Very interesting news and comment today

Update

Tuesday, December 23, is my one year anniversary
Of going to the hospital and coming home with someone else's lung. (I say a prayer for the donor and family every day.). They told me going in that the one-year survival rate was 80%. Unless something goes wrong by Tuesday, I made that cut. Which didn't look likely back in May. They say the five-year survival rate is 50%. We shall see. But if you bet against a Marine--ask for odds. ~Bob

World War I in Photos: A Century Later
Worth seeing: I have visited the Scottish War memorial in Edinburgh Castle several times, look at the tens of thousands of names, and always leave with tears on my cheeks. ~Bob. As far as I know, the battles of WW1 were the greatest bloodlettings of history, I don't think any other battles have ever matched the number of deaths occurring within comparatively short time frames in limited areas, such as Verdun. It was a war in which the technology of killing had progressed much faster than the means of protection and it had not yet been learned that the tactic of mass assaults across open distances was the fastest way possible to lose your own men in huge numbers. If you examine the pictures, check out the one of the monstrous crater near the end, an explosion that must have been felt 50 miles away. The explosives of the day weren't as powerful as we have now, but they produced and used them in vast amounts. --Del

General News and Comment

Carry On, Marines, Carry On! By Andy Weddington
Excerpt: A poet? Hardly. One, freestyle (as a real poet later identified the effort) from January past, have I to credit. Titled 'Still' - the contrasting definitions (not moving/continuing) of the word so intrigued - the prose honored my (still) Dad. For today, another try. Poetry? Befitting Christmas. But struggle I, to paint with words. Thus, 'Carry On, Marines, Carry On!'...

From the left: 4 maps that show why Democrats shouldn't dump the South
Excerpt: The Democratic Party's dismal showing in the 2014 elections caused progressives and the party faithful to look for answers, or at least for someone to blame. A handful of pundits decided the Democrats' problems could be traced back to one region of the country: the South. ... Democrats are struggling in the South, but it's even worse in other parts of the country. For example, while Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate lost by an average of 18 points in the South, they were walloped by an average of 26 points in states in the Great Plains. That's in line with past election results: President Obama's worst states in 2008 and 2012 (map below) were in the Great Plains, which Gallup surveys reveal are among the most conservative. But for some reason, we're never treated to post-Election Day screeds from Northern pundits about the Great Plains being a cesspool of "prejudice" and "resentment."

Obama: North Korea Attack Was ‘Cyber-Vandalism,’ Not An ‘Act Of War’ [VIDEO]
Excerpt: I think it was an act of cyber-vandalism that was very costly, very expensive. .... But, you know, we’re going to be in an environment in this new world where so much is digitalized that both state and non-state actors are going to have the capacity to disrupt our lives in all sort of ways....But that’s something that I think we can manage through as long as public [and] private sector is working together. (Scary. Wonder what the response would be if Hollywood had the gumption to make a movie with a plot about a Muslim Trojan becoming POTUS to start WWIII and turn citizen against citizen, citizens against police and military who protect us, and import hundreds of thousands from countries who hate our way of life and have no desire to "blend"? Think someone would bankroll that one? And how would POTUS treat them? (Think drone.) --Barb. And Pearl harbor was an act of ship vandalism, not war. But that was when Democrats like FDR had nerve. ~Bob)

Sexist and stupid--a twofer! That time Obama called on only women at a press conference. By Nia-Malika Henderson
Excerpt: President Obama did something remarkable on Friday. He held his last press conference of the year, and the only people in the entire press corps who were called on to ask questions were women. Yes, this was on purpose; it had to be. (Reverse discrimination doesn't end discrimination, it brings retaliation and makes it worse. And political reporters will retaliate. I know. ~Bob

President Obama likes James Flacco a lot, whoever that is.
Excerpt: He also said that he loved the film's actors, Seth Rogen and James Flacco.
Wait, who is James Flacco? The satirical film actually stars James Franco. Joe Flacco happens to be a quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens. (If Bush said...oh, never mind. ~Bob)

White House Says Courts have NO Power to Review Obama’s Decision-Making
Excerpt: Over the past six years, Obama has repeatedly taken it upon himself to decide what laws he would enforce and what ones he doesn’t want enforced. The first ones that come to mind are the Defense of Marriage Act and immigration laws. Then there are other laws that Obama decided to alter and change on his own. This would include immigration laws and the Affordable Care Act to name just a few. The drafters of the US Constitution purposefully wrote it to keep law making powers out of the hands of the President. Those powers were reserved for Congress who was supposed to do the will of the people, but we know that doesn’t happen anymore either. (If the courts gainsay Obama, they are guilty of the crime of Lèse-majesté, a serious crime that can invoke the death penalty. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%C3%A8se-majest%C3%A9 ~Bob)

Why War Must be Studied. By Jon Solomon
Excerpt: A colleague recently pointed me to LGEN H. R. McMaster’s excellent Veterans Day speech at Georgetown University last month in which he argued that the scholarly study of war is central to the prevention of war. I've excerpted some of his most eloquent observations below, as they speak for themselves: There is a tendency in the United States to confuse the study of war and warfare with militarism. Thinking clearly about the problem of war and warfare, however, is both an unfortunate necessity and the best way to prevent it. As the English theologian, writer, and philosopher G.K. Chesterton observed, “War is not the best way of settling differences, but it is the only way of preventing them being settled for you.” As George Washington, who addressed Georgetown students in August 1797 observed, “To be prepared for war is the most effectual means to promote peace.” One of the patterns of American military history is to be unprepared for war either because of wishful thinking or a failure to consider continuities in the nature of war—especially war’s political and human dimensions… (The study of war doesn't make you want to engage in it. Duh! But some egghead intellectuals can only see it that way, and that leads to disdain for those in the military, and a readiness to find them to be lovers of death and destruction. This is silly and counterproductive for a society. The speech General McMaster made is a true classic, so you might want to click on that link and read it in its entirety. --Del)

Lawyer for convicted Fort Bragg soldier Clint Lorance argues new evidence in Afghan shootings case
Excerpt: The lawyer for a former Fort Bragg officer convicted of murdering two Afghanistan nationals says the Army might not have prosecuted the officer if it had done a more thorough criminal investigation. Former 1st Lt. Clint Lorance is serving 20 years for ordering his soldiers in July 2012 to shoot three men when they were riding a motorcycle near his platoon in a Taliban-controlled area of Afghanistan. Defense lawyer John N. Maher says records have surfaced since last year's court-martial that indicate that one of the three Afghans had connections to bombings and terror networks. (His mother said something like, "So I get the notice that my son is alive, but he has been sentenced to 20 years for 'murder" when he was doing his job and saving his paratroopers. If he had not done his job, I would be getting the notice that he is dead, but a 'hero.'" Contrast this with POTUS, who sits in his office picking names to get droned with no repercussions, while looking at the Nobel Peace Prize. Anyone figure this scenario out yet? --Barb)

Important: Budget experts: Move Tricare beneficiaries to Obamacare
Excerpt: The Defense Department could slash its enormous health care budget by requiring Tricare beneficiaries not on active duty to get health care coverage through Affordable Care Act exchanges, according to several current and former congressional budget experts. In the past several budget cycles, the Pentagon has sought to reduce its $52 billion health budget by asking Congress to approve cost-savings measures that include increased Tricare fees for retirees, fees for Tricare For Life beneficiaries and cost-shares for active-duty families. (I suggest they try this first for retired federal civilian employees, especially Congress-Critters. The retired vets will be okay. They can renounce their citizenship, leave the country, then sneak back in illegally and be fully covered. Kipling: "O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away"; But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play." ~Bob)

America Reveals Who It Really Trusts in Poll of Most and Least Honest Jobs
Excerpt: “Please tell me how you would rate the honesty and ethical standard of people in these different fields — very high, high, average, low, or very low?”(Very high/High. Nurses: 80%. Doctors: 65%. Police officers: 48%. Lawyers: 21%. Congress-Critters: 7%. ~Bob)

Welcome to China and America's Nuclear Nightmare. Nuclear weapons will come to loom larger—and perhaps much larger—than they have since the Cold War over U.S. and Chinese military planning. By Elbridge Colby
Excerpt: FOR ALL the focus on maritime disputes in the South and East China Seas, there is an even greater peril in Asia that deserves attention. It is the rising salience of nuclear weapons in the region. China’s military buildup—in particular its growing capabilities to blunt America’s ability to project effective force in the western Pacific—is threatening to change the military balance in the area. This will lead to a cascade of strategic shifts that will make nuclear weapons more central in both American and Chinese national-security plans, while increasing the danger that other regional states will seek nuclear arsenals of their own. Like it or not, nuclear weapons in Asia are back. (Another situation steadily developing in the world that just doesn't look good for the future. The rulers of China can pretty much do whatever they want to invest in nuclear capability and advanced missile technology that will make it difficult for anyone to want to face off with them. And then they can proceed to throw their weight around in the region and try to expand their influence across all of Asia. Not a good prospect at all. We can only hope their own internal problems will someday cause the system to fail and chaos to descend there, which will distract them from ideas of expansion. --Del)

Southern Regional Presidential Primary Heading Toward Reality. By Todd Rehm
Excerpt: For most of 2014, Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp, a Republican, has been talking up the notion of an  “SEC Primary" that would move a number of Southeastern states’ presidential primaries to March first 2016 to enhance the region’s clout. The addition of other Southern states not part of the SEC football conference could mean a larger role for the former Confederacy in the selection of both parties’ nominees. The Democratic Party has been nearly eradicated across the South, as all the Governor’s mansions and United States Senate seats except in Florida and Virginia belong in GOP hands and Republicans control every state legislature in the Deep South.

Important: Here comes another mortgage binge. By Steve Chapman
Excerpt: Plenty of people who go on wild drinking binges end up with sound reasons to avoid repeating the experience: painful hangovers, lasting embarrassment, ruined relationships, encounters with police. But that doesn't stop some of them from doing it again. Maybe these are the same people running the federally backed mortgage companies. (Bush asked Congress several times to reform Freddie and Fannie before the crash. The leftist Dems, including Obama, always blocked reform. Barney Frank said the mortgage giants wouldn't cost us a nickel--they cost billions. Why do they do it? Last time, the folks running Fanny Mae made millions, while the average citizen lost his shirt in his home. Then they blamed "predatory lenders" for implementing the law. They never learn because results don't matter, only ideology, so the destruction of the middle class isn't their fault, though black homeownership was higher before the CRA than it is now. ~Bob)

King Of Common Core Pearson Closes Charitable Foundation Amid Legal Troubles
Excerpt: From 2008 through 2011, the Foundation provided grants to an independent organization of school officials in the U.S. for a jointly sponsored International Summit program, a series of conferences on education that were held abroad and attended by state school officials. The Foundation and Pearson also worked with the organization to plan and organize the International Summits, to identify speakers and presenters and in some cases to recommend school officials from participating countries. Since Pearson offers products and services throughout the U.S. and in many other countries, the school officials who were invited were from jurisdictions where Pearson actively did business and sought to do business. (International summits? This suggests globalization indoctrination of students, let alone national progressive propaganda......Barb)

Worth Reading: President Obama’s ‘betrayal’ of Cuban democrats. Washington Post editorial
Excerpt: Actually, “mistake” is the polite word used by Berta Soler of the Ladies in White, an astonishingly courageous group of women who march each week in support of political prisoners. “Betrayal” was the term used by several others, who asked why Mr. Obama had chosen to lift economic restrictions and dispatch an ambassador without requiring the “significant steps toward democracy” he once said must precede liberalization. (Basically, we are set to give away the store to Castro and the Communist Party of Cuba while obtaining nothing good for the Cuban people, and abandoning all those suffering under the regime. One more great marker for Obama's presidency that isn't really anything remarkable. But it sounds good when played nicely with sound bites. --Del)

Excerpt: With Christmas right around the corner, former President George W. Bush decided to do something special for a children’s hospital.

Worth Reading: Cold War Replay: This Time We Lose. By Mona Charen
Excerpt: Has there ever been a president more eager to make concessions to vicious regimes than Barack Obama? The opening of diplomatic relations with Cuba is the latest and, one fears, not the last in a string of preemptive concessions. Obama, with his blend of hard-left prejudices and vaulting solipsism, has sought throughout his presidency to atone for what he and his party view as America's past sins. That was the essence of the "reset" with Russia, which included betraying two of America's European allies, Poland and the Czech Republic, who had been scheduled to receive ground-based antiballistic missile systems. Though Obama is fond of saying "the Cold War is over," and even mocked Mitt Romney's concern about Russian behavior by sniffing, "The Eighties called, and they want their foreign policy back," it is Obama himself who seems fixated on reenacting the Cold War -- except this time, the U.S. loses

Gas prices dropping to $2.30 a gallon, Obama can't even win his war on energy.

Police release name of person shot by homeowner
Excerpt: "We believe that the homeowner shot the intruder in self-defense. The suspect had tried to make it into the residence. The homeowner said somebody's home, but the suspect continued. That's when the homeowner, fearing for her safety, shot the suspect," said Lt. J.C. Canaday with the Raleigh County Sheriff's Dept.

Race Card News

Excerpt: Two uniformed NYPD officers were shot dead Saturday afternoon as they sat in their marked police car on a Brooklyn street corner — in what investigators believe was a crazed gunman’s assassination-style mission to avenge Eric Garner and Michael Brown. ... “They Take 1 Of Ours…Let’s Take 2 of Theirs,” the post continued, signing off with, “This May Be My Final Post.” (Note to Obama, Holder, Jackson and Sharpton. When you inflame the mob for political and financial gain, you get mob violence. After incidents like this, they will still blame cops for being quick on the trigger. ~Bob)

Authorities say cop killer wanted retaliation for Michael Brown, Eric Garner deaths
Excerpt: Police said Brinsley, who was black, approached the passenger window of a marked police car at approximately 2:45 p.m. local time and opened fire, striking Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu in the head. The officers -- one Hispanic, one Asian -- were on special patrol doing crime reduction work in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn.

MONSTERS: People Take To Twitter To Celebrate NYPD Murders
Excerpt: These are just a few examples of people who, upon learning of the murder of two New York City police officers, took to Twitter to express their approval and glee. (Welcome to Obama's transformed America, where hatred rules. Would they have cared if the dude shot a black cop? --Barb. He shot an Asian and a Hispanic cop to protest white racism....My Democrat brother says Republicans are known as "The Party of Hate," so I guess these are all Republicans. ~Bob)

JESSICA CHAMBERS: Teen Murdered Immediately After Local Blacks Called For Rape & Burning Of White Women. By Doug Giles
Excerpt: One week before, and on just the day before Jessica Chambers was carjacked and burned to death, certain blacks among her intimate circle and acquaintance were involved in Facebook exchanges wherein calls for the rape and burnings of white women and children, especially the families of white police officers, were posted.  Although not a police officer himself, Jessica Chambers' father is an employee of the Panola County sheriff's department, in the vehicle maintenance section.

Minneapolis Principals Not Allowed to Suspend Black Students, Only White Ones
Excerpt: Here’s what is happening: Black students in Minneapolis schools are 10 times more likely than white and Asian students to be suspended. According to the Justice Department and Bernadeia Johnson, there is no explanation for this except blatant racism. The stats, they say, prove it: Black students are suspended at rates far higher than their proportional population. Ergo the statistical analysis shows that teachers are racists even though Asian students are suspended at lower rates than whites. (Blacks also commit almost 50% of the murders in the US, mostly of other blacks whose #blacklivesdon'tmatter, though they make up only 13% of the population. Should a black gangbanger who guns down a black child in a drive-by shooting be released because 13% of the murder convictions that year are already of blacks? That said, blacks should not be treated more harshly than whites either. But if blacks know they cannot be suspended, the decent majority of black students will be overwhelmed by the black thugs, and their education will get worse. Once again, the problem is culture, not race. As British psychiatrist Theodore Dalrymple points out in his excellent book, Life at the Bottom, the same pathologies exhibited by the black underclass in American cities are exhibited by the white English underclass in English cities. ~Bob)

Obamacare/Government Healthcare News

Obamacare’s Christmas surprise
Excerpt: To be clear, a citizen will sign up once for a private plan with a healthcare provider, only to have that plan changed by the federal government. Moreover, CMS will change your plan after the open enrollment period ends, leaving you and your family stuck with a potentially unwanted plan for the year. The only people that will be happier than the MIT economics professors and “government-knows-best” elitists will be the lawyers who will have the chance to litigate this bureaucratic fiasco.

In the Florida case, police said they arrested Marco Antonio Parilla Jr., 23, on a charge of first-degree murder. ... A man with the same name and birth date as Parilla was released from a Florida prison in March after serving a little more than two years for leaving the scene of a crash where there were injuries, as well as for various drug charges, corrections records show.

Worth Reading: U.S. Prisons Churning Out Thousands Of Radicalized Inmates
Excerpt: One out of three African-American inmates in U.S. prisons convert to Islam while incarcerated. This statistic is no longer limited to African-Americans in prison. The Huffington Post reported an estimated 35,000 – 40,000 inmates convert to Islam each year, and that 15 percent of the total U.S. prison population or 350,000 inmates are Muslim. This is more than 18 times the national representation of Muslims in Americareported to be 0.8 percent. Prisons are churning out converts to Islam who are taught they are righteously entitled to control the religion, speech, and dress of family, co-workers and strangers.

Excerpt: Parents in Farmville, North Carolina want to know why their children were given a Common Core vocabulary assignment in an English class that promoted the Prophet Muhammad and the Islamic faith. Pakistan: 77 militants killed after school massacre
Excerpt: Pakistani warplanes and ground forces killed at least 77 militants in a northwestern tribal region near the Afghan border, officials said Friday, days after Taliban fighters killed 148 people — most of them children — in a school massacre. Meanwhile, a Pakistani prosecutor said the government will try to cancel the bail granted to the main suspect in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks — a decision that outraged neighboring India and called into question Pakistan's commitment to fighting militancy.

Excerpt: The US launched a drone strike in the jihadist haven of Datta Khel in Pakistan's tribal agency of North Waziristan earlier today. The Pakistani military claimed it "cleared" Datta Khel in September as part of Operation Zarb-e-Azb, which was launched in mid-June this year The CIA-operated, remotely piloted Predators or Reapers fired a pair of missiles at a compound in the village of Mada Khel in the Datta Khel area of North Waziristan during the early morning, killing six jihadists, The News reported. A "high value target," who has not been named, is said to have been among those killed, Dawn noted. (I'd like to be a drone pilot based in the states. Seriously. Imagine No Religion: The Western Media and Islamic Terror. By Raymond Ibrahim
Excerpt: As the West experiences a rise in the sort of terror attacks that are endemic to the Islamic world—church attacks, sex-slavery and beheadings—it is only natural that the same mainstream media that habitually conceals such atrocities "over there," especially against Christians and other minorities under Islam, would also conceal the reality of jihadi aspirations "over here."

Must Read: Australia: Tragicomic West stresses danger of "Islamophobia"
Excerpt: The Commentator is not usually taken aback by its slavishly politically correct agenda, but the level of the grovelling after the tragic and deadly saga in Sydney Australia over the last 24 hours has been astounding. At the time of writing, the lead story on the BBC website is of course about that very tragedy, in which an Islamist fanatic took a random group hostage in a cafe, ultimately killing two of them. He did this in the name of Islam. But you wouldn't get that impression if you started to read the BBC's lead story, which astoundingly managed to avoid mentioning the words Islam, Islamic, Islamist, Muslim, or any derivations thereof for a full 16 paragraphs.

Embedding with the Women who are Kicking ISIS A$$. By Susannah George
Excerpt: Every morning when veteran fighter Lt. Col. Nasreen Hamlawa walks into her office, the first thing she sees is her daughter’s martyr poster. Snapped on the front lines outside Kirkuk just days before she was killed, Rangin Hamlawa, 26, dressed in classic beige peshmerga fatigues and holding a sniper rifle, stares hard into the camera. (The Kurds have been the victims of attacks from all sides, the Iraquis, the Turks, the other Arab lands, for centuries. They are almost like the Jews of the Muslim world, but they have become, by sheer necessity, very tough people. And they don't have a lot of territory, so every foot of it is precious to them, and they will fight like tigers to keep what they have. The ISIS barbarians will take their heads off as fast as they can, considering the Kurds to be traitors to "real Islam", and the Kurds understand about fanatic enemies who want to slaughter them all. So as things get nasty, the women volunteer to fight as well. Since the supply lines are short and the land is what they know already, they don't have to go into battle like our guys, carrying 80-90 lb loads. This makes it more practical for women to be engaged in the fight, certainly as snipers like this woman's daughter was. (Russian women snipers were active in WW2) If there is anyone in the world we should be supporting generously, it's the Kurds. Let's hope Obama and Congress will see it that way. --Del)
