Washington

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me
Let's see how that would apply today....
First, they came for the statues of Confederate soldiers that were claimed to be nothing more than racist symbols, and people did not speak out, because we were not the descendants of such soldiers.
Then they came for the portraits of famous Confederate generals, since they were claimed to have fought solely to protect slavery as an institution, and people did not speak out because no one dares be associated with somehow favoring slavery.
Then they came for Founding Fathers like Jefferson, and even historical colleges like Georgetown, because they had slaves, and again, people did not speak out for fear of being called racist.
Now they have come for George Washington, a man of the highest integrity, who risked his life and fortune for six years of war to help found the nation, then turned down the offer of kingship, took on the difficult office of our first President for 8 years, then happily and modestly walked away from power, something so incredibly rare in all of history.  Because he had slaves, fought Indians, and must therefore be seen only as another White racist and oppressor.  Nothing else he did and accomplished means anything.
They'll spend half a million dollars to cover up historical art displaying Washington, so no snowflake will melt right there on the floor at the sight of such perceived horror?  There's nowhere else in the system where that money could be spent to do some real good for people?
If they can trash the memory of Washington, for the sake of those who are so super delicate and can only see all of history through crap-colored glasses, then who among us can feel safe?  No White person, no straight person, no cisgender person, no religious person, for sure.  And in fact, even POC, gays, trans, atheists, and anyone else who dares to say the least word against this tsunami of PC insanity will also be trashed forthwith.  This is how crazy our society has gotten, at least in some parts.
Hundreds of art experts are protesting this, and we can only hope their voices are heard.  What is needed know is a kind of revolt from everyone, including people in the media, Hollywood, in political office, in all kinds of public positions, rejecting very clearly this slide into a voluntary 1984 world where history is erased or rewritten according to ideology.  Heaven help us.
