Political Digest June 10, 2010

I post articles because I think they are of interest. Doing so doesn’t mean that I necessarily agree with every—or any—opinion in the posted article. It also doesn’t mean that I don’t agree with them. I have to say all this to give some of my critics the benefit of the doubt, assuming they are thick, rather than deliberately taking things the wrong way.

Fun read: Nancy Pelosi, the liberal House speaker, is heckled by liberals
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/08/AR2010060804327.html?wpisrc=nl_pmheadline
The never-ending appetite of the left for more—more spending, more taxes, more government, more entitlements more blame for America. Excerpt: The celebrated San Francisco liberal took the stage to greet what should have been a friendly audience: the annual gathering of progressive activists organized by the Campaign for America's Future. Instead, Pelosi was eaten by her own. Just three minutes into her speech -- right after she gave the triumphant news that "Change is here!" -- two men stood up and spread out a large pink banner in front of the podium demanding "Stop Funding Israel Terror." At that moment, a wheelchair-bound woman named Carrie James began to scream from her table about 30 feet away: "I am not going to a nursing home!" At that cue, about 15 people in the crowd -- who, like James, wore orange T-shirts demanding "Community Choice Act Now" -- unfurled bedsheet banners and struck up a chant: "Our homes, not nursing homes!" Bodyguards rushed forward and formed a six-person ring around Pelosi and the lectern. Leaders of the conference tried to take the speaker backstage until the disturbance could be quelled, but she brushed them off: "I'm not leaving. I'm not leaving," she said. "You have made your point. I'm going to give my speech over your voices." And she did, for an excruciating half-hour. The hecklers screamed themselves hoarse, dominating Pelosi's speech through her concluding lines: "I want to say thank you to Campaign for America's Future for your relentlessness, for your dissatisfaction, for your impatience. That's what I see every day in my district." Political movements tend to unravel gradually, but on Tuesday this one seemed to be imploding in real time. As the "tea party" right has gained strength, Obama's hope-and-change left has faded. The frustration has crystallized at the gathering this week of demoralized activists.

Super Duper Tuesday: The Winners and Losers
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/thefix/winners-and-losers/super-duper-tuesday-the-winner.html?hpid=topnews
Excerpt: It was a long -- and exciting -- day (and night) of primaries with Sen. Blanche Lincoln's (D) Lazarus-like performance in the Arkansas runoff and state Rep. Nikki Haley's (R) surprisingly strong showing in the South Carolina gubernatorial primary the two biggest stories nationally. With a total of 12 states from Maine to California voting, Super Duper Tuesday produced its fair share of winners (and losers). Rather than rehash the obvious ones, however, the Fix spent the wee hours of the morning poring over election results and talking to smart strategists about their takes on what happened -- and why.

Republicans put health reform on ballot in push to turn out conservatives
http://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/101881-gop-puts-health-reform-on-ballot-as-turnout-tool
Excerpt: Republicans are banking that anti-health reform ballot initiatives will give them a significant edge in the November midterm elections. The debate on the measures, which will be voted on in a half-dozen states, comes as Democrats are increasing their efforts to bolster support for their signature domestic achievement during the 111th Congress.

Hamdania Squad Leader's Attorney Says Decision Is 'Abuse Of The Process'
http://www.nctimes.com/news/local/military/article_d397d92e-d53c-56a5-bdb6-47ac5443d0f3.html
Guy’s been through three years of hell, he is cleared on a 9-0 vote, and they are appealing. Sure makes folks want to serve this once-great nation. Excerpt: The Navy has decided to appeal a court decision that threw out the murder conviction and sentence of a Camp Pendleton Marine who prosecutors said led his squad in the slaying of an Iraqi civilian in 2006. The Office of the Judge Advocate General announced its decision in the case against Larry Hutchins III on Monday morning, saying it is taking the case to the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. Prosecutors have 30 days to submit their appeal to the Washington, D.C., court. The move comes after the Navy-Marine Corps Court of Appeals dismissed Hutchins' conviction and 11-year prison term on a 9-0 vote on April 22, saying one of his military attorneys had been improperly released from the case shortly before his 2007 trial. Shortly after that ruling, Hutchins was transferred from the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., to the brig at Camp Pendleton while the Navy decided what it would do. The Navy had two options after the lower court dismissed the conviction: It could appeal or send the case back to a Camp Pendleton general for a rehearing.

Rival Chains Secretly Fund Opposition to Wal-Mart
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704875604575280414218878150.html
Using the Useful Idiots for capitalism. Excerpt: Robert Brownson long believed that his proposed development here, with its 200,000-square-foot Wal-Mart Supercenter, was being held hostage by nearby homeowners. He had seen them protesting at city hall, and they had filed a lawsuit to stop the project. What he didn't know was that the locals were getting a lot of help. A grocery chain with nine stores in the area had hired Saint Consulting Group to secretly run the antidevelopment campaign. Saint is a specialist at fighting proposed Wal-Marts, and it uses tactics it describes as "black arts." As Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has grown into the largest grocery seller in the U.S., similar battles have played out in hundreds of towns like Mundelein. Local activists and union groups have been the public face of much of the resistance. But in scores of cases, large supermarket chains including Supervalu Inc., Safeway Inc. and Ahold NV have retained Saint Consulting to block Wal-Mart, according to hundreds of pages of Saint documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal and interviews with former employees. Saint has jokingly called its staff the "Wal-Mart killers." P. Michael Saint, the company's founder, declines to discuss specific clients or campaigns. When read a partial list of the company's supermarket clients, he responds that "if those names are true, I would say I was proud that some of the largest, most sophisticated companies were so pleased with our success and discretion that they hired us over the years."

The Government Wants To Save Newspapers And Media Moguls
http://www.businessinsider.com/the-government-is-preparing-to-bail-out-newspapers-and-kill-blogs-2010-5
Why wouldn’t the leftists in government want to use your tax dollars to save the media that supports them? Excerpt: The Federal Trade Commission has been nosing around how to save journalism and in its just-posted “staff discussion draft” on “potential policy recommendations to support the reinvention of journalism,” it makes its bias clear: The FTC defines journalism as what newspapers do and aligns itself with protecting the old power structure of media.

Voters' support for members of Congress is at an all-time low, poll finds

Guide flushes 'anthrax' down Capitol toilet with tourists nearby
http://thehill.com/homenews/house/102213-guide-flushes-anthrax-down-capitol-toilet-with-tourists-nearby
Too dumb to remember to breathe. Excerpt: An official flushed a white powder from a plastic bag labeled “Anthrax” down a toilet at the Capitol while hundreds of tourists milled around nearby. Capitol Police, who heard about Saturday's incident at the Capitol Visitor Center only later that day, say that instead of breaching security in this way, the tour guide supervisor who handled the powder should have left it alone and informed security. In the past, police have evacuated areas surrounding suspicious packages during inspections. Capitol Police's hazardous devices unit found no traces of harmful biological components, such as anthrax spores, during an inspection Saturday that covered the restroom, the route the supervisor took there, and the area where the bag was found.

Medicaid Cut Places States in Budget Bind
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/08/us/08medicaid.html
Game on. Excerpt: Having counted on Washington for money that may not be delivered, at least 30 states will have to close larger-than-anticipated shortfalls in the coming fiscal year unless Congress passes a six-month extension of increased federal spending on Governors and state lawmakers, already facing some of the toughest budgets since the Great Depression, said the repercussions would extend far beyond health care, forcing them to make deep cuts to education, social services and public safety. Gov. Edward G. Rendell of Pennsylvania, for instance, penciled $850 million in federal Medicaid assistance into the revenue side of his state’s ledger, reducing its projected shortfall to $1.2 billion. The only way to compensate for the loss, he said in an interview, would be to lay off at least 20,000 government workers, including teachers and police officers, at a time when the state is starting to add jobs. “It would actually kill everything the stimulus has done,” said Mr. Rendell, a Democrat. “It would be enormously destructive.”

First victim of health care overhaul?
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0610/38194.html
Our grandkids will remember BO and this Congress as the folks who ruined the best healthcare system in the world. Excerpt: A Virginia-based insurance company says “considerable uncertainties” created by the Democrats’ health care overhaul will force it to close its doors by the end of the year. The firm, nHealth, appears to be the first to claim that the new law has driven it out of business. “We don’t know what the rules are going to be, and, as a start-up, our investors need certainty,” nHealth CEO and President Paul Kitchen told POLITICO. “The law created so much uncertainty that is beyond our control.” Last week, in a letter to the company’s 50 or so employees, Executive Vice President James Slabaugh said nHealth has stopped accepting new group customers and will terminate all business by Dec. 31.

Comparing health systems

Excerpt: Delay is denial of care. In the U.S., only 26 percent of sick adults waited more than four weeks to see a specialist. In Canada and the UK, more than twice as many citizens wait longer than a month to receive the care they need (60 percent and 58 percent, respectively). Source: 2008 Commonwealth Fund International Health Policy Survey of Sicker Adults. The sickest patients need intensive care. In Britain, government hospitals maintain nine intensive care unit beds per 100,000 people. In America, we have three times that number at 31 per 100,000. Source: High-Priced Pain: What to expect from a Single-Payer Health Care System, Heritage Foundation, 9/22/2006. U.S. Care for infants outpaces UK and Canada. In the U.S., we have over six neonatologists per 10,000 live births. In Canada, they have fewer than four and in Britain fewer than three. In the U.S., we have over three neonatal intensive care beds per 10,000 births, just 2.6 in Canada and less than one in Britain. Source: High-Priced Pain: What to expect from a Single-Payer Health Care System, Heritage Foundation, 9/22/2006. Long waits increase pain and morbidity. In the U.S., over 90 percent of seniors receive a hip replacement within six months. In Canada, less than half of patients are treated in the same time (43 percent) with many waiting over a year. In the UK, only 15 percent of patients are treated within six months. Source: Doing Your Own Health Care Thing: American Seniors vs. Canadian Citizens, Heritage Foundation, 7/1/2005. New Poverty Measure Doesn’t Add Up
http://blog.heritage.org/2010/06/08/new-poverty-measure-doesn%E2%80%99t-add-up/
Sure it adds up—to votes bought by the leftists. Excerpt: According to the columnist Robert J. Samuelson, the new Obama poverty measure “fails.” It flunks the test of “political neutrality,” and is based on “misleading statistics that not one American in 100,000 could possibly understand.” That’s because the new calculation would measure poverty on a sliding scale. Thus, if the average income of families in the United States’ increases so too does the poverty threshold. Talk about keeping up with the Jones. This new measure provides the perfect climate for left-leaning politicians to promote equalization of wealth through redistribution. This new measure would bump poverty up 30 percent: more poverty equals more political fodder to argue for increased welfare. Unfortunately, the method currently used to calculate the poverty rate is already skewed, creating a “crisis” of poverty in the United States. This is because only a family’s pre-tax income is included in total income when determining their poverty level. Thus, despite the fact that the average poor household receives $28,000 dollars in welfare benefits annually, these benefits are not included in their income. Not surprisingly then, even though the United States has increased welfare spending by 13 fold (adjusting for inflation) since the war on poverty began in 1965, the poverty rate has stayed much the same. However, the standard of living for the poor has increased substantially. Today, 43 percent of the poor own their own homes (80 percent have air conditioning and only 6 percent say they are overcrowded), approximately 75 percent own a car, 97 percent own a television, and nearly 80 percent have a VCR or DVD player. This definition of poverty, as Samuelson notes, referencing the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan, is scaled up. On the other hand, only about two percent of Americans report that they often do not have enough food to eat.

Pending Trade Agreements = Pending Jobs
http://www.chamberpost.com/2010/06/pending-trade-agreements-pending-jobs.html
Excerpt: U.S. Wheat Associates has released a new study showing that trade agreements directly increase U.S. agricultural exports, farm gate prices, and job growth. However, the study also underscores that U.S. farmers risk losing out in foreign markets while Washington hems and haws over pending trade agreements. In fact, for many American farmers, these agreements could mean the difference between profit and loss:

Bordering Disaster
http://www.investors.com/NewsAndAnalysis/Article/536460/201006041853/Bordering-Disaster.aspx
Excerpt: A Mexican cartel plots to blow up a dam — in Texas! Another pack of Mexican terrorists takes cash from Hugo Chavez. And what is Washington wringing its hands about? Why, racism in Arizona. If still more proof is needed that the border needs to be secured, the latest threats emerging from Mexico should do the trick. Together, they signal that the country's war could advance to a more savage stage.

FBI Data Again Shows More Guns = Less Crime
http://www.nraila.org/Legislation/Federal/Read.aspx?id=5857
Americans understand this in their guts, which is why an estimated 100,000 otherwise law-abiding households in Chicago have an illegal handgun for self protection. Two have recently stopped thugs with them. Excerpt: Anyone needing proof that fanaticism for gun control hasn't waned on Capitol Hill, that anti-gunners are—as Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) put it last year—only waiting to "pick the time," should watch the video of Mexican president Felipe Calderon's speech to Congress last week, versions of which have been posted on youtube.com. When Calderon asked that the federal "assault weapon" ban be re-imposed, a very large number of U.S. Representatives and Senators present gave him a standing ovation. However, on Monday the FBI released crime statistics that should cause the applauding anti-gunners to sit on their hands. The statistics indicate that between 2008 and 2009, as gun sales soared, the number of murders in our country decreased 7.2 percent. That amounts to about an 8.2 percent decrease in the per capita murder rate, after the increase in our nation's legal and illegal population is taken into account. And it translates into about a 10.5 percent decrease in the murder rate between 2004, when the ban expired, and the end of 2009. And finally, it means that in 2009 our nation's murder rate fell to a 45-year low.

Unions Just Flushed $5 Million of Your Tax Dollars Down the Toilet
http://blog.heritage.org/2010/06/09/morning-bell-unions-just-flushed-5-million-of-your-tax-dollars-down-the-toilet/?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=Morning%2BBell
Excerpt: It is not every day we get to agree with the Obama administration. But after Sen. Blanche Lincoln defeated Lieutenant Governor Bill Halter in the Arkansas Democratic Senate primary runoff election, after the AFL-CIO, SEIU, AFSCME poured millions of dollars into Halter’s campaign, a senior White House official told Politico: “Organized labor just flushed $10 million of their members’ money down the toilet.” But it wasn’t just “their members” money that those unions were wasting. This year the Bureau of Labor Statistics confirmed that for the first time in the history of the United States, a majority of union members work for the government, not the private sector. To be exact, 52% of all union members work for the federal or state and local governments. That means more than half of the $10 million that unions wasted just in Arkansas first came from your tax dollars. And the waste goes well beyond Arkansas.

Mexico anger high as US Border Patrol kills teen
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100609/ap_on_re_us/us_border_patrol_shooting
Well, these tactics seem to be working for Hamas, and to expect those who want to take over the US to use them too. Are they angry about the 22,000 Mexicans (and, reportedly over 120 Americans) killed in Mexico’s drug wars? Excerpt: Mexicans are seething over the second death of a countryman at the hands of U.S. Border Patrol agents in two weeks, an incident near downtown El Paso that is threatening to escalate tensions over migrant issues. U.S. authorities said Tuesday a Border Patrol agent was defending himself and colleagues when he fatally shot the 15-year-old as officers came under a barrage of big stones while trying to detain illegal immigrants on the U.S. side of the Rio Grande.

6 Mexicans Tortured, With Hearts Cut Out
http://sweetness-light.com/archive/6-mexicans-tortured-with-hearts-cut-out
No protests over this? Wonder why…oh, it was done by Mexicans. It’s all good. Excerpt: Police discovered six dead bodies in a cavern near the tourist resort of Cancun on Sunday, three of them cut open and their hearts removed. Authorities are investigating the identities of the four men and two women found dead in the natural cave, said Francisco Alor, the Quintana Roo state attorney general. "They were apparently tortured and their chests were opened to remove the hearts," Alor’s office said later in a statement. Three of the bodies had the letter "Z" carved on their abdomens — a possible reference to the Zeta drug gang, though officials did not make an explicit connection to cartel violence that has plagued many parts of Mexico.

Brian Sandoval wins, Harry Reid gets Sharron Angle
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0610/38301.html
Excerpt: Both the Tea Party folks and Reid are happy. We shall see who deserved to be in November. Excerpt: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s daunting path to reelection became a bit easier Tuesday night when Nevada Republicans chose as their candidate a former state assemblywoman whose conservative views Democrats are counting on to alienate moderate voters. Less than two months ago, Sharron Angle barely registered as a blip in the polls here. But her stock skyrocketed following missteps by the then-front-runner, Sue Lowden, and tea party activists and an influential right-wing Washington interest group poured cash into the race to help Angle effectively tap into the anger felt by the Republican base and win the GOP Senate nomination.

Wait one minute
http://www.redstate.com/erick/2010/06/08/wait-a-minute-wait-just-one-minute-on-this/
Excerpt: He is talking to experts not to find out how to solve the problem but to find out whose ass to kick? Seriously? That is the President of the United States in his own words. There is one well leaking caused by the collapse of one platform owned by one company. Not only has Barack Obama not once talked to the CEO of that company, his big donor British Petroleum, he overreacted and shut down every company’s offshore drilling — every single one. He put, effective immediately, tens of thousands of people on the unemployment line.

Greece isn’t enough? Europe needs a weak Islamist economy dragging down the Europe while slipping in jihadists? Excerpt: “We await the day when Turkey joins the European Union in order to be a Trojan Horse, which tells the history.”

Funeral of Mgr. Padovese. Murderer, "I killed the great Satan!"
http://www.asianews.it/news-en/Funeral-of-Mgr.-Padovese.-Murderer,-I-killed-the-great-Satan!-18612.html
Excerpt: Witnesses said they heard the bishop cry out for help. But more importantly, is that they heard screams of Murat immediately after the murder. According to these sources, he climbed on the roof of the house shouted: "I killed the great Satan! Allah Akbar! ".

Random thoughts on the passing scene: By Thomas Sowell

Excerpt: All sorts of "global warming" advocates have all sorts of ideas for cooling the planet. I would be happy if they would just cool the rhetoric. A newspaper headline said: "U.S. Growing Impatient with Iran." Boy, won't that scare them to death? If they keep going, and make enough nuclear bombs to blast us to smithereens, we will go to the United Nations and get a resolution passed, condemning their actions-- or, if the U.N. won't go that far, deploring their lack of cooperation. Contrary to what has been widely believed, scholars say that Neanderthals had bigger brains than we have. Why did they become extinct then? Maybe they got too smart for their own good. When someone in New York says, "Excuse me, sir," you know that you are really old. Umpire Jim Joyce, who publicly admitted that his wrong call cost pitcher Armando Galarraga a perfect game, and Galarraga himself both exhibited grace in the way they reacted to the situation. How long has it been since anyone has done anything that called for the word "grace"? When you consider what an enormous windfall gain it is to be born in America, it is painful to hear some people complain bitterly that someone else got a bigger windfall gain than they did….. Mascots exist to be symbols for others. In all the years when the Arab states controlled the area that Israel took over after the 1967 war, nobody cared what happened to the Palestinians, much less offered them a homeland. Whether Barack Obama is simply incompetent as President or has some hidden agenda to undermine this country, at home and abroad, he has nearly everything he needs to ruin America, including a fool for a Vice President. We have now reached the truly dangerous point where we cannot even be warned about the lethal, fanatical and suicidal hatred of our Islamic extremist enemies in our midst, because to do so would be politically incorrect here and, in some European countries, would be a violation of laws against inciting hostility to groups.

Illegal Immigrants Crime Spree in WA.
http://tinyurl.com/2a6y39p
Excerpt: One woman is dead and two others were raped recently and police say each crime was committed by a different illegal immigrant. One of the sexual assaults happened just hours before the Seattle city council passed an ordinance boycotting Arizona over its new immigration law. Gregorio Luna Luna had a history of beating up his live-in girlfriend Griselda Ocampo Meza. He was also in the U.S. illegally. On May 1, Luna Luna was deported to Mexico. Three weeks later Meza was murdered in her apartment in a violent knife attack. Franklin County prosecutors say Luna Luna slipped past the border again and killed Meza in front of their five year old son. He's in the county jail awaiting trial.

Why Japan and the U.S. Can't Live Without Okinawa
http://marinepatriot.blogspot.com/2010/06/why-japan-and-us-cant-live-without.html
Excerpt: The continued U.S. military presence in Japan has been a growing concern for the Japanese public, and last week it became a lever to pry Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama from office. The first Democratic Party Prime Minister in half a century may have brought that fate upon himself by promising during last fall's election campaign to move a key U.S. air base off Okinawa, and perhaps out of Japan entirely. That promise broke with his predecessors' tradition of treating the U.S. presence in Japan as an American birthright, but what proved to be Hatoyama's undoing was his failure to deliver.

Pass earmark transparency now
http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/Pass-earmark-transparency-now-95817474.html
Excerpt: At a time when the United States is starved for genuine bipartisanship in Congress, the Earmark Transparency Act (ETA) of 2010 should be as welcome as a bottle of spring water to a man lost in the desert. Earmarks are special-interest legislative provisions senators and representatives use to direct tax dollars to favored recipients. Earmarks are typically obscure provisions in must-pass spending bills, so individual items rarely get a specific up-or-down vote. Last year, Congress approved more than 9,000 earmarks worth an estimated $16 billion. The lead co-sponsors of the ETA include Republican Sens. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and John McCain of Arizona and Democratic Sens. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York. Introduced in May, the bill has attracted a lengthy list of Senate co-sponsors, including 11 Republicans and eight Democrats. The co-sponsors span the ideological spectrum from Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-CA, to Sen. Jim DeMint, R-SC. Nonprofits from Americans for Tax Reform to the Sunlight Foundation also support the ETA

Saudi Clerics Call For Adult Breast-Feeding
http://www.timesnewsline.com/news/Saudi-Clerics-Call-For-Adult-Breast-Feeding-1275746201/
Doubtless, Obama will make it mandatory here to not offend Muslims. Excerpt: In a surprising development, two senior Saudi clerics today said that Saudi Arabia’s women should give their breast milk to male colleagues and acquaintances in order to safeguard the Islamic law that forbids mixing between the sexes. The clerics, however, failed to reach an agreement among each other on how the milk should be conveyed. Recently a fatwa had been issued in the country about adult breast-feeding to establish "maternal relations" and preclude the possibility of sexual contact. The fatwa has already generated enough debates and it is likely that the debate over such explicit topics may force the Saudi government to introduce stricter regulations about how and when fatwas should be issued. Sheikh Al Obeikan, an adviser to the royal court and consultant to the Ministry of Justice, had recently said that women who come into regular contact with men, who are not their relatives, should give them their breast milk in order to make them their relatives.

I wonder if there will come an anti-lawyer rebellion, as trial lawyers continue to bleed the economy and taxpayers (who fund the courts), or if people will just get used to it as it gets worse?
