US military intervention on the table for Venezuela by Joel Gehrke
Excerpt: A military intervention to oust Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro remains “a very serious option” for the United States, according to President Trump’s national security team. “Obviously, that’s a result that no one would like to see but clearly one that is seriously considered as events unfold,” a senior administration official speaking on condition of anonymity. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., wants President Trump to put both the Maduro regime and the colectivos on the official list of foreign terrorist organizations, alongside groups such as ISIS and al Qaeda. “The truth is the Maduro regime built up this network of colectivos as its own private security force to protect its grip on power and violently resist any effort to dislodge it from power,” Rubio said.
No end of trouble to this. In the first place, as it is, Venezuela is an excellent bad example, warning the rest of Latin America that socialism doesn't work even under the most favorable conditions. Better, unlike Cuba we didn't have to help Venezuela to ruin; they took every step themselves. But if we do lose our minds and intervene, as much as they suck they'll still make it miserable for us and no government that we might set up will ever have a trace of legitimacy. So let them rot until they fix their own problems. --Tom Kratman
