Today's Political News & Comment

Lung debridement surgery Monday, so thought I'd better post what I had, so you wouldn't be deprived if they decide to keep me a while. I'm supposed to go home the same day, but one never knows. ~Bob

Ukraine mobilizes after Putin's 'declaration of war'
Excerpt: Ukraine mobilized for war on Sunday and Washington threatened to isolate Russia economically, after President Vladimir Putin declared he had the right to invade his neighbor, creating Moscow's biggest confrontation with the West since the Cold War.

Putin gets permission to use military
Excerpt: Russian parliament grants President Vladimir Putin permission to mobilize the country's military in Ukraine one day after President Obama said “there will be costs” if Russia intervenes militarily.

Russian forces seize Crimea; Ukraine’s interim president decries ‘aggression’
Excerpt: Russian troops took control of vital installations across the Crimean Peninsula on Saturday, and Russian President Vladimir Putin secured authorization to send in more as the Kremlin set the stage for a high-stakes international showdown over the future of Ukraine.

Excerpt: President Obama had no public events on his schedule today, yet skipped a meeting of his national security team at the White House today as they huddled over the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Seen leaving the meeting at the White House were Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper,  Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey, and CIA Director John Brennan.

Hundreds of gunmen surround Ukraine military base
Excerpt: Hundreds of unidentified gunmen surrounded a Ukrainian infantry base in Privolnoye in its Crimea region Sunday. The convoy included at least 13 troop vehicles each containing 30 soldiers and four armored vehicles with mounted machine guns. The vehicles -- which have Russian license plates -- have surrounded the base and are blocking Ukrainian soldiers from entering or leaving it. Ukrainian soldiers, with clips in their weapons, have positioned a tank at the gate.

Or what? ~Bob. Excerpt: President Barack Obama asked Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday afternoon to return his troops to their barracks and to remove his forces from Ukraine.  However, Obama didn’t threaten or promise significant retaliation if Putin continued his advance into the majority-Russian parts of the Ukraine, according to a White House statement about their 90-minute phone call…The Saturday call and the statement came the same day that Obama symbolically washed his hands of Ukraine by having his deputies announce to the media that he had skipped a Saturday national security council meeting on the Russian invasion

Excerpt: During the 2008 presidential campaign, Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin warned that if Senator Barack Obama were elected president, his "indecision" and "moral equivalence" may encourage Russia's Vladimir Putin to invade Ukraine

About Some Presidents - Briefly. By Andy Weddington
Excerpt: This morning's brief commentary awakened me from sleep (this morning). As best I recall and in keeping with Mr. Pulitzer's opening thought ... "Put it briefly before them so they will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it, and, above all, accurately so they will be guided by its light."

Ban Assault Knives!: Chinese authorities say two WOMEN were part of knife-wielding terror gang which left at least 33 dead and 143 wounded after attacking a train station in China
Guess their religion. ~Bob. Excerpt: Two of the knife-wielding attackers who killed 29 people and injured 143 in a frenzied attack at a Chinese railway station yesterday were women, according to state TV. The attackers, four of whom were killed by armed police, launched the horrific attack at Kunming railway station in Yunnan province at around 9pm local time yesterday.

Lowest Income Families Will Owe Thousands in ObamaCare Taxes
Excerpt: Even the lowest-income families will owe $7,000 in ObamaCare taxes over the next 10 years, says Chris Conover, a research scholar at the Center for Health Policy and Inequalities Research at Duke University. President Obama's promise not to raise taxes on any family earning less than $250,000 was broken as soon as ObamaCare was enacted. The law has 21 different taxes -- intended to raise over $1 trillion -- but only 30 percent of those taxes will actually be paid solely by the "rich" (singles earning $200,000 or couples earning $250,000).

Obama's Interior Secretary to Dying Eskimos: "I've listened to your stories, now I have to listen to the animals." By Daniel Greenfield
Excerpt: King George III was a tyrant who talked to trees. Eventually we got around to replacing him with tyrants who talk to animals. In one of Alaska’s most remote outposts, where a thousand hardy souls make their homes, the Obama administration has put the fate of birds and bears above the lives of people, blocking construction of an 11-mile gravel trail connecting a tiny fishing hamlet to a life-saving airport.

Surprise! GOP lawmakers move to ban welfare money at marijuana dispensaries
Excerpt: Republican lawmakers plan to introduce legislation next week aimed at preventing the misuse of the food stamp funds amid reports that welfare debit cards have been used to withdraw cash at ATMs at marijuana dispensaries in Colorado. (Huh. Using welfare money to buy drugs. I'm shocked. In my experience, druggies tend to steal their drug money, if they can't sell their bodies. ~Bob)

After Repeal of Obamacare: Moving to Patient-Centered, Market-Based Health Care
Abstract: Obamacare moves American health care in the wrong direction by eroding the doctor–patient relationship, centralizing control, and increasing health costs. True health care reform would empower individuals, with their doctors, to make their own health care decisions free from government interference. Therefore, Obamacare should be stopped and fully repealed. Then Congress and the states should enact patient-centered, market-based reforms that better serve Americans. For a better life, Americans need a health care system that they, not the government, control. (Very well thought out ideas on how to really give Americans a better health plan. --Del)

Nigeria: Nuns may be among victims of suspected Boko Haram attack
Excerpt: Gunmen armed with rocket propelled grenades and explosives descended on Kirchiga Village before turning their weapons on Shuwari, Shuwa and Michika Town. At least 28 people were killed and an unknown number injured. The Nigerian station Channels TV reported that three Catholic churches were set ablaze in Michika Town and that three Catholic nuns may be among the victims.

Excerpt: In a Friday sermon in Tehran, Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati addressed the Iranian leaders, saying: “If we, the people, are against America, you must oppose it too.” “Death to America is the first option on our table,” said Jannati, and the crowds responded with chants of “Death to America.”

Muslim boys’ school bans women from applying for job as science teacher
Excerpt: An Islamic school has advertised for a new science teacher but ruled out female applicants.

excerpt: President Obama graduated from Harvard Law School.  He's surely an expert on Government Law.  How else could he have managed to circumvent the Constitution by using Executive Privelege to cover his mistakes, appoint 40 plus "Czars" to by pass Congress and issue "edicts" on laws he will impose and those he opts not to enforce.  However, I'm pretty sure Harvard Business School has eliminated Economics as prerequisites for a law degree.  That's the only explanation I can find for Obama's bizarre economic policies.

Reid stops minimum-wage hike bill after Dems balk
Excerpt: So much for changing the narrative in 2014 from the ObamaCare debacle. Democrats, led by Barack Obama, planned to go on offense over the minimum-wage rate to cast the GOP as heartless. But in his rush to the barricades, Harry Reid belatedly discovered that his caucus didn’t like the fight nearly as much as he and Obama did (via Instapundit):

Excerpt: “The Hindus are lacing it with pig’s blood to send us all to hell.” That people believe this kind of thing is amazing in itself, but it is encouraged in the mosques, where hatred and contempt of the unbelievers, the “most vile of created beings” (Qur’an 98:6) is inculcated on a regular basis. Muslim leaders in Pakistan bear the responsibility, as they do not confront this hatred or do anything to stop it.

Excerpt: In a recent TV interview, Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, said that Iran had “got more than it gave” in the Joint Plan of Action, signed in November by Iran and the 5+1, and that Iran’s nuclear commitments were “temporary and non-obligatory.” “The commitments made by Iran can be retracted,” he stressed.

Excerpt: Five years after the passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the biggest fiscal stimulus in the nation’s history, the debate over its success hasn’t changed very much. ... All of this should sound rather familiar to those who’ve followed the stimulus debate, because it’s more or less what the two parties have been saying for years. One reason why I suspect the debate has changed so little is that it’s very hard to determine with great certainty what, exactly, the stimulus really did. That’s why I think the best way to judge the stimulus as a whole is to say that we don’t really know how well it worked—but that it didn’t live up to some of the promises that were made when it was passed.

Excerpt: The oil and gas boom is producing millions of jobs, and not just where you might expect. Employment is up 40% in the oil and gas fields since the recession began in late 2007. But in every one of the 10 states where hydrocarbon production is on the rise, overall employment growth has outperformed the nation. (Obama opposes this but takes credit for the job growth. ~Bob)

Society in every state is a blessing, but Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one. --Thomas Paine

There's been a serious expansion of the Medicaid program recently, which Mr. Obama has hailed as more people getting good heath care than ever before.  But the program is not exactly free, or free of problems.  It's been sold on the basis of a bunch of ideas that turn out to be myths.  Here they are explained.

10 Myths About the Obamacare Medicaid Expansion
As Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion is being debated in the states, many myths are being perpetuated by its advocates. Here, Heritage provides the research to debunk such myths:
1. Myth: Expanding Medicaid is “free money” for the states. Reality: The expansion adds an estimated $638 billion in new government spending from 2013–2023. New spending at the federal or state level is reckless in light of the country’s trillion dollar budget deficits and over $16 trillion in national debt. (So it becomes clear that adding many millions to Medicaid is not really a great solution to social problems, and we can extrapolate that to the expansion of Food Stamps as well.  These programs start out with a good idea, but when overdone, they just freeze people into what we call poverty in this country, and discourage some from really seeking to improve themselves while allowing others to take advantage of social programs so as to lead less stressful lives, not worrying about every doing any better.  I'm not sure that is what even generous Americans want their tax dollars to be doing. --Del)

Ohio 8-year-old turns $20 into priceless gift
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/ohio-8-year-old-turns-20-into-priceless-gift/
Excerpt: And so, with his dad in mind, Myles wrapped the $20 in a note that read, "Dear Soldier -- my dad was a soldier. He's in heaven now. I found this 20 dollars in the parking lot when we got here. We like to pay it forward in my family. It's your lucky day! Thank you for your service. Myles Eckert, a gold star kid." (Speechless! --MM)

Patriot Activist Makes His Own List: The Home Addresses of CT Legislators Who Just Voted in Favor of Gun Control
Excerpt: Sometimes you just have to fight fire with fire. And that is exactly what Mike Vanderboegh has chosen to do.  The state of Connecticut wants to make a list – a list of gun owners.  So, Vanderboegh has created his own list – a list of those state legislators who are insisting that certain firearms be banned or registered.  If you recall, most of the gun owners who own these weapons have refused to register them,  with tens of thousands of residents engaging in an act of quiet civil disobedience.

Dear New York Times: Self-Defense is Not Vigilantism. By David French
Excerpt: Over at the New York Times ”Opinionator” blog, Firmin DeBrander, an associate professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art, takes issue with a post I wrote last year outlining the biblical and natural-law right of self-defense. My argument was rather simple: From the Noahic Covenant to the New Testament, there were ample biblical examples of self-defense being not only permitted but in some cases actually mandated. I also – borrowing from Jim Lindgren’s excellent work at the Volokh Conspiracy — quoted John Locke for the proposition that the right of self defense wasn’t just a biblical right but a right located in natural law.

VIDEO: China, Cuba, Russia, Saudi Arabia: Dictatorships Just Got Themselves Elected to the UN Human Rights Council. Get Them Out.
Excerpt: Ain’t it grand? Four Biggies – gang leaders when it comes to sitting on the chest of Individual Liberty and bashing her brains in with her very own torch – are now proud members of the corrupt UN’s Council on Human Rights.

Excerpt: Now that CNN showed Piers Morgan to an elevator and pointed him north, his abused staffers are coming forward to tell the story of what it was like working for a man who was a legend in his own mind. You’ll be shocked to hear that working with Piers Morgan was almost as much fun as working with Kim Jong Il.

Excerpt: All is well. Pay no attention to the Little Mogadishus growing across the country. This investigative report comes from Gates of Vienna which is doing the job that the FBI won’t do.

"Us as New York City Students Deserve Respect": The Results of Extravagant Education Overspending on Display.
Excerpt: Never mind, college will teach them how to read and write. Eighty percent of NYC graduates need to take remedial classes when they enter CUNY. This is why it is so important for our federal overlords to ensure that all Americans go to college. Obama nationalized the student loan industry to facilitate this objective. By the way, New York City public schools  spend  $10,560 per pupil per year. What do you need an education for when you can bring in that kind of money with a babysitting service?

ObamaCare Stars Fade. By Johnathan Easley and Elise Viebeck
Excerpt: It seems that not even the president’s most fervent and committed supporters want to get too close to ObamaCare. Some of Obama’s most powerful allies — figures including Oprah Winfrey, Bruce Springsteen and BeyoncĂ© — have stayed in the wings for the enrollment push. Less than a year ago, Jennifer Hudson, Amy Poehler, and representatives for Winfrey and Alicia Keys were guests at the White House to discuss a strategy to promote the healthcare law.

Fat Cats and Democrats. By Bruce Thornton
Excerpt: MIT professor Noam Chomsky, for example, one of the most prominent left-wing critics of America, has called capitalism a “grotesque catastrophe,” one “crafted to induce hopelessness, resignation, and despair.” Yet Chomsky, Schweitzer writes, is “himself a shrewd capitalist, worth millions, with money in the dreaded and evil stock market, and at least one tax haven to cut down on those pesky inheritance taxes that he says are so important.” Chomsky has set up an irrevocable trust to shelter his money, with his tax attorney and his daughter as trustees. Fans of redistributing wealth via the income tax like Chomsky are careful to make sure that somebody else pays for their political idealism.

In the Wall Street Journal, scientists condemn “spectacularly wrong” climate forecasting: Richard McNider and John Christy declare the climate consensus mistaken and scientific legitimacy misattributed.
Excerpt: “The truth, and this is frustrating for policy-makers,” declared John Christy in Nature four years ago, “is that scientists’ ignorance of the climate system is enormous.” Now he and fellow climate scientist Richard McNider have argued in the Wall Street Journal that widespread, perverse disregard of gross climate-modeling deficiencies is leading to acceptance of huge overestimates of warming, to needless regulation, to social harm, and to a clear need to invert common belief about climate-science legitimacy. ... Both authors are fellows of the American Meteorological Society. Both rank as distinguished professors at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. (They should know the penalty for blasphemy is death. In this case, probably academic death and funding death. More would speak, but the dollars would stop. ~Bob)

McNider and Christy: Why Kerry Is Flat Wrong on Climate Change
Excerpt: In a Feb. 16 speech in Indonesia, Secretary of State John Kerry assailed climate-change skeptics as members of the "Flat Earth Society" for doubting the reality of catastrophic climate change. ... But who are the Flat Earthers, and who is ignoring the scientific facts? In ancient times, the notion of a flat Earth was the scientific consensus, and it was only a minority who dared question this belief. We are among today's scientists who are skeptical about the so-called consensus on climate change.

Parts of Britain 'unrecognisable' due to immigration: UKIP leader
Excerpt: Parts of Britain have become "unrecognisable" due to mass immigration, the leader of the eurosceptic UK Independence Party told activists in a rallying cry ahead of European elections in May. Nigel Farage, speaking at UKIP's spring conference in Torquay on Friday, claimed the opening the UK's borders to migrants from new EU members in eastern Europe had damaged social cohesion across the country.

Excerpt:  Militants killed 12 members of the security escort for a polio vaccination team in northwest Pakistan on Saturday, detonating a roadside bomb before opening fire on their convoy, according to officials.

(The Islamic Republic of) Mauritania agrees to adopt roadmap to eradicate slavery
Excerpt: The United Nations envoy on modern-day slavery said on Thursday Mauritania had agreed to adopt a roadmap for eradicating the trade, which campaigners say remains widespread in the west African nation. The country was the last in the world to abolish slavery, in 1981, and since 2012 its practice has been officially designated a crime, but campaigners say the government has failed in the past to acknowledge the extent of the trade, with no official data available.

Excerpt: “Barbers in Toronto who refused to cut a woman’s hair have become the target of a human rights complaint, in a case that pits religious freedom against gender equality. (The liberals were hot about Christian businesses turning away gays in AZ--wonder if they will be as hot when it is Muslims. I personally thing if you offer services or products to the public, you should not discriminate. ~Bob)
