerpt: I was part of a political panel over the weekend on the upcoming election. The first question was this: Given the weak economy, given the large number of Americans who can’t find a job, and given that most Americans think the country is on the wrong track, why isn’t Mitt Romney way out ahead?

CNN Hides Background of Prominent Religious Critic Under Siege. By Ed Driscoll http://pjmedia.com/eddriscoll/2012/09/17/cnn-hides-background-of-religious-critic/
Excerpt: Oh sorry, that was back in May of 2008, when CNN built “the Wright-Free Zone” to protect Obama’s presidential bid when he tossed Rev. Wright under the bus. The rest of the world doesn’t get that kind of helpful service from Time-Warner-HBO. “CNN Releases Photo, Personal Info Of Filmmaker,” Breitbart.com’s Larry O’Connor notes today, also noting that Nakoula Basseley Nakoula took great effort to conceal his identity when being hauled away by police this weekend: CNN acknowledged this fact and then went on to show a picture of Nikoula as well as reveal information that they boastfully said they “dug up” on the filmmaker.

Report: Another 1,500 pages of regulations added last week. By Michael Bastasch
Excerpt: Last week, 1,571 new pages of regulations were published in the 2012 Federal Register, bringing the total for this year to more than 55,300 pages, according to the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI). In those pages, 76 new final rules were approved, up from 51 final rules during the shortened Labor Day holiday week. That figure is equivalent to a new regulation being published every 2 hours and 13 minutes, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

Daily Presidential Tracking Poll
Excerpt: The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows Mitt Romney attracting support from 47% of voters nationwide, while President Obama earns 45% of the vote. Four percent (4%) prefer some other candidate, and three percent (3%) are undecided. See daily tracking history. When “leaners” are included, the race is tied with both Obama and Romney at 48%. Leaners are those who are initially uncommitted to the two leading candidates but lean towards one of them when asked a follow-up question.

Gallup poll: Obama’s convention bump gone, lead down to 1 point

How to Commit Voter Fraud in Ohio: The Buckeye State: where a utility bill counts as acceptable ID. By Paula Bolyard
Excerpt: As a precinct election official, I have seen exceptionally professional behavior by my fellow poll workers and county board of election officials. However, they are at the mercy of loose state election laws. Though Ohio has a Republican governor and legislature, they backed down on their efforts to pass a voter ID law and refused to reform the state’s no-fault absentee voting rules, making the commission of voter fraud a relatively simple matter.

Community college math teacher pulled from classroom after soliciting votes for Obama. By Jennifer White
Excerpt: A student at Brevard Community College in Melbourne, Florida said last week that a math professor distributed bookmarks in class asking students to “pledge that I will vote for President Obama and Democrats up and down the ticket.” Assistant Professor Sharon Sweet allegedly handed out bookmarks advertising the website gottavote.org, an online product of Obama For America, the president’s re-election campaign organization. The college has granted her a leave of absence while an investigation proceeds.

Source: DOJ’s Gallup whistle-blower made bizarre work requests, said he was ‘devout Marxist.’ By Matthew Boyle
Excerpt: The whistle-blower whose allegations form the basis for a Department of Justice lawsuit against the Gallup polling company made bizarre requests at work, made coworkers nervous and said he was a “devout Marxist,” a senior Gallup official told The Daily Caller….According to the Gallup official, Lindley worked at the polling firm from Feb. 25, 2008 until July 24, 2009. Before working at Gallup, Lindley was a field organizer in Council Bluffs, Iowa, for then-Sen. Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign.

Emails reveal Justice Dept. regularly enlists Media Matters to spin press. By Matthew Boyle
Excerpt: Internal Department of Justice emails obtained by The Daily Caller show Attorney General Eric Holder’s communications staff has collaborated with the left-wing advocacy group Media Matters for America in an attempt to quell news stories about scandals plaguing Holder and America’s top law enforcement agency. Dozens of pages of emails between DOJ Office of Public Affairs Director Tracy Schmaler and Media Matters staffers show Schmaler, Holder’s top press defender, working with Media Matters to attack reporters covering DOJ scandals. TheDC obtained the emails through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Excerpt: Reporters covering the White House don’t seem to have many questions about Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, who was last week found in violation of federal law against engaging in political activity while on the job. A review of transcripts by The Daily Caller indicate that no questions have been asked by the reporters who cover the president about Sebelius during official White House briefings or gaggles since Sept. 12, when the U.S. Office of Special Counsel said in a report that the cabinet secretary violated the Hatch Act earlier this year. It’s still up to President Obama whether Sebelius should keep her job or face some sort of punishment after being found in violation of the Hatch Act. (Why, I’m shocked. Shocked, I say, at their lack of journalistic integrity. I crack me up. ~Bob.)

CAIR Rep: Violence Shows It's America That Needs to Change
Anti-American violence throughout the Muslim world, ostensibly over a cheap Internet film denigrating the Muslim prophet Muhammad, may be misguided, but it's a result of "the lack of dignity, the lack of respect that they're being shown." And it's up to America to change policies to calm things. That's the message a Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) official brought to a television interview Sunday.

Excerpt: For more than a year, PJ Media has been reporting on the corrupt press shop inside the Department of Justice. The unit is headed by Press Harpy Tracy Schmaler. …. Today, Matthew Boyle blows the lid off of the relationship between the United States Department of Justice press shop and the leftist activists at Media Matters, particularly flying monkey Matt Gertz.

Egypt To Try Seven Christians, US Pastor Over Prophet Film
Excerpt: Egypt's general prosecutor issued arrest warrants Tuesday for seven Egyptian Coptic Christians and a Florida-based American pastor and referred them to trial on charges linked to an anti-Islam film that has sparked riots across the Muslim world. The case is largely symbolic since the seven men and one woman are believed to be outside of Egypt and unlikely to travel to the country to face the charges. (Guess they won’t be visiting the pyramids. No one else with a brain will either. ~Bob.)

NBC News: Obama Admin Lying About Security At Libyan Consulate
