Political News and Conservative Comment--a big lot today

The Philosophy of the Old Jarhead Blog

The Old Jarhead is a blog of political news and conservative opinion, that has had almost 1,300,000 page views since founded in October of 2008, is read in many counties (Iran? Indonesia? Russia? Go figure.) and gets up to 4,000 page views a week. Plus I throw in some humor and human interest pieces that catch my attention for seasoning. I try to include foreign sources and info you won’t get in the MSM, but I often use links to pieces in the Washington Post, New York Times, Politico, Reuters and other left-of-center sources. No one is required to read it, or any of the links. A majority of the pieces are sent to me by readers, for which I’m grateful, others come from newsfeeds I subscribe to. I get some from Twitter, but often don’t have time to look at my feeds there. I stop sending the link to people who become nasty or too angry. I used to forward political items, but was sending too many e-mails to my list, so a few years ago, I started collecting them on the blog to access in one place. I use maybe 50% of the conservative pieces sent me, probably less than 5% of the liberal opinion sent, usually to illustrate their views. Readers who don’t like that are welcome to start their own blogs. Blogs are free and so is speech in America right now, despite leftist efforts to outlaw “hate speech” they disagree with and Islamist efforts to outlaw criticism of Islam, while retaining the right to describe other religions in vile terms. I try to avoid items that will turn off thoughtful centrists and leftists or low-information independents, including “red meat” pieces with intemperate language or wild speculation, conspiracy theories with no supporting facts and silly distractions like the so-called “birther” issue (but I don’t always succeed). I predicted correctly five years ago the “birther” thing was going nowhere, was a huge waste of time and resources, and played into the hands of the left, much as the impeachment of Bill Clinton did in the 1990s. (I said so at the time.) I do include some things I don’t agree with that I think readers might find of interest. Readers are requested to read all items critically and with skepticism—just like a newspaper! Readers who send formatted pieces (title, link, and a fair-use excerpt of no more than three sentences unless the piece is very short, than fewer) to tartanmarine(at)gmail.com have a higher chance of my using them than people who just send a link. I often include thoughtful comments from contributors. (Tell me if you want you full name used.) A piece without a link has a much lower chance of being used—it depends on how interesting it is and how much time I have right then to search for it, and my time is limited right now due to managing the lung transplant I received on December 23, 2013, which has developed complications. I understand if you don’t have the time to format or even to find a link—please understand I don't either. There are no ads on my blog, no fees and I receive no income from it. Now that I've retired, that might need to change, but for now, that’s how it is. I do promote my books, with the royalties going to charity. Thanks for reading and contributing. ~Bob.

General News and Comment

Two charts worth seeing

Book Recommendation: The New Vichy Syndrome: Why European Intellectuals Surrender to Barbarism by Theodore Dalrymple
Written under the pen name Theodore Dalrymple, whose great book Life at the Bottom I consider a must-read. In The New Vichy Syndrome, British Psychiatrist Anthony Daniels turns his penetrating insights and eviscerating wit to Europe, including the Muslim problem, the European Union and the general "miserabilist" world view of modern Europeans. He draws the surprising conclusion that the growth of the Muslim population is not a threat unless Europe allows it to be, by defending the values of their societies against the minority of Islamists and not protecting the majority of Muslims who want to live peacefully in a modern society from the violent ones. Of course, he recognizes that the will to defend values--or values themselves--may not be present in most Europeans today, but he says the Muslim problem is a problem in us, due to a lack of courage. The misearbilist (his fine word) world view adopted by too many of his fellow Europeans he traces back to the devastating history of the conflicts in the 20th century and the los by Europe of world leadership--or even importance. Europeans went from being proud of their history and accomplishments to being contemptuous of it. Daniels finds both unremitting positive or negative views of the past equally in error; balance is needed. On the EU, he heaps contempt. Take this quote about EU bureaucrats: "You can spot a feeder at the European trough... a mile off: having for a long time viewed the world exclusively through the window of an official limousine, having lunched and dined heavily for many years (never at his own expense, of course), and having developed a special langue de bois in which streams of grammatically formed verbiage are carefully studded with words of positive connotation that makes it difficult to argue against him, he has developed the gray, immobile, slab-faced countenance of members of the former Soviet Politburo. Alas, it seems there are a large number of volunteers--mainly mediocrities, of course--for this kind of life. It seems to them eminently preferable to earning a living." Could we not write the same about many of the parasites living off us in Washington? He has equally pointed words for many politicians, Americans included. This book is well worth reading.

Worth Reading: Revisionists Against America. By Thomas Sowell
Excerpt: He recalled how, as someone growing up in China, he had rejoiced when he heard of the bombing, knowing that it could deliver his people from the horrors inflicted on them by the Japanese. That, of course, was not the politically correct response, as he soon discovered from the backlash, hostility and ostracism that eventually culminated in his leaving the school. The anointed do not want anyone upsetting their vision. When they say "diversity," this is not what they have in mind. (I'm reading Barbarians Inside the Gates, a 2001 collection of Dr. Sowell's columns from the 1990s. All so far are excellent and still relevant. I will link to some of the better ones when I can find them on line. ~Bob

Important: Federal judge rules DC ban on gun carry rights unconstitutional. By Emily Miller
Excerpt: A federal judge in the District of Columbia on Saturday overturned the city’s total ban on residents being allowed to carry firearms outside their home in a landmark decision for gun-rights activists.

Hillary Quote?
Have not verified. ~Bob. Excerpt: “My accomplishments as Secretary of State? Well, I'm glad you asked! My proudest accomplishment in which I take the most pride, mostly because of the opposition it faced early on, you know… the remnants of prior situations and mindsets that were too narrowly focused in a manner whereby they may have overlooked the bigger picture and we didn’t do that and I’m proud of that. Very proud. I would say that’s a major accomplishment.” - Hillary Clinton 11 March 2014 Does anyone have any idea what in the name of common sense she just said ?

Gas station clerk with MMA training surprises thieves
Excerpt: He was behind the counter when he noticed his co-worker returning to the store after a run to the bank. Dissanyake saw two men jump out of an SUV and attack his co-worker. They were trying to grab the bank bag he was carrying. The store's surveillance cameras were recording as Dissanayake ran outside and kicked one of the alleged robbers in the face.

US 11th Circuit Court of Appeals Rules in Favor of the State of Florida and Law-Abiding Gun Owners Over Activist Doctors and the Gun Control Lobby
Excerpt: The United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit has ruled that doctors do not have the right to ask patients if they own a firearm when unnecessary to a patient's care. This ruling is a significant defeat for the gun control lobby and its allies. The Florida chapters of the American Academies of Pediatrics and American College of Physicians, along with a number of other groups and individuals backed by the anti-gun community, filed this lawsuit against the State of Florida after Governor Rick Scott signed a bill backed by the National Rifle Association in 2011.

Eleanor Holmes Norton: ‘You don’t have a right to know’ about everything Obama administration is up to
Excerpt: Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton played down the importance of government transparency during a House hearing Friday, speaking out against Republican-led attempts to compel a White House official to appear before the Government and Oversight Committee. “You don’t have a right to know everything in a separation-of-powers government, my friend,” Holmes Norton, the nonvoting delegate that represents WashingtonD.C., said. The White House official in question, David Simas, leads the White House Office of Political Strategy and Outreach. (Communist regimes believe Daddy knows best and citizens are peasants with no brain and cannon fodder, slave labor, if you will, revenue bases. They spoon feed regurgitated dribbles of "news" as "that's all you need to know" knowing that knowledge is power. However, as with the USSR, you cannot conceal knowledge from mankind--either of the free world on the other side of the then Iron Curtain or that there IS a God and He does exist and you cannot expunge him from a society by decreeing atheism, although US seems intent on this or Caliphate formation. Man has intelligence unless stoned or drunk....even with time and hindsight, it will make its presence known to those who attempt to manipulate and control. --Barb)

Tentative Deal Reached on VA Reform.
Excerpt: The chairmen of the House and Senate Veterans Affairs committees have reached a tentative agreement on a plan to improve veterans' healthcare after they lashed out at each other over their competing bills late last week. Rep. Jeff Miller, a Florida Republican, and Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent who caucuses with Democrats, said Sunday they'll have a news conference Monday to talk about a compromise plan to fix a veterans' health program scandalized by long patient wait times and falsified records covering up delays. (How much this means in regard to fixing the real problem of that "toxic culture" in the top levels is unknown. But at least it's getting a lot of attention in Congress, maybe something positive will result. --Del)

Should the £26 Indian Smart Phone Worry Apple?
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/mobile-phones/10995383/Should-the-26-Indian-smartphone-worry-Apple.html
Excerpt: But the real draw of the handset is its unprecedentedly low cost – at just £26 you could buy 21 of them for the cost of even the cheapest iPhone 5S from Apple. That makes its shortcomings seem rather insignificant. Recent research from IDC showed that the Indian smartphone market saw 186 per cent growth in the year to June, and more than three quarters of those were for low-end devices costing less than $200 (£120). A similar picture is emerging in other developing countries, and companies are quickly waking up to that potential. (Free markets and innovation! ~Bob)

Worth Reading: The War That Broke a Century: A king, a kaiser, a czar—all were undone as they realized what they had unleashed with World War I. By Peggy Noonan ·
Excerpt: History still isn’t sure and can never be certain of the exact number of casualties. Christopher Clark, in “The Sleepwalkers” (2013), puts it at 20 million military and civilian deaths and 21 million wounded. The war unleashed Bolshevism, which brought communism, which in time would kill tens of millions more throughout the world. (In 1997, “The Black Book of Communism,” written by European academics, put the total number at a staggering 94 million.)

Michelle Nunn’s Campaign Plan: A leaked document gives the public a look. By Eliana Johnson
Excerpt: Michelle Nunn can come across as a “lightweight,” “too liberal,” not a “real Georgian.” While she served as CEO for the Points of Light Foundation, the organization gave grants to “inmates” and “terrorists.” And her Senate campaign must feature images of her and her family “in rural settings with rural-oriented imagery” because the Atlanta-based candidate will struggle to connect with rural voters. These may sound like attacks from the Senate candidate’s Republican rival, but in fact, those are a few of the concerns expressed in her own campaign plan, which sources say was posted online briefly in December and appears to have been drafted earlier that month.

NYT Poll: Explaining Online Panels and the 2014 Midterms. By Nate Cohn
The results offer a trove of nonpartisan data and show a broad and competitive playing field heading into the final few months of the campaign. The Republicans appear to hold a slight advantage in the fight for the Senate and remain in a dominant position in the House. They need to pick up six seats to gain Senate control, and they hold a clear advantage in races in three states: South Dakota, Montana and West Virginia. The data from YouGov, an opinion-research firm that enjoyed success in 2012, finds the G.O.P. with a nominal lead in five additional states.

'Let Me Google That for You'—Now a Congressional Bill: Some think the government is wasting money on an agency that search engines have made obsolete. One bill would eliminate it altogether. By Alex Brown
Excerpt: A little-known branch of the Commerce Department faces elimination, thanks to advances in technology and a snarkily named bill from Sens. Tom Coburn and Claire McCaskill. The National Technical Information Service compiles federal reports, serving as a clearinghouse for the government's scientific, technical, and business documents. The NTIS then sells copies of the documents to other agencies and the public upon request. It's done so since 1950. But Coburn and McCaskill say it's hard to justify 150 employees and $66 million in taxpayer dollars when almost all of those documents are now available online for free. (Lay off 150 Democrat-voting government bureaucrats to save $66M? Bill is not going anywhere. ~Bob)

Is Detroit's New Light Rail Line America's Greatest Boondoggle? A $137 million three-mile train is coming to a nearly deserted avenue in a bankrupt city. By Jim Epstein
Excerpt: Let's consider what the new light rail line will mean for the people who live and work in the Motor City. Today, the suburbanites who commute to downtown Detroit might be frustrated by their limited lunch options—vacant storefronts don’t facilitate much culinary variety—but at least they get to enjoy a congestion-free drive to the office. Under-utilized lots and garages occupy almost 40 percent of the land in downtown Detroit, so the walk from the car to the cube takes just a few minutes. (Light rail is another liberal chimera, but part of the progressive catechism. ~Bob)

Paying for Public Employee Health Costs
Excerpt: Health care costs across the economy are rising, an increase that becomes clear when analyzing how the cost of providing health insurance for public employees has changed over the last decade: Adjusting for inflation, in 2001, state and local governments spent $70 billion on health insurance. In 2010, state and local governments spent $117 billion on health insurance, an increase of $2,400 per public employee. While a private business would address these costs by passing them on to workers (whether by giving smaller wage increases, increasing cost sharing or providing less generous coverage), public employment is generally governed by union contracts, which limits the ability of governments to respond to financial problems by adjusting wages and benefits.

Federal Poverty Measurement Is Misleading
Excerpt: The poverty rate today sits at 15 percent, the same rate that existed in the 1960s when the government's War on Poverty began, explains Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation.
But why has poverty remained at the same level when federal and state welfare spending has dramatically increased and is now 16 times higher today than it was in the 1960s? Rector explains that the Census Bureau's poverty measures are incomplete. Poverty is a measurement of income below a specific threshold, yet income includes only wages and salaries -- not welfare benefits. Thus, spending on the federal government's 80 welfare programs (which provide cash, food, housing and medical care) are not included in a person's income. (Q: If retirees who paid in get taxed on Social Security benefits, why shouldn't welfare benefits also be taxed? A: Because the Democrats would then hire bureaucrats to collect the tax, and increase the benefits to cover it. ~Bob)

Still fighting: The Delphi workers Obama robbed. By Michelle Malkin
http://michellemalkin.com/2014/07/25/still-fighting-the-delphi-workers-obama-robbed/
Excerpt: The White House pretended to champion American workers this week with gimmicky initiatives on federal job training and “workplace innovation.” But far from the Beltway dog-and-pony show, a group of American workers ruthlessly shafted by the Obama administration was finally getting some real support — and inching toward justice. It was five years ago this summer that 20,000 white-collar nonunion workers from Delphi (a leading auto parts company spun off from GM in 1999) had their pensions sabotaged as part of a rotten White House deal with Big Labor. Two court rulings this summer have given the victims hope. Their plight must not be forgotten.

U.S. releases images showing Russia firing into Ukraine
Excerpt: The United States released a series of satellite images Sunday that appear to support its claims that Russian forces have fired across the border into Ukraine to support rebels there, suggesting a new level of direct Russian involvement in the conflict.
The images show artillery and rocket-blast signatures inside Russia and craters formed by the artillery strikes in Ukraine.

Fracking push gets go-ahead across UK as ministers tighten safeguards
Excerpt: Ministers will give the go-ahead on Monday for a big expansion of fracking across Britain that will allow drilling in national parks and other protected areas in "exceptional circumstances". The government will invite firms to bid for onshore oil and gas licences for the first time in six years, with about half of the country advertised for exploration.

James Carville: Obama ‘Doesn’t Really Care’ What The American People Think
http://dailycaller.com/2014/07/24/james-carville-obama-doesnt-really-care-what-the-american-people-think/#ixzz38kPkX2pb
Excerpt: Former Democratic strategist James Carville sounded a little exasperated Thursday when he admitted President Obama “doesn’t really care” what the American people think about his presidency. The Fox News contributor sat down with Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly and “The Five” host Andrea Tantaros to discuss President Obama’s consistently depressed poll numbers. Carville noted that the president’s low numbers have been “stable” at about “43.6 [percent approval] — which is not very good, but not collapsing.”

Military bans troops from being honored by vacation Bible school
http://libertyunyielding.com/2014/07/26/military-bans-troops-honored-vacation-bible-school/
Excerpt: In yet another nod to someone’s skewed idea of the First Amendment and political correctness, a Missouri National Guard armory was forced to decline an invitation to be honored by a local Baptist church youth group. (But they can participate in Gay Pride parades in uniform? I have no problem with gays, but do with troops in uniform taking part in political rallies. ~Bob)

Worth Reading: Global Warming Has Little to Do With Global Warming. By Joe Bastardi
Excerpt: The simple fact is this: A test that can be evaluated objectively is underway. That test matches the ideas of people like me that nature is in control (i.e., sun, oceans, stochastic events) vs. the idea that CO2 is the control knob. We have the objective way at looking at it by satellite and that measure started in 1978 after the Pacific was in its cold cycle for 30 years. The game is now in the second half. The warming that occurred from the late 70s to mid 90s was correlated almost 1 to 1 with the Pacific warming, and this large body of water with tremendous stores of energy warming the air till the global atmosphere adapted, and the temperature rise leveled off. We could not observe nearly as accurately before similar events, we did not have the satellites to do so! The Pacific flipped into its warm cycle in 1978, for the first 30 years of satellite era temps, and is now turning cold. The Atlantic is in its warm cycle, but will soon turn colder. So we simply watch the global temperatures while the downside of the cycle occurs and see what they do. ... I graduated from what I consider to be the greatest meteorology school on the face of the planet, Penn State. (OK, here is yet another excellent commentary on the AGW debate, with a point that is really important yet has not come up in discussions up to now. The writer is well qualified to discuss weather and its changes, not that it matters much to the people who are deeply, heavily invested in the idea. Anyhow, go ahead and see what he has to say about the subject. --Del)

Who Said It? Some Amazing Flip-Flops on Same-Sex Marriage. By Michael Brown
Excerpt: Who said this and when did he or she say it? ... Quote: “I think that the vast majority of Americans find [same-sex marriage] to be something they can't agree with. But I think most Americans are fair. And if they believe that people in committed relationships want to share their lives and, not only that, have the same rights that I do in my marriage, to decide who I want to inherit my property or visit me in a hospital, I think that most Americans would think that that's fair and that should be done.” Answer: That was former Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a CBS News interview in 2003.

President Obama’s competence problem is worse than it looks. By Chris Cillizza
Excerpt: Almost six years on from that election, however, Obama is faltering badly on the competence question and, in so doing, badly imperiling not only his ability to enact any sort of second term agenda but also Democrats' chances this fall. A series of events -- from the VA scandal to the ongoing border crisis to the situation in Ukraine to the NSA spying program -- have badly undermined the idea that Obama can effectively manage the government.

Obamacare News

The Gift That Keeps on Giving
Returned a rental truck today and asked the gal if U-Haul was ok to work for, if they treat you ok. She said they were ok, but really clamped down on part timers' hours to avoid benefits, like Obamacare. --GS

Excerpt: But this was not a drafting error at all. The point was to coerce the states into setting up exchanges, and the Left’s premise in structuring Obamacare as it did was its assessment that Obamacare, and especially its subsidies, would be popular.Obamacare turned out to be unpopular, however, and state governors and legislators did not suffer any political blow-back for refusing to help implement it. There was no ministerial drafting mistake; there was a mistaken assumption that the public would rally behind the policy, creating political pressure on state governments. Because statists think Obamacare is a good idea, they figured everyone would be brought around to that conclusion.

Excerpt: Gilead (NASDAQ: GILD) has become the whipping boy du jour for the forthcoming Obamacare-driven cost explosion in government and private health spending. Apparently, everything was going swimmingly until Gilead — right out the blue! — dropped a cure for Hepatitis C on the market and threw everyone’s spending projections into a tizzy. Politicians and the health insurance industry have embarked on a high-profile campaign to shame Gilead for the price of its new wonder-drug, Sovaldi, which can add up to $84,000 for a course of treatment. If successful, this campaign will have terrible long-term consequences for medical innovation.

Obama Goes Around Congress — Again — to Expand Obamacare Coverage. By Pete Kasperowicz
Excerpt: The Obama administration on Tuesday will publish a proposed rule that would give thousands of temporary and seasonal government workers access to the government’s health care program, even though Obamacare explicitly prohibits them from using that program.

Undocumented Democrat News

Unbelievable! President Obama Considers Solving Illegal Immigrant Issue by Flying in Children Directly to the U.S.
Excerpt: The Obama administration has new idea to stem the flow of people on the southern border: set up a refugee processing center in Honduras so they can fly to the U.S. This is not a joke, unfortunately. It’s being reported in The New York Times.

Senator: Obama Preparing To 'Nullify' Immigration Laws
Excerpt: Noting Obama’s reported plan to provide up to six million parents of illegal immigrant DREAMers living in the U.S. work authorization via executive orders, Sessions said Obama would be effectively ending enforcement of U.S. immigration laws.

Why is the Border Patrol harassing US citizens 100 miles from the border?
Excerpt: While thousands of undocumented immigrants are allowed to pass through our borders illegally, then given bus passes and airline tickets to scatter throughout the United States and eventually disappear, American citizens possessing valid U.S. passports are being harassed at border checkpoints in locations up to 100 miles from any international border. Fox News host John Stossel revealed this fact in a disturbing video called, “Constitution Free Zones,” which should have most Americans seeing red. It was one segment of his Saturday presentation that asked the question, “Where’s the line between security and liberty?” according to Fox News.

Excerpt: While the United States sent tens of thousands of soldiers to try and hold Iraq and Afghanistan only to fail; Mexico took California with a small army of underpaid handymen who claim entire cities and send back some 20 billion dollars a year. As conquests go, it's not hard to see who did more with less. In 2009, 417 Mexican migrants died trying to reach America, and 317 American soldiers died in Afghanistan. But Mexico has more to show for it than America does. Every Mexican who settles across the border is a net gain who sends back money and spreads political influence. Meanwhile America is spending trillions on a much smaller army in a country whose land no one actually wants.

Protesters Swarm Beacon Hill, ‘Livid’ Over Illegal Immigration
Excerpt: An anti-illegal immigration rally on Beacon Hill outside the State House on Saturday, July 26 was teeming with protesters. While Bree Sison of CBS Boston estimated that the gathering drew hundreds of people, Jeff Kuhner, the host of WRKO’s The Kuhner Report, who organized the rally, put the number closer to 10,000 people. People carrying signs that said “Deport illegals,” and “Americans before illegals” stood just outside the State House from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (In the lead picture of the Massachusetts State House, you'll note a door on the right of the balcony. That leads to the senate foyer. It was a great place to step out on a nice night to get a breath of fresh air during debates. ~Bob)

Report: FEMA Looking To House Illegals In Empty Big Box Stores, Airport Hangars
The Obama administration is reportedly looking to house illegal immigrant juveniles in empty big box stores and even airplane hangars across the nation. According to a report in The New Republic, "in recent weeks, FEMA representatives have sent mass emails to advocacy networks throughout the country soliciting potential detention facilities and offering guidelines for acceptable spaces." Suggestions for "workable locations" include "Office space, warehouse, big box store, shopping mall with interior concourse, event venues, hotel or dorms, aircraft hangers [sic]." In addition, facilities must reportedly be within "50 miles of major city (Pop ~200K) /airport; available for lease; able to be fenced or have adequate security.” (Per article, toilets optional...Hey, what about the Superdome? --Barb)

Jeff Sessions: This Week 'Critical' For Congress To Thwart Obama's Plans To Nullify Immigration Laws
Excerpt: Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) said this week will be one of the most critical weeks in the history of the republic for Americans who want to preserve the rule of law that has made America so exceptional. President Barack Obama is reportedly intent on granting temporary amnesty and work permits to possibly eight million more illegal immigrants once Congress goes on its August recess after this week, and Sessions said Congress has a chance this week to "make it exceedingly difficult" for Obama to go forward with his plans.

Holiday Memories You'll Cherish Forever. By Mark Steyn
Excerpts: One of the reasons why so many Americans oppose amnesty and a "path to citizenship" for illegal aliens is because, even if one buys it in utilitarian terms, to accept that an honorable American identity can be born from an illegal act seems to mock the very essence of citizenship and allegiance. Yet, putting aside the soon to be amnestied millions, it seems to me the deformation of law necessary to accommodate the armies of the undocumented is having a broader corrupting effect on the federal bureaucracy. For example, can you think of anything more risible than working for something called "US Customs & Border Protection"? There is no "border" to "protect". On the Rio Grande, President Obama, the Coyote-in-Chief, has simply erased said border. So one sympathizes with the psychological burdens of being an employee of "Customs & Border Protection". The continued rise of the abuse of power by our guardians, whether the Border Patrol, the BATF, the EPA, the FBI, the SWAT team of NEA (and SWAT team overuse in general), or just the local police, State cops, Sheriff's deputies, etc., has gotten to be really noticeable. Thanks in no small part to the Net and watchdogs. Plus there's the militarization of so many of these agencies, who now have these just wonderful toys of armored vehicles, some complete with high caliber MG, lots of body armor, helmets that not only protect you but make you anonymous, and of course the ever present German made automatic weapons. What we need is more people to stand up at the start of one of these and scream, demand the supervisor, demand names and official business cards, explain clearly that they know there is an attempt to violate their rights, and that there will be consequences if this nonsense doesn't stop now. The BSA should be going to Congress with this incident and demanding that the agents involved and their supervisor be brought to task, have the incident go in their records, and just about get on their knees in public to apologize for their actions. THAT is what should happen, and it would be the kind of thing that every gun-carrying agent would become aware of, and remember, and seriously discourage their even thinking of trying such crap ever. But what do I know, I'm just an old American who believes in our Founding principles and especially the Bill of Rights (remember, no "unreasonable search and seizure"?), and that our guardians should never stoop to bureaucratic abusive behaviors. --Del)

Excerpt: “Hamas has broken five cease-fires,” Netanyahu told "Fox News Sunday.” “They’ve violated their own cease-fires. They are firing on us now. … We’ll do whatever is necessary to achieve our goal of a sustained quiet.” Hamas announced earlier Sunday that it has agreed to a 24-hour holiday truce in Gaza, hours after Israel resumed its ground offensive and airstrikes against the militant group for firing a salvo of rockets at the southern part of the country.

Excerpt: Protesters chanted “Israel is an assassin, Holland is an accomplice” and “we are all Palestinians,” and some were seen gesturing the quenelle, a reverse Nazi-salute, AFP reported. Tension mounted as hundreds of protesters, some masked, began throwing stones and projectiles at police who responded with tear gas. (Thankfully, the Jihadists have neither the courage nor the fighting spirit or skills of the Wehrmacht or the Waffen SS. ~Bob)

Paris's Kristallnacht. By Guy Millière
Excerpt: Almost all French politicians adopt an attitude of appeasement toward the enemies of Israel and Jews. They act as if they did not see that the hate speech that France finances in the Middle East is now spreading throughout France itself. This was the first time since World War II that an anti-Semitic pogrom took place in France. No major French television report speaks of Hamas's genocidal Jew-hatred or of the use of Arab women and children as human shields. Criticizing radical Islam on public television is now almost impossible. Members of the Israeli government are never interviewed on French television.

Worth Reading: The tragedy of the Arabs
Excerpt: The absence of a liberal state has been matched by the absence of a liberal economy. After independence, the prevailing orthodoxy was central planning, often Soviet-inspired. Anti-market, anti-trade, pro-subsidy and pro-regulation, Arab governments strangled their economies. The state pulled the levers of economic power—especially where oil was involved. Where the constraints of post-colonial socialism were lifted, capitalism of the crony, rent-seeking kind took hold, as it did in the later years of Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak. Privatisation was for pals of the government. (Though my reading of history suggests that the Islamic Golden Age was hardly as tolerant as is made out. ~Bob)

Excerpt: Important columns by former attorney general Michael Mukasey and Caroline Glick make the point that in Israel’s defensive war against Hamas, the main thing to focus on is not the missiles; it’s the tunnels. Perhaps more significantly, they demonstrate that the Obama administration, in its mulish appeasement of the Muslim Brotherhood-Sunni supremacist axis that even Islamic governments (indeed, even the Saudis) are shunning, is subverting a golden opportunity to achieve decisive victory over Hamas – the necessary precondition if there is ever to be a stable Israeli-Palestinian settlement.

Security Sources Say Hamas Planned a Massive ‘Terror Tunnels’ Attack for September 24. By Sharona Schwartz
Excerpt: Quoting unnamed Israeli security sources, Ma’ariv reported that the plan was to send 200 terrorists through each tunnel simultaneously – using dozens of tunnels – to six Israeli communities in southern Israel for a shocking attack on the Jewish high holiday of Rosh Hashanah which this year begins on September 24.

Reaching Critical Mass
There is an undefined point, when a government is so corrupt and incompetent, that citizens will no longer be willing to defend it. Iran or maybe Obama’s chief handler Valerie Jarrett, the Iranian Mole, seems to be playing our president, he who has no experience at anything, like the proverbial fish on a line, but just maybe, one of Iran’s homicidal maniacs has read the writing of old Sun Tzu. ....The quotes have been there to read for 2400 years, but some people are too busy hobnobbing with celebrities and fund raising to be concerned with defeating out enemies. (Given the results in western civilization over the past 20 years, where the "best and brightest" no longer seek public office and we have a civilization in decline, I'm inclined to think that democracy is no longer worth the lives of our best young men and women fighting for it. But it is worth fighting, either militarily against the armed jihad or politically at home to protect our people from oppression by religious fanatics who want to impose their beliefs by force or by the every-more-coercive, growing statist government advocated by communists, socialists and progressives. ~Bob)

Qatar Friday Sermon Calls For Killing of Jews
Excerpt: A Qatari religious leader used his Friday sermon last week to pray to Allah to "kill [the Jews] the very last one." Sheik Tareq Al-Hawwas' sermon was aired on Qatar TV, according to the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI). (Suppose a Christian or Jewish clergyman prayed for God to kill every Muslim? Think it would get comment from the left? Think this will? ~Bob)

Kerry’s error has been to put so much emphasis on achieving a quick halt to the bloodshed that he has solidified the role of Hamas, the intractable, unpopular Islamist group that leads Gaza, along with the two hard-line Islamist nations that are its key supporters, Qatar and Turkey

Keep Talking, Joan: Comedienne Joan Rivers’s refreshing support for Israel By Ian Tuttle
Excerpt: ‘Let me just tell you,” says Joan Rivers: “If New Jersey were firing rockets into New York, we would wipe them out. If we heard they were digging tunnels from New Jersey to New York, we would get rid of Jersey.”

Cameroon deputy prime minister's wife kidnapped by Boko Haram. Amadou Ali and family came under fire in town of Kolofata, with militants taking his wife, in group's third attack this week
Excerpt: The wife of Cameroon's vice-prime minister was kidnapped and at least three people were killed in an attack by Boko Haram militants in the northern town of Kolofata on Sunday, Cameroon officials said. A local religious leader, or lamido, named Seini Boukar Lamine, who is also the town's mayor, was kidnapped in a separate attack on his home. Op-Ed: Madeleine Albright is Still Pressuring Israel: Still criticizing Israel after all these years, she has a lot to explain about her own actions.
Excerpt: It's been 22 years since Madeleine Albright was a foreign policy adviser to President Jimmy Carter, 17 years since she was America's ambassador to the United Nations, and 13 since she was secretary of state. Yet all these years later, Albright is still pressuring Israel and trying to appease Israel's enemies. Like many former government officials, Mrs. Albright, who is now a professor at Georgetown University, keeps showing up in the media as a foreign affairs expert. Unfortunately, she's doing it at Israel's expense.

Excerpt: The Times of Israel is reporting that a government official told Israeli Channel 2 that Kerry “dug a tunnel under the Egyptian ceasefire proposal” which was accepted by Israel on Friday, and gave the Israeli government a text that accepted most of the demands made by Hamas. To the “horror” of the Israeli ministers, the Kerry proposal accepted Hamas’s demands for the opening of border crossings into Gaza — where Israel and Egypt fear the import of weaponry; the construction of a seaport; and the creation of a post-conflict funding channel for Hamas from Qatar and other countries, according to the sources. The proposal, meanwhile, did not even provide for Israel to continue demolishing the Hamas network of “terror tunnels” dug under the Israeli border. (Well, when Kerry was caught saying the IDF was conducting "A Hell of a pinpoint" job on the tunnels and that we had to get over there to stop it, shows the US regime is backing radical Islamists, despite pushing gay agendas. --Brb)

Excerpt: Further, they had outraged the Egyptians, who were dumped from the negotiations by Obama and Kerry in favor of Turkey and Qatar. Our administration seems to have a preference for the more extreme Islamist/Muslim Brotherhood societies, although you would think, given their professed loyalty to women’s and gay rights, these cultures would be anathema to them. Never mind. Obama is an equal opportunity narcissist and everything’s fine, unless you cross him.

Excerpt: Multiple media outlets report that Hamas’s offensive tunnel network – now known to have been composed of over forty attack tunnels dug underneath Israel’s border with the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip – was set to be activated during the Jewish High Holidays (September 24th) as a mass terror attack. The attack was meant to generate as many as ten thousand casualties, men, women and particularly children and hundreds of captives. Explosives were particularly placed underneath kindergartens to make certain that these “institutions” would be the first struck, even before any thing else. The IDF recently published the below map showing that tunnels were created in pairs, to empty out on both sides of nearby communities.

Excerpt: “Imam Ahmad reported in his Musnad that Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin Al-‘As (may God be pleased with him) reports, Whilst we were around the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) writing down, he was asked, ‘Which of the two cities is to be opened first, Constantinople or Rome?’ He (the Prophet) answered, ‘The city of Heraclius will be opened first!’” (Imam Ahmad, and Al-Albany) Sheikh Yousef Al-Qaradawi quoted this hadith a few years ago and added: “This means that Islam will return to Europe as a conqueror and victor, after being expelled from it twice – once from the South, from Andalusia, and a second time from the East, when it knocked several times on the door of Athens.”

Hamas to Buy N. Korean Weapons as Kerry Pledges $47 Million in Gaza Aid: Wouldn’t a direct wire transfer from the White House to Pyongyang have saved on the wire transfer fees?
Excerpt: The Telegraph reports that Hamas has may have already put down a down payment on a secret weapons and communications equipment deal worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. ... Keeping in mind that money is fungible and Hamas are experts at redirecting foreign aid, this report comes hard on the heels of the report that US Secretary of State John Kerry is sending $47 million to Gaza for humanitarian aid. $15 million of that aid has been earmarked for UNRWA. UNRWA schools have been used to store Hamas rockets, and UNRWA officials have even transferred rockets to Hamas.
