General News and Comment

How the War on Poverty Has Hurt American Marriage Rates. By Robert Rector
Excerpt: It is no accident that the collapse of marriage in America largely began with the War on Poverty and the proliferation of means-tested welfare programs that it fostered. When the War on Poverty began, only a single welfare program—Aid to Families with Dependent Children —assisted single parents. Today, dozens of programs provide benefits to families with children, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, the Women, Infants and Children food program, Supplemental Security Income, food stamps, child nutrition programs, public housing and Section 8 housing, and Medicaid. (And single parenthood is highly correlated with...poverty! According to a recent study, 20% of the kids who grow up in one-parent homes spend their lives in poverty. Only 2% of those who grow up in two-parent families do. ~Bob)

An Uber for Education: Our problems today are massive. We need solutions to match. By Jim Geraghty
Excerpt: Americans are depressed. Their deep-rooted pessimism about the future may or may not put a Republican in the White House in 2016. But seriously shaking this gloom will probably take more than the usual conservative policy proposals of tax reform and simplification, a defense buildup, regulatory reform, and so on. History demonstrates to us that giant, rapid, positive change is possible, in both the political and the economic realms. (Certainly the education establishment is in need of a drastic overhaul. They are hide-bound with political correctness, unable to use common sense to over come bureaucratic rules, teaching from fads rather than basics, and spending more money every year for worse results. But I think the country is too far gone towards fiscal, political and economic collapse for a change in education, with a long time line for results, to fix it. Since I published my book things have gotten worse by the week. I don't know what will save the Republic. I ask God to preserve our country every day, as it may be beyond man to do so. ~Bob. The Coming Collapse of the American Republic All royalties go to a charity to help wounded veterans.)

LtCol. Peters: Military Appalled at Administration's 'Incompetence.' By Wanda Carruthers
Excerpt: "We've a president so arrogant, an administration so arrogant, they think they know how to run military tactical affairs; not just strategic, but tactical affairs, better than military professionals. "Everyone is appalled at the incompetence, the willful incompetence of this White House," Peters, a retired Army Lt. Colonel, told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" on Monday.

Do We Really Understand Unconventional Warfare? By David S. Maxwell
Excerpt: In the 21st Century we are more likely to experience kinds of warfare for which scholars have been hard pressed to find a name. Scholars have used many names including irregular warfare, hybrid warfare, 4th Generation Warfare, and of course the post 9-11 rediscovery of insurgency and counterinsurgency. Yet despite all these various names the one overarching form of warfare that encompasses all is unconventional warfare (UW). However, the fundamental question is do we understand unconventional warfare? And if not, why not? (Well, for sure we NEED to understand UW, because it's hard to defeat an enemy you don't understand. Understanding them tells you what strategies and resources you need to defeat them, with the wrong strategies and insufficient resources all you do is prolong a messy fight, and that just doesn't work anymore. --Del. Great book on insurgent warfare: A Question of Command. By Mark Moyar.

Worth Reading: Here’s Why Women in Combat Units is a Bad Idea. By Anna Simons
Excerpt: Three problems plague the debate over whether all combat units should finally be opened to women. (Actually, there are four problems: The fourth and most important being the likelihood that there will be no real debate, something that I hope this article will help to mitigate). Most career soldiers and officers I know believe the integration of women into Special Forces teams, and into SEAL, Ranger and Marine infantry platoons, is already a forgone conclusion. From their perspective, politicians in uniform (namely, top brass) don’t have the intestinal fortitude to brook the vocal minority in Congress – and the country, really – who think mainstreaming women into ground combat units is a good idea. (Here is another woman arguing very persuasively against women in all combat units. She's done an even better job at it than some of the other articles by women on this subject. But the damn PC pressure on this is so consistent and so high that I really worry that this push to put women into infantry units is near unstoppable. It will take either a bunch of generals resigning in protest, or an eventual unmistakable disaster with a mixed unit to slow this down. And unfortunately, the former is unlikely, since most of the high ranking officers who still own their testicles have been forced into retirement one way or another. --Del)

Democrats to Obama: You broke the party, now fix it. By Edward-Isaac Dovere
Excerpt: Enough, Donna Brazile told White House political director David Simas the day after the midterms. Democrats are in worse shape than when President Barack Obama came into office — the number of seats they have in Congress, the number of governors, a party approval rating that’s fallen behind Republicans for the first time in recent history, enthusiasm, energy. The White House, Brazile said when she came to meet with Simas, has got to focus for the next two years on getting the party into better shape, and Obama’s the best and most effective person to get out the message.

Term limit supporters add to ranks in Congress. By Catalina Camia
Excerpt: The folks behind term limits for Congress are happy with the outcome of recent midterm elections. By the count of U.S. Term Limits, at least 13 politicians elected earlier this month signed the pledge requiring them to co-sponsor a constitutional amendment limiting House members to three terms (six years total) and senators to two terms (12 years).

Gun News

Israel to ease gun controls after attack
Excerpt: Israel is to ease controls on carrying weapons for self-defence after a deadly Palestinian attack on a Jerusalem synagogue, Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch said on Tuesday. "In the coming hours, I will ease restrictions on carrying weapons," he said in remarks broadcast on public radio, indicating it would apply to anyone with a licence to carry a gun, such as private security guards and off-duty army officers. (Though anti-gun folks claim there other reasons, the statistics are that states with concealed carry have lower crime rates. Even in Illinois, murder dropped in Chicago after the courts forced concealed carry on them. ~Bob)

Indiana gun shop owner starts Facebook page listing gun free businesses (VIDEO)
Excerpt: Steve Ellis, owner of Top Guns in Terre Haute, started No Guns = No Money last week, a Facebook page dedicated to listing businesses that ban guns. The page quickly gained popularity and more than 1,200 “likes” in just over a week.

Race Card News

Shafiq Abdussabur: Atmosphere of inclusion must be America’s goal
Interesting comment at end of article: These are nice words, but they are meaningless. White America has created a nation in which it is actually illegal to discriminate on the basis of race, enforced both in the criminal code and with civil action. Heck, to be branded a racist is seen as a badge of shame. There is not a corporation or university in the land which is not frantically engaged in affirmative action to achieve a statistically-correct racial balance. The President of the United States is a black man. So don't tell us that white America has not done its part. Tell me what black America has done about a culture which embraces multi-generational dependence on government hand-outs, epidemic gun violence, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, single parent families and a complete and total disregard for the value of education?

The Ferguson Days of Rage. By Ben Shapiro
Excerpt: "When facts become secondary to emotion, truth dies. And a society that doesn’t value truth cannot survive."

Worth Reading: As Sharpton Rose, So Did His Unpaid Taxes. By Russ Buettner
Excerpt: The Rev. Al Sharpton, who came to prominence as an imposing figure in a track suit, shouting indignantly at the powerful, stood quietly on a stage last month at the Four Seasons restaurant, his now slender frame wrapped in a finely tailored suit, as men in power lined up to exclaim their admiration for him. ... Mr. Sharpton has regularly sidestepped the sorts of obligations most people see as inevitable, like taxes, rent and other bills. Records reviewed by The New York Times show more than $4.5 million in current state and federal tax liens against him and his for-profit businesses.

‘Bracing’ for Violence in Ferguson: Encouraged by Sharpton and other agitators, too many see rioting as a black entitlement. By Heather Mac Donald
Excerpt: These depressing precautions are considered normal. Fifty years after the cataclysmic riots of the 1960s, rioting is still regarded as virtually a black entitlement. No one is “bracing,” in press parlance, for white riots or police violence should Officer Wilson be indicted. Nor were there preparations for Asian riots last month in Los Angeles as a jury heard a murder case against a 22-year-old thug from South Central L.A., who, along with an accomplice, had shot two Chinese engineering students attending the University of Southern California in 2012.

Obamacare/Government Healthcare News

Can't help wondering whether all those leaks about Gruber and O care were deliberate, arriving right at the start of the lame duck Congress. By the time the next Congress is seated, it will all be stale and forgotten. Just like all those stories about Monica a few months ago - turn it into old news before Hill announces her run. Now where did I put my tinfoil hat? --Tom H.

Worth Sharing: All of Jonathan Gruber’s Controversial Comments in a Single Two-Minute Video
The link takes you to a two minute video that is truly priceless. It combines all of Dr. Gruber's fantastic, contemptuous quotes about how the pass the Bill through torturous language, lack of transparency, and of course the stupidity of the American voter, with quotes from people who at one time claimed they never heard of him, but at earlier times mentioned him in the most glowing terms as a wonderful asset to the government. And I haven't seen the breakdown, but the tally now is that he's made several million dollars from all his "contributions" to the federal and state governments. Wow! See, lying, cheating, and stealing DO pay off, really, really well. I wonder who's going to be signing up for his classes now, and how many other institutions will be lining up to hire him as a consultant. Then again, with the millions he's made already, what does he have to worry about? Really, truly disgusting. But we're going to hang this on the neck of the Democrats forever. --Del

Guess Who Obamacare's Biggest Fans Are? Insurance Companies!
Excerpt: Obamacare has allowed the health insurance companies to make even more money off of us as they force us off of affordable plans and into more expensive ones. They are also making more money off of us by taking millions of dollars from the government to cover the poor and middle-class with those same expensive plans, instead of the low-cost plans they used to have.

True, this: Jonah Goldberg on FNC: ‘Transmission Belt of Liberal Journalists’ Reaffirmed Gruber’s Mendacity. By Brent Baker
Excerpt: "In a lot of ways, this spectacle represents not just everything’s that’s wrong with the Obama administration, it’s everything wrong with liberalism and a lot that’s wrong with America itself. You’ve got this guy who is pretending to be an objective independent analyst, who’s got huge amounts of skin in the game in terms of money he can make off of consulting fees, but also of the prestige being involved and the speeches he could do which haven’t been tallied into these numbers -- anyway, it’s millions of dollars – being touted around through a transmission belt of liberal journalists, who all are all pretending to be objective analysts too, quoting each other, reaffirming each other, all with the help of the White House which went along with this soup to nuts – a process which this guy says was all about lies and misleading the American people. And then when caught about it, the same administration tries to dismiss him as if he was just some sort of random White House intruder. The whole thing stinks."

President Crafted Obamacare Deception With Gruber At White House Meeting
Excerpt: President Obama personally crafted a major Obamacare deception with Jonathan Gruber at one of Gruber’s numerous White House meetings, according to a 2012 Gruber interview with PBS.( But at this point I think the whole Gruber episode is well enough known, and I have seen the total of just under $6MM he collected in six years of helping various government agencies with health care legislation. And that's not all of his fees, others are known to have been earned, but have not been released specifically so far. Oh yeah, and there's his professor's salary too, but that hardly counts against this other income. But Obama and Pelosi and Reid and others now can't seem to recall ever working with him.... amazing how bad memories get once you're drunk with power. --Del)

Stupidity Reconsidered: Election Proved Americans Aren't Fooled by Gruber and Obama. By Dr. Ben Carson
Excerpt: What is truly disturbing is the fact that our government is willing to engage in the purposeful deception of the populace in order to thrust its secretive agenda onto an unsuspecting populace and a sycophantic mainstream media. As I have said many times before, Obamacare was never about health care; it was about government control and wealth redistribution. (A majority has always opposed Obamacare from day one--but the Undemocratic Party doesn't care what people want. ~Bob)

Downing Street Gruber. By Ann Coulter
Excerpt: Isn't Jonathan Gruber worse than the Downing Street memo? Gruber, who was paid half a million dollars to design Obamacare, is on tape bragging about how the Democrats relied on "the stupidity of the American voter" to pass that law. Which, ironically, was sort of a stupid thing to say on camera. By now there are so many tapes of Gruber explaining how Obamacare fooled stupid Americans that they're being released as a boxed set in time for Christmas. (Ann does a great job on this, both in reviewing what Gruber said and who complimented his abilities in the past, and the truly total sellout of the media on the whole story. They have gotten to be absolutely disgusting in their bias and manipulation of the news. --Del)

Undocumented Democrat News

His Own Words: Obama Said He Doesn't Have Authority For Executive Amnesty 22 Times. By Katie Pavlich
Excerpt: House Speaker John Boehner, who warned the President shortly after the 2014 midterm elections that acting alone on immigration would "poison the well," has taken notice of Obama's past statements. After some research, his office found President Obama directly claimed 22 times he couldn't take executive action on immigration because he doesn't have the authority. (Sure, but all of Obama's statements and pledges come with an expiration date. All of them. ~Bob)

Worth Reading: A slippery slope on immigration. By Ruth Marcus, Washington Post
Excerpt: Every Democrat should be nervous about President Obama’s plan for unilateral action on immigration reform. Not because of the impact on an already gridlocked Congress, or because it risks inflaming an increasingly hostile public. Democrats should be nervous about the implications for presidential power, and the ability of a future Republican president to act on his or her own.

"You're Greener than Gore" News

Democrat job killers: Keystone pipeline bill fails in Senate
Excerpt: A bill to approve the Keystone XL oil pipeline failed in the Senate on Tuesday by just one vote, in a setback not only for the energy project but the politically imperiled Democratic senator who pushed the legislation. The bill failed on a 59-41 vote. It needed 60 to pass. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., had resurrected the legislation ahead of a tough runoff election next month, hoping to show her Washington clout and put Congress on record in support of the pipeline -- even though the White House indicated President Obama would consider vetoing.

“Senate Democrats Assault on the Working Class”
Excerpt: Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today on the U.S. Senate vote regarding the Keystone XL Pipeline: Today’s failure of the U.S. Senate to authorize the Keystone XL Pipeline is a vote against all construction workers, a vote to keep good, middle-class jobs locked out of reach and a vote to continue to rely on nations that hate America for our energy.

Tweet from Popehat‏@Popehat

Tribe: Keystone vote is ‘act of war’
Excerpt: The president of a South Dakota-based Native American tribe says it will be an “act of war” if Congress authorizes construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline. (We have casinos. who needs jobs. ~Bob)

All 50 States Hit Freezing Temperatures or Below. By Wynton Hall
Excerpt: All 50 U.S. states, including President Barack Obama’s home state of Hawaii, dropped to freezing or below on Tuesday, reports the National Weather Service. (Grocery clerk asked me, "Paper or plastic?" I said whatever would hurry global warming the most. ~Bob)

Important: Buffett-owned power company sues to block data on wind-farm bird slaughter. By Timothy P. Carney
Excerpt: Pacificorp — an energy company owned by Warren Buffett's holding company, Berkshire Hathaway — is suing Obama's Interior Department. The surprising reason: Interior is going to follow the Freedom of Information Act and disclose to an Associated Press reporter how many birds are killed by Pacificorp's wind farms. Pacificorp is suing to block the disclosure. (Remember when Rachel Carson wrote Silent Spring, and Progressives were all hot and bothered to "Save the Birds" by banning DDT, which gives us West Nile, bedbugs and, worst of all, the horrible deaths of millions of third world black, brown and yellow kids from Malaria? Now you know what the environmentalists were saving the birds for! ~Bob)

Religion of Peace News

BBC To Israeli Minister: "Please Don't Show Picture Of Synagogue Terror Victim"
Excerpt: Tuesday, Israel's Jewish Home Minister Naftali Bennett was being interviewed by the BBC about the terrorist attack in a Jerusalem synagogue. When Bennett tried to humanize the massacre by showing a picture of one of the victims, the interviewer said, "We don't want to see the picture," and asked the minister to take the picture down. (They show pictures of dead Muslims--but dead Jews might make people see them as human, you know. ~Bob)

Worth Reading: Murdered, Because They Were Jews. By Tarek Fatah
Excerpt: Four rabbis in an act of worship, in their house of God, slaughtered in the name of Allah. And if the savagery of the act was not enough of a shock, one response from a Muslim on Twitter was equally gruesome. ... As a Muslim who has spoken all my life for the rights of the Palestinians to a state of their own, I was left holding my head in despair and shame.

3 Americans were slaughtered today, but we must remember that the real victims are the people openly celebrating their deaths right now. --- Obama has spent more time lecturing Israel on where they should let Jews live than demanding Palestinians stop murdering innocent people.

excerpt: A recently issued report on the status of Afghanistan by the US Department of Defense has described al Qaeda as being primarily confined to "isolated areas of northeastern Afghanistan." Egyptian civilians killed in North Sinai clashes
Excerpt: Ten people have been killed in overnight fighting between Islamist militants and soldiers in the north of Egypt's Sinai peninsula, officials say. At least seven civilians died when mortars struck the home of a Bedouin family in the village of Negah Shabana, near the border with the Gaza Strip.

Excerpt: Netanyahu, who ordered the killers’ homes razed, also demanded more global outrage over the slaughter. “The world sees the massacre but doesn’t demand the Palestinians to stop the wild incitement against Israel, which is the root of the conflict. I want to see shock and sincere abhorrence of these murderous acts,’’ Netanyahu said.

Kenyan city of Mombasa hit by killings after mosque raids
Excerpt: At least three people have been stabbed to death by rampaging youths in the Kenyan city of Mombasa, officials say. The attacks came hours after police raided two mosques they accuse of having links with militant Islamists in neighbouring Somalia. ... Police said they had also seized a pistol and a cache of ammunition, including grenades, in the raids. They say the mosques have links with the Somali militant Islamist group, al-Shabab, and have been used to recruit and train militants and store weapons.
