For your long weekend reading

I will likely be off line for four days for the long weekend, and return to more e-mail than I can handle. Thanks to all who contributed. Again, a lot on Syria. Enjoy these offerings over the holiday, and stay safe. ~Bob

Warning for the National Vietnam and Gulf War Veterans Coalition

Excerpt: Democratic Sens. Barack Obama and Joe Biden repeatedly criticized ambassador’s John R. Bolton’s assessment that the dictatorship was seeking weapons of mass destruction only eight years ago.

Excerpt: We are on the verge of a war with Syria. Yet I don’t think the administration has as of yet articulated what its aims are and thus is confused about the means of obtaining them. Is the point of the impending military action to remove Assad, engage his opposition, and foster a consensual society in his place, as if the U.S. can at last do what so far the Arab Spring has not?

Boehner letter to Obama on Syria

Obama Leaks His Own War. By Daniel Greenfield
Excerpt: Stand outside the New York Times building with a bucket in one hand and a thick wad of wood pulp in the other, and you may even be able to figure out whether we’re going to war or, as one official told the Los Angeles Times, the air strikes will be “just muscular enough not to get mocked”… but not sinewy enough to really upset Tehran and Moscow.

Guest Post: What to do About Syria. By Col. Don Myers

AP Sources: Intelligence on Weapons No 'Slam Dunk'
Excerpt: The intelligence linking Syrian President Bashar Assad or his inner circle to an alleged chemical weapons attack that killed at least 100 people is no "slam dunk," with questions remaining about who actually controls some of Syria's chemical weapons stores and doubts about whether Assad himself ordered the strike, U.S. intelligence officials say. (Once we bomb Assad, Muslims who hate us—a majority—will rally to him. If it turns out we bombed the wrong folks, most Muslims will rally to him except those fighting him. ~Bob)

U.S. Facing Test on Data to Back Action on Syria
Excerpt: American officials said Wednesday there was no “smoking gun” that directly links President Bashar al-Assad to the attack, and they tried to lower expectations about the public intelligence presentation.

Syria. By Jim Geraghty, Morning Jolt
Excerpt: Attention, Democrats: our president is considering unilateral strikes against a Baathist dictator in the Middle East with a small coaltion and no U.N. authorization over WMDs, starting a war . . . that Donald Rumsfeld opposes. The Washington Post's liberal columnist, Eugene Robinson, supports it. It's like everyone in U.S. politics from 2003 just decided to trade uniforms and play for the opposing team simultaneously. Have Cindy Sheehan, the Dixie Chicks, and Janeane Garofalo called for air strikes yet? When does Michael Moore unveil his pro-war film? When do AEI, Halliburton, and Toby Keith attend an anti-war rally?

Excerpt: This is not a military action that we are undertaking to defend ourselves from attack or to protect a core interest. The congressional power to declare war, if it is not to be a dead letter, has to apply here. And it seems to me exceedingly unlikely that Congress would vote to commit us in Syria, because the public manifestly opposes it.
Obama, Syria and Iraq: Any End But Victory: Making It Up As He Goes Along. By Dan McLaughlin
Excerpt: Nor is it in line with what Obama, Biden and Kerry used to claim to believe. Once upon a time, Obama’s expressed willingness to meet with leaders like Assad made him popular in SyriaThen-Senator Obama argued in the 2008 campaign that “[t]he President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation” (Senator Biden agreed); now, as in Libya, Obama has no interest in asking for Congressional approval.

Russia sends warships to Mediterranean as Syria tension rises
This deployment may not mean anything, but Obama is in way over his narcissistic head in the Middle East, and the arrogant fool is liable to start a real war. If the U.S bombs Syria, they have already said they will attack Israel. Iran is likely to join in, and Israel will bite back. If that happens, we are obliged to help defend Israel, and Russia is allied with both Syria and Iran. Of course, we have a military genius, in the person of Chuck Hagel, running the Department of Defense, and horse-faced John Kerry as Secretary of State, so everything will probably turn out all right. Sleep tight, America. – LLW

BREAKING: White House warns Russia to remove ships from Mediterranean, or be called racists.

Excerpt: The outspoken anti-war activist said any such action would plunge the United States into another war in theMiddle East and embolden Islamist militants fighting Bashar Assad's regime. “So what, we're about to become Al Qaeda's air force now?” Kucinich said. “This is a very, very serious matter that has broad implications internationally. And to try to minimize it by saying we're just going to have a 'targeted strike' — that's an act of war. (Obama the uniter—he’s put me and Kucinich on the same side! ~Bob.)

Ethnic Cleansing Begins In Syria
Excerpt: As far as I can discern the sum total of the reasoning for any attack on Syrian government forces and facilities is the use of chemical weapons. It can’t be an objection to the slaughter of civilians as our new BFFs in Syria have an uninterrupted record of massacre and atrocity. Now they have begun a campaign of what seems to be ethnic cleansing in Syrian Kurdistan:

Good Column: Obama's careless remarks may lead the U.S. to war. By George Will
Excerpt: Barack Obama's foreign policy dream -- cordial relations with a Middle East tranquilized by "smart diplomacy" -- is in a death grapple with reality. His rhetorical writhings illustrate the perils of loquacity. He has a glutton's rather than a gourmet's appetite for his own rhetorical cuisine, and has talked America to the precipice of a fourth military intervention in the crescent that extends from Libya to Afghanistan.

Why Is The US Risking War In the Middle East To Save Muslims But Not Christians? http://politicaloutcast.com/2013/08/us-risking-war-middle-east-save-muslims-christians/#CUS0GEvxLzOBgvJH.99
Excerpt: The news out of Syria seems to indicate that the Syrian government used chemical weapons on their own people. That has Obama and US officials outraged. They are preparing to take military action against the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad. Russia has warned us not to use military force against the Assad regime and Iran has threatened all-out war if we do. (A damn good question. –Del)

The Israeli Spring. By Victor Davis Hanson
Excerpt: The Arab Spring has turned Israel's once-predictable adversaries into the chaotic state of a Sudan or Somalia. The old understandings betweenJerusalem and the Assad and Mubarak kleptocracies seem in limbo. Yet these tragic Arab revolutions swirling around Israel are paradoxically aiding it, both strategically and politically -- well beyond the erosion of conventional Arab military strength.

Britain's UKIP rejects joining Geert Wilders' plans for right-wing alliance. By Ewan Palmer
Excerpt: According to Euroactiv, Wilders had talked to the Belgian Vlaams Belang, the French National Front (FN), the Swedish Democrats, the Italian Northern League and the newly formed German Alternative. Wilders told Dutch public broadcaster NOS that he planned to form the coalition to bring together a party who are "against the European Union and against mass immigration". Wilders said he had not asked extremist and racist parties to join his movement, and cited Hungary's Jobbik and the British National Party (BNP) as beyond the pale.

Allen West: How MLK's Dream Got Derailed
Excerpt: When it comes to life, over the past two score years there have been some 13 million black babies aborted. The black community would be 36 percent greater save for this tragedy, this genocide. How many black babies will never experience King's dream, the American dream?

Confessed Child Rapist Gets 30 Days In Jail. By Jazz Shaw
Excerpt: How does this even happen in America?: "A Yellowstone County district judge Monday ordered a former Senior High teacher convicted of raping a 14-year-old female student who later committed suicide to spend 30 days in jail. Judge G. Todd Baugh sentenced Stacey Dean Rambold to 15 years in prison, with all but 31 days suspended, for sexual intercourse without consent."

Bishops say belief that influx of Latinos would restore American morality 'a delusion' By Dr. Susan Berry
Excerpt: Chaput said that U.S. Latinos are leaving the Roman Catholic Church “at a sobering rate.” Though about 70 percent of foreign-born Hispanics are Catholic, only 40 percent of third-generation Hispanics continue in the faith. Similarly, he reported that the abortion rate among Latinas is higher than the national average, and that Hispanic support for same-sex “marriage” increased from 31 percent in 2006 to 52 percent in 2012.

NYPD (secretly) designates mosques as terrorism organizations. By Adam Goldman and Matt Apuzzo
Excerpt: Designating an entire mosque as a terrorism enterprise means that anyone who attends prayer services there is a potential subject of an investigation and fair game for surveillance. Since the 9/11 attacks, the NYPD has opened at least a dozen "terrorism enterprise investigations" into mosques, according to interviews and confidential police documents. The TEI, as it is known, is a police tool intended to help investigate terrorist cells and the like.

Excerpt: Candidates should understand that the oft-repeated claim that nearly all scientists demand that something dramatic be done to stop global warming is not true. In fact, a large and growing number of distinguished scientists and engineers do not agree that drastic actions on global warming are needed.

Global Warming is 'no longer a planetary emergency' By Christopher Monckton
Excerpt: It’s official. The scare is over. The World Federation of Scientists, at its annual seminars on planetary emergencies, has been advised by its own climate monitoring panel that global warming is no longer a planetary emergency.

FBI Whistleblower Parkinson Claims FBI Pilots Use Government Facilities, Airplanes To Solicit Prostitutes. By Jonathan Wolfe
Excerpt: Former U.S. Marine and FBI agent LtCol. John C Parkinson is bringing a whistleblower case to the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB). Parkinson claims he was fired from his position as an FBI special agent in 2010 because he was attempting to expose the illegal sexual escapades of fellow agents Steven Broce and Andrew Marshall.

Hagel’s Navy. By Seth Cropsey
Excerpt: The SCMR raised the prospect that we will do to ourselves what our opponents in hot and cold wars have persistently failed at. Eliminating over 17 percent of the Marine Corps and 27 percent of the Navy’s carriers along with the surface and submarine combatants that accompany them would be a self-inflicted wound from which recovery would be difficult for the Marines and extremely difficult for the Navy.

The New Yorker Admits Fox News is more Balanced than MSNBC. By Heather Ginsberg
Excerpt: According to The New Yorker’s Kelefa Sanneh, who for 8 years was a critic at theNew York Times, profiled MSNBC and found that “Conservatives are far less visible on MSNBC than liberals are on Fox News”. And not only is MSNBC less likely to have Conservatives on their shows, but when they do, they tend to be Republicans who talk trash right-wingers.

Outrage Over Accused Fort Hood Shooter's $300K Pay Spurs Legislation
Excerpt: For the nearly four years since Army Maj. Nidal Hasan allegedly gunned down more than a dozen American servicemen, U.S. taxpayers have continued to pay his salary -- to the tune of around $300,000 so far. But new legislation, called the "Stop Pay for Violent Offenders Act" and introduced Monday in the House of Representatives, would authorize the military to suspend pay for Hasan and other members of the military for any capital or sex-related offense… (The VA can save a lot by denying to cover costs that ethically should be covered….Now that Hasan has been found guilty, anyone documenting where all the $$ paid to this criminal have gone? Perhaps the survivors and those who lost family members should sue him in common court to assess punitive damages to gain funds to pay their medical bills he incurred. –Barb)

Ben Carson: MLK Would Be Alarmed by Current State of Black America
Excerpt: Perhaps the biggest disappointment for King would be the wholesale adoption of a victim mentality that makes people feel that they are entitled to being cared for by others rather than working tirelessly to create wealth and opportunities for their progeny…. Finally, we should all remember the aspect of his dream in which he desired that people should be judged by their character and not by the color of their skin. In part, this means no one should assume that a black person would adhere to certain political orthodoxy any more so than a white person would. (Years ago, I was on a flight with a gentleman from Canada who had come down to see about expanding his company into the US. He told me had had decided to tell his superiors to keep their money and factory in Canada…that the US had a “problem” with its laborers, that the blacks he had encountered felt they were “owed something” and all “had a chip on their shoulders” rather than being nonracist and egalitarian. You know the type; they park in the handicapped spaces without permits and along the fire lanes at stores, because cracker laws don’t apply to them. –Barb)

Excerpt: Two weeks ago Obama's Black Attorney General Eric Holder said he's not happy that 50% of federal prisoners are Black. Accordingly, Holder plans to just let em out before their sentences are up. And he's directed federal district attorneys across the nation to go easy on Black thugs; he advises them to work with the network of liberal judges and ask for shorter sentences for those who make their living selling or using drugs, or robbery and so on.

Al Jazeera Comes to America: A foreign dictator’s media operation, right in your living room.
Excerpt: Perhaps start with the fact that Al Jazeera America, like its well-established Arabic-language sister station, Al Jazeera, is owned, lavishly funded, and operated by “the royal family of Qatar,” the politest way of describing the petroleum-rich emirate’s dynastic dictators — who also happen to be funders of Hamas, a U.S. government-designated terrorist group, and the Muslim Brotherhood. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani had been the tiny nation’s ruling emir for only a year when he founded Al Jazeera in 1996. (With such presentations as “Che Guevara as a ‘romantic, doomed hero’” and shows about “Sharia and Life,” pro-Muslim Brotherhood, now on your TV set, with approval of your government. –Barb. I expect them to be pretty fair and unbalanced at first, to draw in viewers. But I think most of their audience will be cannibalized from MSNBC. ~Bob.)

Miley Cyrus is the new Barack Obama
Excerpt: Neither Miley or Obama caused the decline in American culture, but they both seem comfortable in accelerating it. Rather than be role models, they seem more comfortable reveling in their celebrity status. …. For Obama, it is associating with everybody from gangster rappers Jay-Z and the “Pimp with the limp” rather than spread a positive message. Being “cool” takes precedence over using a powerful microphone to better the world.

Still more from Obama's insane spending department

Excerpt: In addition to the $313 million in mortgages for the West Bank, the US Government is also guaranteeing $110 million in loans to small and medium businesses in the West Bank. While the government should not be guaranteeing loans for any business, if it is that business should be in America owned by Americans, not in a mythical nation that hates America. …Not only does this area win the vote for the area most likely to be the epicenter of the next major Middle Eastwar, it is the home of massively corrupt government officials and terrorist organizations.

George Zimmerman Witness Can't Say Who Threw First Punch
Excerpt: Jeantel, a key prosecution witness in the racially charged trial, testified that she was talking on the phone with Martin when he told her a "creepy ass cracker" was following him. "Under oath, you created a lie and said you went to the hospital?" asked West. "Yes," responded Jeantel. She said she lied because she didn't want to see the body. (So Mrs. Zimmerman gets charged with perjury, but Rachel Jeantel, black, can lie under oath and no perjury charges are filed. Reportedly, jurors (and authorities?) “felt sorry” for this 19-year-old Miami high school senior, who is illiterate and could not read a transcript of her testimony or a letter she had purportedly written but then admitted someone had done it for her. –Barb)

Spoon in Underwear Saving Girls From Forced Marriage; Being taken abroad for a forced marriage is now so common in the UK that girls are being told to alert airport security to save themselves.
Excerpt: The U.K.-based charity Karma Nirvana is urging victims of forced marriage to put a spoon in their underwear before they go to the airport to be flown off to their family’s homelands to meet their new spouses. The spoon will cause metal detectors at the airport to beep; victims will be taken away from their parents to be searched, giving them one last chance to alert airport authorities that they are being forced into marriage.

Kim Jong-un's ex-lover 'executed by firing squad'
Excerpt: The reports in South Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper indicate that Hyon, a singer with the Unhasu Orchestra, was among those arrested on August 17 for violating domestic laws on pornography. All 12 were machine-gunned three days later, with other members of North Korea's most famous pop groups and their immediate families forced to watch. The onlookers were then sent to prison camps, victims of the regime's assumption of guilt by association, the reports stated. (If he had gassed them, would our Dear Leader attack? –TH. Boy, talk about being dumped hard! ~Bob.)

Judge in rape case criticized for light sentence, remarks about victim: Montana jurist gives a former teacher 30 days in jail for the rape of a 14-year-old student, and then calls the victim 'older than her chronological age.'
Excerpt: Outrage is particularly sharp in Billings, where the crime took place, because the girl committed suicide in 2010, just shy of her 17th birthday, as the criminal case was pending.

Muslim mob injures church leaders, choir members in Nigeria
Excerpt: A Muslim mob with knives and iron rods injured several members of an Anglican church in Nasarawa state on Aug. 17 over a dispute about less than one cent in change, area Christians said.

Swedish man charged for honking at mosque
Excerpt: Swedish prosecutors have decided to charge a 22-year-old man for honking his horn outside the Fittja mosque in Stockholm, citing his intention to disturb the Muslim congregation.

Black-on-White Violence: The Forgotten Victims. By Jack Kerwick
Excerpt: As the nation remembers Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, it should also note that while the self-appointed guardians of King’s legacy, the “anti-racists,” obsess over Paula Deen and liken Trayvon Martin to Emmet Till, they say nothingabout interracial violence when it involves black perpetrators andwhite victims. Below is a select list of interracial atrocities committed by blacks against whites. These forgotten victims are men and women, young and old. (If the left is going to play the race card on every instance of white on black violence, then it must be trumped by the twice as frequent black on white violence. ~Bob.)

Falsely crying racism for partisan gain is a good way to convince people that racism isn't a real thing any more.

Al Gore’s Global Warming Desperation. By Tom Blumer
Excerpt: Those who are wondering why Al Gore chose to publicly resurface in a Washington Post interview last Thursday with that paper’s ever-pliable Journolist founder Ezra Klein only need to look in three places.

Japan upgrades Fukushima nuclear leak to "serious incident," slams plant operator for late response
Japan's nuclear regulator on Wednesday upgraded the rating of a leak of radiation-contaminated water from a tank at its tsunami-wrecked nuclear plant to a "serious incident" on an international scale, and it castigated the plant operator for failing to catch the problem earlier.

‘White Bitch’ Brutally Beaten in Pittsburgh, Paging Eric Holder: The attorney general, a modern segregationist.
Excerpt: We get it, Eric. You can tell your friends at the Washington Post and New York Times that your Justice Department doesn’t discriminate because of the race of the victim, but we know the truth. We know that you treat some Americans as second-class citizens. And for that, you are more like one of the old segregationists than the crusader for justice you think you are.

Obamacare
The wife of a guy I work with finally has a job in her field with an insurance company. She is reviewing Obamacare to create a data package for the companies they serve, so they can explain changes to employees and make decisions for their programs. So her job is clearly created by Obama, and it's also part time. Oh...and did I mention that the job is temporary?—GS

Excerpt: The Washington Post has obtained a "top secret" budget document that for the first time details spending by the U.S. intelligence community. The document, provided by former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, shows that U.S. spy agencies have built an intelligence-gathering colossus since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, but remains unable to provide critical information to the president on a range of national security threats.

Letter to US Senators from a dying senior citizen
This has gone viral. Worth reading. ~Bob. Excerpt: I have calculated that all the money I have paid in income taxes my entire life cannot even keep the Senate barbershop open for one year! Only Heaven and a few tight-lipped actuarial types know what the Senate dining room costs the taxpayers. So please, enjoy your haircuts and meals on us. Last year, the president spent an estimated 1.4 $billion on himself and his family. The vice president spends $millions on hotels. They have had 8 vacations so far this year! And our House of Representatives and Senate have become America 's answer to the Saudi royal family. You have become the "perfumed princes and princesses" of our country.

If You Send Your Kid to Private School, You Are a Bad Person: A manifesto. By Allison Benedikt
On slate, calling Obama a bad person? ~Bob.

Death (certificates) took holiday in wake of bankruptcy filing
http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20130829/METRO01/308290046#ixzz2dNdZZ8ua
Excerpt: The city did stop issuing certified copies of birth and death certificates on July 23, days after the July 18 bankruptcy filing. That day, a nervous paper vendor demanded cash — and the city wanted to do business as usual, on credit. FYI: In bankrupt and frequently bizarre Detroit, dying is easy. It’s proving you are dead that’s hard.

1. Can someone please tell Obama that his "trickle down gov't" isn't working for us blacks!? We're getting the "down," but not the trickle.2. Everybody that's my color, isn't my kind.

1. My grandma lived in the Jim Crow South in the depression. Worked two different jobs for White people and never asked for handouts. 2. FYI—I worked a crappy min wage job in HS and guess what I learned? The wages SUCK and you can’t live off of it. I didn’t strike—I left.

Excerpt: For these diseases the additional toll is estimated at 1 million preventable deaths a year, or around 2,700 per day, mostly among children younger than 5.

Excerpt: Swimp blamed the woes of many black Americans on the community having “morally surrendered.”… He pointed to the breakdown of the black family and prevalent abortion of black babies as examples of moral surrender.
