No Republicans Need Apply

No Republicans Need Apply. By Kevin D. Williamson
Excerpt: From the New York Times we learn of the emergence of the “no-Trump clause” in housing ads in our liberal (which is to say, illiberal) metropolitan areas. The idea is nothing new — I saw similar “No Republicans Need Apply” ads years ago when looking for apartments in Washington and New York — but the intensity seems to have been turned up a measure or two: In 2017, the hysteria knob goes up to eleven. Katie Rogers of the Times offers an amusingly deadpan report: In one recent ad, a couple in the area who identified themselves as “open-minded” and liberal advertised a $500 room in their home: “If you’re racist, sexist, homophobic or a Trump supporter please don’t respond. We won’t get along.” That’s a funny kind of open-mindedness — it is in fact literal prejudice. It is also illiterate: Whatever Donald Trump’s defects, to associate him with homophobia is a stretch to the point of dishonesty, inasmuch as Trump in 2017 is well to the liberal side of Barack Obama in 2008 on gay marriage.

Tax Imports?

Some economists seem to suggest otherwise, but a tax on US imports would not represent “free money.”
Excerpt: House Republicans envision changing the corporate income tax to (1) provide for the immediate deduction of business outlays, and (2) “border adjust” the calculation, i.e., exempt export sales and disallow a deduction for (effectively tax) imports. They salivate at the prospect that this arrangement would generate a net increase in revenue for the US Treasury of some $1 trillion over the next 10 years, which could then be used to “pay for” a big cut in the corporate tax rate. But wait, wouldn’t the result of taxing imports be to push up consumer prices for Americans who buy vast quantities of imported goods at Walmart, Amazon, etc.? Such a result wouldn’t seem politically astute as consumers vote. It would also be out of synch with the goal of keeping the tax system economically neutral versus favoring certain types of transactions over others. Proponents of the border adjustment concept have come up with a clever argument, which is that the apparent subsidy for exports and penalty for imports would be offset by strengthening of the US dollar. The net result, supposedly, would be to leave all concerned in the same position except for the US Treasury - which would be a big winner. Count us as skeptical about this comforting conclusion, and it turns out that we have a good deal of company including Senator David Perdue, Veronique de Rugy, and Steve Forbes. The Trump administration is working on its own tax plan, which will be announced within a matter of weeks and according to the president will be “phenomenal.” Let’s hope this plan won’t include border adjustment, but the only clue for now is that he earlier referred to this feature as “too complicated."

Better URL: Why Trump won

Good column, why I think Trump won: I am a deplorable, and I'm happy I voted for Trump. Jeff Best
Excerpt: But all that doesn't matter. My grandchildren should make these choices themselves, not the current collection of Washington and state government politicos who use my taxes to make empty speeches and buy votes in the next election. Balance the budgets and pay off state and federal debt first. And then we can have all the empty values-centered debates about which cause du jour we want to throw money at. It seems that the outcome of the last election is understood only by people like me. Frankly, I don't like Donald Trump either. He is arrogant, careless with what he says, overly competitive and insensitive. I voted for Trump because he was the alternative to letting a collection of free spenders, organizers, race-baiters, intellectuals, tree huggers and professional value arbitrators continue to spend our grandchildren's money. This country and this generation of voters must pay our bills and not sit around having dorm-room debates on philosophy and injustice. I voted for Trump because we can't afford another president we simply like; we need one now who does something.

Leftist Fight Club

'Leftist Fight Club' trains UCF students to fight Republicans
Excerpt: The University of Central Florida “Knights for Socialism” held a training event Sunday intended to teach left-wing students how to “BASH THE FASH” in a “Leftist Fight Club,” but Republicans were not invited, according to a report by Campus Reform. The group called the event, “Leftist Fight Club: The Rumbles at Lake Claire,” and hired a local amateur boxer to lead the workshop. The group claims the workshop was primarily a self-defense course — targeted mainly toward women — to teach basic hand-to-hand combat techniques. According to the group’s website, the course was designed to help socialist students protect themselves from potential hate crimes performed by those sympathetic to “[President] Donald Trump and other Alt-Right Neo-Nazis,” the site said.

Must Watch

The TV show "60 Minutes" went to Sweden to film a report on how the comparatively huge influx of refugees has worked out there.  They were trying to do their reasonably objective coverage, talking to Swedes and refugees about things.  But to their surprise and shock, they came under physical attack very quickly in two different places, just for being there and looking like they look.  It turned out to be a somewhat more telling story about how things don't work out when some people cannot or will not assimilate and decide to create enclaves of their own kind of society.  Where "others" are not tolerated at all.  This is when you immigrants are more like invaders from another culture than people ready and willing to adapt to a new home.  It's not a long video, worth the time to watch it. --Del

Ever looked up the education credentials of Hollywood and New York soothsayers?

Most of them rely on knowledge clouds drifting across the Pacific, perhaps from an Asian mystic who wears lots of colorful beads.

The mystic has brought them deep understanding of economics, governance, military affairs and especially science. It inspires bold words on most topics.

LEONARDO DeCAPRIO's self-declared climate expertise enables him to speak on the world's environmental issues with a high-school education. He never took a college biology, chemistry, physics or climatology course, yet he knows more than most scientists. He proved that by addressing climate change before a full gathering of the UN.

SEAN PENN's quick takes on everything put him at the lofty level of an Einstein. He visited Iraq once and became an expert on that country. The same for Iran. He also became buddies with the brutal Venezuelan communist Hugo Chavez and consistently lauded that murderous thug. Now that Chavez is gone and Venezuelans are raiding dumpsters for food scraps, Penn is having a rare silent moment. Penn deserves some credit for becoming a world-affairs genius based on two years of auto mechanics classes at Santa Monica College.

KATY PERRY's passion about politics and economics freed her to quit high school at 15 without compromising her expert status. Asked the square root of 64, the name given the Constitution's first 10 amendments and to explain PE ratio, her answer might be, "Republicans are for the rich." She recently demonstrated wizardry by making an anti-Trump video. It suggested the new president would commit acts similar to forced World War II lockups of loyal Japanese-Americans. Perry probably did not know the internment plan was developed and executed by DEMOCRAT President Roosevelt.

ROBERT DeNIRO must also be a quick learner. He acquired amazing scientific knowledge before dropping out of high school. He knows so much about geology that he joined Artists Against Fracking. (All the producing wells in his native Manhattan must have provided first-hand experience.) He's also an expert on pediatric medicine, enabling him to speak often against vaccinating infants and children.

HARRY BELAFONTE is another multiple-subject whiz who needed little formal education. Some people might think this talented singer might limit his words to songs since his IQ is so low. Don't worry. Despite advancing age, he remains expert on most things. When black people of greater intelligence (that's most black people) say something moderate or conservative, he hurls the N word at them. Decades ago, he loudly denounced Reagan's elimination of CETA, the Comprehensive Employment Training Act. It was one of the most wasteful federal programs ever -- many vanished dollars, few jobs. Belafonte tore into Reagan during an interview Finally, the interviewer asked Belafonte what CETA stood for. Belafonte had no clue. He knew almost nothing about the act.

ROSIE O'DONNELL was my personal favorite long before her hateful remark that Trump's 10-year-old son looked autistic. Her coarse philosophy must be that if you say something loudly, it need not be correct. Her bombast probably created lots of turmoil with both the women she "married." She also must have skipped chemistry during her high-school education. Otherwise, she would have not have offered "proof" that 9/11 was an inside job. She often bellowed that planes could not have brought down the Twin Towers because "steel doesn't burn." This constant jackass must not know that high temperatures DO reduce steel's strength.

AL SHARPTON would be America's greatest at-large criminal, if not for Hillary's tens of millions swapped for influence and favors. Sharpton owes nearly $5 million in delinquent taxes to IRS and New York state. Makes you wonder why NBC/MSNBC would ever hire him. Sharpton accumulated vast theological knowledge by age 9, when he was "ordained" as a preacher. He didn't need more than a high-school education to keep marching forward. His most successful high school class must have been Shystehood. Despite one scandal after another, his 2004 run for president stands out. The Federal Election Commission forced him to return $100,000 in taxpayer money provided by FEC. One of many abuses was his $145,146 charge for "Campaign letter preparation -- Kinko's." Later, FEC fined Sharpton $285,000.

JULIA ROBERTS proves that physical beauty does not ensure a beautiful brain. She had a fling at Georgia State University before pursuing acting lessons and joining a modeling group. Her acting and modeling skills guided her to such thoughtful observations as "Republican" comes between "reptile" and "repugnant" in the dictionary. Impressed?

BROOKE SHIELDS, an Obama supporter, verifies the Roberts theory -- that physical beauty does not guarantee a beautiful brain. During her days as a boisterous animal-rights supporter, Shields had a mink coat custom-made.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN could have been No. 1 on this list. He squabbled with nuns when in Catholic school. Transferring to a public school, he thought so little of the education experience that he skipped graduation. Had he gone to college, he might have majored in Hate 101. That's what we hear when he's not singing. He claims Trump is a "moron" who advocates "white nationalism." Springsteen demonstrates the analytical skills' void of most show-biz folk when he laments America's industrialization decline. Somebody please whisper to Springsteen that his party's business-crunching regulations and world-leading corporate tax rate compels U.S. manufacturers to go elsewhere.

Finally, two others are outside the entertainment world, disqualifying them from winning an Oscar, Emmy or Grammy. Politicians Nancy Pelosi and Maxine Waters do compete for the Rock Head of the Year trophy each time they speak. Pelosi frequently wins with comments like needing to pass a bill "so we can find out what's in it." Waters has already locked up the 2017 trophy for suggesting a Trump impeachment over his campaign antics. Listen closely, Maxine. Presidents can be impeached only for what they do in office.

the Secret of Happiness

The Secret of Happiness
People search for happiness all their lives, and many never find it. And right here, in this little book, I’m going to tell you the secret of happiness.
Stop looking for it. Really, it’s that easy. And that hard.
People who chase after happiness almost never find it. Usually they do so by becoming self-centered and self-indulgent. Such people are never happy. They think they will find happiness by being rich, often working themselves almost to death chasing money. Or worse, becoming dishonest people and stealing or cheating others out of what they have earned. But they are not happy. I’ve never met a happy thief.
They think they can be happy by feeling good, and they drink too much, or abuse drugs, or smoke, or indulge in promiscuous sex. When it doesn’t work, they do it more. And these things make their lives very unhappy.
They try to party and do things that are fun all the time, and soon find that the “fun” isn’t fun anymore. It leaves them feeling empty.
So how come all these people chase happiness and never find it?
Because they don’t know the secret.
Happiness can’t be found. It can only come to you when you are doing other things that are important, and not worrying about finding happiness.
The secret of happiness is to care about something more important than yourself. Unfortunately, you can tell people that, but they don’t believe it. Self-centered people try it, but soon go back to thinking they are the center of the universe, that only their wants, desires and needs matter, and they can step on anyone to get them. They go back to their parties or their drugs or their sex or their booze. And thus to being unhappy, which they blame on other people.
It doesn’t matter what you care about, that is bigger than you, only that it is worth caring passionately about. Caring about being the prettiest girl in school, or having the cutest boyfriend, or eating the most hotdogs in a contest doesn’t count.
Caring passionately about important things more than yourself doesn’t mean you never have fun. Before I met your Grandma, I had more than a few girlfriends, and we had a lot of fun. Grandma and I have a good time almost all the time. I’ve enjoyed parties and dancing and poetry and travel and hiking and reading. I like Scotch and, yes, sometimes I’ve drunk too much—so the next day I wasn’t happy at all! All of these qualify as “fun,” and we all need a balance of fun in our lives. But they aren’t the kind of things you can care about that will make you happy.
Here are some of the important things I’ve cared about more than myself. I’ve cared a lot about my country, and still do, working all I can to protect her and to make her better, so kids like you will have the life of freedom and opportunity in the future that America gave to me. I’ve cared about the US Marine Corps every day since I joined in August of 1964. Of course, serving in the Marines is one way I tried to help protect my country. You know I volunteered to serve in Vietnam, a war (and was lucky enough to have an easy time of it compared to most Marines). I remember being miserable sometimes in the heat or rain or even cold. I remember being bored sometimes. I remember being scared a few times. But I don’t remember being unhappy, because I was serving something larger and more important than myself.
I’ve been lucky enough to have jobs, first as a state senator and later as an association executive, where the work I did made a difference in people’s lives. So I cared about my jobs, and happiness came to me.
I’ve cared about my family, about my parents and brothers and other relatives. Since I married your Grandma in 1992, I’ve cared about her more than anything but my country. That is, until Britnye Ruby Vela was born in 2000, and I started caring about you as much as Grandma. Every day, I ask God to protect Grandma and to protect you—and to do whatever he thinks best with me.
Caring passionately about these things more than I have cared about myself have made me a very happy person, though I didn’t set out to chase happiness.
Sure, I have bad days when bad things make me unhappy. The car breaks down. Or some lowlife steals from me. Someone does something mean to me at work. But because I have these basic building blocks of happiness in my life—things I care about—I get over being angry or unhappy pretty fast.
There are lots of other things you could care about that would make you just as happy. Working as a volunteer in an organization, or having a job where you help people. Getting involved in your church or other place of worship. Taking care of stray or abused dogs and cats. Getting food for the hungry. It’s a long list.
The trick is to have something, or even better several things, you are involved in that are important and that you care about more than yourself.
As I write this, you are eleven-years-old. But Grandma and I have noticed that you tend to be “other-centered,” that is, you care a lot about other people, not just yourself. That’s a good sign, because you can often spot the self-centered kid by that age. If you turn out that way, you will be happy. People who care about things, like money, are usually unhappy. People who care about other people are usually happy. People who are kind and generous are usually happy. People who are selfish and mean are usually unhappy.
If you don’t care about hurting your family and the people who love you by doing drugs or stealing or other self-destructive behaviors, you will make yourself and those who love you very unhappy.
You get to choose. Now that you know the secret, choose wisely.

Terorists

Exclusive: US May Have Let 'Dozens' of Terrorists Into Country As Refugees
Another "you can't make this stuff up". People who were active Al Queda fighters in Iraq, who had killed American soldiers and were proud of it, somehow get accepted as refugees here, move into Kentucky, go onto public assistance, and conspire to send weapons back to Al Queda in Iraq, and also want to assassinate a US Army officer here whom they knew in Iraq. And we're supposed to trust how well the system can check out tens of thousands of refugees? Call me the hardass guy, but even if you say that barring 10,000 refugees means unfair treatment of 9,990 of them because of the 10 bad guys in there, sorry, the safety of our people comes first. Billions for refugee camps over there is fine, spend my tax money to help the people that way. --Del

Judges

The Ninth Circuit: Dangerously Out of Order: Black-robed politicians on the Left Coast handcuff Trump, keeping the borders wide open for terrorists.
First off, the Taft-Hartley Act of 1952 gives the President total authority to ban whomever he wants on whatever grounds. The last time it was used it was Jimmy Carter, against Iranians. Secondly, national security is the responsibility of the Executive Branch, totally, and there is no basis whatsoever for the Judicial Branch to to make any rulings about it. These three judges are off on a political "social justice" mission, which is utterly outside of their power or purview. Had any court made some kind of similar decision to twart Obama from doing something, the media and law school professors would have gone beyond ballistic, but it's OK now, see, because it's Trump and we don't like him or his ideas. Whether anyone likes how he uses his powers, as long as they are legal, constitutional, he gets to do them, the same as Obama did. Revolt against the President because you don't like him is what they do in 3rd world countries, not here. They have no idea how dangerous this kind of thing is to the future of the Republic. --Del
