This
excellent book is a biography/autobiography of a Marine icon, detailing his
rise from Second Lieutenant to four-star Marine General. It is also a
leadership manual that should be read by every military officer. His hands-on,
delegate responsibility, encourage different thinking, release initiative leadership
style would be of great value to business and organization leaders as well. It
is also a history of our wars in the Middle East, from the Gulf War to Iraq and
Afghanistan today. Mattis is not afraid to name names pointing how senior
military and political leadership caused much needless bloodshed among American
troops and civilians in the countries involved. One wishes his advice had been
followed in several cases where it was ignored. There
are wonderful anecdotes as well, as when he asked a Marine squad engaged in
Iraq what they were doing. “Taking the fun out of fundamental, sir,” the squad
leader replied. Bing
West is also a great Marine and fine author, always worth reading. I especially
recommend “The village, and “The March Up.” I
highly recommend “Call Sign Chaos.”
