Random Thoughts for July 2023

Random Thoughts for July 2023

Robert A. Hall

Feel free to post or forward.

Health: Everything stable. Six-month review 7/6. Back aches a lot, so bought posture and back braces. Too early to tell, but I think they will help.

Blogspot stopped publishing my “Random Thoughts” because, after 10 years, it violated their “community standards.” Also, they wouldn’t publish a list of my books. Both denials came back instantly. Must have key words in its algorithm. Several news stories have been unpublished for the same reason.

Update: They stopped unpublishing my posts for violations of “Community Standards.” I don’t know why. Been trying to understand WordPress, but despite buying a book, I’m making small progress. We shall see. If I go to a new blog, I will keep you posted. Meanwhile the current one www.tartanmatrine.blogspot.com is working.

I will be shopping less on Amazon. I bought an item that didn’t work as advertised. Then I discovered it had to be returned through Whole Foods, about an hour’s drive with traffic to the other side of Madison. I went through hell getting a UPS label. I won’t buy anything that might have to be returned.

Our PayPal account was hacked. There were several charges on my credit card for orders from PayPal to Walmart. I called both and think I got through voicemail hell. Also told my credit card company the charges were bogus. The cancelled my card; sending me knew ones. Walmart informed me my items were shipped to Owasso, OK and Hildalgo, TX. I wrote the police department in both towns. The Owasso PD informed me the address was outside town, and the Kenneth that two items were shipped to had died last year. The Owasso PD has been great at follow up. He said scammers often ship to empty houses to make collection easier. I could file a complaint with the Sheriff but would have to file an identity theft charge here to get them to take action. Nothing from Hidalgo, TX. Sigh.

I asked a cute girl, not yet nine, in one of my Chess Summer Camps, what she wanted to be when she grew up. She said, “A chess teacher like you.” It was a lovely compliment, but I told her she should find something to make more money and do chess on the side.

What makes companies think that their customers want the woke agenda shoved down their throats?

Tee shirt: “You know that little thing inside your head that tells you when you shouldn’t say something? Yea, I don’t have one of those.”

“You will be amazed at how many big U.S. and multinational corporations who are enthusiastically celebrating “Pride Month” have significant operations in countries that criminalize homosexuality. It’s not just China and Saudi Arabia, and it’s not just manufacturing in countries such as Pakistan or Indonesia. No, you’re going to be flabbergasted by which particularly controversial company at this moment has operations running in . . . Uganda, which just enacted what are probably the most anti-gay criminal laws on the planet. Corporate America gets to market to LGBT consumers stateside, and then turn around and make a bundle in some of the most anti-gay countries in the world, and apparently everyone is just fine with this systemic hypocrisy.” ~ Jim Geraghty

Tee shirt suggestion: Straight, White, Christian, Male. My life matters as much as yours.

Friday Fish fry is an institution in the Midwest. Saw this tee shirt on a waitress: Thank Cod it’s Fryday.

Is charisma more important than ability? We know race is.

"Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclination, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence." ~ John Adams (1770)

Tee shirt: “Every time I think things can’t get worse, there’s an election.”

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse.” ~ John Stuart Mill

During discussion the other night one of the women, clearly a person of color, asked for the definition of white culture. So, I started thinking…what are those things that apparently the woke reject as racist or demonstrations of whiteness? Here’s my list: Getting the right answer, exemplified by math being labeled as racist. Being polite, such as holding doors open, and saying please and thank you. Being prompt or on time. Using a trash can. Valuing education. Valuing the nuclear family. I believe the woman who asked the question noted the white value of materialism, yet she ignored the rampant looting of stores.” ~ GS

“Only in Washington-speak is keeping spending the same considered a cut.” ~ National Review.

"The foundation of national morality must be laid in private families." ~ John Adams (1778

I had to get on the Internet through my laptop. The log-in wasn’t cooperating. I had to call tech support at TP-Link. The guy there was very patient working through my problems to get me on-line. Five stars.

I hate voice mail. Companies drone on while you just want a person.

Like anger, ideology is a bad master.

The FBI is now Biden’s Staatspolizi.

Son: Dad, I know about Silly putty. But is there Serious Putty?

Dad: Son, let me tell you about C4. From the Net.

At Costco I saw both peanut Butter Whiskey and Cookie Dough Whiskey. I assume they had a really bad batch of bad whiskey and had to put that stuff in it to make it sell.

With some people you think they threw out the baby and kept the placenta.

I’m surprised the media didn’t blame the titanic sightseeing sub implosion on Trump.

“In those wretched Countries where a Man cannot call his Tongue his own, he can scarce call any Thing else his own.” ~ Ben Franklin

I must have missed all the stories about women who transitioned to male fighting to use the men’s restroom.

Earlier generations of Americans would be appalled at the bureaucratic regulations that govern our lives.
