Some great news, information and graphics today--don't miss

Update

Sunday was a lovely, sunny, crisp fall day in Madison. The autumn foliage is about peak, some trees still turning, some at peak and some just past. I took this shot of our condo. I love fall--but not what comes next! ~Bob

General News and Comment

Is this the 'Wille Horton' ad of 2014?
Good 30-second ad. There's nothing wrong with negative campaigning IF it's true and relevant to the office. Voters deserve to know--and the media won't cover things like this. ~Bob.

Supreme Court clears the way for Texas voter ID law
Excerpt: The Supreme Court allowed Texas to enforce its strict voter identification laws in the upcoming midterms early Saturday morning. The decision, which came at 5 a.m., was unsigned and contained no reasoning. ... All three female Justices, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, publicly dissented from the decision.

Too Much Burden To Show ID To Vote? What About Jury Duty? By Shannon Goessling
Excerpt: Consider some of the pillars of civic duty – voting, jury duty, registering for Selective Service, participating in the Census, challenging a property tax assessment. All of these carry burdens on us to leave our homes, bring our stuff, travel to government offices, and spend time filling out documents. (If 600,000 Texans can't get Photo IDs, they can't buy guns or booze. They can't fly, drive, cash checks, buy Obamacare, get food stamps or welfare, or get into the Democrat National Convention--or the rally the NAACP held in the South to oppose Voter ID! Why isn't all that racial discrimination? --Bob)

Biggest Labor Union Throws Support Behind "Independent" Greg Orman. By Kevin Glass
Excerpt: This week the AFL-CIO threw its considerable weight behind Democrat-turned-independent Greg Orman in his bid for U.S. Senate in Kansas. This came on the heels of a debate that was all about defining who Greg Orman really is:

Obama’s going through a presidential phase that won’t last past mid-November. By Christine O’Donnell
Excerpt: This week, President Obama decided to cancel campaign appearances on both Wednesday and Thursday so that he could huddle in the House and monitor the emerging Ebola crisis. In other words, the president has finally decided to act presidential and, surprise, surprise, it’s right before next month’s mid-term elections

New York Times Blockbuster Report – Bush Didn’t Lie, WMD’s Found All Over Iraq!!!
Excerpt: It boggles the mind at how openly fickle, irresponsible and biased our American media can be. A recent study undertaken by a citizen journalist proved that the New York Times is an echo chamber… yet even this echo chamber can produce honest journalism from time to time. An example of that is their recent report on the discovery of caches of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD’s) by American troops across Iraq in the years after we initiated...

Accountability for VA executives proving elusive. By Pete Hegseth
Excerpt: Just six months ago, Americans were outraged by revelations of a widespread patient scheduling scandal in U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs facilities across the nation — a shameful story of secret wait lists, calculated executive greed and veterans dying while awaiting care from a dysfunctional bureaucracy. That scandal set the stage for the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act, a serious set of reforms passed by Congress this summer and signed into law by the president. Along with the appointment of a new VA secretary, it appeared the VA was on a positive path toward change. But now that the initial furor has subsided, the question remains: Is the VA really reforming itself? For veterans, their families and their advocates, there’s reason to be very wary of the department’s promises. (The levels of protection that senior government employees have in various ways, including changing jobs to alternate agencies when things go sour at one for them, and the near-impossibility of really holding people responsible for incompetence or actual corruption, are an affront to every taxpayer. And what's gone on at some VA hospitals is triply offensive to vets. Congress seemed to start on a road to doing something at long last, but now we still have to wonder if it will really go anywhere. --Del. I have found the care-providers in Madison to be superb and the administration here listens to vets--not that, like any large organization, there are not glitches. The problem was the administrators in certain facilities. The system meant that they could get more money by lying. If you create perverse incentives, you get perverse results. And Harry Reid has blocked a bi-partisan House-passed bill that would let the VA fire incompetent employees. Remember in November when you vote for Senator. ~Bob)

The Nine Words Army Veteran Said to Knife-Wielding Thug Who Threatened Him and His Girlfriend — He Really Should’ve Listened. By Jason Howerton
Excerpt: Firstly, his would-be “victim,” William Lawler, 38, is an Army veteran who retired as a lieutenant after serving for over a decade. That’s strike one. Secondly, he’s a longtime firearms instructor with a license to carry a concealed 9mm Glock. That’s strike two. However, the failed robber was the one who struck himself out by refusing to listen to the “half-dozen” warnings the veteran gave him. Lawler also immediately drew his firearm as soon as the man started cursing at him and his girlfriend, and that didn’t deter him either. (The vet is a nice guy. I'd have put two in his chest, then one in the head if possible. ~Bob)

Obama-Guns: Documents Confirm Fast and Furious AK-47 Used in Phoenix Gang Assault. By Katie Pavlich
Excerpt: Documents obtained through a lawsuit recently issued against the City of Phoenix by government watchdog Judicial Watch reveal a weapon from the Department of Justice's Operation Fast and Furious was used to injure two people in a 2013 gang-style assault on an apartment complex.

FBI Bogus Reporting on Mass Murders
Excerpt: As America slides further and further left, the FBI is now giving liberals statistics to bolster their demands for gun controls, and overturning the Second Amendment. How positively Orwellian.

In Colorado, overheated rhetoric from ‘Mark Uterus. By George F. Will
Excerpt: One of the wonders of this political moment is feminist contentment about the infantilization of women in the name of progressive politics. Government, encouraging academic administrations to micromanage campus sexual interactions, now assumes that, absent a script, women cannot cope. And the Democrats’ trope about the Republicans’ “war on women” clearly assumes that women are civic illiterates.

Boeing Presents . . . The Ray Gun
From forwarded email: This equipment was recently tested on the east coast under rainy and foggy conditions. It killed sixty out of sixty drones and rockets in flight. This is cool / scary / awesome / and, I'm glad it's ours!! From Del: Wow, this is really, really neat! I don't know what it costs, and it probably isn't super cheap, but this level of performance from a truck mounted unit is just impressive as hell. I figure the Israelis will be on this like white on rice, it's a perfect tool for knocking down all the incoming rockets from Gaza when those idiots start up again. And since it can take down incoming mortar shells, that's pretty great as well. They didn't mention artillery shells, but maybe they are still too fast to track and blow in time. I can see a couple of these units on every Navy ship too

Dan Rather’s Revenge and the Battle for Free Speech. By Scott Swett
Excerpt: Robert Redford will play Dan Rather in a film about the former CBS anchor’s disputed report about President George W. Bush’s National Guard service.
The film, titled Truth, will be adapted from the memoir Truth And Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power by former CBS producer Mary Mapes, said the production company, Mythology Entertainment. Cate Blanchett is signed on to play Mapes. ... If you followed the 2004 presidential campaign, you probably recall the “disputed” 60 Minutes report claiming that George W. Bush shirked his duties and failed to follow orders as a young Texas Air National Guard officer. The segment was discredited when the “military memos” on which it was based were exposed online as forgeries. CBS News received a well-deserved black eye, and long-time anchor Dan Rather, producer Mary Mapes and several others lost their jobs. This is an excellent article, exposing the incredible duplicity and arrogant bias of two news people in particular and the whole system behind them, including the Hollywood uber-Liberal establishment. They actually want to present the actions of Rather and his editor, which amounted to and were clearly exposed as total trash "advocacy journalism", as the good guys speaking truth to power. Who then, it seems, were crushed by some Far Right cabal, the kind of people who are immoral rats quashing the righteous. There are days when I really, really feel like we've all fallen through the Looking Glass and the big White Rabbit is bouncing past us while we can hear in the background the Queen crying "Off with their Heads!". The craziness where Black will become White, Right will become Wrong, and the Lie becomes the Truth seems to be going on all around us, with academia and the media riding the wave with broad smiles on their faces. Will we ever see common sense, devotion to the simple truth, and appreciation of our real role in history, return to the nation? Good Lord, I hope so, and pray for it nightly. --Del. Hollywood keeps making liberal movies, and no one sees them except the True Believers of the Progressive Church. Likely the only people who will see this one are those who believe the dumb George Bush planned, executed and hid 911. And that the moon landing was faked. ~Bob.)

A bit more about Mr. Turse
Author of "Kill Anything That Moves", the super hatchet piece on Vietnam vets, this guy has been around for a while. All the antiwar people love him to pieces and his book made the best-seller list (God help us!) and profs use it in courses, but people should know where he's coming from. And of course they should check out the total trashing of his book by some real researchers (one a vet, the other a CA professor) https://cross-currents.berkeley.edu/e-journal/issue-12/zinoman-and-kulik. Where do these people come from? Answer: at least partially from the segment of academia that despises the very society that provides them with a privileged, affluent lifestyle. Strange, isn't it? Se below. --Del

Nick Turse is a dedicated leftist who praised the Columbine shooters:
http://bigcarnival.blogspot.com/2006/08/who-is-nick-turse-author-of-l.html
Excerpt: In a truly bizarre article about the massacre at Columbine High School, Turse idealized troubled teenage shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, portraying them as modern-day radicals. No matter that seven years ago, they murdered 12 fellow students, a teacher, and wounded 24 others – before committing suicide. Americans were horrified, but not Turse. He argued that the teenagers had “good reason” for “fighting the American educational system and, by extension, the so-called American way of life.” His article, "New Morning, Changing Weather: Radical Youth of the Millennial Age,” was published in the winter 2000 issue of the online academic journal 49th Parallel.

Ezra Klein totally whiffed on affirmative consent: "Yes means yes" laws go way overboard in assessing the scope of colleges' sexual assault problems and in punishing suspected offenders. By Shikha Dalmia
Excerpt: Liberal backers of feminists seem to be trading their long-cherished principle that the "ends don't justify the means" for the battle cry of "by any means necessary." How else to interpret the unabashed support that Ezra Klein, one of the country's smartest and most influential young liberals, recently extended to affirmative consent (or "yes means yes") laws that are proliferating across American campuses to deal with an alleged rape epidemic?
To his credit, Klein unflinchingly and rightly acknowledges that California's law constitutes a draconian assault on the due process rights of men whom it would regard as guilty until proven otherwise, vastly increasing the prospects of false convictions.

Tennant Avoids Saying Obama's Name When Asked Who She Voted For
Excerpt: When asked by a member of the Charleston Daily Mail Editorial Board who they voted for in the last election, Tennant attempted to avoid saying Obama's name by responding that she voted for the Democrat party.

Here are the four stages from the @BarackObama School of Crisis Management.
Stage 1 of Obama Crisis Management: Don’t worry, I got this.
Stage 2 of Obama Crisis Management: I'm so mad.
Stage 3 of Obama Crisis Management: More money will fix it.
Stage 4 of Obama Crisis Management: Republicans are obstructing.
Stage 5 of Obama Crisis Management: "Hey, when is my tee-time?"

Excerpt: The U.S. Supreme Court grappled with those questions on Tuesday when it heard oral argument in North Carolina Board of Dental Examiners v. Federal Trade Commission, a case arising from that board's efforts to prevent non-dentists from offering teeth-whitening services. Because six of the board's eight members are licensed practicing dentists with a direct financial stake in restricting entry to the teeth-whitening market, a lower court deemed the board's anticompetitive conduct to be illegal under federal law. ... Scalia should give the matter more thought. Better yet, he should devote careful attention to a friend of the court brief submitted in this case on behalf of 45 leading economists who urge the Supreme Court to take seriously the threat posed by occupational licensing abuse. "In the real world," the brief details, "occupational licensing boards routinely use government power to promote the private financial interests of their own members and licensees, rather than to promote any legitimate government interests."

Bill Ayers to University Students: America’s ‘Game Is Over’ and ‘Another World’ Is Coming. By Erica Ritz
Excerpt: Bill Ayers spoke at the University of Oregon last week on the subject of teaching and organizing for “social justice.” His speech was not free of the radical sentiments he is well-known for espousing (especially in the company of America’s youth). Case in point: he spoke of the end of America, a new world, and what our role ought to be in all of it. (The Terrorist Obama knew only as "a guy in the neighborhood," except for the fund raiser he held in the guy's living room. ~Bob)

Ebola guidance for healthcare workers from the GA. Department of Health

Excerpt: Judicial Watch has learned that the Obama administration is actively formulating plans to admit Ebola-infected non-U.S. citizens into the United States for treatment. Specifically, the goal of the administration is to bring Ebola patients into the United States for treatment within the first days of diagnosis.... The source is concerned that the proposal is illegal; endangers the public health and welfare; and should require the approval of Congress.

Excerpt: What a shock: faced with a crisis that could demolish the Democrats in the coming midterm elections and permanently cripple his post-election plans to continue “fundamental transformation,” President Obama has done the only thing he knows how to do — seek a political solution to get him past Nov. 4, in the hopes that he can fool the American public one last time. The announcement of Ron Klain as the new Ebola “czar” checks all the boxes: Harvard Law, longtime Democrat party op, veteran of the Clinton, Al Gore and John Kerry campaigns. .... The reality is that we have a nation of unscrupulous lawyers, amoral apparatchiks and political hacks whose only area of expertise is manipulating the electoral and governmental systems and getting rich by doing so.

Excerpt: Marine Corps General John F. Kelly talked about Ebola at the National Defense University two weeks ago and mused about what would happen if Ebola reached Haiti or Central America, which have relatively easy access to America. “If it breaks out, it’s literally ‘Katie bar the door,’ and there will be mass migration into the United States,” Kelly said. “They will run away from Ebola, or if they suspect they are infected, they will try to get to the United States for treatment.” (Kelly is a solid guy. Lost a son in Afghanistan, leading Marines. ~Bob)

Excerpt: Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.), one of the doctors serving in Congress, called Obama’s pick an “unserious gesture at an incredibly serious moment.” “That the president chose a political operative rather than a healthcare expert to head up his administration’s response to an outbreak of a deadly disease says a lot – and nothing positive – about the White House’s line of thinking,” Price said. “The American people are losing what little, if any, confidence they had left in President Obama’s ability to tackle the myriad challenges facing our nation.” (I've met Price, orthopaedic surgeon and solid guy. Wish he was the GOP Senate nominee in GA. ~Bob)

Is That Obama’s Unqualified Ebola Czar in a Holiday Inn Express Commercial?

Doctor: U.S. Army Rejected Successful Ebola Drug 2 Weeks Before Outbreak. By Paul Joseph Watson
Excerpt: A doctor claims that he developed a successful drug to combat Ebola with the U.S. Army at Ft. Detrick Maryland but that the research was inexplicably shut down two weeks before the first outbreak of the virus in West Africa. Richard C. Davis, M.D., a former flight surgeon with the U.S. Navy, told Infowars that he was leading a project to develop a drug called RC-2Beta, which according to Davis works, “at the core of our cells to enhance mitochondrial efficiency and promote gene signaling to stimulate cellular self-repair and pathogen destruction.” (This site is one of those "we expose the TRUTH!" ones, but this article definitely got my attention. If there's any truth in this, a whole lot of questions arise. And unless this doctor is a real charlatan and the data are fictional, it does seem people should be looking into this. --Del)

Obama Golfs For 4 Hours, 40 Minutes On Saturday, Then Holds Nighttime Ebola Meeting Which New Ebola Czar Skips
Excerpt: “The President on Saturday evening convened members of his national security and public health teams to update him on the response to the domestic Ebola cases,” the White House said in an email blast Saturday evening.....Klain, who was appointed Ebola Czar on Friday by Obama, is not on this list. It's the second meeting in as many days on Ebola that Klain hasn’t attended after being appointed into the position on Friday.

Expert Warns Of Mutant Ebola Evolving To Spread 'Hotter And Faster'
Excerpt: Dr Jahrling explained that his team, who are working in the epicentre of the crisis in the Liberian capital of Monrovia, are seeing that the viral loads in Ebola patients are much higher than they are used to seeing. He told Vox.com: 'We are using tests now that weren't using in the past, but there seems to be a belief that the virus load is higher in these patients [today] than what we have seen before. If true, that's a very different bug."

Six Reasons to Panic. By Jonathon Last
Excerpt: As a rule, one should not panic at whatever crisis has momentarily fixed the attention of cable news producers. But the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, which has migrated to both Europe and America, may be the exception that proves the rule. There are at least six reasons that a controlled, informed panic might be in order. (Epidemeology is actually a mathematical equation and the numbers are not comforting. --Tom C.)

Interesting: Darren Wilson Provides First Public Account to Federal Investigators of What Happened in Ferguson. By Kyle Becker
Excerpt: The officer, Darren Wilson, has told the authorities that during the scuffle, Mr. Brown reached for the gun. It was fired twice in the car, according to forensics tests performed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The first bullet struck Mr. Brown in the arm; the second bullet missed. The forensics tests showed Mr. Brown’s blood on the gun, as well as on the interior door panel and on Officer Wilson’s uniform. Officer Wilson told the authorities that Mr. Brown had punched and scratched him repeatedly, leaving swelling on his face and cuts on his neck.

Interesting: Authorities say Michael Brown’s blood found on gun, inside police car
Excerpt: The evidence will make it harder for the Justice Department to prosecute Wilson on federal charges that he violated Brown’s civil rights, said the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case. Such evidence would also make it difficult for a county grand jury to indict Wilson on state charges, such as murder or manslaughter, said county sources who also are prohibited from talking on the record about the pending case. (They are not interested in evidence. They are interested in a politically correct outcome that appeals to the base. ~Bob)

Black Pastors Should Promote Marriage Rather Than Fight ‘Equality.’ Sharon Brooks Hodge
Excerpt: After decades of declining marriage rates and changes in family structure, the percentage of American adults who have never been married is at an historic high. According to Wendy Wang and Kim Parker, who authored the research report, the move away from marriage is attributed to a variety of factors. Not only are people marrying later in life, but more significant is the fact that increasingly young adults are cohabiting and raising children outside of marriage.
That is a critical observation. Currently, 72 percent of black children are being born into single-parent homes, which means that most black churches are filled with baby-mommas and baby-daddies, not husbands and wives raising children under the covenant of marriage as scripture prescribes. ... Sharon Brooks Hodge is executive director of Black Family Preservation Group, Inc., a national organization that promotes marriage and 2-parent homes as the best environment for raising children.

Obamacare Rates Rise in 3 Key Senate Race States. By Sandy Fitzgerald
Excerpt: Insurance costs aren't going up for individual health plans everywhere, reports Politico, and in some states, they're even dropping. But double-digit increases are hitting particularly hard in Louisiana, Iowa, and Alaska, three states where Democratic candidates can ill afford an "October surprise" that will hurt their races, according to Politico.

Health-care cancellation avalanche hits Colo. Democrats weeks before election
Excerpt: The Colorado Division of Insurance announced Friday a surge in health-care policy cancellations in the wake of Obamacare, just what Democratic candidates in high-profile races didn’t need less than three weeks before Election Day. In a letter to state Senate Republicans, Colorado insurance commissioner Marguerite Salazar said that more than 22,000 Coloradans received cancellation notices in the last month, and that 192,942 Coloradans will lose their policies at the end of 2015. (If you like your plan....~Bob)

Obamacare Rationing by Price: Accident or Design? By Mark Horne
Excerpt: Now we find that people, who have insurance through Obamacare, are finding that they can’t afford medical care. The New York Times reports,... (The liberal solution, of course, will be to piles more un-payable debt on your great grandkids to cover any group that votes Democrat. ~Bob)

Obama To Allow 100,000 Haitians Into America Without A Visa
Excerpt: Calling it "an irresponsible overreach of the executive branch’s authority," Senator Charles Grassley, ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, is criticizing an executive order issued by the president that would allow at least 100,000 Haitian nationals into the United States to be "reunited with their families."... U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the branch of the Department of Homeland Security that handles immigration benefits cases, announced Friday the program to unite Haitians already living in the U.S. with family members abroad will ramp up in 2015.... A similar program that reunited Central American children with their parents had a fraud rate of about 70%.

MS-13 members charged in 3 killings, attempted murder in Northern Virginia
Excerpt: Armed with two machetes and a sawed-off shotgun, MS-13 gang members allegedly set off in a car last October to carry out an assassination at a location as brazen as it was chilling: a Prince William County school. (Gee, if only they had a "path to citizenship," I'm sure they would be model citizens. Hope they move next to a Democrat congress critter. ~Bob)

Excerpt: A federal official holding an important and ultra-responsible post is on the way to prison for holding a citizenship fire sale for illegal aliens in America's Golden State, a haven for illegal aliens who are received with open arms by feckless political leaders, according to a former federal police official, Peter Knowles.

Leaked DHS Document: 167,000 Convicted Criminal Aliens At Large In US
Excerpt: Deportations from the interior of the United States declined 34 percent this year from last, according to a new report from the Center for Immigration Studies, derived largely from an internal Department of Homeland Security document. The CIS report released Wednesday and authored by the group’s director of policy studies, Jessica Vaughan, details the decline in immigration enforcement and reveals that there remain nearly 167,000 convicted criminal immigrants with final orders of removal still in the United States and “currently at large.”

Australian man charged with planning terror attack. ‘Syria recruiter’ Agim Kruezi charged with transporting firearm and possessing machetes, knives, balaclavas, military fatigues, fuel and corks
Excerpt: A man arrested in Australian counterterrorism raids in September is facing fresh charges of preparing a terrorist attack on home soil, police said on Friday. Agim Kruezi, 22, was initially accused of recruiting, funding and sending jihadist fighters to Syria after he was detained in Brisbane on September 10. (It's a shame that so many millions of Muslims don't understand Islam as well as Imam John Kerry or the progressive media. ~Bob)

Worth Reading: Why Europe Is Irrational About Israel. By David P. Goldman
Excerpt: Coming soon after Sweden's recognition of a non-existent state of Palestine, the British Parliament's 274-to-12 resolution to recognize "Palestine" flags a sea-change in European sentiment towards Israel. France is thinking of following suit. The European Community bureaucracy, meanwhile, has readied sanctions against Israel. One remonstrates in vain. The Gaza War should have taught the world that Israel cannot cede territory to Mahmoud Abbas, now in the 10th year of a 4-year term. Hamas has the support of 55% of West Bank Palestinians vs. just 38% for Abbas, and Hamas openly brags that it could destroy Israel more easily from firing positions in the West Bank. Only the Israeli military keeps Abbas in power; without the Israelis Hamas would displace Abbas in the West Bank as easily as it did in Gaza; and a Hamas government in the West Bank would make war on Israel, with horrifying consequences.

PC Cowards: Educational video warning of Asian grooming gangs was made for schools seven years ago but was hardly used amid fears of appearing racist

Better young girls get raped and abused than that bureaucrats get criticized by Muslims. ~Bob. Excerpt: An educational video warning schoolgirls about Asian grooming gangs was commissioned for schools in 2007 but was never promoted in the UK amid fears of appearing racist. The 20-minute film, My Dangerous Loverboy, features an Asian man in his 20s grooming a younger white girl - lavishing her with gifts and getting her drunk before forcing her to have sex for money. It was commissioned by child protection chiefs based in Yorkshire following reports of vulnerable girls being passed around groups of men for sex, according to a TV producer who worked on the project.

The U.S. Strategy to Defeat ISIS: A briefing by Max Boot
Excerpt: President Obama has not offered a cohesive strategy for fighting ISIS. Since 2010, his determination to disengage from Iraq and Syria was evident in his refusal to assist the Free Syrian Army and keep U.S. forces in Iraq beyond 2011. He has partially reversed his stance following the August 2014 beheadings of American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, but this is too little too late. ... Max Boot, Jeane J. Kirkpatrick Senior Fellow in National Security Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, is a foreign policy analyst and military historian who advised U.S. commanders in Iraq and Afghanistan. Mr. Boot briefed the Middle East Forum in a conference call on October 6, 2014.

Isis fighters 'crucify' 17-year-old boy in Syria
Excerpt: Isis fighters have reportedly executed a 17-year-old boy and left his body on display on a cross in Syria. Pictures being shared online show a banner attached to the teenager’s chest saying the boy has been crucified for taking photos of Isis military bases, as well as receiving “500 Turkish lira” for any footage taken.

Excerpt: His guests, David Miliband and some other clown, rush to absolve Islam from any responsibility for this, going on to argue with him that this is a Pakistani problem. They do not, however, address Maher’s point, that this blasphemy death sentence was just affirmed by a high court in Pakistan. His implication was that the court is made up entirely of Muslims, and they are officials of an Islamic Republic; is it really likely that they are finding a death penalty for blasphemy in Islamic law when there is none there?

The Shia-Sunni war Reaches Lebanon. By Jonathan Spyer
Excerpt: Hezbollah is under pressure as the consequences of its ongoing intervention in Syria have come back to bite the terrorist organization. There are increasing indications that the sectarian war raging in Iraq and Syria is now moving irrevocably into Lebanon. The Shi'ite group is currently seeking to shore up its legitimacy by reminding its constituents, and other Lebanese citizens, of the role that gains it the most domestic sympathy – resistance against Israel. It is likely the strike at Mount Dov last week was part of this effort.

Turkey's Boomerang War in Syria. By Burak Bekdil
Excerpt: At the end of 1998, Turkey threatened to take military action against President Hafez al-Assad's regime in Syria unless Damascus immediately stopped harboring Abdullah Ocalan, leader of the violent Kurdish separatist group, PKK. Al-Assad decided not to take the risk. And the Turks, in cooperation with the U.S., finally captured their public enemy No. #1 in Kenya, brought him to court and sentenced him to life. In a war-torn region, a war had been averted. A decade or so later, the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan (now president) and his foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu (now prime minister), declared al-Assad Jr., Bashar, and heir to the elder al-Assad's throne, their country's best regional ally.

Excerpt: The National Directorate of Security, Afghanistan's intelligence service, reported that senior al Qaeda leader Abu Bara al Kuwaiti was killed in a US airstrike in Lal Mandi in the Nazyan district in Nangarhar, which is adjacent to the border with the Tirah Valley in Pakistan's tribal agency of Khyber, Pajhwok Afghan News reported.
