Random Thoughts for May 2020

Random Thoughts for May 2020
By Robert A. Hall
Feel free to post or forward.

Note to friends on Facebook. I do not do messenger; I just delete them.

Democrat governors: Overreacting, overreaching, and overbearing.

How many of the left politicians and media bashing Trump over hydroxychloroquine would suddenly demand the drug if they tested positive for COVID-19?

Coronavirus has revealed two things. 1. The totalitarian impulse is very strong on the left. 2. A majority of the people are now passive enough to go along with any orders from “authorities.”

Politicians need to stop playing doctor and let real doctors decide if a drug is effective and worth the risk. All drugs have side effects. I’m on Prednisone. Nasty side effects. I had cataracts, a tremor, still have diabetes and osteoporosis. There are others I haven’t had. But if some politician had banned it in 2013 because some other politician thought it was good, I’d be dead.

Contrary to reports, no organization that is a 501©3 charity like the Kennedy Center may make political donations. That does not apply to their officers, board members and donors, of course.

When Corona virus struck, Democrats sprang into action, making sure the Kennedy center got a big grant, PBS got a big grant, and the Congress Critters got huge pay rases. We should all be grateful to them for this help in the war on COVID!

There is nothing like good military training to instill self-discipline in a person. There is nothing like bad military training to wreck a life.

I wonder how many COVID deaths in NYC can be traced, step by step by step, back to people who followed the mayor and his administration advice to ignore the virus and go to the parade in Chinatown? How many in San Francisco who followed Pelosi’s advice? We will never know.

This lock down is terrible. I haven't had bat for dinner in weeks.

As I get older, opening packages is harder, especially pill blister packs and bottles. I call foul imprecations on the manufacturers’ heads!

You are as likely to see a spending bill coming out of Congress not packed with pork, as to see unicorns dancing on your lawn.

Dawdling is expandable to fill any available time.

If Trump recommend that COVID-19 patients breathe, our governor would ban breathing.

Politicians get reelected by promising pork—paid for by us—to interest group to get their votes.

Shouldn’t “a while” be a compound word?

Don’t worry if someone threatens you. People who really mean to do you harm will act without warning.

I have severe osteo-arthritis in my right hip, makes it painful to walk, especially painful to get in and out of cars & bed, and to put on pants. Need my wife or a sock helper to put the right one on. This is clearly Trump's fault. I don't know why, but I'm sure if I tell the Democrats or media, they will tell me.

The mind grows annoyed when the body won’t.

I think they should form an, “Almost Joined the Marine Corps League.” They could hold reunions, tell war stories about how close they came, get tee shirts and ball caps.

I think there may be a lot less church-going, but a lot more praying.

Shut up and drink your Kool-Aid.

No group that makes political contributions should receive tax dollars.

New insults: “She lies like a reporter.” “He’s as vile as Nancy Pelosi.”

Anyone who has made a fortune after a lifelong career in politics should be very suspect.

No help to sanctuary cities!

To those who hold the State as God, independent thinking and self-reliance are the blackest sins.

I sometimes have imaginary conversations with my Marine Drill Instructors, giving them an update on my life and an account of my actions. I hope they would be proud of me.

I think my motto should be, “Persevering in the Face of Stupidity,” Often, alas, my own.

The old saying, “That was then, this is now,” takes on a more poignant meaning when you are old.

After this is over, the fakes who wore military uniforms will now be wearing scrubs.

I hated it at the time, but I’m so glad that my third and fourth grade teachers required me to memorize the multiplication tables. I use them almost daily; the numbers just jump in my head. Kids who aren’t learning the multiplication tables are being deprived of a tool that would help them all their lives.

Ad on TV said, “We’re not in the car business, we’re in the people business.” Went by to get a slave to clean our house, turned out they were in the car business after all. So many ads are full of feelgood BS!

The VA gave me compression socks because my right foot is swollen. Painful struggle to get on that foot, as I have osteo arthritis in my right hip. I wonder what next indignity old age will heap on me? (Never mind, now I know. Fungus infection in my old lung.)

How is a “gentle reminder” different from a regular reminder?

About 10.5% of Americans are diabetic, and it’s growing. Smart food manufacturers will start making more sugar free stuff like cookies, candy, and backed goods, and more “no sugar added” ice cream, etc. Why miss that market?

“Almost,” “Tried,” “Meant to,” and “Forgot,” garner no rewards.

Americans will be delighted if a cure for coronavirus is founds. Except Democrats. They will only be delighted if it’s not a cure Trump recommended. Or if it’s expensive and made by a pro-left firm.

I learned “social distancing” in high school!

People will hold to a beloved belief in the face of all facts.

“We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means; it is an end.” George Orwell, 1984.

Tell illegals their stimulus checks are at the local ICE office.

Some Lenin Quotes that may sound familiar: “It is true that liberty is precious - so precious that it must be rationed” “There are no morals in politics; there is only expedience. A scoundrel may be of use to us just because he is a scoundrel.” “A lie told often enough becomes truth” “The press should be not only a collective propagandist and a collective agitator, but also a collective organizer of the masses” “One man with a gun can control 100 without one.”

I must be a pretty special person, because both in my email inbox and on Facebook, there are always so many people wanting to save me money.

"We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force." –Ayn Rand

Procrastination is its own punishment.

Land ‘O Lakes butter is racist. They removed the picture honoring Indian women from its package because some anti-Indian bigot complained.

If it wasn’t for double standards the Democrats wouldn’t have any standards at all.

What in the platform of today’s Democrats would dismay a member of the Communist Party USA from the 1950s or 1960s?

Greed lends itself to flowery and noble covers, but it is still greed.

Make good choices. I have interviewed over 315 veterans for the VA’s My Life, My Story project. Those who made good choices have had wonderful lives. Those who made bad choices about smoking, drugs, alcohol, education, careers, or wives/partners have had miserable lives.

“Action springs not from thought, but from a readiness for responsibility.” -- Dietrich Bonhoeffer

"Tolerance of intolerance is cowardice." —Ayaan Hirsi Ali

My dad, Robert R. Hall, after he retired: “I get up in the morning with nothing to do, and by the time I go to bed, it’s only half done!”

I wish I had the money to give to every charity and political campaign I think deserves support. Alas, just an average Joe, not Bill Gates.

No politician can admit a mistake. The opposition would savage him/her. And the media as well, if it fit their agenda.

Too often the evildoers finish their lives full of honors and riches. One hopes their will be justice in the next world.

The American Right has a philosophy, while the American Left has only an enemies list. –Kevin Williamson

In round numbers, Hitler killed 40 million, Stalin killed 60 million, and Mao killed 80 million. But many survived. Any many will survive the coming leftist authoritarian state. But not those like me who are old, or weak, or refuse to be enslaved.

If Trump says obesity is bad for you, buy McDonald’s stock.

Every time I open a medicine package, I hope the Tylenol Killer is burning in hell.

With the accusations against Joe Biden, #MeToo has gone to #WhoShe.

My morning exercise routine now is putting on the compression socks the VA wants me to wear. Don’t laugh. It’s as exhausting and painful as PT ever was.

COVID has released the petty tyrant in many politicians. If a governor or mayor orders a lockdown, their salary should cease until it is lifted.

To get an idea, I ran our retirement fund number in January of 2016. Then I deducted our monthly draws for expenses since then and the car we bought granddaughter Britnye. Even with the market collapse, we are about $140k better off than we were on 1/16.

Get the collection! My “Random Thoughts” from 2009 through July, 2013 are collected in this book: The Old Jarhead's Journal: Random Thoughts on Life, Liberty, and Leadership by Robert A. Hall
