General News and Comment

Excerpt: The Clinton Foundation’s finances are so messy that the nation’s most influential charity watchdog put it on its “watch list” of problematic nonprofits last month. The Clinton family’s mega-charity took in more than $140 million in grants and pledges in 2013 but spent just $9 million on direct aid. The group spent the bulk of its windfall on administration, travel, and salaries and bonuses, with the fattest payouts going to family friends. (Donations from foreign governments and shady foreign investors tied to the Russian government + enormous expenditures on themselves and their closest backers + giant speaking fees for Bill + little money to the actual good causes they claim motivates them = a giant bribery scheme. Here’s the kicker: “It seems like the Clinton Foundation operates as a slush fund for the Clintons,” said Bill Allison, a senior fellow at the Sunlight Foundation, a government watchdog group where progressive Democrat and Fordham Law professor Zephyr Teachout was once an organizing director. That statement is going to show up in a lot of ads. -- Jim Geraghty, Morning Jolt

Hillary's money for nothing: Cashing in isn't working out for Clinton. By Glenn Thrush
Excerpt: She’s earthy and “funny” just as her friends say — but there’s another side, too, a woman who is unnervingly single-minded in her pursuit of power, privacy and, at times, cash. Either way, there’s probably one more Hillary than any presidential campaign should have. ... But that effort is being undermined by a parallel storyline, and the well-executed New Hampshire trip was blown off basic cable by a barrage of stories Thursday documenting questionable practices by the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation — and illuminating once again what appeared to be the same old indifference to boundaries between charity, politics and wealth.

Simplified bullet point list of Hillary and Bill’s selling out to Russia
Excerpt: You can read the 4,500-word Times article or watch the nine-minute-long summary produced by Fox News, but here’s a simplified tick-tock of the deal: •In September 2005, Bill Clinton traveled to Kazakhstan and met his friend Frank Giustra (pronounced joo-strah), who wanted to buy uranium mines there. •Clinton gave a press conference with Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev, in which he endorsed the leader’s human rights record and democratic progress, even though he had just received 91% of the vote in an allegedly rigged election. The event was a public relations coup for Nazarbayev....

A progressive’s lament about the Trans-Pacific Partnership. By Katrina vanden Heuvel
Excerpt: It has come to this. To sell his trade treaty — specifically the fast-track trade authority that would grease the skids for passage of the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement (TPP), President Obama is mobilizing a coalition anchored by corporate lobbies, the Chamber of Commerce and Republican congressional leadership. He is opposed by the majority of Democratic legislators, the labor movement and a broad array of mainstream environmental, consumer and citizen organizations. (I've been for Free Trade since high school economics with Ben Mark. As Adam Smith pointed out long ago, for a society to advance economically, it needs division of labor, pursuit of self interest and free trade. ~Bob)

Japan’s massive trade opportunity. By Paul Ryan
Excerpt: When Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visits the White House this week, President Obama should offer him a warm welcome — and a friendly challenge. Right now, the United States is negotiating a historic trade deal with Japan and 10 other countries on the Pacific Rim, and one of the key remaining issues is whether Japan will open its agriculture and auto markets to U.S. products. While Abe is in town, the president should urge Japan to drop the trade barriers and close the deal. This trade agreement, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, would give a boost to both of our countries.

Worth Reading: Anti-Trust Law and Lawlessness. By Thomas Sowell
Excerpt: We all make mistakes and some of us learn from them. What is even better is to learn from other people's mistakes, where they pay for those mistakes while we learn free of charge.
Many Americans who say that we should learn from other people, especially Europeans, mean that we should imitate what they did. That may make those who talk this way feel superior to other Americans. But let us never forget that the most disastrous ideologies of the 20th century -- Communism, Fascism and Nazism -- all originated in Europe. So did both World Wars.
More recently, Europe has been belatedly discovering how unbelievably stupid it was to import millions of people from cultures that despise Western values, and which often promote hatred toward Western people.

A Republic No More: Big Government and the Rise of American Political Corruption. By Jay Cost (Author)
Excerpt: After the Constitutional Convention, Benjamin Franklin was asked, “Well, Doctor, what have we got—a Republic or a Monarchy?” Franklin’s response: “A Republic—if you can keep it.” This book argues: we couldn’t keep it.

Oligarchs for Hillary!
For me, the issue this US election season is the corruption. Sure, I'd like a balanced budget and less debt and repeal of Obamacare, but I'm getting used to being sold out on those issues. So I'm down to the bare minimum requirement for a politician: The corruption nauseates me, and, if it doesn't nauseate the candidates, then that explains a lot about why nothing happens on any of those other matters.

Annals of Corruption: What’s Real, What’s Parody? Who can reliably distinguish between satire and reality when Obama, Holder, and Hillary are involved?
Excerpt: We have a “justice” department that prosecutes a senator who made the mistake of crossing the President (Menendez) but declines to do anything about a tax collector who treats American taxpayers differently on the basis of how they vote (Lerner) .... We have replaced equality before the law with a hierarchy of privilege, so that no-name ambassadors can be fired for breaking federal record-keeping requirements by a department whose boss outsources her federal records to her own server and then mass-deletes them with no more thought than when she’s parking her van in the handicapped space.... We have a president who rules by decree on everything from immigration to health care—and a legislature of castrati too craven to object.

How Long Does America Have?
Every week this country is consumed in a new distended orgy of polarized, mutual hatred, set against the backdrop of outrage mobs, race riots, shuttered businesses, scandals, Twitter-induced career ruination, gleeful smear parties, and partisan hackery. Admit it: You’ve asked yourself where America is going, and how long it can survive the trip. Admit it.

Excerpt: I'm struggling to understand why Iraq is strategically irrelevant. Unless you were just being glib, of course. I understand the emotional response to Dempsey's words, but it's more than just the words. A few years ago, thousands of men were told to go and secure that province, those cities; because they were important. Men gave their lives because those places were important. Now, suddenly, they are unimportant. Now, their sacrifices are cheapened. The value put on life is entirely emotional. There is no monetary value. There is no amount that can buy back the dead. Try as we might, there is no universal standard price on human life. There isn't even a national standard price. It is entirely emotional. The value of the sacrifice is also entirely emotional, and in this case open to much interpretation. (Iraq vet lays it all out, in lavender...But not lavender vocabulary, he speaks as a truly pissed off soldier, responding to General Dempsey's recent comments about Iraq. And I feel his anger, and share it. --Del)

Worth Reading: If South Vietnam Were Free Today . . . By Josh Gelernter
Excerpt: Look at the rest of East Asia and imagine what South Vietnam could have been. April 30 will be the 40th anniversary of the fall of Saigon. Forty years after the U.S. abandoned South Vietnam, it’s possible that the most universally accepted lie in American history is that America’s Indochinese intervention was a bad idea. In most circles it’s a truism that Vietnam was a mistake, and few conservatives see it as a point worth arguing. When Republicans talk about Vietnam, they defend the maligned troops. Occasionally someone points out that the Tet Offensive was an American victory. Occasionally, Mylai is balanced with the thousands of comparable, and dozens of incomparably worse, Vietcong and North Vietnamese crimes. Rarely does anyone point out that once Creighton Abrams replaced William Westmoreland as head of U.S. Military Assistance Command in Vietnam, we started winning the war — and that by refusing to live up to our commitments after the Paris Accords, Congress snatched South Vietnamese defeat from the jaws of military victory. Instead of making any of those arguments, though, I’ll point out some facts about modern East Asia. (What a truly important and meaningful comment on how things really turned out with "liberation and justice" as compared to what could, and as far as I am concerned, should have been. --Del)

Worth Reading: Where the Islamic State Gets Its Weapons. By C. J. Chivers
Excerpt: The investigator urged his host, a local security official, to rush after the Kurd and ask if he would allow the rifle to be photographed and its origins ascertained. Soon the investigator (who works for Conflict Armament Research, a private arms-tracking organization in Britain, and who asked that his name be withheld for safety reasons) found a surprise within his surprise. The rifle, which its current owner said had been captured from the Islamic State last year, was not an M-16. It was a Chinese CQ, an M-16 knockoff that resembles its predecessor but has a starkly different arms-trafficking history. The rifle’s serial number had been obscured by grinding, and the roughed-up spot had been retouched with black paint. That two-step effort at obscuring the weapon’s provenance was identical — down to the dimensions of the grinding — to that of Chinese CQ rifles that Conflict Armament Research and the Small Arms Survey, an independent research group in Geneva, had documented in 2013 in the possession of rebels in South Sudan and had traced to a Sudanese intelligence service. The Kurd’s rifle cartridges, too, were from the same Chinese manufacturer (Factory 71) and the same production year (2008) as those previously found in South Sudan.

China overtakes France in vineyards
Excerpt: The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (IOVW) said China now had 799,000 hectares (1.97 million acres) of land devoted to vineyards. That compared with 1.02 million hectares in Spain.

Prelude to a Japanese Revival. By John Minnich

Excerpt: As always with such occasions, the real work, whether on revising guidelines for U.S.-Japanese defense cooperation or negotiating the finer points of Japan's accession to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, will take place long before Abe sits down with Obama. In this sense, his visit is largely symbolic. But this does not make it insignificant. The significance of Abe's trip, like that of the work that precedes and surrounds it, rests in what it tells us about Japan's strategy and what that strategy reveals about ...

Quote by Bernie Zilbergeld
The Chinese pianist Liu Chi Kung was imprisoned for seven years during the Cultural Revolution, during which time he had no access to a piano. When he returned to giving concerts again after he was released, his playing was better than ever. Asked how this was possible since he had not practiced for seven years, he replied: I did practice, every day. I rehearsed every piece I had ever played, note by note, in my mind.

What happened to the young man who died is horrible, the problem is being addressed. But, when a mob scene erupts and blatantly violates the law, breaking into shops, looting, burning down a local business, causing personal harm to the police who have to protect the rest of the neighborhood, this is criminal activity. If you break the law and cause harm to persons or places of business, the police must stop this activity, and that is what rubber bullets are good for. By this activity they are causing only gives the police more reason to protect and defend themselves. I refuse to defend mob activity, and defend the police for any retaliation. --Russel Brummer. For several years in a university classroom, I have been identifying societal factors that would justify a prediction of an additional civil war. Of course, your presaging is proving to be 100% accurate. --Robert "Doc" Woody.

Worth Reading: Why Are They Rioting In Baltimore? By Colonel Donald J. Myers USMC (Ret)
Excerpt: I watched the riots Monday night and also watched on Tuesday morning. I was amazed at the comments from local citizens. The basic premise was that the people were angry and they were tired of black men being routinely killed by policemen. They seemed to believe that it was a daily occurrence. The media seemed to contribute to this by supporting the premise that the rage was valid although it should not include looting and arson. The city of Baltimore has had a democratic mayor since 1967. The police chief and his deputy are both black and the greatest percentage of the officers are also black. The state of Maryland has had a democratic governor since 1969 except for four years when Bob Ehrlich won the governorship. Seven of the eight delegates to the House of Representatives are democratic and both of the federal senators are democrats. The state of Maryland is one of the bluest if not the most blue in the country and it has been led by liberals for nearly 50 years. The school system in Baltimore is struggling to say the least. The last time that I checked, the graduation rate for students who start high school and eventually graduation was less than 50 percent.

Excerpt: The Baltimore bedlam is not a protest. What's going on in Baltimore is not just civic disobedience and it is not a mere riot. It is wanton mayhem that must not stand.

CNN Anchor Brooke Baldwin Blames Military Veterans For Baltimore Riots
Excerpt: After more than a year of CNN pouring gasoline all over America with hysterical, and oftentimes phony, stories of American racism, the left-wing network’s afternoon anchor Brooke Baldwin finally took it to the next level by blaming American veterans for the Baltimore riots.

CNN Analyst Rips Baltimore Mayor: Does She Want To Turn ‘Police Cars,’ ‘Officers’ Into ‘Pinatas?’ By Al Weaver
Excerpt: “What do you think the mayor meant when she referred to giving protestors who wish to destroy space to do that?” “You know, Jake, I think that statement is so absurd. I don’t know how to respond,” Fuentes said. “I would just let her clarify that. Does she want to serve up police cars, or other public buildings in Baltimore or public officials like the police, turn them into piƱatas for the people to come out and whack at them so they can get their aggression out of their system? I’ve never heard a statement like that and I think it’s ridiculous.”

Photos: Looting, arson as Baltimore rampage continues. Martin Barillas
Excerpt: A second day of rioting and looting marred West Baltimore on April 27. At least police officers were injured, while one is reportedly still unresponsive at a local hospital. Police cars and other vehicles were destroyed in by flames, and a store was looted. Police spokesman Capt. Eric Kowalcyzk affirmed that one officer is unresponsive and other suffered broken bones after rioters threw bottles and rocks at the ranks of officers. Kowalczyk said that the rioters are “lawless individuals with no regard for the safety of people that live in that community.” He vowed that the perpetrators will be identified and arrested. In a Twitter message, police said that some of the rioters are juveniles and urged their parents to rein them in.

Maryland Gov. Declares State of Emergency After Violent Clashes in Baltimore
Excerpt: Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan declared a state of emergency today following a violent gathering in Baltimore, where people threw objects at police, set cars on fire and looted businesses. Hogan also activated the National Guard.

National Guard Troops Deployed After Violent Clashes in Baltimore
Excerpt: The standoff began near the Mondawmin Mall in the northwest part of the city, the Baltimore Police Department said, as the group threw bricks, rocks and other objects at officers. Fifteen officers were injured, six seriously, Police Commissioner Anthony Batts said in an evening news conference. Those injuries are not expected to be life-threatening.

Drug Dealer: Freddie Gray Arrest Record, Criminal History & Rap Sheet
Excerpt: Gray had a lengthy arrest record with convictions dating back until at least 2007, according to the Maryland Department of Justice. Not all of the arrests led to convictions, in many of the cases he pleaded guilty to one charge while the others were dropped. Details of when he spent time in prison were not immediately available. His arrest record includes at least 18 arrests: (Taking in his arrest record, he was a drug dealer who was also violent and a thief. Given his circumstances, it is likely he was selling to black folks, helping tear apart black families. Doubtful that he preyed on whites. And they are destroying the community they live n to protest this thug who was destroying black lives. Without knowing the facts. ~Bob)

Worth Reading: Dear Racist, Looting, Rioting Scumbags in Baltimore… By Steven Crowder
Excerpt: You are animals. If you are able to destroy the home or business of your neighbor, you’ve lost your humanity. If you are able to harm your fellow man, to scare their children, to do so with a clean conscience, merely because of something that some cop may or may not have done, which has nothing to do with you… you are a horrible human being. You disgust me, as you should anyone who wishes to be a part of civilized society. Leftists will come to your defense and demand “understanding”. You deserve none. ... To all the decent people left, kiss your wives and hug your children. We are on the cusp of darkness the likes of which this country has never seen.

Maryland Governor and Baltimore Mayor Abruptly Remove Mics and Walk Away During ‘Touchy’ Interview With CNN’s Don Lemon. By Billy Hallowell
Excerpt: Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan abruptly walked away during an interview with CNN’s Don Lemon Monday night after he repeatedly pressed them about their efforts to maintain order amid protests over the death of Freddie Gray, a black man who died of a spinal injury sustained while in police custody. Lemon asked Rawlings-Blake and Hogan why a state of emergency and outside resources weren’t called in over the weekend when demonstrations appeared to be intensifying, with both the governor and mayor responding that officials initially had the situation under control.

Ticked Off ‘Master Sergeant’ Delivers Must-Hear Message on Live TV Amid Baltimore Riots: ‘I’m Not Black…I’m an American.’ By Jason Howerton
Excerpt: A Vietnam veteran took to the streets of Baltimore amid utter chaos on Monday night and urged rioters to go home. He also delivered an amazing, impromptu message on live TV after a CNN reporter approached him. The man, who identified himself as Robert Valentine, said the violent rioters do not “respect” the death of Freddie Gray or the family’s feelings. Gray died of a serious spine injury while in police custody, sparking unrest in Baltimore.

After a night of rioting in Baltimore, fear of violence leads to closures
Excerpt: This wounded city assumed a defensive crouch Tuesday, one day after looters and rioters wreaked havoc on West Side neighborhoods. Malls, museums, courts, federal offices, universities, shops and a baseball stadium all locked their doors out of fear that the mayhem would resume — and potentially spread — despite the hundreds of National Guard members and police officers pouring into the city. Riots erupt across West Baltimore, downtown
The incident stemmed from a flier that circulated widely among city school students via social media about a “purge” to take place at 3 p.m., starting at Mondawmin Mall and ending downtown. Such memes have been known to circulate regularly among city school students, based on the film "The Purge," about what would happen if all laws were suspended.... The flier included an image of protesters smashing the windshield of a police car Saturday during a march spurred by the death of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old man who suffered a spinal cord injury earlier this month after being arrested by city police. ("Purge" of what? Police, EMS, firemen? WHITES? Shouldn't "black lives matter" really be "All lives matter"? Blood is red for everyone.....Hate comes from Evil, not God. Consider the source. --Barb

Baltimore Mayor: Sharpton Is 'Welcome' In City
Excerpts: Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake (D) stated that Al Sharpton and “anyone who wants to add to the calls for peace in our city” “is welcome” during a press conference on Monday. Rawlings-Blake said, “anyone who wants to add to the calls for peace in our city is welcome. I would — if Reverend Sharpton wants to come, if parents want to encourage their children to, you know, act within the law, I met with young people this afternoon, young people who want peace, young people who want justice, they were giving their own suggestions on how young people themselves can add a voice and try to add a sane message, a message that says ‘we don’t — not in our name that you are doing — that you are destroying our city.’

"You're Greener than Gore" News

Worth Reading: California's Water Problem. By Walter E. Williams
Excerpt: Let's examine a few drought facts. California experienced eight major droughts in the 20th century, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. They ranged from two years to as long as nine years, such as that which occurred from 1928 to 1937. In the previous century, there was the bitter drought of 1862-65, which was a catastrophe for the state of California -- made worse by a smallpox epidemic. Scott Stine -- professor of geography and environmental studies at California State University, East Bay -- said that all of these modern droughts were minor compared with California's ancient droughts of 850 to 1090 and 1140 to 1320. One wonders whether California Gov. Jerry Brown and his cadre of environmental extremists would attribute those ancient droughts to man-made global warming. A large part of California's water problem has economic roots. Whenever there's a shortage of anything -- whether it's water or seats at a baseball stadium -- our first suspicion should be that the price is too low.

Water Policy: Profit from Mistakes Rather than Repeat Them. By Lloyd Brown
Excerpt: California's mismanagement of its water -- and government in general -- is benefiting Florida, but the Sunshine State needs to make sure it doesn't begin making the same errors.
With agriculture wilting in California, some agricultural interests are looking for farmland in Florida, according to state officials. That will help the economy but also put more pressure on the water supply.

Worth Reading: Retired generals: Be afraid of ISIS. By Michael Flynn, James Livingston and Michael Smith
Excerpt: Be afraid -- be very afraid. This is the warning the world deserves to hear. Because the leader of the free world refuses to look with clear eyes at the chief security challenges of the 21st century: the fruits of radical Islam. The results of the Obama White House's innovative efforts to make the world a better place can be accounted for in the ever-growing numbers of victims of radical Islam in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. Not to mention here in the United States, Canada and Europe. Is it not a tragic irony that the Arab Spring-era policies of a Nobel Peace Prize recipient accommodated the transition of Syria into the world's newest jihad theater while leaving Libya a failed state and Yemen a failing state? ... Comedian Wonders – If “Moderate Muslims” Hate ISIS, Why Haven’t Any Gone to Fight ISIS. By Onan Coca
Excerpt: Bill Maher continues to hit the nail on the head when it comes to worldwide Islam (Islam and Political Correctness are pretty much the only two things that Maher ever gets right). This past Friday on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, the host pointed out a glaring problem with the argument that moderate Muslims hate terrorism as much as everyone else does. “I mean, why aren’t any ‘moderate Muslims’ ever going to fight ISIS? I’m saying if ISIS is so anathema to ‘moderate Muslims’ how come 0 have gone to fight them?” Maher asked.

Will Obama Pick Another Fight with Israel? By Steven J. Rosen
Excerpt: The concessions that President Obama is making to Iran have alarmed not just the right in Israel but also the left, and forced pro-Israel Democrats to choose between loyalty to the President and steadfast support for the Jewish state. Even former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has cautioned that "we need to all work together to return the special U.S.-Israel relationship to constructive footing, to get back to basic shared concerns and interests."

Excerpt: Yom Ha’shoah or Holocaust Day, marked this year on Thursday, April 16, will commemorate 70 years since the end of World War II, and the liberation of the Nazi death camps. The horrific toll anti-Semitism and Nazi racial hatred exacted on humanity in general and Jews in particular can never be overemphasized. The dwindling numbers of survivors carry the pain of losing loved ones, and the brutality of the Nazis and their helpers in Eastern and elsewhere in Europe. Six million innocent Jews were murdered, including 1.5 million children. Humanity was a loser as well. Millions of educated and productive Jews, who might have become inventors of new medical cures, scholarly researchers, poets, writers, and entrepreneurs, were sent to the gas chambers for the crime of being born Jewish. Europe has blood on its hands, but little remorse. Anti-Semitism in Europe has gone viral in 2014, and has grown worldwide. Iran Demands Israel Renounce Nuclear Weapons
Excerpt: Iran led the call by non-aligned nations on Monday for Israel to give up its cache of nuclear weapons. Addressing the conference on the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif placed a target on the Jewish state. Zarif insisted that the 120-nation Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is demanding that "Israel, the only one in the region that has neither joined the NPT nor declared its intention to do so, (...) renounce possession of nuclear weapons."

ISIS leader Baghdadi is reportedly 'unable to move' after a spinal injury
Excerpt: The head of the Islamic State is reportedly injured so badly he can barely move, Kareem Shaheen at The Guardian reports. "Sources tell us Baghdadi is still alive, but still unable to move due to spinal injury sustained in the March air strike," Shaheen tweeted. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who last year declared himself caliph of the Islamic State (also known as ISIS, ISIL, and Daesh), was reportedly wounded in a US-led airstrike in March.

Excerpt: While insisting that the concept of marital rape does not exist in Islam, religious scholars say it is sinful for a Muslim man to force his wife to have sex when she is ill or menstruating. Perak Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria said that men can always have sexual intercourse with their spouses even if the latter do not agree, saying that a Muslim woman has “no right” to reject her husband’s demand. “Even the Prophet says even when they’re riding on the back of the camel, when the husband asks her, she must give.

In his announcement, Alexander Soros makes it very clear that this “civil rights” movement is his organization’s primary focus. UN plan to settle 1M refugees an invitation to terror, critics warn
Excerpt: The humanitarian disaster unfolding on the Mediterranean is likely already providing a "shield" for Islamist terrorists to infiltrate waves of migrants attempting the perilous crossing from North Africa to Europe, terrorism experts and other strategic observers are warning..... Former Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi had spoken of dispatching tens of thousands of migrants to Europe as a political weapon to transform the identity of continent, Phares recalled – and now jihadist militias had “opened the path” for them. “This is an urban militant campaign masterminded by jihadist forces on the ground in Libya,” he said, identifying the human-trafficking puppet masters as ISIS, Al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood, the transnational Islamist organization founded in Egypt.
