The Morning Dispatch: Qassem Suleimani Is Dead
Excerpt: On Thursday night, a statement from the Pentagon confirmed that the United States had taken “decisive defensive action” to kill Qassem Suleimani, the longtime leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ Quds Force, for decades the leading facilitator of regime-supported terror operations. The Iranian general was killed as he traveled in a convoy near Baghdad International Airport with other senior officials linked to Iran’s military and external terror networks. The Pentagon statement described the action as both retaliatory and preemptive, noting that Suleimani “was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region” and had orchestrated attacks on U.S. bases in Iraq, including the attack on December 27 that claimed the life of a U.S. government contractor. The statement also noted that Suleimani approved the attacks Tuesday on the U.S. Embassy led openly by terrorists backed by Iran. [This is one of two major, in-depth articles covering Suleimani’s death overnight. The other is from the NY Times and may not be easily accessible to non- subscribers (link here: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/03/briefing/iran-democrats-carlos-ghosn.html?te=1&nl=morning-briefing&emc=edit_dk_20200103?campaign_id=9&instance_id=14935&segment_id=20013&user_id=6d02106d74d1b777cf2232e46da82a4a®i_id=10316911320200103) (Both articles are very detailed. Suleimani’s deputy–since 1997, some 22 or 23 years–has been promoted to replace him. This could be either a VERY good or a VERY bad thing; we’ll have to wait to see. The Dispatch's David French points out these US actions are completely within the current rules of engagement and governing law. Ron P.] It's like we killed Himmler in 1942. ~Bob)
