Sunday's Interesting News

'Tis the season. Around our house, "It's beginning to look a lot like chaos..."

"Physician visit" from a friend and blog reader
Today I saw a well-credentialed physician (in his 40s), a member of a large specialty practice. He acknowledged that he was in the 50% of MDs who wish they had chosen something other than medicine. He said, "I like what I do, if they would just get the government out of health care." He went on to say that "They keep track of what percentage of the prescriptions that I write are done on the computer, which takes twice as long as if I wrote a prescription on paper." He added, "last week, I learned that the reimbursement for one of the procedures that I use is going to be reduced by 37%." Of great concern, he reported, "60% of our middle-class patients no longer have health insurance because they cannot afford the increased costs." By the way, thankfully he had no major negative to convey about my health. --BW

Bill Clinton Blasts Obama Administration During Brazilian Visit
Excerpt: During his visit to Brazil on Monday, former President Bill Clinton told the Brazilian news media that the United States’ need for national security, especially protection from terrorist atacks, does not justify President Barack Obama’s National Security Agency’s program that includes spying on allied countries.

Excerpt: Anyone know who this woman is? Frankly, I don't either….but we shelled out $31,000 dollars so that she could have an official government portrait. You see, every swinging dick and tit that works on Obama's staff is authorized to have a professional portrait done so that it can hang in the halls of Congress and afford taxpayers the thrill of seeing their portrait! Never mind that you wouldn't recognize 99 percent of the folks up on that wall…it's what the government calls a "perk"…a little something above and beyond the $200,000 dollar annual salary. Now, if you're wondering why I even brought this up, in light of the other massive government waste, please follow me for awhile. Yesterday Senator Tom Coburn introduced a bill that would limit the taxpayer payout for official portraits for Czars and bureaucrats to $20,000 dollars a pop. Well, first of all I'm wondering why pay for any of that nonsense? And keep in mind that Coburn has been a cost-cutting hawk ever since he's been in office. Each year he produces a "TOP 100' list of the year's biggest wasteful projects! So why would he sanction even $20,000 dollars each for all those official portraits?

Excerpt: Wrought in financial peril, trustees at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) voted last week to cut 17 academic programs to restrain costs while preserving, at least for now, the school’s athletic programs. The decision will allow UDC to remain a part of the NCAA’s Division II, where its participation costs the school about $4.1 million even though it generates just $1.1 million in revenues, according to the Washington Post. The programs UDC cut range from sociology to economics to physics, majors that have small enrollments at the school of 5,100. The sociology program, according to the Post, has 31 students; the physics major counts just four.

Wichita Muslims worried about "backlash" after airport jihad bomb plot
Excerpt: The mainstream media constantly starts talking about "backlash" against innocent Muslims in the wake of every jihad attack and jihad plot. The Wichita imam insists that he didn't know Loewen; but what is he doing to make sure that others don't get the same view of Islam that Loewen has? After a jihad plot is uncovered, a local imam should be saying that he teaches against the view of jihad that the plotter espoused, redoubling his efforts to root jihad sympathizers out of his community, working with law enforcement, etc. Instead, we only and always get handwringing about "backlash" that never materializes.

Excerpt: On Wednesday, December 11th, the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) held an important and riveting conference on Terrorist, Regime and Western Media. Focusing on “The War of Ideas in the Disinformation Age”, panels mostly discussed media in the Middle East, with emphasis on Al-Jazeera and Al Arabiya. Al Jazeera, founded in 1996, is owned by the Qatar royal family and has recently launched Al Jazeera America (AJAM). Why would Qatar want or need its own channel here in the U.S., in addition to Al Jazeera English, is a question still unanswered by most. FDD President Clifford May, moderating one of the panels, raised the exact same question.

A Government Separated from the People Cannot Stand. By Lawrence Sellin
Excerpt: In his 1952 book The Origins of Totalitarian Democracy, Israeli historian J. L. Talmon described a political system in which lawfully elected representatives rule a nation state whose citizens, although granted the right to vote, have little or no participation in the decision-making process of government. The federal government has become such a system, an entity unto itself operating outside of Constitutional constraints and unaccountable to the American people.

Comment on "Obama the Oblivious" article posted Friday
A friend of mine, normally the most tolerant of women, said to me recently that when she encounters people who, after 5 years of watching promises broken, disasters created, allies alienated, enemies catered to, flat out lies being documented (then denied, finally admitted with excuses), and overall incompetence that is truly monumental, still maintain faith in Mr. Obama as a light unto the world and savior of the nation, she has no choice any longer but to very seriously question their basic intelligence. I have to admit, it does begin to make you wonder about their ability to observe and understand what goes on in front of their eyes. The actual answer is not about intelligence, it's about an emotional bias that is so strong that it basically blocks out the rational thought process, it's hanging onto a fantasy that you love so deeply that you cannot face giving it up, no matter what. I don't think it's being to unkind to classify it as a form of mental defect. And, speaking of mental defect, Obama learns nothing from any of what has happened right on his watch. He continues to live in the world that is super comfortable for him, where his speaking ability and charm can fix anything, and he will never suffer any downside from whatever he or his friends have done. And so far, he hasn't. But we have. --Del

Arapahoe High School shooter Karl Halverson Pierson – leftist strongly for gun control
Excerpt: Karl Halverson Pierson was a far left progressive who mocked Republicans on his Facebook page and was against gun rights for legal owners. Arapahoe High gunman held strong political beliefs, classmates said. By Zahira Torres and Yesenia Robles
Excerpt: In one Facebook post, Pierson attacks the philosophies of economist Adam Smith, who through his invisible-hand theory pushed the notion that the free market was self-regulating. In another post, he describes himself as "Keynesian." ... Pierson also appears to mock Republicans on another Facebook post, writing "you republicans are so cute" and posting an image that reads: "The Republican Party: Health Care: Let 'em Die, Climate Change: Let 'em Die, Gun Violence: Let 'em Die, Women's Rights: Let 'em Die, More War: Let 'em Die. Is this really the side you want to be on?"

Excerpt: Thomas Conrad, who had an economics class with the gunman, described him as a very opinionated Socialist.

Denver Post Stealth Edits Out ‘Socialist’ from Profile of Arapahoe School Shooter. By Noah Rothman
Excerpt: In a profile on the shooter in the Denver Post which focused on his “strong political beliefs,” several of Pierson’s classmates offered their impressions of the shooter. One of the shooter’s classmates described him as a “very opinionated socialist.” Shortly after that post was published, however, that description was edited out. The current copy simply describes him as “very opinionated.”

Includes my 1998 column predicting 9/11. ~Bob)

Excerpt: California has surged ahead in implementing the federal health-care law, but it is lagging in one way that could have major implications for the program’s success: Latinos appear to make up only a small fraction of those who have signed up. (Why would illegals sign up when they can just go to the emergency room to get free care? ~Bob)

The attack has raised questions as to whether it was one of the so-called knockout incidents in which the assailants attempt to fell a victim with an unexpected blow, often delivered from behind.

Excerpt: A couple of decades ago we were complaining that Christmas had become too commercial. We lamented the stores breaking out Christmas decorations before we finished with Thanksgiving. Then we began seeing Christmas promotions before the kiddies had even finished "trick or treating" 'Little did we know, those early Christmas promotions can now be deemed "the good ole days". The exploitation of Christmas has now reached all new highs. (Flimflam men say you can't cheat an honest man. Likewise, the only reason merchants exploit Christmas is that people reward them with money for doing so. ~Bob)

They're acting as if Sharia were already the law of the land in Britain. Note also the threat toward the end of the letter: "DO NOT IGNORE THIS LETTER."

Obamacare Should Remind Us We Are Not 'Subjects,' We Are People
Excerpt: The unveiling of the dictatorial debacle that is Obamacare absolutely flabbergasts me. It is stunning on so many levels, but the most shocking aspect of it for me is watching millions of free Americans stand idly by while this man, his minions in Congress and his cheerleaders in the press systematically dismantle our Constitution, steal our money, and crush our freedoms.

SOOPERMEXICAN: My Response To Liberal Accusations That I Am Not Mexican
Excerpt: As a Hispanic conservative, I often marvel at the bilious vitriol that the left reserves for those who would dare threaten one of their most dearly held religious dogmas: minorities are exclusive property of the Democratic party. Any who might transgress against this holy writ shall be excoriated and attacked. Verily, verily, I say unto thee.

Will Barack and Michelle Obama light a candle for these victims too? Soopermexican.com
UPDATE: Apparently there was a moment of silence for the Newtown victims at the White House as well. If there was just one minute of silence for every abortion victim per year, Obama would be silent all day, for more than two years. I’ll leave it to you to do the math.

Fighting the long defeat, hope without guarantees and a Judge standing outside of time.
Excerpt: It has been said that J. R. R. Tolkien did not create Middle-earth but discovered it. Certainly for those of us to whom Tolkien has extended an invitation, who have feasted in the Shire and climbed the Misty Mountains and slept under the golden leaves of Lothlorien, our memories have the echo of truth.
