found this novel about the Civil War in SE Missouri in a thrift shop. It started
slow, but about half way through I couldn’t put it down. This is a novel of
great depth and insight. It is easy to see why it was a best seller. The characters
hold you long after the novel is finished. The only thing I didn’t like was the
author’s refusal to use quotation marks when someone is speaking. I intend to
give a copy as a Christmas gift. This is a don’t miss.

Great Mischief: A Novel by Alistair MacLeod
The title comes from a derogatory remark by General James Wolff,
who said that using Highland troops was good because if they fell, it was “No
great mischief.” You should read this novel just for MacLeod’s use of language.
The novels follows the fortunes of a family founded by Column MacDonald who
immigrated to Cape Breton from Scotland. It has both joy and sadness. If you
have any affinity for things Scottish, don’t miss this book.
