A lot of must-read political news and opinion

A mile away, tops: Woman killed in shooting outside Metro Market on Madison's Far East Side
We shop at Metro every week, very close to our condo. Add this to the recent home invasion a half mile away, the recent mall shooting and the recent murder in a parking lot, about 5 miles away. And we live in a small city and a good neighborhood. Another argument for concealed carry. (Update--they got the guy.) ~Bob

Book Recommendation: Captured! Kindle Edition by Carolyn Paine Miller
Captured! Hardcover – 1977 by Carolyn Paine Miller
This very interesting book has just been re-released on Kindle, for the give-away price of 99 cents. The new release includes updates on the lives of the main characters. Miller was a missionary with her husband in Vietnam, working with the Bru Montagnards to create a written language for them and to translate the bible into their language. (I knew Bru around Khe Sanh in 1967). The Millers and their five-year-old daughter, LuAnne, were captured by the communists in 1975 during their conquest of the Republic of Vietnam after we stopped supplying the Republic with ammo and spare parts. They were held for eight months in primitive conditions, though as non-combatants, were treated far better than members of the American or South Vietnamese military. This fascinating memoir details their struggle to survive the harsh conditions, and to preserve their manuscripts of the bible in Bru, as well as how their faith sustained them in the face of communist interrogations and imposed hardships. You won't be disappointed.

Interesting: Five myths about the New Hampshire primary

Must Read: A Tale of Two Politicians. The Goldberg File by Jonah Goldberg
Excerpt: Hillary called it an “artful smear” last night (I joked on Twitter that Sanders has the “Artful Shmear,” an artisanal bagel shop in Bensonhurst). But here’s the problem: It’s not artful and not a smear. At least by the standard of Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton is incredibly corrupt. The Clinton Foundation alone is a violation of everything Sanders stands for. It’s one giant access-selling enterprise masquerading as a charity. ... Then there’s the whole sordid mess of her husband’s presidency -- and I’m not even talking about his playing Baron-and-the-Milkmaid with the intern. The Clintons rented out the Lincoln bedroom, sold pardons -- including to a shadowy fugitive billionaire! Talk about catering to the “billionaire class” -- and drained so much money from foreign donors (some of it laundered through a Buddhist temple) that 94 people either fled the country, refused to testify, or pled the Fifth. Bernie Sanders has to believe Hillary Clinton is part of the problem. But he won’t say so, save to prattle on about Clinton’s super PACs and speaking fees. That’s amateur-hour stuff.

Worthy Reading: Forget Trump but Not the Trumpsters. Memo to RNC: Stop ridiculing Trump and look at what voters see in him. By Victor Davis Hanson
Excerpt:  Trump is not my preferred candidate. I hope he does not win the Republican nomination. But I understand why millions seem to be mesmerized by his rhetoric. I certainly wish that Trump would not insult rivals and newspeople in callous and uncouth fashion. I would prefer that he come prepared to interviews, with detailed positions rather than his banal “Make America great again” refrain, so akin to the “Hope and Change” nothingness. I notice that he often pauses in midsentence, that he interjects “awesome” and “tremendous” ad nauseam, that he completely abandons his original thought and detours to an extraneous topic. He is a tough brawler, but oddly hypersensitive when his own brand of invective is turned against him. Trump may be an audacious captain of industry, but he certainly pouts a lot. Trump’s use of I, me, my, and mine rivals Obama’s. By now it is thematic that Trump is likely to erupt into anger if he perceives observers as hostile — the anger often in contrast to his earlier praise of these same targets. An ignoramus who adores Trump will be dubbed “brilliant”; accomplished people who criticize Trump are caricatured as ignoramuses.

Worth Reading: After Iowa. By Thomas Sowell
Excerpt: Senator Ted Cruz's upset victory against Donald Trump has robbed "The Donald" of his stock answer to any criticism from rivals— that he is winning and his critics are losers. Now that he has lost, Mr. Trump may finally have to try to come up with some substantive arguments about the complex issues facing this country, rather than simply boast about the great things he will do when he becomes president. Trump may turn out to be like the Wizard of Oz, after the curtain was pulled back to reveal the real man who was been busy projecting an awesome image.

Venezuela has been importing large shipments of newly-printed money, which economists say is likely to worsen the economic crisis. --Foreign Policy Morning Brief. The West and the Tyranny of Public Debt
Excerpt: The history of public debt is the very history of national power: how it has been won and how it has been lost. Dreams and impatience have always driven men in power to draw on the resources of others—be it slaves, the inhabitants of occupied lands, or their own children yet to be born—in order to carry out their schemes, to consolidate power, to grow their own fortunes. But never, outside periods of total war, has the debt of the world’s most powerful states grown so immense. Never has it so heavily threatened their political systems and standards of living. Public debt cannot keep growing without unleashing terrible catastrophes. Anyone saying this today is accused of pessimism. The first signs of economic recovery, harbingers of a supposedly falling debt, are held up to contradict him. Yet we wouldn’t be the first to think ourselves uniquely able to escape the fate of other states felled by their debt, such as the Republic of Venice, Renaissance Genoa, or the Empire of Spain.

Iowa's nightmare revisited: Was correct winner called?
Excerpt: Even as Hillary Clinton trumpeted her Iowa win in New Hampshire on Tuesday, aides for Bernie Sanders said the eyelash-thin margin raised questions and called for a review. The chairwoman of the Iowa Democratic Party rejected that notion, saying the results are final.

Democracy in Action: Sometimes, Iowa Democrats award caucus delegates with a coin flip
Excerpt: Party officials recommended they settle the dispute with a coin toss.
A Clinton supporter correctly called “heads” on a quarter flipped in the air, and Clinton received a fifth delegate. Similar situations were reported elsewhere, including at a precinct in Des Moines, at another precinct in Des Moinesin Newtonin West Branch  and in Davenport. In all five situations, Clinton won the toss.

Pentagon in open brawl over spending priorities. By Austin Wright
Excerpt: A brawl has broken out at the top rungs of the Pentagon over how to prepare the military for long-term threats, in a rare public fight that pits leaders of the military branches against Defense Secretary Ash Carter. Carter wants to use the Pentagon’s upcoming, approximately $580 billion budget request to solidify the Obama administration’s goals of investing in more advanced weapons such as next-generation fighters and submarines, and high-demand skills such as cyber warfare. But he is butting heads with the Navy’s leadership and facing open skepticism from the man in line to be Army secretary, who have disagreed with their boss in recent days over key aspects of the administration’s plans.

Worth Reading: Fraud Passed Off as Science
Excerpt: It is important to note that the widely quoted “97% of scientists” who are claimed to support anthropogenic global warming actually consists of 79 scientists hand-picked by a graduate student for a paper she published. This is not science, it is the anti-intellectual instigation of fear for pay.

Leon High School to Reopen Wednesday Following Arson
A 14-year-old male (something like Quentarius) was arrested for carrying a gun on the property minutes prior to the fire, apparently.  This follows the arrest of a black female student for threatening another student on social media and attempting to stab same with a knife in the cafeteria; security intervened.  School not held Tues.  What they are NOT saying is that with ceiling tiles being burned and smoke containing residue, they have a toxic scene....Our safety training at the hospital stated that when ceiling tiles removed by workmen for any reason, no employee should be in the room where removed. Apparently, depending on age and manufacturer, they may contain asbestos as well as fiberglass....Barb

Keep Blacks Segregated From Whites: UConn building 'black-only' living space to promote scholarship
Excerpt: Faced with alarmingly low graduation rates for black males, the University of Connecticut is trying something it calls bold -- and critics call segregation. (Used to be they howled and screamed about segregation.  Now they want it....this is BP mentality. --Barb. Suggested motto over the door: "Segregation Today, Segregation Tomorrow, Segregation Forever!" The low graduation rates might be because, as Dr. Thomas Sowell points out, in an effort to fill their diversity quota, the Ivies admit blacks who are not ready to work at that level, do not have the preparation or self-discipline to function as advanced students, but who might do well at smaller, local colleges. But this interests of the black students have to give way to the academics need to feel all warm and fuzzy about diversity--now leading to segregation! ~Bob)

The Establishment Strikes Back: In New Hampshire, GOP governors take aim at a resurgent Marco Rubio
Excerpt: The sense of urgency was on display here Tuesday as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie belittled Rubio’s toughness, his intelligence and even his manhood. “Maybe he’ll do more than 40 minutes on a little stage telling everybody his canned speech that he’s memorized,” Christie said to reporters, mocking Rubio’s tightly controlled campaign appearances. “This isn’t a student council election, everybody. This is an election for president of the United States. Let’s get the boy in the bubble out of the bubble.” (Might help Rubio in NJ. ~Bob)

Worth Hearing: Dumbing Down University. By Pat Condell

Excerpt: In fact, today’s campuses mimic ideological boot camps. Tenured professors seek to indoctrinate young people in certain preconceived progressive political agendas. Environmental-studies classes are not very open to debating the “settled science” of man-caused, carbon-induced global warming – or the need for immediate and massive government intervention to address it. Grade-conscious and indebted students make the necessary ideological adjustments.

Connecticut's governor says no return to pre-recession prosperity, By Edward Krudy
Excerpt: Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy delivered a downbeat address on Wednesday, outlining plans to slash government spending and admitting to "a visceral feeling" that there was no going back to the prosperity of pre-recession years. The short and somber address came on the heels of a presentation by Malloy's top budget official, who called for $570 million of reductions next year on top of millions in cuts and tax hikes in previous years. "Our national economy, while making progress from the Great Recession, was fundamentally changed," Malloy, a Democrat, said at his annual state of the state address. "A shifting workforce, the rapid rise of technology, and stagnant wage growth have made this recovery tougher for everyone, everywhere." (The state I have watched for years and wondered how it was keeping together is California, because of its growth in government, tax rates, flight of industry, overregulation, and multiplication of social services.  But they are managing somehow, so far, but I still wonder how long it can go on before some problems become too huge to be borne anymore. All the way across the country from CA is CT, where I was born, grew up, and spent a lot of years working.  It's a place I still am extremely fond of, but I cannot go back there, ever.  It vies with CA in terms of taxes, and a ruinous Democratic Party domination that has taken it from being a prosperous place with a very large industrial footprint to one that has lost a very large chunk of its commercial tax base as the big corporations like United Technologies methodically moved their operations out of state, and GE has just announced they are moving the HQ up to Boston.  Property in much of the state is very expensive, the southernmost region is just like San Francisco real estate now.  There's a whole rank of taxes, from sales tax to income tax to very heavy property taxes, and people retire and move to FL or here to NC.  My friends who still live there bitch nonstop about how it is, and more than half of the ones I used to know now live elsewhere. The kid who killed all the children in Newtown was a known disturbed personality, and his mother's collection of guns was 100% legal and locked up.  He killer her first to get the keys to the gun cabinet, since he had been unable to buy a gun himself due to the restrictions already in place.  So the Dem governor pushed an extreme bill through that declared every semiautomatic rifle with a removable magazine to be an assault rifle that had to be registered with the state cops.  Only about 1/3 of the gun owners complied, in what's basically a minor revolt against a stupid law that had zero to do with what happened in Newtown.  People are fed up, frustrated, but the local GOP can't seem to get their act together to get enough people into the legislature to fight things. The state's finances are not doing well either.  The only advantage there over CA is no drought, although the state doesn't depend much on farming anyhow.  My friends who live there keep asking, how long can this go on?  I wonder about there too.  But today I got this link to the announcement by the governor that things are too bad to ignore now, and measures will have to be taken.  Interesting.  I guess it's true, when something just can't continue forever, ..... it won't. --Del)

What’s Known About China’s Shadowy New ‘Combat’ Force. By Lincoln Davidson

Worth Reading: After Iowa, will Republicans finally get a contest without Trump? By George F. Will
Excerpt: Given Trump’s sexual boasts (“stories of my experiences with women, often seemingly very happily married and important women, this book would be a guaranteed best-seller”), Sasse tweeted: “You brag abt many affairs w/ married women. Have you repented? To harmed children & spouses? Do you think it matters?” Noting Trump’s evident intention to replicate Barack Obama’s anti-constitutional executive authoritarianism, Sasse tweeted, “You talk A LOT about ‘running the country’ . . . as tho 1 man shld ‘run America.’ Questn5: Will you commit to rolling back Exec power & undoing Obama unilateral habit?” Finally: “These r sincere questions & I sincerely hope u answer rather than insult.” Trump responded: “@BenSasse looks more like a gym rat than a U.S. Senator. How the hell did he ever get elected?”

Clinton blasts Wall Street, but still draws millions in contributions
Excerpt: Even as Hillary Clinton has stepped up her rhetorical assault on Wall Street, her campaign and allied super PACs have continued to rake in millions from the financial sector, a sign of her deep and lasting relationships with banking and investment titans. Through the end of December, donors at hedge funds, banks, insurance companies and other financial-services firms had given at least $21.4 million to support Clinton’s 2016 presidential run — more than one of every 10 dollars of the $157.8 million contributed to back her bid, according to an analysis of Federal Election Commission filings by The Washington Post.

Trump Self-Funded? Longtime Trump friend seeded pro-Trump super PAC with $1 million
Excerpt: Casino mogul Phil Ruffin, a longtime friend and business partner of Donald Trump, gave $1 million last year to a super PAC supporting the real estate tycoon's presidential run, just two weeks after the group was formed. The seven-figure contribution from Ruffin, who owns the Treasure Island Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, made up the bulk of the $1.74 million that the Make America Great Again PAC raised before shutting down, according to new documents filed Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission. The super PAC closed up shop in October after The Washington Post reported on multiple ties between the organization and Trump's official campaign.

WaPo Fact Checker: How did ‘top secret’ emails end up on Hillary Clinton’s server? By Glenn Kessler
Excerpt: Clinton said: “When you receive information, of course, there has to be some markings, some indication that someone down the chain thought that this was classified and that was not the case.” But that’s only half of the story. Even without markings, officials are supposed to recognize that information passed through an unclassified system might be deemed as classified and should take steps to protect it. The Clinton campaign has argued that some intelligence officials are now engaged in a game of overclassification. That could well be the case; it’s impossible to know without access to emails that may not be released for years. But this debate would not even be taking place without the decision to set up the private server in the first place. Two Pinocchios

Clinton struggles to answer question about paid speeches to Wall Street firms
Excerpt: Clinton seems to have continuously struggled to find a good response to questions about her paid speeches to Wall Street firms, which is the bedrock of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders's argument against her candidacy. It is also the core of his appeal to Democratic voters who believe income inequality is a central issue in this campaign. This was no exception. Clinton implied that Wall Street firms are not given her "very much money now," even though campaign finance reports show the has netted millions from the financial industry.

Worth Reading: Lessons From California’s Drought. By Victor Davis Hanson
Excerpt: Another irony is that the drought has spiked the radical transition away from open row-crop ground and deciduous tree-fruit to the planting of nut orchards, almonds especially. On the West Side of the valley, water deliveries were all but ended. The water table in some places has fallen below 1,000 feet. Wells and new pumps often cost $250,000 and more. Only the record net profits from almonds (between $5,000 and $9,000 per acre) allow new wells to be drilled. The larger the farm, the more frequently profitable almonds are planted, the more reasonably an operation can afford the cost of buying scarce surface water or drilling deeper—and the more likely smaller farmers sell or lease out their ground to those with the capital to make the costly transition to almond and other nut orchards. The paradoxes continue. Almonds and other nut crops—as well as pistachios and walnuts—are the most mechanized of all California crops. By the time they reach production, they require no hand-pruning, thinning, or harvesting—vastly reducing the soaring expenses for manual farm labor at a time when perhaps a million acres have already gone out of production along with the loss of thousands of farm jobs.

Hard to Believe: President Obama Signs Executive Order Limiting US Gun Owners to Three Guns
Excerpt: In a move that promises to permanently transform the political landscape in the United States, President Obama has signed Executive Order 13752, an order which will radically change the way the United States regulates all weapons. President Obama claims that his authority to draft this order comes from the second amendment: “If you look at the second amendment, you’ll see that it says that ‘a well-regulated militia is necessary to the security of a free state.’ Well, when I see kids getting shot at school and people gunning down their coworkers, I don’t see a well-regulated militia. I don’t see a state that is secure in its freedom. I see a nation in crisis. I see a country in desperate need of reform. If you want to exercise your right to bear arms, that’s fine, but if you want to do that, you should be ready and able to defend your country at a moment’s notice.” (If true, this will go to the Supreme Court. ~Bob)

I cannot find the original posting by Major Coet, but clearly he does exist.  What is said about secrecy and policies in this post makes perfect sense to me, so I think it's worth passing on.  It does make it clearer than ever that Hillary was utterly stupid and arrogant about running her personal server, and totally trashed all the laws and regulations about keeping things confidential.  That does indeed tell us that she is not the person to be in the Oval Office. --Del

Must Read: The ‘establishment’ nonsense. By Charles Krauthammer
Excerpt:  The threat to the GOP posed by the Trump insurgency is not that he’s anti-establishment. It’s that he’s not conservative. Trump winning the nomination would convulse the Republican Party, fracture the conservative movement and undermine the GOP’s identity and role as the country’s conservative party. ... The problem is his, shall we say, eclectic populism. Cruz may be anti-establishment but he’s a principled conservative, while Trump has no coherent political philosophy, no core beliefs, at all. Trump offers barstool eruptions and whatever contradictory “idea” pops into his head at the time, such as “humane” mass deportation, followed by mass amnesty when the immigrants are returned to the United States.

Religion of Peace News

Worth Reading: Typologies Of Terrorism. By Mark Moyar
Excerpt: The term “terrorism” is commonly understood as political violence outside the norms of conflicts between states. Terrorism’s victims can be innocent villains, or they can be political officials or even soldiers. More controversial is the term “terrorist.” Individuals who commit acts of terrorism are often said to be “terrorists,” but that definition can be disputed on the grounds that terrorism is usually a tactic rather than a defining feature of an organization, and hence it makes no more sense to refer to a political movement that employs terrorism as “terrorists” than it does to refer to a country that employs conventional warfare as a “conventional war state.” (Dr. Moyar is an excellent historian and the author of Triumph Forsaken and A Question of Command, both of which I recommend. ~Bob)

Children burned alive in Boko Haram attack
Excerpt: By Sunday afternoon, Nigerian workers had collected 86 bodies from Dalori village, some three miles from the city of Maiduguri. Boko Haram terrorists invaded the Muslim village on Saturday night, throwing firebombs into homes and gunning down fleeing victims.

Interesting: A tough call on Libya that still haunts: Hillary Clinton says the 2011 decision to bomb the country was ‘smart power.’ Critics say it was a failure to learn from Iraq.
Excerpt: Clinton has pointed to the international military operation as a signature moment in her four-year tenure as the top U.S. diplomat: “No one else could have played the role we did,” she wrote in her book “Hard Choices,” adding that acting with European and Arab allies helped “prevent what might have been the loss of tens of thousands of lives.” But Libya today has deteriorated into a virtual failed state run by hundreds of private militias. Eighteen months after the initial airstrikes, U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed in attacks by militants on a U.S. diplomatic post and a nearby CIA site in Benghazi. The North African nation has become a primary outpost for the Islamic State, which has exploited the chaos to take territory, train soldiers and prove its strength outside Syria and Iraq. While the administration’s use of force was widely praised at the time, Libya has become a liability for Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign and one of the central lines of attack on her by the leading Republican candidates — and some Democrats. (Libya was no threat to us, now it's a hellhole for breading terrorists. Bush is rightly criticized for having no plan for after the Iraq invasion; Obama-Clinton had no plan for after the Libya bombing. ~Bob)

Excerpt: Suppose you had a chance to chat with the real-life Sgt. Schultz's in Germany, Sweden, Norway, Denmark. The "interfaith" dialogue would go something like this, after you've reported a crime committed by a Muslim. Sgt. Schultz will claim that he knows everything, he was there, and that you should go back to sleep and pretend nothing ever happened. You were not raped by a Muslim or a gang of Muslims. You did not have your head kicked in by a gang of Muslims. You were not robbed by a Muslim. Or stabbed, or groped, or spit on by a Muslim on a train or on the street. Excerpt: At a conference of coalition members tasked with fighting ISIS in Rome yesterday, Secretary of State John Kerry said members of the terrorist organization are not Muslims but apostates of Islam. “Daesh [ISIS] is in fact nothing more than a mixture of killers, of kidnappers, of criminals, of thugs, of adventurers, of smugglers and thieves,” Kerry said. “And they are also above all apostates, people who have hijacked a great religion and lie about its real meaning and lie about its purpose and deceive people in order to fight for their purposes.” (They were raised Muslim, their leader claims a doctorate in Islamic studies, they pray to Allah five times a day, they quote the Qur'an and Hadith for justification, they have made the Islamic statement of faith that makes one a Muslim, but Imam Kerr says they are not Muslim. Excerpt: As Fox News and other news organizations have reported, America’s federal prisons are a “breeding ground” for potential Islamic terrorists — and have been so for years. Despite this disturbing trend, the Obama administration has enlisted Islamic organizations with known terror ties to review and endorse chaplains to work in federal prisons. ... UN voices alarm at growing number of child marriages in Iran. By Robert Spencer, JihadWatch.org
Excerpt: The UN is alarmed, but this is happening because of Islam, which the UN would never dare criticize. But few things are more abundantly attested in Islamic law than the permissibility of child marriage. Islamic tradition records that Muhammad’s favorite wife, Aisha, was six when Muhammad wedded her and nine when he consummated the marriage: “The Prophet wrote the (marriage contract) with Aisha while she was six years old and consummated his marriage with her while she was nine years old and she remained with him for nine years (i.e. till his death)” (Bukhari 7.62.88).

Excerpt: Obama said: “The Qur’an says whoever kills an innocent, it is as if he has killed all mankind.” This is what the Qur’an really says: Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption in the land — it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one — it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, after that, throughout the land, were transgressors. (5:32) First, note that this is not a general moral principle applying to everyone, as Obama implied, but one only for the Children of Israel. Nor is it is not a general prohibition of killing: there are big exceptions for those who kill “for a soul or for corruption in the land.” And it concludes that even after this command was given, “many of them, after that … were transgressors” — so all it is really saying is that Allah gave a command to the Children of Israel and they transgressed against it. It isn’t anything more than yet another Qur’anic castigation of the Jews.

MEDIA ICONS: WHY 'CHRISTIAN' OBAMA SO CAPTIVATED BY MUSLIMS?
'He talks about how awesome Islam is all the time'
Excerpt: Rev. Franklin Graham of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan’s Purse emphatically stated that Islam was in no way woven into the fabric of America’s founding.  “The foundations of this nation have nothing to do with Islam, but everything to do with the Church of Jesus Christ,” Graham wrote Wednesday on his Facebook page. “Islam cannot save anyone from hell or open the gates of heaven. Only One can do that: Jesus Christ, the Son of God who paid the debt of sin for all mankind by giving His life as a sacrifice on Calvary’s cross where He suffered and died for our sins, took our sins to the grave, and on the third day God raised Him triumphantly to life.

Merkel orders German press not report Muslim migrant crimes
Excerpt: A retired media boss at a major German state broadcaster has admitted his network and others take orders from the government on what — and what not — to report. National public service broadcaster Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF), which was recently forced into a humiliating apology for their silence on migrant violence and sex assault is being drawn into a fresh scandal after one of their former bureau chiefs admitted the company takes orders from the government on what it reports. He said journalists received instructions to write news that would be “to Ms. Merkel’s liking”. (Same in US; no real news and all wearing red/black dress code most nights.  Who tells them to do this?  Can flip channels ABC, NBC, CBS and find same stories, almost same lineup, same time.  Just like the Soviet Pravda. --Barb)
