Book Recommendation

Island: The Complete Stories by Alistair MacLeod

The collection of MacLeod’s short stories is set mainly in the Cape Breton area of Nova Scotia. His writing is so evocative you can’t help feeling these are real people—and real animals. Like his great novel, “No Great Mischief,” it is full of the sadness and joy of living. Often his characters speak in the Gaelic of the Scotland their ancestors came from. (He mostly translates.)  If he wrote copy for cereal boxes, I would read it. I’m giving two copies as Christmas gifts. I regret that he is gone now, so there will be no more of these wonderful stories. Moren Taign, Alistair. I highly recommend this collection.
