Healthy SOS for old vets

Healthy SOS for old vets—Bob Hall’s version

1 pound ground turkey
4 tablespoons light butter
1 cup freshly cut chopped onion
1 small can mushroom pieces, drained & rinsed, or 1 cup fresh mushrooms.
            (Be sure to rinse canned mushrooms as they have a lot of salt.)
6-8 tablespoons flour
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon Italian Seasoning
1 teaspoon sage
1 teaspoon paprika
1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
2 cups skim or 1% milk

Salt and pepper to taste

Whole grain toast

All ingredients and proportions subject to revision by the commander on the spot.


Brown meat, add butter and stir. Add onions (and fresh mushrooms) and cook until they are translucent. Add canned mushrooms if you don't use fresh, garlic, sage, paprika, Italian seasoning and Worcestershire Sauce. Mix thoroughly. put cold milk in a larger, microwave bowl. Add flour and stir in cold milk until dissolved and smooth. Add meat mixture and microwave on high, stirring every two minutes until it thickens. Add salt and pepper to individual servings. Serve on a shingle (whole grain toast).
