News for your weekend reading

The old Jarhead Blog is your one-stop-shop for political news and opinion. Please forward to friends who need to be informed. It is created by many readers who send me items for inclusion, which I would have likely missed or skipped. As always, I—and you—owe them thanks and appreciation. I post articles because I think they are of interest and will stimulate thought and discussion. Doing so doesn’t mean that I necessarily agree (or disagree) with every—or any—opinion in the posted article, or that I was able to verify the information presented, which is the responsibility of the author. I try not to post things that are false, or too far a stretch, regardless of the view point, but I don’t always succeed. As always on the Net, or in the legacy media, you must read critically and with skepticism.

I may be off-line. Have not included the LAX shooting,as updated frequently. Check the web. ~Bob

Excellent: JFK and the Seeds of Disaster in Vietnam. A U.S.-backed coup marked the triumph of politics over policy. By Mark Moyer, PhD
Excerpt: Fifty years ago Friday was the most important day of the Vietnam War, when South Vietnamese generals staged a coup against President Ngo Dinh Diem at the behest of the United States. By wrecking the South Vietnamese government, the coup—and Diem’s assassination soon after—set in motion the events that brought U.S. combat forces into Vietnam in 1965 and kept them there for seven years. Some of the mistakes and misdeeds that led to that day bear a disturbing similarity to current events. (Dr. Moyer, is a Harvard and Cambridge trained historian. ~Bob. Ngo Dinh Diem has been the victim of very bad press for a very long time, starting well over 50 years ago when reporters in Viet Nam focused on everything negative they could find about him and his governing, while neglecting the overall positive accomplishments of the man. Even the communists had deep respect for him, yet some Americans made it a project to undercut him at every turn. Eventually that led to the coup, which was only undertaken with the permission of the American ambassador. The events that followed his murder ended up showing how wrong it had been to promote the coup, but the US press never figured out any of that, nor ever printed a word giving his time in office the credit it deserved. One of the first major failures of US media to serve the country, but only the beginning of biased and incompetent media behavior that is with us today. --Del)

Scary if True: In United States v Bond, The Supreme Court Could Be Ruling On The Safety Of All American Rights. By Sam Rolley
Excerpt: On more than one occasion President Barack Obama or a top Administration official has lamented that the Commander in Chief is not a king or a dictator and is, therefore, unable to ram his progressive policies down the greater American public's collective throat as quickly as his liberal supporters would like. And on several occasions, the sole hurdle halting the President in his dash toward liberal utopia-or totalitarian hell, depending on whom you ask - has been a pesky 226-year-old document called the Constitution of the United States of America. But the Obama Justice Department is working to change that. Attorneys at the Justice Department are currently working to advance a Supreme Court argument that the Federal government should be allowed to invoke international treaties as legal basis for policies that government officials are unable to put into place because they conflict with the Nation's Constitution. (Friends, I do not advocate violence. But nor do I advocate obeying a rogue government. If enough of us say no to this tyranny, it will have to look for another home. Start with your neighbors. --Don Hank)

For many, Obama's promise of health care choice does not ring true. By Laura Koran, CNN
Excerpt: But a CNN analysis found that consumer options vary significantly from state to state, and many Americans are discovering that they have very few options. In West Virginia and New Hampshire, for example, residents shopping on the exchanges can only purchase plans from a single company.

Obama: The Myth of the Master Strategist: His poor maneuvering before and after the Obamacare rollout shows that he’s not three moves ahead. By Jonah Goldberg
Excerpt: Often in error but never in doubt, Barack Obama could walk into the Rose Garden and step on a half-dozen rakes like Foghorn Leghorn in an old Looney Tunes cartoon, and the official line would be, “He meant to do that.”

Excerpt: This past month has been among the most dramatic in quite a while in our politics. October 1st was the first day of what turned out to be a 16-day government shutdown, and it was the first day of Obamacare’s launch. The first half of the month was focused on the shutdown, and was something of a nightmare for Republicans. The second half was focused on Obamacare’s woes, and has been something of a nightmare for Democrats. In the process, we have been given an opportunity to learn something important about our political life.

ObamaCare: Illegal Voter Mine for the Democratic Party? By Arnold Ahlert
Excerpt: While many Americans remain focused on the ominous implications of ObamaCare with regard to health insurance or the faulty website, a far more serious issue remains under the radar. On Wednesday, two national election watchdog groups alleged that ObamaCare is really a massive voter registration vehicle masquerading as a healthcare bill. Gregg Phillips, the founder of the election integrity group Voters Trust takes it one step further. “I think [it] is the biggest voter registration fraud scheme in the history of the world,” he told Breitbart News.

And Here Comes the Push for Single Payer

Obamacare marketing push on hold
Excerpt: There’s no point in an ad blitz directing people to sign up on a website that doesn’t work. And while advocacy groups say they had always planned to spend more money on the back end to boost enrollment in lagging states at the end of this year and early next year, they didn’t count on the opening month fizzle.

Trainwreck: Kathleen Sebelius' Top Ten Testimony Fails
If you want to see her horrendous performance in front of Congress dissected, hit this link. Benson does a great job on it. You wonder how she can not want to just resign and go away. Being a total laughingstock across the whole nation in something you will never live down has to be really tough on the ego. But she deserves every bit of it. --Del

Republicans are their own worst enemy on Obamacare. Here’s proof.
Excerpt: The standoff over the budget and debt ceiling that culminated in a government shutdown amounted to a political disaster for Republicans. One of the main reasons why has nothing to do with what happened and everything to do with what didn’t.
A new Kaiser Family Foundation poll released Friday explains it. Forty-four percent of Americans say they paid very close attention to the fight over the short-term budget and the debt limit, while only half as many say the same thing about the glitches that have plagued the rollout of the health-care law’s online exchanges or marketplaces.

Court Strikes Down Obama's Birth Control Mandate Over Religious Freedom Concerns. By Leah Barkoukis
Excerpt: The influential D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday sided with an Ohio business that challenged Obamacare’s birth control mandate. The business owners—two brothers who own and operate Freshway Foods and Freshway Logistics in Sidney, Ohio—argued that providing such coverage would violate their Catholic beliefs. The appeals court panel ruled in their favor (via LifeNews.com:

Early state numbers: People aren't signing up for Obamacare; they're signing up for Medicaid.
Excerpt: Long story short: Where are the enrollments from healthy middle-class people on whom so much depends? "The first month of the new health law’s rollout reveals an unexpected pattern in several states: a crush of people applying for an expansion of Medicaid and a trickle of sign-ups for private insurance. This early imbalance — in some places, nine out of 10 enrollees are in Medicaid — has taken some experts by surprise."

Obamacare victims and Israel. By Caroline Glick
http://townhall.com/columnists/carolineglick/2013/11/01/obamacare-victims-and-israel-n1734514
Excerpt: On the exchanges, individuals earning more than $46,000 or a family of four above $94,000 don’t qualify for subsidies and must buy overpriced insurance. If these middle-class Obamacare losers can be forced into the exchanges, they become financiers of the new pay-as-you go entitlement.” Sure there is an outcry now about Obama’s dishonesty and the way he has used lying to take away from an unwilling public a right it would never have knowingly surrendered, but it is too late.

Hilarious Obamacare Halloween Horror Parody: ‘The Healthcare Mash’

Federal appeals court reinstates most Texas' abortion restrictions
Excerpt: A federal appeals court has reinstated most of Texas' new abortion restrictions. A panel of judges at the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a ruling Thursday evening, three days after District Judge Lee Yeakel said one provision serves no medical purpose.

At hearing on security clearances, senators learn that police records can go unchecked
Excerpt: In 2007, three years after that, Alexis, a defense contractor, was granted a “secret” security clearance. Government officials didn’t even know details of his earlier wrath. It led to his arrest but not a conviction. That level of ignorance left members of a Senate committee dismayed at a federal security-clearance process that does not always check an individual’s police record.

Obama’s advisers considered replacing Biden with Clinton, according to book
Excerpt: President Obama’s political advisers secretly explored the possibility of replacing Vice President Biden on the 2012 ticket with then-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to capitalize on her popularity when Obama’s reelection seemed precarious, according to a new book.

A Psychiatric Trick or Treat: A sad anniversary for mental health. By E. Fuller Torrey
Excerpt: Sadly, JFK’s dream of federalizing public services for mentally ill persons was subverted by the law of unintended consequences. The program has been an unmitigated disaster, both for those who suffer from severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and for the communities in which they live. Untreated mentally ill individuals have usurped hospital emergency rooms, parks, streets, and other public spaces.

Excerpt: As IER pointed out last week, even if wind curbs CO2 emissions, wind installations injure, maim, and kill hundreds of thousands of birds each year in clear violation of federal law. ... Modern wind turbines depend on rare earth minerals mined primarily from China. Unfortunately, given federal regulations in the U.S. that restrict rare earth mineral development and China’s poor record of environmental stewardship, the process of extracting these minerals imposes wretched environmental and public health impacts on local communities. It’s a story Big Wind doesn’t want you to hear.

Good Column: Middle Class Is the New Poor. By Daniel Greenfield
Excerpt: Uncertainty and struggle are what we most often associate with poverty. Not knowing if you can still afford to pay next month’s bills and worrying over how much more you can cut back when you’re already barely getting by. This way of life has become more associated with the middle class than with those at the very bottom.

Retired Marine opens Tampa home to Afghan comrade
Excerpt: Almost exactly five years earlier, Hakimi, working as an interpreter with a team of Marines training Afghan troops, risked his life to save a Marine lieutenant colonel. Ty Edwards, now medically retired and living in Tampa Palms, spent the past four years, during an often painful rehabilitation, fighting State Department bureaucracy to bring Hakimi to the United States.

Interesting: First Crony Michelle Obama's Big Business Bonanza. By Michelle Malkin
Excerpt: While her husband's signature health care law goes up in flames, first lady Michelle Obama is reveling in the success of her East Wing pet project, the "Let's Move" initiative. But ignore the do-gooder dressing. Mrs. Obama doesn't care about your children. What we have here is a textbook case of Washington influence peddling, which the Obamas so vigorously condemned a long time ago and far away.

Goodbye New York, Hello South Carolina: Third Gun Company Leaves Over Cuomo’s SAFE Act. By Leah Barkoukis
Excerpt: When New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the SAFE Act in January—what he referred to as “common sense” gun-control legislation—the law not only turned many law-abiding citizens into criminals, it also drove businesses and jobs out of the state. With a move to South Carolina, American Tactical Imports has become the third firearm company to relocate its operations from New York to more gun-friendly states.

Excerpt: There are very few issues that anger me to the extent that my fingers are frozen to the keyboard and I literally can't write about it. Such was the case over the last few months with the lamestream media peeling the scales from their eyes and finally deciding they were the "fourth estate" again.

Syria becomes largest home to al Qaeda; jihadists find safe haven to plot attacks
Excerpt: Syria has become al Qaeda’s largest safe haven, with more than 10,000 fighters who outnumber the terrorist network’s core organization in Pakistan and its affiliates in North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. (Heck of a job, Barry. ~Bob)

Arrests, Citations Lurk at Union Group Approved by Obama Admin to Promote ObamaCare in Wisconsin

According to the federal Department of Health and Human Services, the organization is working as a certified application counselor, or CAC. Numerous individuals who have been employed by Wisconsin Jobs Now or who work there now have been investigated, arrested or cited by law enforcement agencies for legal violations.

Marine Corps Recruiting Test
I missed two, but would dispute seven. ~Bob

Excerpt: A member Saudi Arabia's board of religious scholars Sheikh Ali al Hemki has criticised the Mars One project which is attempting to organise a commercial mission to the red planet and has drawn expressions of interest from more than 200 thousand people worldwide.

Don’t Worry – The Government Says That The Inflation You See Is Just Your Imagination
Excerpt: If you believe that there is high inflation in the United States, you are just imagining things. That is the message that the U.S. government and the Federal Reserve would have us to believe. You might have noticed that the government announced on Wednesday that the cost of living increase for Social Security beneficiaries will only be 1.5 percent next year. This is one of the smallest cost of living increases that we have ever seen. (A hidden gem in here for those of you who have fallen for the lie that the Fed is a private organization and not part of government:
The Fed has worked for decades to suppress inflation, but economists, including Janet Yellen, President Obama’s nominee to lead the Fed starting next year, have long argued that a little inflation is particularly valuable when the economy is weak. That's right. They are so far removed from government that they are appointed by the Senate and the President of the US:
This is one reason why people are saying that capitalism is no more, having been supplanted by a phenomenon that goes by several names, such as crony capitalism, corporatism, fascism (scary eh?), or here in Latin America, clientelismo or corporativismo. These assorted names refer to something that hasn't the vaguest relationship to genuine competitive capitalism, or what we often call the free market. The closest relic of that bygone system is the handyman who comes to your home, fixes your fridge and gets paid in cash. This guy is a real survivor. The rest are sitting ducks waiting to be picked off by the oligarchs who own the monetary system. Who do I mean by "the rest"? Every man, woman and child living on planet earth, that's who! --Don Hank)

John McCain – We’ll Pass Amnesty after the Primaries
Excerpt: Oh Boy. Everyone’s least favorite RINO is at it again. Making waves and stirring up trouble. I thought that maybe we were finally past all of the Republican civil war ridiculousness, but John McCain can’t leave well enough alone.

From The Goldberg File. By Jonah Goldberg
Mao killed tens of millions of his own people to “prove” that collectivization works and capitalism doesn’t. How’d that work out? Well, today you can buy a great Mao T-shirt at one of Walmart’s many downtown Beijing locations.

Pakistan Taliban Chief Reported Killed in Drone Strike
Excerpt: Associated Press, citing Pakistan intelligence officials, reports a drone strike has killed the leader of the Pakistan Taliban.

The Left Will Get Its Crime-Ridden New York Back. By Daniel Greenfield
Excerpt: Under Giuliani and Bloomberg there was a certain type of leftist who always whining because Times Square had been Disneyfied and the city was too gentrified and not as “wild” as it used to be. The sorts of leftists complaining about it were traditionally veterans of the more dangerous New York. That didn’t mean that they weren’t likely to get their heads based in at 2 AM in the Village, but it meant they had some street cred at least. [I lived in the 'more dangerous' Manhattan between 1970 and 1975 (when it was Murder City USA). I was scared out of my mind quite often. Why did I stay? The buzz. How did I get out? Got on a plane, with no plans, just got out. The whole 30 years I was in Britain, I had dreams about Manhattan and wanted to be there. I was so happy to be in Manhattan in my dreams, I used to levitate in my dreams. As soon as I left Britain and got to LA, I missed London. I still miss London. A lot. Kate.]

Money Flows Back to the Mullahs Thanks to Obama. By Majid Rafizadeh
Excerpt: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s government could not have possibly expected, or wished for, a better American government to work with than the Obama administration. The Iranians could not have imagined that an American administration could so easily buy their argument and image of a “moderate” government, allowing Iranian leaders to pursue their own Islamist and meddling foreign policies.

Mohamed Elibiary Admits America Treats Minorities Better Than Muslim World. By Daniel Greenfield
Excerpt: Muslim Brotherhood activist and Department of Homeland Security advisor Mohamed Elibiary, having finally removed the Muslim Brotherhood’s R4BIA hate symbol from his Twitter profile, when challenged couldn’t name a single Muslim country that treats minorities as well as America does. So instead of naming a Muslim country that treats non-Muslims equally, he named America...

American voters have as much faith in zombies as they do in the federal government. By Nile Gardiner
Excerpt: A staggering 70.9 per cent of US voters now believe the country is heading down the wrong track, according to the latest RealClear Politics average. Many Americans now view the federal government with the same disdain that Brits view the European Commission in Brussels – a distant power that interferes in people’s lives, and suffocates small businesses with ever-growing red tape and regulation. Next year’s mid-term elections, due to be held in November 2014, will be in large part a referendum on the rise of big government in America, including the implementation of Obamacare.

Severe Child Abuse Alleged by Children at Ohio Mosque: For not learning as instructed, children reported being chained to a wall by their wrists and ankles and beaten with a long stick.

Excerpt: Allegations of severe child abuse at an Ohio madrassah (Islamic school) are being investigated by police after a group of Somali children (who attend a public school in the daytime) reported being chained to a wall by their wrists and ankles and beaten with a long stick for not learning their religious texts as instructed.
