A lot of not-to-be-missed news today

Friday morning I was putting my daily morning health numbers in the spread sheet I keep when, wham, I got the Blue Screen of Death on my computer. First time on this one, no idea why, though my virus protection had just upgraded itself. It came back up, and I'm backing up recent stuff, but if I go suddenly dark...

I was out of pocket Thursday and much of Friday, so this is a long post--but a great many interesting items.

My health seems to be slowly improving. At rehab Friday, was able to increase my treadmill time to 18 minutes, speed to 1.7 mph, did 5 sets of 10 reps each f 3 other exercises, and stayed at 95% O2 saturation on 2 LPM, down from 3 LPM Wednesday. This (Saturday) morning, my FEV numbers were in the 1.52 range! We took the grand daughter to the Dells Thursday for the Upper dells oat tour. I walked at both of the landings, one a good ways uphill, and the sats stayed up. Sitting on the boat at rest, I was able to turn the oxygen off completely and stay at 95%. Cheering, except the last time I was able to sit at rest without O2 was at Bonnie's VA volunteer lunch on 5/21. Then on 5/22, I had a bronch; had to go back in the hospital that night, and by Monday, 5/26, I had to be intubated with a breathing ventilator to survive. So cautious optimism called for. ~Bob

The Law
What is the iron-bound law

This is apparently a hoax. Sorry: Excellent Video of Malaysian Flt 17 being hit by missile
I believe that the video of the aircraft shootdown is actually that of the AN-26 that went down on July 14, rather than that of MH-17. --JerseyGirl. Bob, I still transliterate Cyrilic. AH-30 would indicate an AN-30, which is an Antonov-30 aircraft manufactured, per Wikipedia, in Kiev in the Ukraine. These are mainly surveillance aircraft. Also, this clip published on YouTube on June 6, 2014. Cannot be H17. --Barb. Why people do this is beyond me. ~Bob

Excerpt: The Russian military fired artillery rounds into eastern Ukraine on Thursday, a "clear escalation" of hostilities there, Army Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman, said.

Worth Reading: The Vacant Presidency: The world is aflame and our leader is on the 14th green. By Charles Krauthammer
Excerpt: The preferred explanation for the president’s detachment is psychological. He’s checked out. Given up. Let down and disappointed by the world, he is in withdrawal.
Perhaps. But I’d propose an alternative theory that gives him more credit: Obama’s passivity stems from an idea.

Another Missing Boeing Airliner Now Confirmed as Crashed
Excerpt: Air AlgĂ©rie lost contact with flight 5017, which was en route in northern Africa from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, to Algiers, Algeria. The Boeing MD-83 jet was carrying 116 on board when it disappeared an hour after take-off over Northern Mali. An Algerian official confirmed to Reuters that the airliner has crashed, though the cause remains unknown, as does the number of casualties.

Is Koch money just too dirty to be used for Black college students?

Recently the Koch brothers made a gift of $25 million to the United Negro College Fund. Gee, this sounds like a nice thing, doesn't it? But a bunch of people in other organizations went into a rage about this, claiming this is just a hypocritical way to influence Blacks when they claim the Kochs are the real demons behind trying to deny voting rights to Blacks. That claim doesn't come with any facts or data or examples of any kind, but I would not be surprised if some Koch money has gone to groups that support voter ID laws. The “strings” attached to the Kochs’ gift: $18.5 million of $25 million is to create a “Koch Scholars” program, for “exemplary students” who want to study “how entrepreneurship, economics, and innovation contribute to well-being for individuals, communities, and society.” Koch organizations get two of five seats on that scholarship selection committee. $4 million of the grant is unrestricted support to HBCUs. Basically, the Koch Scholars are the kids who want to study how the traditional business virtues of the USA are good for us all. Some apparently see that as a bad thing for Black kids to learn about, I guess they would prefer study of how socialism is really best for everyone. There are Black conservatives who are supporting the acceptance of the money by the UNCF, and there are others who are totally bonkers about it and the major public employee union AFSCME has broken its long tie with UNCF over this. AFSCME spends a lot more than $25 million on political contributions every year, but did not offer to make up the Koch contribution of UNCF would reject it, so I guess their priorities are clear. This strikes me as a demonstration of how carried away people can get with their biases, even their basic hatreds, to the point of irrationality. The Koch brothers MUST be White demons whose mission is to grind the poor, most especially the minorities, and thus absolutely nothing they ever do can be a good in the slightest way. To touch their money is to sell out, to lie down with the dog and then get up with fleas. I don't know the brothers, but I expect they are human beings, not demons, and while their politics and belief in capitalism put them on the opposite side of the aisle with many, their willingness to help Black students study what has been good for the country can most certainly be a simple, sincere goodwill contribution. And in the spirit of "innocent until proven guilty", a great American founding principle, I think their money should get the benefit of the doubt, and be accepted without controversy to achieve the good of helping poor Black kids get to college. It saddens me to see the level of bitter opposition to this. --Del)

Video: Woman in Labor ‘Not Allowed’ to Cross Street to Hospital Over Obama’s Impending Motorcade. By Oliver Darcy
Excerpt: Witnesses say a pregnant woman in labor was prevented by authorities from crossing a Los Angeles street to a hospital Wednesday because the road had been closed for President Barack Obama’s impending motorcade. The unidentified woman was barred from walking the few hundred feet to the hospital for at least 30 minutes as authorities waited for the president’s motorcade to pass by, witness Carrie Clifford told TheBlaze early Thursday morning. (I blame the local authorities. Maybe the Secret Service. Don't think Obama ordered it. ~Bob)

The spine, near the top and bottom, was tattered and embossed in gold with the title and author's name near the top and 'Blue Ribbon Books' at the bottom. The back cover was plain.

The Moment of Truth on Corporate Welfare: By choosing to end the Export-Import Bank, the GOP can zero out a destructive government program. By John Fund
Excerpt: It seems like decades since Republicans have been able to permanently zero out a government program of any size. The tea-party base often doesn’t take seriously the GOP’s commitment to shrinking government and has accused the GOP of ladling out benefits to the elite and well connected. If Republicans in Congress simply do nothing, the New Deal–era Export-Import Bank, which guarantees loans so that American multinationals can sell products overseas, will vanish at the end of September. (Every government program has a vocal minority who benefit from it, and will fight like hell to keep it, while the majority who pay for it are apathetic. So government grows until it collapses of its own weight. ~Bob)

Michael Moore, Wife Tangle Over Divorce Dollars. Director claims spouse squandered funds on mansion
Excerpt: With his divorce trial looming, Michael Moore is battling his wife over the valuation of the couple’s assets, while branding her a spendthrift who “unilaterally wasted a large percentage of the marital funds” building a lakefront mansion that has prompted mocking news stories about the activist filmmaker’s wealth. (Poor guy. Lets all chip in to send him a daily supper-sized cheeseburger, fries and shake. ~Bob)

Florida pol reportedly pushing plan to require students to watch D'Souza film
Excerpt: A Florida lawmaker reportedly plans to propose a bill requiring local schools to show students the newly released documentary from conservative filmmaker and Obama critic Dinesh D'Souza. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Republican state Sen. Alan Hays wants to make the film “America” required viewing for public high schools and middle schools, barring parental objection.

Psychiatrist uses his own gun to shoot patient who killed caseworker in front of him
Excerpt: A Pennsylvania doctor is being hailed a hero today after he seriously injured a patient who went on a shooting spree in his office. Dr. Lee Silverman, a psychiatrist, told police that the patient, identified as Richard Plotts, fatally shot a caseworker at their hospital complex before the doctor pulled out his own gun and exchanged fire with him and wounded him, a prosecutor said Thursday night.

Excerpt: While President Obama decries gun violence and presses for more laws to restrict ownership, his Justice Department has prosecuted 25 percent fewer cases referred by the main law enforcement agency charged with reducing firearms violence across the country, a computer analysis of U.S. prosecution data shows. (Might it be that a large umber of gun violators are what AG Eric (With)Holder calls "my people"? ~Bob)

Death Tax Hurts Small Businesses and Minorities
A number of associations that form the Family Business Coalition recently wrote a letter to Congressmen Dave Camp (R-MI) and Kevin Brady (R-TX), asking for a vote on a bill sponsored by Rep. Brady, H.R. 2429 -- the Death Tax Repeal Act. The letter cited many of the problems with the law that taxes a deceased's assets at death: Repealing the death tax would add almost 1 million new small business jobs, according to a study by Douglas Holtz-Eakin, former director of the Congressional Budget Office. Such job creation would reduce unemployment by almost 1 percentage point. ...The tax hits minorities especially hard. According to a study from two Boston College professors, the death tax will reduce net African American wealth by 13 percent. A 2004 poll from Impacto Group found that half of all Hispanic business owners know someone who sold their business to pay the death tax. One quarter expect to sell their own business because of the tax. Two-thirds of likely voters support permanent repeal of the death tax.

Excerpt: Imaginative satirical posters mocking President Obama appeared yesterday in various locations of Silicon Valley, where the president was scheduled to speak at yet another fundraiser with California’s rich and powerful on Wednesday, in spite of all the troubles piling up, domestically and internationally. ... In addition to the posters, an “invitation” flyer was mailed to all neighbors within the half-mile radius of the host’s home in Los Altos Hills. Describing the fundraiser as “A Feast in Time of Plague,” the mock invitation pointed to the frightening gap between the increasingly entrenched political elites and the harsh reality of joblessness, insecurity, and loss of incomes for the rest of us.

Excerpt: For six years I've read that the Clintons and the Obamas hate each other. I've even heard it from liberal rags like The Huffington Post, The Washington Post and The Hill. The Clintons and Obamas have had to do this kabuki dance with razor sharp knives, trying mightily not to clash in order to save their political ambitions. Then, this week we learned that Slick Willie actually hated Obama so much for stealing Hillary's 2008 throne that he threw his allegiance to John McCain. In his book "Clinton Inc" Daniel Halper writes about the long term enmity between the Clintons and Obama. Halper writes that Bill Clinton initiated a series of calls to John McCain telling him how to defeat Barry. McCain confirms the calls, relates that Clinton gave him campaign advice, but stops short of furnishing the details.

City Refuses to Pay For Obama Fundraising
Excerpt: The city of Medina, Wash. says it won’t be paying for President Obama’s Tuesday evening fundraising visit. According to Medina City Manager Mike Sauerwein, prior presidential visits have cost local residents as much as $35,000 due to security related issues; but not anymore. (ALL political fundraisers should be paid for by their respective parties. --JB. $35K? That's the cost of one dinner at at an event to hear BO bash income inequality! ~Bob)

WaPo Fact Checker: Do 10,000 baby boomers retire every day?
Excerpt: “Each day,10,000 baby boomers retire and begin receiving Medicare and Social Security benefits.” –Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), writing in The Wall Street Journal, July 22, 2014. A reader asked about this line in Sen. Portman’s article, which warned of a looming budget crisis because of growth in entitlements. Could this figure possibly be true? ... Portman is on solid ground with this number. He earns a coveted—and rare—Geppetto Checkmark.

This pistol-packing 80-year-old was attacked by home intruders — who immediately regretted it. By Matt Naham,
Excerpt: 80-year-old Tom Greer of Long Beach California arrived home Tuesday night to find a couple robbing his house. A man and a woman were rummaging through his things, including a safe. The robbers attacked Greer when he went inside. ... What the intruders didn’t know is that Greer had a .22-caliber Smith and Wesson revolver.

It Appears a New York Times Writer Wants Orthodox Christian and Islamic Views Stamped Out. “Ruthlessly.” By Erick Erickson
Excerpt: Who will rid Josh Barro of these turbulent priests? Barro is a writer at the New York Times. He has taken to twitter to proclaim that “anti-LGBT attitudes are terrible” and “we need to stamp them out, ruthlessly.” ... In order to “stamp out” these attitudes “ruthlessly” society will have to go where only totalitarian societies like to go. But then the totalitarianism of the left knows no bounds when it comes to “tolerance.”

Worth Reading: How Our World Fell Apart. By Ed Klein
Excerpt: Wherever we look today—from the Fertile Crescent in the Middle East to the post-Cold War frontier in Ukraine to the South China Sea to our border with Mexico— our world appears to be falling apart. This naturally raises a serious question in the minds of many people: If America, the indispensable nation, had been doing its job of holding the global system together, couldn’t this chaos and anarchy have been avoided? The simple answer is, yes.

Excerpt: A police chief in Wisconsin pleaded no contest Friday to a charge that he signed a local tea party leader up on gay dating, pornography and federal health care websites. Prosecutors charged Town of Campbell Police Chief Tim Kelemen earlier this month with one misdemeanor count of unlawful use of a computerized communication system. The La Crosse Tribune reported ( ) Kelemen entered the plea in a deal that calls for the charge to be dismissed in two years if he doesn't commit any new crimes, continues counseling and completes 40 hours of community service. Lois Lerner’s Hard Drive Was ‘Scratched’ Then ‘Shredded’
Excerpt: Ex-IRS official Lois Lerner’s computer hard drive was “scratched” and the data on it was still recoverable. But the IRS did not try to recover the data from Lerner’s hard drive, despite recommendations from in-house IRS IT experts to outsource the recovery project.
The hard drive was then “shredded,” according to a court filing the IRS made to House Ways and Means Committee investigators. (Obstruction of justice., Must have been some pretty incriminating emails. ~Bob)
Excerpt: We were sitting at the kitchen table when I lowered the morning paper an inch and told my wife about Obama's impending "I know you're hiding something tax." The Anointed One, assuming all capitalists are cheats, is considering imposing a 3% tax on both pension and ordinary income in order to capture taxes on wealth greedy Americans are hiding somewhere around the home.

Worth Reading: Obama to World: Drop Dead: Thee most provincial U.S. president in at least a century.
Excerpt: "Meet the Press" Sunday whether this was the lowest moment in U.S.-Russia relations since the Cold War, America's robo-Secretary of State John Kerry replied: "We live in an extremely complicated world right now, where everybody is working on 10 different things simultaneously." Well, not everyone. s the world burns, the president spent this week fiddling at fundraisers in the living rooms of five Democratic Party fat cats in Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles. As White House communications director Jennifer Palmieri famously explained, changing the president's fundraising schedule "can have the unintended consequence of unduly alarming the American people or creating a false sense of crisis." (I am really taken back to see this article appear in the Wall Street Journal. They do tend to run conservative articles there on occasion, but never before one as direct and acidic as this one. Yet Henninger is only quoting facts, the world is oversupplied right now with conflict, brutality, oppression, and tragedy, and those who are the ones doing the killing do not seem to have any reasons to stop. And we, once the nation that tried, however imperfectly, to act to help those being oppressed and murdered, are sitting out these events. Our national leader is clearly not terribly interested in things outside this country, and is clearly very focussed on the politics of keeping his Party in power to the exclusion of much else. Ronald Reagan was not quite the super President in all ways that some remember him now, but there is no doubt whatsoever in my mind that he would be handling these situations in totally different ways. Ways that we as Americans, could take some pride in. --Del)

Busted: Obamacare Architect Caught in Epic Lie, Confirming Opponents' Argument. by Guy Benson
Excerpt: "If you're a state and you don't set up an exchange, that means your citizens don't get their tax credits." He affirmed conservatives' argument in 2012 by sharing his own expertise about the law as it's written. Then, when his own explanation became politically problematic, he reversed positions, shamelessly arguing that "literally" nobody had ever intended to make the case that he himself had explicitly laid out. (If the President was willing to lie repeatedly to get obamacare through, the least his sycophants can do is to lie to protect it. ~Bob)

Worth Reading: No, Halbig Did Not Gut Obamacare Because Of A “Drafting Error. ”Reading is fundamental, unless you're a liberal blogger. By Sean Davis
Excerpt: Most important, we have the sections of the law providing for tax credits to help offset the cost of Obamacare’s health care plans: sections 1401, 1402, 1411, 1412, 1413, 1414, and 1415. And how do those sections establish authority to provide those tax credits? Why, they specifically state ten separate times that tax credits are available to offset the costs of state health exchange plans authorized by section 1311. And how many times are section 1321 federal exchange plans mentioned? Zero. Was that yet another “drafting error”?.. Because here's Gruber giving a presentation in 2012: ... I think what's important to remember politically about this, is if you're a state and you don't set up an exchange, that means your citizens don't get their tax credits. (When I was elected to the Massachusetts Senate in 1972, the Highway Aid formula contained the phrase "half cent per mile" in two places, one a typo admitted by everyone. but it was enforced, with some cities and towns getting more money than intended, some less. The fight to fix it took years. ~Bob. "You'd have to have a heart of stone not to laugh at the unraveling of Obamacare." --Jonah Goldberg)

Americans Say Obamacare Is Hurting Families. By Matthew Vadum
Excerpt: The American people hate Obamacare and recognize the lasting damage it is inflicting, according to a new national poll. Americans seem to recognize that the Obamacare law will boot people out of their health care plans, encourage idleness, drive wages down, increase the government’s tax take, and fail to put a dent in the number of Americans without health insurance coverage.

A Newfound Respect For The Law. By Rep. Derek Hunter
Excerpt: I thought of that quote when I heard White House Spokesman Josh Earnest say, “It is pretty obvious what the congressional intent was.” He was talking about the D.C. Court of Appeals ruling that Obamacare subsidies apply only to states that set up exchanges because, well, that’s what the text of the Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act says. The Obama administration, it seems, has a newfound respect for the intent of lawmakers. (I once had a bureaucrat say to me, "well, Senator, the legislative intent was..." I replied, "I was the sponsor of that Bill--I'll tell you what the legislative intent was!" ~Bob)

Supreme Court may not protect Obamacare this time. By Ruth Marcus
Excerpt: Don’t be so sure that the Supreme Court is going to save Obamacare. Again. The question is enormously important: Are health-care consumers entitled to subsidies if they buy coverage on insurance exchanges established by the federal government, as they are with insurance from state exchanges?

Obama Creates the Stamp Act for Healthcare. By John Ransom
Excerpt: Obamacare is what we have always said it was. It’s not just bad policy; it’s now proven to be poor law too.

Obamacare enrollees faking for freebies: The subsidies are a hit with patients who don’t exist
Excerpt: Anyone interested in $2,700 worth of Obamacare subsidies need only tick a few boxes on a government form and tell a few lies to get the discount. That was the finding of Government Accountability Office (GAO) investigators who went undercover to find out what happens when fake applications are submitted to, or given to a counselor on the Obamacare telephone hotline.

Maybe Democrats Should Have Read Obamacare Before They Passed It. By Kevin Glass
Excerpt: But this gets to the heart of the problem with ACA: many legislators didn't know what they were crafting and voting on. In the era of ACA's crafting, Republicans repeatedly brought up the point that legislators couldn't read the bill, because the legislative text hadn't been written. The Senate Finance Committee voted on what's called "conceptual langauge," but did anticipate that some states would not set up their own exchanges. Democrats also insisted that the "conceptual language" was enough to actually understand and vote on the law. Max Baucus (D-Montana), chair of the Senate Finance Committee through which the health bill flowed, insisted that reading the law wasn't necessary. (See next video. ~Bob)

Will Obamacare Cost You Your Job? By John C. Goodman
Excerpt: Why is our recovery from the Great Recession so sluggish and so slow?
Economists are increasingly focusing on Barack Obama’s signature legislative accomplishment: the Affordable Care Act, popularly known as ObamaCare. Although generally thought of as a measure to insure the uninsured, health reform is affecting the entire labor market in negative ways.

Flashback: WH, Dems Killed Bill to Strengthen Obamacare Eligibility Verification. By Guy Benson
Excerpt: Prior to last year's government shutdown, House Republicans passed a series of Obamacare-related bills over the adamant objections of most Democrats. One bill, called the 'No Subsidies Without Verification Act,' sailed through the House 235-191, with every single 'no' vote being furnished by Democrats. Only five members of President Obama's party backed this common-sense measure -- which, needless to say, died in Harry Reid's Senate.

Kerry, Aides Undergo Metal Detector Screening Before Meeting With Egyptian President
Excerpt: Reuters reports that Kerry and his aides were checked with a metal detector. Security personnel reportedly raised a handheld metal-detector wand to Kerry’s suit jacket before waving him through. (Maybe they knew Kerry got a Silver Star for killing one wounded VC. " We do know that Sen. Kerry dealt with an already wounded Viet Cong because his forward gunner, the late Tom Bellodeau said, "You know, I shot that guy. He jumped up, he looked right at me, I looked at him. ... Sen. Kerry himself confirms the VC guerilla had already been wounded when he told the Boston Globe in June of 2003 that "Tommy clipped him, and he started going [down.] I thought it was over." [] if killing one VC get you a Silver Star, half the Marine Grunts in Nam deserve one. ~Bob)

Worth Reading: Why There Can Never be 'Peace in the Middle East.' By Larry Elder
Excerpt: Hamas' covenant calls for the destruction of Israel. The preamble reads: "Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it." Article Three describes the duty of all Muslims: "(To) fear Allah and raise the banner of Jihad in the face of the oppressors." Article Seven states: "The Day of Judgment will not come about until Muslims fight Jews and kill them.

Excerpt: The terrorist army formerly known as ISIS has conquered about a third of Syria and much of western Iraq. What are these jihadists going to do next? Assuming they can’t go to Disneyland -- and, trust me, that’s high on their bucket list -- Baghdad would doubtless be their destination of choice. But despite a series of bombings last weekend that killed more than two dozen people, the predominately Shia capital is unlikely to fall easily as did such Sunni-majority cities as Mosul. So the question being asked is whether these warriors will turn their lethal attentions toward Jordan.

Why Qatar and Turkey Can’t Solve the Crisis in Gaza. By David Andrew Weinberg, Jonathan Schanzer
Excerpt: With Washington desperate for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, and with Egypt having flamed out as a broker of calm, two of Hamas’s top patrons are about to be rewarded with a high-profile diplomatic victory. U.S. and Israeli media are now reporting that the White House may be looking to Qatar and Turkey to help negotiate an end to the hostilities.

Israel refuses invitation to commit suicide, snubs the irrelevant Kerry. By Jennifer Rubin
Excerpt: Surely Secretary of State John Kerry knows of the extensive labyrinth of tunnels in Gaza. Surely he knows that far beyond the rockets these pose a mortal threat to Israel that no country would accept. And surely he knows that the Israeli military is meticulously searching and destroying the tunnels and that this will take time, perhaps weeks and not days. Then why in the world would he publicly offer a truce proposal, especially one purportedly dressed up with some pro-Hamas goodies from Qatar? One explanation is that he is foolish beyond our wildest imagination, entirely disconnected from reality. (Kerry's been wrong about everything since Vietnam. ~Bob)

Excerpt: Missiles over and into Israel. Violent demonstrations in London, Paris and Vienna. Violent demonstrators in Boston and on innumerable university campuses. Calls of "Death to the Jews." When the Jews respond, whether by assaulting Gazan missile sites and tunnels, or by throwing chairs and bottles against Parisian demonstrators trying to break into a synagogue, they are accused of excessive violence. So what should they do?

Hamas Rockets Found in UN School Again
Excerpt: Hamas' attempts to minimize attention on its strategy of using civilian areas as a base of operations for rocket fire and other terrorism took a hit Tuesday when a United Nations relief organization found rockets stored in one of their schools for the second time in a week.

Op-Ed: The Hate-Wave All Over the Islamicized West: Welcome to the Middle Ages. By Dr. Inna Rogatchi
Excerpt: The wave of anti-Israel and anti-Semitic hatred has sprung all over Europe readily seizing the pretext of the completely justified Israeli military operation in Gaza. Mass demonstrations in London and the other cities of the United Kingdom, violent riots in Paris, ‘Kristallnacht’-style attacks on synagogues in France, Ireland and Poland, public hate preaches of imam calling for the death ‘the Jews until the last one’ in Berlin, abrasive threats to Jewish people in Denmark and Sweden; all this amassing daily.... What we are experiencing today in Europe and the West, is a wave of articulated hatred towards Jews, and Israel, in that order; and also a substantially higher arrogant confidence on the part of the attackers and demonstrators. ...This is the result of the more than 25 years of extremely short-sighted and inept policy, or actually, absence of firm stand and articulated policy of the European and Western governments on the issue on militant Islam’ spreading and planting roots in the West.

Hamas Claims Rockets Only Target Jews
Excerpt: Hamas officials are notorious for making incendiary statements and anti-Semitic comments. In fact, their charter calls for the destruction of the Jewish state and the murder of Jews around the world. The terrorist organization's vendetta is not solely based on Israel's control of post-1967 territories, considering Hamas calls for the liberation of "historic Palestine" in its entirety.
Excerpt: There are few certainties in life, but one that you can reliably count on is that the United Nations will condemn Israel every chance it gets. Between 2006 when the UN’s so-called Human Right Council was established until 2013, the “humanitarians” on the council condemned Israel 45 times.

Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian held in Iran
Excerpt: An American reporter for the Washington Post and his wife have been detained in Tehran, an Iranian official confirmed. Jason Rezaian, a 38-year-old dual Iran-US citizen, and his Iranian wife Yeganeh Salehi, were taken into custody on Tuesday evening, the paper said. Two freelance photographers, also US citizens, were being held too. (Liberals will avert their eyes and repeat from the catechism, "All cultures are equally valid." ~Bob)

2 Foreign Aid Workers Are Gunned Down in Afghanistan, Officials Say
Excerpt: Two Western women employed by an international aid organization were shot dead Thursday morning in the western city of Herat, Afghan officials said. The women were traveling in a taxi in the city center when a motorcyclist opened fire on them, said Sami Wafa, an aide to the governor of Herat Province. (Herat is known as a city of poets...~Bob)

Netanyahu Is Winning: His strategy to divide Hamas and Fatah, and strengthen the latter, seems to be working. By Tom Rogan
Excerpt: As Clausewitz famously noted, “War is the continuation of policy by other means.” Correspondingly, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has had two objectives. First, to degrade and deter Hamas rocket teams. Second, to weaken Hamas as a political actor. On both counts, Israel appears to be finding success.

US and Islamic State: ‘We did see this coming.’ By Jonathan S. Landay
Excerpt: Like the rest of the world, the U.S. government appeared to have been taken aback last month when Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, fell to an offensive by jihadis of the Islamic State that triggered the collapse of five Iraqi army divisions and carried the extremists to the threshold of Baghdad. A review of the record shows, however, that the Obama administration wasn’t surprised at all.

Israel must be permitted to crush Hamas. By Michael Oren
Excerpt: Michael Oren was Israel’s ambassador to the United States from 2009 to 2013. He currently is a fellow at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya and the Atlantic Council. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-MoonSecretary of State John Kerry and the foreign ministers of Great Britain and France all are rushing to achieve a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. Their motive — to end civilian suffering and restore stability to the area — is noble. The images of the wounded and dead resulting from the conflict are indeed agonizing. However, these senior statesmen can be most helpful now by doing nothing. To preserve the values they cherish and to send an unequivocal message to terrorist organizations and their state sponsors everywhere, Israel must be permitted to crush Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The Moral Chasm Between Israel and Hamas. By James T. Conway
Gen. Conway, who retired in 2010, was the 34th commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Excerpt: Although American empathy for noncombatants is a critical component of who we are as a people, it should not blind us to reality: Israel's military exists to protect its civilian population and seeks to avoid harming noncombatants, while its adversary cynically uses Palestinian civilians as human shields while deliberately targeting Israeli civilians. I recently had the opportunity to see for myself the moral chasm between how the Israeli Defense Forces and Hamas treat civilians during military operations. In May I joined a dozen other retired U.S. generals and admirals on a trip to Israel with the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs. Just outside Hamas-ruled Gaza, we toured a tunnel discovered less than one kilometer from an Israeli kindergarten. Unlike tunnels that I had seen during the Iraq war that were designed for smuggling, this Hamas tunnel was designed for launching murder and kidnapping raids. The 3-mile-long tunnel was reinforced with concrete, lined with telephone wires, and included cabins unnecessary for infiltration operations but useful for holding hostages.

The UN’s Propaganda War Against Israel. By Joseph Klein
Excerpt: As usual, the United Nations has the Palestinians’ back while repeatedly stabbing Israel in the back. Hamas not only uses civilian human shields in Gaza to protect its operatives and weapons. It hides behind the diplomatic propaganda shield that the UN too willingly provides.

Satire Worth Reading: A Thank You Letter From Hamas to the Media. By Noah Beck
Excerpt: Dear Members of the Mainstream Media, You’ve been awesome! Everyone knows that we start unwinnable wars with Israel because the real victory happens when you predictably side with us each time. And you’ve been so supportive of our strategy that we really want to acknowledge your helpfulness. In particular, we thank you for: -Focusing so much more on our suffering than anyone else’s. Nigerians must die in far greater numbers before you take notice, so we’re glad that you value our lives so much more.

Shockingly, Yildirim said the objective of sending the human shields is to spark a war between Israel and Turkey and the broader Muslim world.

Amid France synagogue attacks, support for Jewish self-defense group on the rise. By Cnaan Liphshiz
Excerpt: Shortly before their synagogue became shrouded by tear gas and smoke, 100 Jews wielding baseball bats and clubs were singing the French national anthem in front of the synagogue’s heavy metal gate. They had gathered outside the main synagogue in this Paris suburb Sunday to defend it against a predominantly Arab mob of 200 men who had gathered nearby with sticks and stones, setting garbage cans aflame and chanting “Slaughter the Jews.”

Excerpt: The Belgian League Against Anti-Semitism, or LBCA, filed the complaint Wednesday with the mayor of Saint-Nicolas against the parties responsible for hanging a Turkish- and French-language sign at a cafe in the Liege suburb. The Turkish text reads, “Dogs are allowed in this establishment but Jews are not under any circumstances.” The French text replaces “Jews” with “Zionists.”

(Liberals won't mind because, you know, "All cultures are equally valid." ~Bob)

Excerpt: "Once again, this Council fails to address the situation in Israel and in the Palestinian territories with any semblance of balance. There is no mention of indiscriminate rocket attacks by Hamas into Israel or the tunnels used to cause mayhem.” It is good to see someone from the Obama Administration actually speaking the truth about Israel.

Three Questions for Hamas Terrorist Apologists. By Matthew Clark
Excerpt: Most of us who understand Israel is under attack and has a right to defend itself as a nation have run into these Hamas apologists among acquaintances or on social media. Here are three simple questions you can pose to cut through the disinformation. In most cases they will quickly illicit responses that will either show their naivety or intentional misrepresentation of the facts.

Casualties in Perspective. By Ari Lieberman
Excerpt: Thus far, 32 members of Israel’s Defense Forces have been tragically killed while defending their homeland. Hamas has likely suffered more than 10 times that amount but that will be confirmed after the dust settles when an objective analysis, unmuddied by Hamas shills, can be performed . Every one of those IDF boys represents the salt of the earth but now is not the time for despondency. Now is the time for fortitude and perseverance.

How Amnesty Will Harm U.S. Support for Israel. By Ian Smith
Excerpt: But depending on how the US manages its southern borders in the years ahead, broad support for Israel may not always be a sure thing. The number of Hispanics in America, both legal and illegal, has almos tquadrupled since the last census in 2010. The level of support for Israel among this rapidly-expanding demographic, however, is at polar opposites with groups like traditional conservatives, the strongest supporters of Israel in the US, outside American Jews. (All the more reason for liberals to support amnesty. they get millions of welfare-dependent votes and the power to get rid of those pesky Jews. A twofer. ~Bob)

Report: French Jews Mass Immigrate to Israel to Escape Persecution. By Daniel Doherty
Excerpt: But perhaps the worst rioting and targeting of Jews has occurred in places like France. In fact, the safety and security of the Jewish people there feel so threatened that, as Weasel Zippers sharply noted, Jews would “rather live in an actual war zone” than a nation at peace. Indeed. That gives you some idea of the degree to which the Jews of Europe are now fearing for their lives:

The Reasons Why Israel's Military Is In Such A Tough Fight
Excerpt: Yet for the third time in the past decade, Israel's powerful military finds itself in a protracted, messy fight with a small, elusive, Islamist group and has been unable to score a quick and decisive victory. The current bloodletting between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip is nearly three weeks old and Israel has pounded the Palestinian territory, leaving more than 800 Palestinians dead, most of them civilians. Yet Israel has not halted the Hamas rockets and is still working to destroy a tunnel network it's cited as the main reason for the operation. (Bogged down after three weeks? I'm glad NPR didn't cover WWII! ~Bob. My concern is that, even if Israel destroys all of the tunnels and many rocket launching sites and kills a fair number of Hamas soldiers, this will only gain a temporary respite from the rocket attacks. After all, tunnels can be rebuilt and more rockets brought in and the propaganda value of dead Arab civilians (and dead Israeli soldiers) means Hamas will have no trouble recruiting new fighters. And now Judea and Samaria are rising and Hamas, which was becoming unpopular in Gaza because it couldn't improve the economy, is more popular there than ever and threatens to blow Abbas and his crowd away in the next West Bank election. --PM)

Boston Islamist: The Jews Better Learn How to Swim, Moses Ain't Coming [VIDEO]
Excerpt: "This time...Moses is not going to be here to open the sea...they better learn how to swim"

Excerpt: Astonishing, open, and unashamed Jew-hatred and blood libel — we are seeing it all over the world. But the UN and the global “human rights community” is too busy condemning Israel and conducting studies about how to eradicate “Islamophobia” to take any notice.

Excerpt: A violent mob of more than a dozen men in France assaulted a Jew at his home in a Paris suburb after confirming that his photograph had been published by a French Facebook page identifying Jews to be targeted for physical intimidation, The Union of Jewish Students of France, the UEJF, said in a statement on Friday. (The French shopped something like 70,000 Jews to the Nazis in WWII. Why expect different now? ~Bob)
