Today's items of interest

Busybody Politics. By Thomas Sowell
Excerpt: It is hard to read a newspaper, or watch a television newscast, without encountering someone who has come up with a new "solution" to society's "problems." Sometimes it seems as if there are more solutions than there are problems. On closer scrutiny, it turns out that many of today's problems are a result of yesterday's solutions.

By God, Keep the Faith & Comply With Law. By Andy Weddington
Excerpt: As community government, leadership, is entrusted with fiscal responsibilities, a fitting solution to this stupid miff struck me. And, once a citizen of Salisbury and with plenty of kin there, I posted that idea in comment on the paper's online website below the article...

Obama’s Watergates: Denial, evasion, “Let me be perfectly clear” — is this 2013 or 1973? By Victor Davis Hanson
Excerpt: The truth about Benghazi, the Associated Press/James Rosen monitoring, the IRS corruption, the NSA octopus, and Fast and Furious is still not exactly known.

How ObamaCare Hurts Cancer Patients
Excerpt: President Obama promised to mend the failings in the American health care system, and yet for cancer treatment, ObamaCare is taking a rotten feature of the old system and making it worse. The Affordable Care Act expands a program called 340B, which siphons money from drug makers and insurers to subsidize certain hospitals. The program has been expanded as a way to offset some of the cuts that the law imposes on hospitals. One significant side effect: 340B is increasing the cost of cancer care, and harming its quality, says Scott Gottlieb, a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.

Jimmy Carter's ghost stalks Obama White House. By Liz Peek
Excerpt: Vague terrorist threats shutting down nineteen of our embassies, Russian strongman Putin thumbing his nose at President Obama, Iran jerking our chain – the U.S. hasn’t looked this cowardly on the world stage since the Jimmy Carter administration. Here at home, too, we’ve gone back to the Carter future; unemployment is high, Keynesian economics are all the rage, our professorial president is increasingly whiny and ineffectual; all that’s missing is a cardigan sweater and that infernal violin.

The News in Zingers. By Argus Hamilton
Excerpt: The State Department closed U.S. embassies in the Middle East due to a threat from al-Qaeda cells. Reaction was furious. The INS is so mad at al-Qaeda they threatened to revoke their student visas so they'll never complete pilot school in time for the Super Bowl.

Excerpt: An armed 14-year-old with a violent rap sheet was shot dead in The Bronx yesterday by a cop who had been on the job for less than a month, officials said. Surveillance video shows Shaaliver Douse, a suspected gang member, chasing and shooting at a young rival on Courtlandt Avenue near East 151st Street just before 3 a.m., police said. (Here we go again. “Shaaliver was a good kid.” His aunt is furious that the police didn’t “shoot to wound” to “break him down” even though the kid had just fired three rounds at another kid, cranked off a round at the cops and had just beat an attempted murder rap. –TC. Note how the family takes no responsibility for the kid’s behavior. Guess he could have been Obama, 35 years ago.~Bob)

Three Black Teens Stomp White Kid 23 Times After He Refuses to Buy Their Pot (Video)
Could have been Obama, 35 years ago. ~Bob.

Excerpt: Islamists from Chechnya have severely abused a couple in the central receiving point [for asylum seekers] in the Brandenburg, Germany. Their motivation: The couple, who are refugees from Caucasus, had behaved immorally.

Documents: IRS targeting of pro-life groups continues
Excerpt: The Internal Revenue Service continues to target pro-life conservative groups applying for tax-exempt status despite pending investigations into the IRS targeting scandal, according to documents obtained by The Daily Caller. (Is it stupidity or arrogance for the IRS to still be targeting conservative groups? Maybe both, but it's still shocking and depressing to see. Del. Just following orders…~Bob.)

God damn the AP for the half-truth! The missing part in the photograph "Execution in Saigon" during the Tet Offensive of 1968
http://thegioinguoiviet.net/showthread.php?p=98318
Excerpt: A lot has been said about the photograph "Execution in Saigon" by photographer Eddie Adams of the Associated Press (AP) where South Vietnam's National Police Chief, Brig. General Nguyen Ngoc Loan, executed a VC guerrilla on the street. It has also been said that the VC, Nguyen Van Lem, aka Bay Lop, was a member of a commando team that had just massacred a family of an ARVN officer but AP never published the related photograph. Here it is! (The street execution of a captured VC during the street battles in Saigon in the Tet offensive is one of the most famous images of the war. It was used mainly to depict our allies as casual murderers of POWs, and it ruined the life of the ARVN general who did the shooting. "A picture is worth 1000 words" is actually very deceiving, depending on the caption that goes with the picture. In this case, the captions were misleading partial truths. The article tells the full story. --Del)

Open Borders, Open Wallets: Clinton Cronies Profiting from Fast-Tracked Visas? A federally funded "green" car firm is in the mix: the perfect "Progressive" scandal?
Excerpt: Because the investigation involves allegations of neglecting security concerns found in suspect visa applications from China, the attention from the Republican side of the Committee on this issue going forward is something to watch closely. The allegations first reported by AP on Monday involve Mayorkas’ relationship with Hillary Clinton’s brother, Anthony Rodham. The relationship stretches back to the Bill Clinton days, when both were involved in trying to commute drug charges brought against the son of a major Clinton donor.

Excerpt: As most of us know, it’s a bit more complicated than that, but Obama — and therefore the administration, State Department, intelligence and military — threw in to a greater or lesser extent with the Brotherhood and their Islamist colleagues. They did this despite the Brotherhood’s obvious extreme misogyny and homophobia, which, under normal circumstances, we would assume to be anathema to so-called “progressives.” …. (Obama’s putative buddy Turkey’s Erdogan famously said, “democracy is like a train. You take it where you have to go, and then you get off.”)

Exclusive--RNC to NBC, CNN: Dump Hillary Docs Or We Will Dump Debates
http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2013/08/05/RNC-to-NBC-CNN-Dump-Hillary-Docs-Or-We-Will-Dump-DebatesOn Monday, RNC Chair Reince Priebus sent stinging letters to NBC and CNN concerning their recently announced decisions to produce films celebrating the life of Hillary Clinton. The RNC sees the odd programming move as an in-kind contribution to Clinton's presumed campaign for President in 2016. As a result, the party will formally bar Republicans from partnering with the networks on any primary or Presidential debates in 2016. (Oh, and she is on a month-long break with gal pal Huma in the Hamptoms, just awaiting coronation by Gollywood. –Barb)

Atheism to Replace Religion by 2041: The Facts
Excerpt: The Las Vegas Guardian Express writer, Rebecca Savastio falsely attributes to me the claim that religion “will completely disappear by 2041.” What I do project is that religious people will comprise a minority by that date, a very different prediction. (2041 will be well after what I now see as the almost inevitable fiscal collapse, followed by social and political collapse, widespread death, violence, riots, bloodshed and hunger. I think the survivors will rediscover faith. ~Bob.)

Labor Unions' Latest Problem: Obamacare's 'Cadillac Tax' Harms Their Gold-Plated Health Insurance Plans. By Avik Roy
Excerpt: Now, we learn that public-sector unions, representing government employees, are hopping mad about a different aspect of our health law: its steep excise tax on costly health insurance plans, also known as the “Cadillac tax.”

Egyptian belly dancer's anti-Obama video goes viral
Wow, in this four minute dance and lecture, she really comes down hard on Obama. No mincing words for her, she goes right for the jugular. Clearly she is of the party that wanted Morsi out and is against the Muslim Brotherhood. So she is brave to make this video, because the Brotherhood guys will be gunning for her. Literally. And interesting intro to Egyptian politics. --Del

Excerpt: Maryland’s Insurance Commission touted the state’s proposed rates last week as some of the lowest in the nation, but according to a recent GAO report, the least expensive Obamacare plan will be 83 percent higher than the least expensive plan under Maryland’s current system.

Excellent advice: 73 Rules For Running For President As A Republican: Run To Win in 2016. By Dan McLaughlin
Excerpt: But even leaving those aside, it’s possible to draw some lessons from the past few GOP campaign cycles and offer some advice that any prospective candidate should heed, the sooner the better.

ObamaCare: A Death Sentence For Black Men! By Stacy Swimp
Excerpt: The lives of countless Black men have been saved, due to prostate cancer screening with yearly PSA tests. Under ObamaCare, Black men will no longer receive the routine PSA prostate cancer screening as preventative treatment.

In the wake of Alex Rod's suspension, Obama released a statement today, "if I had a son playing baseball he would look like Alex."

WaPo Editorial: Wishful thinking on the war on terror
Excerpt: Mr. Obama is right to worry about the corrosive effect, for example on civil liberties, of perpetual war. But like all wars, this one will end only if one party is defeated or both agree to lay down their weapons. Neither appears likely any time soon, and the president’s eagerness to disengage, while understandable and in sync with U.S. public opinion, may in the end lengthen the conflict.

Renewable energy: Burning US trees in UK power stations
Excerpt: Environmentalists are trying to block the expansion of a transatlantic trade bringing American wood to burn in European power stations. The trade is driven by EU rules promoting renewable energy to combat climate change. … The implications are complicated and disputed, but it is clear that EU leaders did not have burning American wood in mind when they mandated that 20% of Europe's energy should come from "renewable" sources.

Another violent Democrat
Excerpt: Some weird, decidedly left-wing politics were espoused by Ross Township, PA shooter Rockne Newell. Newell killed three before being shot by his own gun. His facebook profile paints the picture of a left-wing ideologue. He ranted about environmental issues and voted for Barack Obama.

Excerpt: If a booming metropolis like Chicago is sinking under the weight of underfunded public worker pensions, how could we possibly expect Detroit or hundreds of other municipalities to survive? The pension fund for retired Chicago teachers stands at risk of collapse. The city’s four funds for other retired city workers are short by $19.5 billion. At least one of the funds is in peril of running out of money in less than a decade. And starting in 2015, the city will be required by the state to make far larger contributions to the funds, which could leave it hundreds of millions of dollars in the red — as much as it would cost to pay 4,300 police officers to patrol the streets for a year.

The Pampered, Good Life Of Ft. Hood Shooter
Excerpt: Nearly four years after Islamist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan shouted “Allahu akbar!” (“Allah is greater!”) and brutally murdered 14 people (including an unborn baby) and injured 30 others at Fort Hood, Texas, he now receives free helicopter rides from the local jail nearly every day, lives in a private room built to accommodate his medical needs, wears a beard against Army regulations, travels with his own security detail, has received numerous trial delays and collects a full salary of about $80,000 a year – all while many of his victims say they’ve been forgotten.

Excerpt: Two Republican senators said Tuesday that they've personally urged the Egyptian government to release Muslim Brotherhood prisoners, after hosting meetings with top officials in Cairo as part of an Obama administration-sanctioned visit. But McCain and Graham said they urged Egypt's government to release Islamist prisoners supportive of Morsi before starting negotiations. He said those negotiations should include the Muslim Brotherhood. (POTUS and SOS send 2 GOP to tell Egypt--whose populace has just said they do not want radical Islam or MB--to take it anyway and let them go join the rest of AQ breaking out of jail and making “significant threats” that really make all that NSA spying on the folks mandatory. Who paid for this friggin’ trip? –Barb)

Insane: University Won't Fire Professor After Learning He Killed His Family
Excerpt: Administrators at a private university in Illinois are standing by a professor, despite revelations that he shot and killed his father, mother, and teenage sister in 1967. (But if he ever used the “N” word, he’d be banished from society forever. ~Bob.)

Ah, the gentle, tolerant left…

Old, but: Voter ID: Latino Voters Strongly Support Voter ID Laws, Poll Says
Excerpt: In its most recent study, the Pew Hispanic Center found that as many as 71 percent of Latino registered voters support the controversial law, which this year will be enforced for the first time in 11 states. Among all registered voters, the ID law, which requires voters to show photo identification in order to cast a ballot, is supported by 77 percent.

CNN's Burnett on Benghazi: "One Year Later, Justice Has Not Been Served...May Never Be Served"

Cord Cutting: Existential Threat to CNN, MSNBC Accelerates
Excerpt: A new report shows that cable and satellite pay TV providers lost 380,000 customers over this quarter last year. Over the last 12 months, the number of customers declined by 911,000, up from 258,000 the previous year. That might represent only a little over 1% of overall customers. But the pace of what is known as cord cutting is accelerating -- as is an existential threat to the survival of CNN and MSNBC.

Global Warming as Faith. By Norman Rogers
Excerpt: Today's believers in global warming, like the intellectuals in the 1930s, fiercely defend their wacky faith in the face of massive and contrary evidence. They are vested in a theory that is precious to them. Their scientific studies pick and choose from an evidence buffet. When an ideology is precious, the believers become aggressively hostile toward infidels.

The Inequality That Matters. By Megan McArdle
Excerpt: My grandfather worked as a grocery boy until he was 26, in the depths of the Great Depression. For six years, he supported a wife on that salary -- and no, it’s not because You Used To Be Able To Support A Family On A Grocery Boy’s Wages Until These Republicans Ruined Everything. He and my grandmother moved into a room in his parents’ home, cut a hole through the wall for their stovepipe and set up housekeeping. They got married on Thanksgiving, because that was the only day he could get off. My grandmother spent six years carefully piecing his tiny salary into envelopes -- so much for food, for rent, for gasoline for the car he needed to get eight miles into town. And they stayed married for 67 years, until my grandfather’s death in 2004.
