Excerpt: In 1996, Alan Sokal, a New York University physicist and self-described “academic leftist,” composed an essay that was a word salad of solemn academic jargon. He said he strove to be “especially egregious,” by maundering on about “the dialectical emphases” of “catastrophe theory” becoming a “concrete tool of progressive political praxis.” His essay’s gaudy title was: “Transgressing the Boundaries: Toward a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity.” He sent it to the left-leaning “cultural studies” journal Social Text, which swooned, perhaps in part because Sokal larded his nonsense with political tropes that are catnip to lettered leftists — “emancipatory mathematics,” “demystify and democratize the production of scientific knowledge,” “the crisis of late-capitalist production relations.” Soon after Social Text published his faux scholarship, Sokal revealed in another journal, Lingua Franca, that it was a parody. This would have been obvious to anyone whose intelligence had not been anesthetized by the patois of “deconstructionist” and “poststructuralist” professors.

As Rommel said, no battle plan survives first contact with the enemy. If the other guy is smart, innovative, and really applies a lot of resources, there's always the real possiblity that he'll come up with something that negates the parts of your defense or offense that you were relying on with great confidence. It's certainly happened more than a few times in warfare. My first worry is some kind of focused EMP that blows all the systems in the ships and aircraft and leaves them helpless, while the other guys have somehow shielded or inactivated their systems so they keep functionality. If one side has electronics and the other side doesn't, it's pretty much over right then. A serious swarm of supersonic antiship missiles might be too many for any defensive system to neutralize, and so on. We can only hope there are smart people thinking about this and working on answers. --Del

Nice try at cutting back on the rights of others to free speech but it was all crap and could not be supported, and the judge figured it out. I guess they were counting on some form of PC bias to get them a favorable judgment even when there was no case, just because it was a Muslim kid, but it didn't work. Now maybe the family can just slide into obscurity. And remember, they had moved to an Arab country where he'd get a free education but finally decided to move back to the USA. Disturbing Lessons From the Chicago Beating
Everything Prager says here is valid. Reverse the races of the perpetrators and the victim and the storm would have broken like Hurricane Katrina, the riots would have gone on in many places for several nights. And it was covered in such sparse and PC ways that for a while you would have little chance of understanding what really happened. Only after the tumult finally broke, and that only because for heaven's sake IT WAS ON FACEBOOK, and anyone could see and hear what the monsters said and did, were the Chicago police essentially forced to classify it as a hate crime. But not one about race, oh no, it was about a disabled person. All that background screaming about Trump and White people..... never mind, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, right? This is how crazy things have gotten. A few years ago some professor actually proclaimed that only White people could be racists. A statement which in itself is inherently racist, and monumentally stupid. Yet apparently now somehow accepted by a lot of people. If you want to ensure racial tensions only climb, never decline, this is the way to make that happen. Ignorance, stupidity, and a capacity for evil are part of the human condition, and have no relationship to the skin one is wearing. A truth that everyone needs to understand and accept. To believe otherwise is to keep building the barriers that keep people penned in by fear, mistrust, and hate. --Del

This excellent book was given to me by my friend Dwight, a
retired Army LtCol and the most knowledgeable person on military history I
know. I have read a lot of histories by the late Sir John Keegan, but had
missed this one. It covers the Normandy
invasion in more detail than I had previously seen, including the events that
led up to it and the inter-allied conflicts and many aspects that are glossed
over in other accounts. Highly readable, well-researched and a must for history
buffs..

It's a blustery, icy night here. (The wind ripped out one of the grommets on my USMC flag. Which I will replace. When the weather permits. So I made a huge pot of chili. Pretty good, though needs salt due to my low salt diet. ~Bob
Bob Hall's Microwave Chili
3 lbs ground turkey
5 cans chili beans salt free
2 cans black beans salt free
1 can chopped tomatoes salt free
1 package fresh, chopped mushrooms (or large can, drained & rinsed)
1 package frozen season veg. (peppers & onions)
or 1.5 cups frozen/fresh chopped peppers & onions
1 Tablespoon chili powder
1 Tablespoon coriander
1 Teaspoon black pepper (optional)
1 Tablespoon crushed garlic or 1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
2 Tablespoons BBQ sauce
2 Tablespoons Orrington Farms beef stock low salt
Cook meat in skillet or microwave until cooked. Drain & break up in wee bits. Add everything else. Mix. Cook on 70% power for 60 minutes. May be served with elbow noodles or rice.

Republican leaders hoped he would come to the rescue of the former governor, Guy Hunt, who was removed from office after a 1993 ethics conviction. A country that represses all voices of opposition; that uses strongarm tactics against any political dissent. A country that offers little to no freedom of religion. A country that spies on us and regularly opposes us at the United Nations. A country that has its eyes on its neighbors for expansion. A country that supplies weapons to enemies of Israel and enemies of our allies. A country that has a stated goal increasing its nuclear capabilities. A country ruled unapologetically by a demagogue whose word is law. A country that censors the press and filters its Internet to crack down on liberty. In case you haven’t figured it out by now, President Obama was talking about Iran. And President-elect Trump was talking about Russia. Russia and Iran are business partners. Now tell me, what difference is there between Trump’s Russia doctrine and Obama’s Iran doctrine? Only the players are different.

Mexico has 10 trade deals with 45 countries including the European Union and Brazil, which make up half of the global car market. The U.S. has 14 agreements with a mere 20 countries. Nearly 15% of the cars produced in Mexico are destined for Europe and Latin America, where they often face lower tariffs than do cars exported from the U.S. Lower tariffs on exports exceed labor savings on Mexican-made cars by four times. Yet even with all of these cost advantages, only 18% of U.S. auto makers’ North American vehicle production is in Mexico. U.S. companies continue to make most of their higher-margin trucks and SUVs in the U.S. as labor is a smaller share of the gross margins and production costs for large vehicles. Manufacturing heavier vehicles near their main market also cuts transportation costs.

there were just 41 Republicans in the Senate. The number of Democrats steadily
increased as Roland Burris joined on January 15, Arlen Specter switched to
the Democratic party at the end of April, and Al Franken’s election wasn’t
settled until the end of June. Hillary Clinton was confirmed as Secretary of
State, 94 votes in favor, 2 opposed. Eric Holder was confirmed as Attorney General,
75 votes in favor, 21 opposed. Kathleen Sebelius was confirmed as Health and
Human Services Secretary, 65 votes to 31 opposed. Tim Geithner, who ran into
some trouble over unpaid taxes, was confirmed, 60 votes in favor, 34 opposed. Looking
back, Republicans concentrated their objections to just a few of Obama’s
selections. The Senate confirmed seven Obama nominees the day he was
inaugurated, another five within his first week in office, and 13 were
confirmed via voice vote without any recorded opposition. Senate Democrats plan
a very different approach: Democratic senators plan to
aggressively target eight of Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees in the coming
weeks and are pushing to stretch their confirmation votes into March — an
unprecedented break with Senate tradition.

Cherry Pecan Cake
I found no-sugar-added cherry pie filling at Walmart, so had to try a cake. Took forever to get done, but pretty good. ~Bob
Cherry Pecan Cake - Low Sugar
Ingredients
1 cop eggbeaters or 4 eggs
1 cup vegetable oil
2/3 cup skip/1% milk
2.5 cups Splenda
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 20 oz can of no-sugar-added cherry pie filling
3.5 cups flour]
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup chopped pecans
Directions
Preheat over to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x4 loaf pan.
In a large bowl, mix eggbeaters, oil, milk, vanilla and Splenda until smooth. Stir in the cherry pie filling.
In a separate bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, baking powder and nuts.
Slowly stir into the cherry mixture until well blended.
Pour in pan. Bake for 70-80 minutes until golden and a knife comes out clean.
Allow to cool ten minutes before serving.

Federal prosecutors file charges against Santiago, he could face the death penalty

While in Iraq, Santiago cleared roads of improvised explosive devices and at least two members of his company were killed, spokesman Lt. Col. Candis Olmstead told The New York Times. He was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation. Since returning from Iraq, Santiago served in the Army Reserves and the Alaska National Guard in Anchorage, Olmstead told the AP. He was serving as a combat engineer in the Guard before his discharge for "unsatisfactory performance," said Lt. Col. Candis Olmstead, a spokeswoman. His military rank upon discharge was E3, private 1st class, and he worked one weekend a month with an additional 15 days of training yearly, Olmstead said. She would not elaborate on his discharge, but the Pentagon said he went AWOL several times and was demoted and discharged.
