Political Digest for August 21, 2012

The Old Jarhead Blog: Bringing you news and information the MSM is too busy covering American Idol, celebrity affairs and sensational missing person cases to cover. Please forward to friends who need to be informed.

I post articles because I think they are of interest. Doing so doesn’t mean that I necessarily agree (or disagree) with every—or any—opinion in the posted article, or that I was able to verify the information present, which is the responsibility of the author. In some cases I post things sent to me by readers I might not have posted on my own, to get ideas circulating.

Worth Reading: Like Water for Climate. By Bjørn Lomborg
Excerpt: Consider Paul Krugman, writing breathlessly in The New York Times about the “rising incidence of extreme events” and how “large-scale damage from climate change is … happening now.” He claims that global warming caused the current drought in America’s Midwest, and that supposedly record-high corn prices could cause a global food crisis. But the United Nations climate panel’s latest assessment tells us precisely the opposite: for “North America, there is medium confidence that there has been an overall slight tendency toward less dryness (wetting trend with more soil moisture and runoff).”

Profits on Carbon Credits Drive Output of a Harmful Gas
Excerpt: They quickly figured out that they could earn one carbon credit by eliminating one ton of carbon dioxide, but could earn more than 11,000 credits by simply destroying a ton of an obscure waste gas normally released in the manufacturing of a widely used coolant gas. That is because that byproduct has a huge global warming effect. The credits could be sold on international markets, earning tens of millions of dollars a year.

Economic recovery is weakest since World War II
“Our (economic) plan worked!” – Barack Obama. Excerpt: The recession that ended three years ago this summer has been followed by the feeblest economic recovery since the Great Depression. … The ugliness goes well beyond unemployment, which at 8.3 percent is the highest this long after a recession ended.

Hard to believe. But if it's close in Crook County, it's over. Should have a 10% bump here from the dead and other illegal “voters” without IDs. ~Bob. Excerpt: President Barack Obama could lose his home state of Illinois in November, a new poll shows. A poll conducted by Illinois-based pollster and political strategist Michael McKeon found Obama leading Republican Mitt Romney by 49 percent to 37 percent in Cook County, the home of Chicago. That puts him ahead by a far thinner margin than expected in a county he should be winning handsomely.

Quiz: Who said it? Al Gore or the Unabomber?
Panned by the Left, but fun. ~Bob.

In Syria, group suspected of al-Qaeda links gaining prominence in war to topple Assad
Excerpt: A shadowy jihadist organization that first surfaced on the Internet to assert responsibility for suicide bombings in Aleppo and Damascus has stepped out of the shadows and onto the front lines of the war for Syria’s cities. Here in Aleppo, the al-Nusra Front for the Protection of the People of the Levant, widely known as the Jabhat al-Nusra, is fielding scores of fighters, some of them foreigners, in the battle for control of Syria’s commercial capital, a key prize in the bitter war of attrition being waged across the country. (The side the Obama Administration is supporting! ~Bob.)

The Border Conspiracy: Exclusive Videos Show How One Texas County Fakes Crime Statistics to Make the Border Look Safe
Excerpt: Hidalgo County elected Democrat Guadalupe “Lupe” Treviño sheriff in 2004 and then re-elected him in 2008, and this spring he reportedly spent more than a half a million dollars to clinch the Democratic nomination for a third term as the county’s sheriff. In this heavily Democratic county, Treviño is a cinch to win that third term.

Excerpt: A major U.S. environmental disaster strikes. As Coast Guard and other heroes struggle to contain the unprecedented damage, a different scene unfolds in a dimly lit conference room in Washington. A small group of high-ranking political hacks and overzealous ideologues see an opportunity to manipulate the situation to advance their agenda. They doctor a key report on the disaster by experts in order to justify shutting down all exploration and new production. They explain the sweeping decision as something sound science requires. Several weeks later, members of Congress and a few in the media dig deeper into the alleged science behind bringing an entire industry to a screeching halt. That’s when the cover-up begins.

Excerpt: In 2008, journalists loved to report on candidate Obama drawing record crowds. Today? Well, insert obligatory Spinal Tap “Selective” reference here: “Obama camp –

It's the Circumstances, Stupid: How the Republican ticket can suit the moment and use Clark Kent -- er, Paul Ryan. By Peggy Noonan
Excerpt: Ryan is associated with the word cutting. Republicans will have to make people believe the word to associate with him is "saving," that the Romney-Ryan ticket wants to save entitlement programs that aren't sustainable, that will in time collapse unless we impose ruinous taxes or continue with ruinous deficits.

Under Obamacare, Medicare Double Taxation Begins in 2013. By Matt Cover
Excerpt: A provision of President Obama’s health care law imposes a second Medicare tax on investment income for Americans classified as wealthy, effectively raising taxes on investment income and taxing investors twice. The provision, a little-known part of ObamaCare, levies a 3.8 percent Medicare tax on investment income for couples making more than $250,000 or individuals making more than $200,000 a year. The tax is scheduled to go into effect on January 1, 2013. (This will only hit me indirectly, as these people have fewer dollars to spend in the private economy or bank, thus reducing economic activity. That will, of course, be George Bush’s fault. ~Bob.)

All Planned Parenthood Charges Dropped After Sebelius Document Shredding. By Steven Ertelt
Excerpt: All of the charges against a Planned Parenthood abortion business have been dropped after one of the most politically biased cases pro-life groups say they can remember. The case was embroiled in controversy after it was found documents critical to it were destroyed during the administration of former Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.

Light My Fire: Gov’t Subsidized Automaker Recalls Hybrid Model Over Safety Concerns
Excerpt: Electric-car maker Fisker Automotive is recalling all of its $100,000 Karma sports sedans to fix cooling fans that can catch fire. The recall comes after Fisker and a private fire investigation firm finished probing an Aug. 10 fire in a Karma in Woodside, Calif. (All those tax dollars Obama is burning through creates too much heat. ~Bob.)

Worth Reading: An Interesting take--DG
I'm usually not much for speeches, political rhetoric and the like, especially pronouncements that are not two minutes long and can't get it said in that amount of time, but the following really impressed me. I didn't consider the talk to be partisan.  The clarity with which the speaker analyzes our nation's interests is sharp and thoughtful (and the quotes are wonderful). I think even I would have listened without fidgeting! Please read the piece before noting who gave it. –DG. Excerpt: The unsustainable trajectory of government spending is accelerating the nation toward the most predictable economic crisis in American history. Years of ignoring the real drivers of our debt have left us with a profound structural problem. In the coming years, our debt is projected to grow to more than three times the size of our entire economy. This trajectory is catastrophic. By the end of the decade, we will be spending 20 percent of our tax revenue simply paying interest on the debt – and that’s according to optimistic projections.

63% Oppose Driver’s Licenses, Public Benefits for Illegal Immigrants Who Get Work Permits
Excerpt: Most voters still agree with President Obama’s new policy allowing some young illegal immigrants to get legal work permits, but they strongly oppose also making these young people eligible for driver’s licenses or taxpayer-funded benefits. Seventy-three percent (73%) of Likely U.S. Voters believe someone brought to this country illegally when he or she was under 16 years old who has no criminal record, has graduated from high school or served in the military should be allowed to apply for a legal work permit.

We Did Build it’: Small Business Owner Taunts Obama Motorcade
Excerpt: This New Hampshire businessman set up signage outside his business to let Mr. Obama know that in America, the free market still works and small businessmen aren’t obligated to grovel on bended knee to thank the federal government for allowing them to exist.

Contract Law And Civil Society
Excerpt: Civilization finally came to the human family when the honoring of contract law was finally codified. The English Magna Carta was the first revered document that finally advanced both capitalism and the rule of law. After Contract Law was mutually agreed upon by the British Monarchy and the British commoner, guaranteeing the sanctity of personal property, Britain became the supreme world power. When our founding fathers laid out the principles for governing the newly independent United States, the concept of honoring Contract Law was deemed essential, and failing to do so would cause chaos. By honoring all manner of contract the U.S. built the most successful capitalist society in the history of the world. Then, in the first decade of the 21st Century America elected a socialist who reviles the very concept of contract law, and who has done everything to destroy Contract Law during every day of his Presidency.

Yemen: Islamophobes murder seven in mosque during Eid prayers -- no, wait...
Excerpt: If the murderer had actually been a non-Muslim, there would have been a fierce international outcry over this. But he wasn't, and so there is no notice of this at all. Even while insisting that Islam is a Religion of Peace, the mainstream media acts as if it knows better by ignoring stories like this -- as if to take for granted that Islam teaches violence and that Muslims are going to act upon those teachings.

Bomb in Russian Caucasus kills six police
Excerpt: Russia is fighting a simmering Islamist insurgency in the Caucasus, mostly in Dagestan and Ingushetia, which see regular attacks that officials blame on militants seeking to establish an Islamic state across the Russian Caucasus.

Blacks pummel white guy for 'fun of it.' By Chuck Ross
Excerpt: Six teens arrested recently in the Cincinnati suburb of North College Hill for beating 45-year-old Pat Mahaney reportedly told police they ambushed the man because they were bored. Mahaney, who was walking to his mother’s home when he was blindsided by the group of teens and left unconscious, spent four days in intensive care. (Thank God it wasn’t white teens beating a black guy—that would have been racial violence, requiring Obama, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, the NBPP [to offer a reward] and the media to get involved on a large scale. ~Bob.)

After Weekend Of Bashing, Obama Meets WH Press Corps: ‘Jay Tells Me That You Guys Have Been Missing Me.’
Excerpt: President Barack Obama made a surprise appearance at the White House press briefing today, after growing criticism that he had been avoiding reporters. He used the occasion to criticize the GOP's candidate for U.S. Senate in Missouri, to borrow a line from Harry Reid about Mitt Romney's father, and to claim that presidents' lives should be an "open book," among other statements of varied interest. (Sorry, pot calling the kettle black….US should have seen this guy’s records before he was allowed to be nominated…. Spent millions blocking attempts to find them. So what is HE hiding? –Barb. Let’s open the book on his College Records for starters. ~Bob.)

Former union boss at Occupy event: Our goal is to ‘overthrow the capitalist system and build communism’ [VIDEO] By Matthew Boyle
Former Amalgamated Transit Union local 689 president Mike Golash, now an “Occupy” movement organizer, was caught on tape Sunday revealing his political goals: overthrowing capitalism in the United States and instituting a communist government. “Progressive labor is a revolutionary communist organization,” Golash said during an Occupy DC “People’s Assembly” on August 19. “Its objective,” he added, “is to make revolution in the United States, overthrow the capitalist system and build communism.” (That way, the working people can live as well as they do in Cuba, or did in East Germany or the USSR. ~Bob.)

Book: Obamacare law designed to unionize 21 million health care workers. By David Martosko
Excerpt: In a book set for publication Tuesday, a politics and government professor at The Citadel claims President Obama’s 2009 health care reform law was, in part, a union-driven effort to organize 21 million health care workers. In ”Shadowbosses: Government Unions Control America and Rob Taxpayers Blind,” Mallory Factor describes a December 9, 2008 memo from Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Healthcare president Dennis Rivera to the Obama-Biden transition team. That memo outlined a legislative proposal calling for “increasing the capacity of the health care workforce” as part of a larger health care reform initiative.

Disney’s ‘Odd Life of Timothy Green’ leaves kids paralyzed with fear [VIDEO]. By Taylor Bigler
Excerpt: The most recent feel good movie – cum- horror film is, apparently, “The Odd Life of Timothy Green.” The G-rated film is about a married couple that struggles to have children of their own, until one day a little boy sprouts from their backyard. “Odd Life of Timothy Green’s” tagline is, “Once you meet him you’ll never be the same.” This must be true — just ask these two little boys who left the movie theater paralyzed with fear. (Storal to the morey—Don’t look forward to any positive family film experiences from Hollywood. Pure emotional manipulation. Why I do not go see any films any more and am considering disconnecting the TV. –Barb.)
