All the latst news

And then there was one. Friday we had dinner with several folks, three of whom had lung transplants and are doing well. Dave, like me, was waiting for a lung. Last night he got the call and the transplant. No word on his condition. I'm not aware of anyone else waiting on the VA list, but of course it as to be a lung that matches blood type, size, etc. ~Bob

Beware the hidden costs of beautifully misnamed laws. By Victor Davis Hanson
Excerpt: Washington has a bad habit of naming laws by what they are not. These euphemisms usually win temporary public support. After all, who wants to be against anything "affordable"? But on examination, such idealistically named legislation usually turns out to be aimed at special interests and the opposite of what voters were promised.

Obama Is the Only reason our country is a flote. thank God for Obama. Ta party freaks are killing our country. (If this is real, she's one of the Westboro Baptist Church folks. ~Bob)

Americans will have an extra six weeks to buy health coverage before facing penalty
Delaying the date? That's a crazy, hostage-taking Republican, terrorist Tea Party idea, attacking settled law. Oh, wait, not the GOP this time? ~Bob

The High Cost of a Cheap Dollar
Excerpt: Evidence from the United States shows that currency depreciation leads to a temporary boost in exports, but reduced growth in total output. A small part of the boost to the export sector from currency depreciation appears to persist in the long run. But it is achieved only at the expense of slower growth in the economy as a whole.

How Fracking Helps Meet America's Energy Needs
Excerpt: Advancements, such as horizontal drilling, coupled with increasing global demand for oil and domestic demand for natural gas, have turned shale drilling into a bright spot for the U.S. economy. Natural gas has become the fuel of choice for generating base load electricity -- the minimum amount of power needed 24 hours a day. Gas is still the preferred fuel for peaking power dispatched to the electric grid during times of peak demand. Natural gas could not play this role without the vast reserves fracking opens up every day. Fracking is currently responsible for more than 30 percent of U.S. domestic oil and natural gas reserves, and the National Petroleum Council estimates that 60 percent to 80 percent of all U.S. drilling over the next decade will require fracking.

AARP Forgot Basic Math
Excerpt: AARP, formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons -- recently released a report proclaiming that "Social Security Generates Nearly $1.4 Trillion in Economic Activity and Supports More Than Nine Million Jobs." As great as that sounds, AARP's study is fundamentally flawed, says Andrew Biggs, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. ... The problem is that AARP overlooks the money pulled out of the economy through Social Security payroll taxes to fund these benefits. These taxes have what we might call a "divisor effect" -- for each dollar of taxes levied, workers have less to spend, and that reduction is passed on throughout the economy. If workers spend the same percentage of their incomes as retirees, then the net economic effect of Social Security isn't $1.4 trillion or 9 million jobs. It's zero.

Obamacare Is Double Trouble for Detroit Retirees. By Shikha Dalmia
Excerpt: Because of the city's bankruptcy, these former public employees are already on the hook for huge cuts to their meager annual pensions, which average about $20,000 for general workers and $40,000 for police and firefighters. Now, Detroit’s emergency manager, Kevyn Orr, has announced that to return the city to solvency, effective Jan. 1, he will stop providing coverage to 8,000 retirees under age 65. Instead, they will receive a $125 monthly stipend to use toward private plans from the exchange. (Spouses and dependents don't get anything.) (Hard to feel too bad for folks who not only voted overwhelming for Obama, but for Detroit's progressive Democrat rulers for 40 years. Elections have consequences. Bob)

Excerpt: After the federal government spent billions of dollars on federal tax credits and subsidies to promote all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, they accounted for less than half of one percent of the 11.7 million light vehicles purchased in the U.S. during the last nine months. (Not entirely wasted. Put tax dollars in the pockets of Democrat contributors and allowed liberals to feel good about themselves for saving the environment, the purpose of liberal policies. ~Bob)

Piers Morgan: 2nd Amendment “Clumsily Written” & Should Be “Rephrased”
http://lastresistance.com/3451/piers-morgan-2nd-amendment-clumsily-written-rephrased/
Excerpt: We all know that the 2nd Amendment wasn’t at all clumsily written. In fact, it states quite unequivocally that the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. You can’t get much clearer than that. Morgan was at the National Press Club plugging his own book, entitled Shooting Straight: Guns, Gays, God and George Clooney. During his spiel, he argued for a “rephrasing” of the 2nd Amendment (Will this obnoxious Limey ever mind his own business and GO HOME? --JB):

Whatever you do, don’t miss his final conclusion on media bias(watch video. --JB).

The press should be not only a collective propagandist, and a collective agitator, but also a collective organizer of the masses. --Vladimir Lenin. (How does this differ from Obama's view and what has been happening in our country? ~Bob)

Key suspects in Benghazi attack include former courier, bodyguard for Al Qaeda, sources say
Excerpt: At least two of the key suspects in the Benghazi terror attack were at one point working with Al Qaeda senior leadership, sources familiar with the investigation tell Fox News. (Interesting, but not too shocking. Whoever they are, we need to either grab them up for trial as murderers or maybe just use a drone to check them out of this world. --Del. Can't be true. Obama and his minions assured us this was caused by a YouTube video, not terrorism. ~Bob.)

Why ObamaCare is a fantastic success. By Wayne Allyn Root
Excerpt: There are two major political parties in America. I’m a member of the naïve, stupid, and cowardly one. I’m a Republican. How stupid is the GOP? They still don’t get it. (Mr. Root has been talking about what he believes Obama's real agenda is for a long time. I don't know he's right, but neither do I know he's wrong. It is scary to think about. --Del. I have conservative friends who think Obamacare was expected to fail, necessary on the way to a single-payer system like the UK. I dunno. I tend to subscribe to the "Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by incompetence" philosophy. ~Bob)

(The barbarians are coming. Too bad Rome didn't have the technology. ~Bob)

Excerpt: Soldiers attending a pre-deployment briefing at Fort Hood say they were told that evangelical Christians and members of the Tea Party were a threat to the nation and that any soldier donating to those groups would be subjected to punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. (Muslim jihadist groups? No problem, I guess. ~Bob)

My Fear. By Erick Erickson
Don't annoy the "tolerant left." ~Bob Excerpt: I once had a person leave a message on my home answering machine telling me how he was going to come to my house, tie me up, cut off my eye lids, and force me to watch as he raped and murdered my family. ... Memorial Day weekend last year someone called 911 claiming to be me. He said he, meaning me, had killed my wife and would kill the neighbors unless the police came to stop me. The police rolled into the driveway, blocked the street, and had me surrounded to figure out what happened. Luckily the police officer who saw me first recognized me from television.

The News in Zingers. By Argus Hamilton
Excerpt: USA Today reported a huge increase in medical school enrollments this year. Do the math. You take four years of college, add four years of medical school and three years of residency, it's still faster than waiting online for ObamaCare, plus you get to treat yourself.

Excerpt: So, you got one of our ambassadors killed and then lied outrageously about it because there was an election coming up? Not to worry. Oh, you ran guns to Mexican drug cartels and one of them was used to murder an ATF agent? No problemo. You spied on Americans? Punished Tea Partiers with tax audits? Wasted huge piles of taxpayer cash on green-energy boondoggles? Completely botched Obama’s signature “health care” law and drove him to an astonishing new low of dishonesty and delusion? It’s all good.

Excerpt: Thanks to a plan by President Obama to create a “unisex” look for the Corps, officials are on the verge of swapping out the Marines’ iconic caps – known as “covers” — with a new version that some have derided as so “girly” that they would make the French blush. (Note that in the end, General Amos gets to make the call on this. If he goes for the switch to these just darling hats, he will nail down the title of worst CMC in the last hundred years (if not longer). We need PC clothing in the Corps like a fish needs a bicycle. No, that's incorrect, we need PC clothing in the Corps like a man with bad hemorrhoids needs diarrhea. --Del)

Drop "So Help Me God" From AF Academy Honor Code Oath?
Excerpt: If you want to get really irritated, check this out. Now some people, apparently atheists, are saying that referring to the Divinity in any way, shape, or form, is the same as establishing a religion, and therefore you can't have an oath that ends "so help me God". What is this war on religion or even the faintest trace thereof? --Del. what will they substitute? So help me Obama? So help me global warming? ~Bob.

The IRS sent illegal immigrant families $1,000 checks totaling $4.2 billion through the federal government’s Additional Child Tax Credit program in the year 2010, when the agency’s improper targeting of conservative and tea party groups began. The child tax credit program was created in 1998 with a $400 cap and now has a $1,000 cap that was made permanent by the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, signed by President Obama.

NSA monitored calls of 35 world leaders after US official handed over contacts
Excerpt: The confidential memo reveals that the NSA encourages senior officials in its "customer" departments, such the White House, State and the Pentagon, to share their "Rolodexes" so the agency can add the phone numbers of leading foreign politicians to their surveillance systems. The document notes that one unnamed US official handed over 200 numbers, including those of the 35 world leaders, none of whom is named. These were immediately “tasked” for monitoring by the NSA.

Merkel spying claim: with allies like these, who needs enemies?

Excerpt: Yet nothing could be more personal for a foreign leader than to find their own mobile phones tapped by a nation they considered an essential friend and ally. That appears to be the case for Angela Merkel, as it has been for Mexico's Enrique Peña Nieto. The other humiliating phone call of the week was on Monday with François Hollande, whose phone was not bugged as far as he knew, but who demanded an explanation for the revelation – once more from the Snowden files – that the NSA had been recording tens of millions of French phone calls a month.

Moreover, the fact that you are giving up your right to privacy is hidden in source code that reads, "You have no reasonable expectation of privacy regarding any communication of any data transmitted or stored on this information system."

Excerpt: The head of Saudi intelligence says his country is in the middle of a “major shift” away from the United States, after disagreements over a changingMiddle East severely strained relations between the longtime allies…. “The shift away from the U.S. is a major one,” said a source privy to the conversation…. If the Saudis are serious about cutting America loose, Majidyar worries the loss of such a “critical ally” would be devastating, with “wider implications for the Middle East’s stability and American interests in the region.”

Gen. Ray Odierno told a Washington conference Monday that the U.S. Army had not conducted any training in the last six months of the fiscal year ending Sept. 30. (Gee, no training and very minimal units ready to go anywhere..... and we are surprised why? Just keeping track of what the priorities have been for this Administration tells you what is going to happen. --Del)

Excerpt: Wisconsin’s Dairyland Power Cooperative announced it will be closing two coal-fired generating units, partly due to regulatory requirements that make it harder to burn coal…. The Alma Station will add to the hundreds of coal plants that have been closed or slated for early retirement due to Environmental Protection Agency regulations targeting coal-fired power plants, according to coal industry estimates. “Already, EPA regulations have contributed to the closure of more than 300 coal units in 33 states,” said Laura Sheehan, spokeswoman for the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity. (The poor pay more for the dreams of Al Gore. ~Bob)

Excerpt: Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee have obtained an internal Department of Homeland Security draft final regulation that would lift a 20 year ban on Libyans coming to the US to work in sensitive fields. The document — highlighted Thursday by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte of Virginia and Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz — shows that DHS is working to amend its regulations to eliminate the restrictions on Libyan nationals and foreign nationals acting on behalf of Libyan entities from coming to the United States to work in aviation maintenance, flight operations, or to study nuclear-related fields. “It is shocking that the Obama Administration is turning a blind eye to real terrorist threats that exist in Libya today,” Goodlatte said in a statement. (If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it is a duck. --Barb)

Netanyahu, speaking at the UN, said that “the dangers of a nuclear-armed Iran and the emergence of other threats in our region have led many of our Arab neighbors to recognize, finally recognize, that Israel is not their enemy.” He added: “This affords us the opportunity to overcome the historic animosities and build new relationships, new friendships, new hopes.”

Virginia Farmer Starts Property Rights Legal Revolution. By Mark J. Fitzgibbons
Excerpt: When Virginia's Fauquier County cited farmer Martha Boneta last year for hosting a birthday party for eight 10-year-old girls because she did not have a permit and site plan, little did county officials think they would set off a revolution for legal remedies against such abuses. The "Boneta Bill" introduced in the Virginia General Assembly last session provided remedies against county governments and county officials who violate rights of farmers, or otherwise abuse the law. Farmers could proactively institute lawsuits for damages, including their legal fees, against law-violating bureaucrats.

VIDEO: Hillary Heckled: "Benghazi, You Let Them Die!" By Daniel Greenfield
Excerpt: Hillary’s response is to give a generic statement about the importance of talking together instead of shouting. Except that the only way anyone can reach her to demand the truth is by shouting.

Flesh-Eating Virus Joins Al Qaeda and Hezbollah in Syrian Civil War. By Daniel Greenfield

(If the current Post staff had been around in WWII, they would have told the Germans and Japanese we were reading their codes. ~Bob)

The Western Left’s Fatwa Against Muslim Liberals. By Daniel Greenfield
Excerpt: The backlash against Morsi caught Western liberals by surprise because it did not fit a region they had compressed in their minds into American puppets and Islamic populists. It was a leftist formula that ironically did not take into account the local left. The Western left still refuses to deal with the events in Egypt as anything but a military coup; completely disregarding the populist muscle from the Arab left.

Obamacare a disaster that needs fixing. By Aaron Carroll
Excerpt: Administration officials are now calling in "more computer experts" to try and fix the problem. But this may be too little, too late. Some are saying that even if the administration pours in massive resources, the problems may not be fixed by December 15, the deadline for when insurance needs to be bought for it to be covering people on January 1.

Excerpt: Americans were shocked to learn that the I.R.S. has announced a two-week delay in processing tax filings as a result of the government shutdown. I mean, since this is not an election year, the I.R.S staff should not have to bear the burden of snooping on the Tea Party and other conservative tax payers. They will not have to stonewall conservative political groups or manage the difficult task of funneling federal money to Acorn, The Black Panther Party and La Raza. And wouldn't you think they'd have more time to process returns now that they've been busted for making comedic videos about how much fun it is to audit and harass taxpayers? And, now that the iron fist of the federal government has precluded their annual conventions in the Bahamas, now limiting them to party hearty in Miami and Las Vegas, you would think they could spend a little more time in the office.
