General News and Comment

KY: McConnell takes lead and momentum
Excerpt: The poll found that 48 percent of likely voters plan to vote for McConnell while just 43 percent plan to back Grimes. Three percent said they are voting for Libertarian David Patterson and 6 percent said they haven't made up their minds. While the results are within the poll's margin of error of 4.1 percentage points, McConnell's lead shows that he has the momentum in the race's waning days. Grimes, meanwhile has gone from being 2 percentage points ahead in the poll to 5 behind.

So the desperation "Hail Mary" happens: Mitch McConnell’s sick new low: New mailers expose the GOPer’s shameless voter suppression tactics
Excerpt: Mailed in envelopes that blare “ELECTION VIOLATION NOTICE” and state “You are at risk of acting on fraudulent information,” the Kentucky Republican Party issued a letter that accuses Grimes of “blatant lies” about McConnell’s advocacy for a local coal plant and his support from “anti-coal activists like Michael Bloomberg.” The letter also takes Grimes to task for her support among “anti-coal and anti-gun” Hollywood celebrities and accuses her of hypocrisy in her call for an increased minimum wage because a restaurant owned by her family pays employees less than the minimum. (Gee, you can tell from the headline that Salon is an unbiased, straightforward journalism site. Of course, last minute charges that won't be ruled upon until after the votes are counted are nothing new, for either party. There's even a report being circulated that 40kg Of Cocaine Found On Mitch McConnell’s Father-In-Law’s Boat. Sounds bad, right? But the "boat" is one of several ships owned by the guy's company. No indication that the father-in-law is really involved, never mind McConnell himself, but the headline names McConnell. More likely to be the ship captain or a couple of crew members. Typical left wing smear. (http://www.addictinginfo.org/2014/10/31/mcconnell-cocaine/) ~Bob)

PPP has McConnell up 8 in Kentucky and Cotton up 8 in Arkansas. Both of those races have fallen out of reach for Dems in recent weeks.

http://www.politico.com/story/2014/10/kentucky-labor-unions-112385.html#.VFVvCd7Xbos.twitter
Excerpt: All eyes will be on Kentucky Tuesday as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell faces a serious challenge from Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes. But beneath that marquee matchup lies a fierce battle between labor unions and anti-union groups over whether Kentucky, long a rare pro-union outpost in the anti-union South, becomes a right-to-work state.

Excerpt: The New York State Democratic Committee is bullying people into voting next week with intimidating letters warning that it can easily find out which slackers fail to cast a ballot next Tuesday. “Who you vote for is your secret. But whether or not you vote is public record,” the letter says. “We will be reviewing voting records . . . to determine whether you joined your neighbors who voted in 2014.”

Krauthammer: Race-Baiting By Dems What Happens When You ‘Don’t Have Any Arguments’ [VIDEO]
Excerpt: Krauthammer: Well, the desperation and the ad hominems come into play when you don’t have any arguments. the 2010 election, the shellacking the Democrats took was about ideology. It was about liberal overreach–the stimulus, Obamacare, over-taxation, over-regulation, and we know what the result was. that set off this counterreaction called the Tea Party. And what we’re seeing now six years later is an election that’s not only about ideology. It is a rejection of hyper-liberalism, but there’s now an overlay of sheer incompetence.

GOP likely to win in AR and KY, Louisiana could still be close
Excerpt: PPP's final polls in Arkansas and Kentucky find Republicans in a strong position to win the Senate seats in those states on Tuesday, but the Louisiana Senate race still has the potential to be pretty competitive. ... In Arkansas, we find Republicans leading the races for Governor and the Senate by 8-10 points. Tom Cotton is up 49/41 on Mark Pryor, and Asa Hutchinson is up 51/41 on Mike Ross. (Think PPP is leftist polling group. ~Bob)

Excerpt: News is piling up right now about crunch time for the Iran nuclear talks; ISIS, Ebola, Russian warplanes buzzing NATO, and upheaval in Burkina Faso (where this week protesters set fire to the Ouagadougou parliament, the longtime president tweeted his resignation and fled the country, the military stepped in, and fallout of the upheaval may entail problems for U.S. anti-terror operations in West Africa). What next? Call me impulsive, but I had a twitch today that amid these crises, it’s about time for North Korea to throw its hat into the ring — with its next nuclear test.

Connecticut Governor: Malloy (D) 48%, Foley (R) 47%
Excerpt: Does Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy have a chance to keep his job after all?

62p AN HOUR: What women sleeping 16 to a room get paid to make Ed and Harriet's £45 'This Is What A Feminist Looks Like' T-shirts
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2817191/62p-HOUR-s-women-sleeping-16-room-paid-make-Ed-Harriet-s-45-Feminist-Looks-Like-T-shirts.html
Excerpt: Feminist T-shirts proudly worn by Ed Miliband, Nick Clegg and Harriet Harman are made in ‘sweatshop’ conditions by migrant women paid just 62p an hour, a Mail on Sunday investigation has revealed. The women machinists on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius sleep 16 to a room – and earn much less than the average wage on the island. The £45 T-shirts carry the defiant slogan ‘This is what a feminist looks like’. But one of the thousands of machinists declared: ‘We do not see ourselves as feminists. We see ourselves as trapped.’

Guns

Open-Carry Advocate Targeted In 'Swatting'
Excerpt: He said yes when an officer asked if he could remove a handgun from a holster Dickens was wearing. He gave the same answer when the officer asked to take temporary custody of a pocketknife he had in his pocket. In the end, he’s thankful he’s still alive after an up-close and personal encounter with “swatting,’ the practice of making a false report of an on-going critical incident to prompt an emergency response.

Senate Flip Key to Securing Gun Rights. By David Codrea
Excerpt: The elections are almost upon us, and activist gun owners are looking at the possibility of fundamentally transforming the composition of the U.S. Senate by switching the majority party to the Republicans. While support by individual GOP incumbents and candidates at times runs counter to the interests of Second Amendment advocates, there is no question that, as a whole, the Democrats, with a central component in their platform calling for “strengthening our background check system [and] commonsense improvements—like reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole,” is the party of “gun control.”

Glad they are okay. ~Bob)

Race Card News

Maybe Racist? Black Power: A Done Deal. By Fred Reed
Excerpt: As I write America waits, again, to see whether blacks will riot, this time in Ferguson. Will they loot, burn, kill, and rape? The usual? The police in Ferguson prepare to protect stores from looters, as rioters seem to regard their insurrections as shopping opportunities. Will it come, we wonder tensely? Will the destruction get out of hand, spread to other cities? (Liberals, centrists and many conservatives will find this piece racist. I know too many decent black folks, including some fine Marines like my late Drill Instructor, Gunnery Sergeant Ezekiel Owens, Jr. (Ret) to put people in groups like this. But some of the points he makes should be considered and discussed. ~Bob)

"You're Greener than Gore" News

UN climate report offers stark warnings, hope
Excerpt: Pointing to the solution, the IPCC said the costs associated with mitigation action such as shifting the energy system to solar and wind power and other renewable sources and improving energy efficiency would reduce economic growth only by 0.06 percent annually. And Pachauri said that cost should be measured against the implications of doing nothing, putting "all species that live on this planet" at peril. The report is meant as a scientific roadmap for the U.N. climate negotiations, which continue next month in LimaPeru. (Per article, global summit in Paris in 2015 to adopt "global plan." Solar is frying birds. Wind turbines chop up birds, eagles bats, insect eaters, leading to overgrowth of insects, spreading of diseases that would be controlled by predators. UN and ilk trying to play gods with our world.... manipulating the jet streams....There is a price for their unregulated experimentation. --Barb)

Religion of Peace News

Worth Reading: A halfhearted U.S. war effort in the Middle East. By Andrew J. Bacevich
Excerpt: A common thread connects U.S. military operations of the last 20 or more years: We've persistently tried to fight them on the cheap. In gauging the requirements of a prospective campaign, “What do we need to win?” has repeatedly taken a back seat to “What's the minimum we can get by with?” The ongoing air campaign against Islamic State illustrates the point. Having declared that this new threat must be destroyed, the Obama administration refuses to provide the forces needed to do just that. (Bacevich is not always my favorite military writer, he has occasionally said not so bright things about Viet Nam, but this time he has hit one out of the park. No damn half measures, don't send our people into danger unless you are reading and willing to do whatever it's going to take to really do the job right and get it over with. That is what makes sacrifice worthwhile, and incidentally, gets us the respect needed for us to function well as a force for good in the world. Wasting billions but more importantly, lives has not worked at all for us for a long time now, what does it take for our leaders to figure out we have to do things differently? --Del)

Team Obama Inadvertently Takes ‘Credit’ for Ensuring Iran Goes Nuclear
Excerpt: Much has already been written about Jeffrey Goldberg’s piece this week in The Atlantic, where two senior Obama administration officials deride Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu as “chickensh*t.” Most pundits have focused on the juvenile name-calling, but the importance of that is dwarfed by a devastating admission that was inadvertently made by one of those officials: Thanks to the Obama administration’s pressure on Israel, it is now too late to prevent Iran from going nuclear. (Official credits "our pressure" for stopping Israel. So, Iran goes nuclear along with N. Korea and what happens to the security of the United States? What's it matter? --Barb)
