Not-to-be-missed political news and comment

Book Recommendation: Rendezvous with Destiny: How Franklin D. Roosevelt and Five Extraordinary Men Took America into the War and into the World by Michael Fullilove
This well-written, well-researched book is a must for history and political buffs. Fulliove details how FDR used five special envoys-- Sumner Welles, Bill Donovan, Harry Hopkins, Wendell Willkie and Averill Harriman--as special envoys to Europe to educate himself on the real situation and decide if it was worth betting American Aid on Britain and the USSR before we were in WWII. They also educated European leaders, especially Churchill and Stalin, on FDR's thinking, US support for defeating Hitler and the domestic political situation in the US. By December 7 we were already waging ideological and economic war. The information they passed to FDR was instrumental in passing Lend Lease, which provided a lifeline to Britain. While I think the author is clearly an admirer of all six men, that doesn't nor stop him detailing their flaws and errors. This book will fill in a lot of gaps in your knowledge of that period.

Must Read: Why Is There Global Poverty? By John C. Goodman
Excerpt: Now here is the good news. In the last quarter of the 20thcentury, countries around the world turned away from collectivism and began to liberalize their economic systems. Country after country turned to privatization, deregulation, liberalized international trade and freer markets. The results have been stunning. As the chart below shows, 80 percent of the world’s worst poverty (people living on the income equivalent of less than a dollar a day) was eradicated in the past 40 years. Nothing like that has ever happened before. (“Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty. This is known as "bad luck.”  --Robert A. Heinlein

Worth Reading: Divided, They’ll Fall. The Democrats could be coming apart. By Fred Siegel
Excerpt: The Black Lives Matter movement, financed, in part, by billionaire George Soros, rebuffed the Democratic Party’s attempts to win its formal favor—even though the resolution put the Democrats on record as supporting “the hands up, don’t shoot” mythology that emerged from the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. On the anniversary of Brown’s death, the Washington Post published a long article finding that the “vast majority” of the 585 people killed by the police during the first seven months of 2015 were armed with deadly weapons. Moreover, most were white or Hispanic. Just 24 were unarmed black men. Nonetheless, a virulent anti-police campaign ensued after Ferguson, leading police in cities such as Milwaukee, St. Louis, and Cincinnati to back off from enforcement. St. Louis police chief Sam Dotson calls this “The Ferguson Effect.”

EVEN MARINES CAN'T TAKE STUPID OFF THE TABLE. By Col. Andy Weddington, USMC (Ret)

White House: US airstrike on Afghan hospital 'profound tragedy'
Excerpt: White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Tuesday that the U.S. airstrike on an Afghanistan hospital where aid workers were operating was a "profound tragedy" and President Obama wants a "full accounting of what transpired" -- but clarified that the Justice Department is not involved in any investigation after earlier saying it was.

In 1965, A Conservative Tried To Keep America White. His Plan Backfired
Excerpt: Fifty years after its passage, it is clear the law definitively altered the complexion of the U.S. population. In 1965, the immigrant share of the population was at an all-time low. Eighty-five percent of the population was white, and 7 out of 8 immigrants were coming from Europe. By 2010, the share of the U.S. population born overseas had tripled, and 9 out of 10 immigrants were coming from outside Europe.

Worth Reading: The Insiders: The Bureau for a Likable and Authentic Hillary (BLAH) is faltering. By Ed Rogers

Excerpt: Her temperament is perfectly unsuited for the presidency. ‘ Good morning, ma’am,” a member of the uniformed Secret Service once greeted Hillary Clinton. “F*** off,” she replied. That exchange is one among many that active and retired Secret Service agents shared with Ronald Kessler, author of First Family Detail, a compelling look at the intrepid personnel who shield America’s presidents and their families — and at those whom they guard. (They say you can judge people by how they treat those, like waiters, they view as their inferiors. ~Bob)

SHOOTING IN GUN-FREE AUSTRALIA LEAVES ‘AT LEAST TWO DEAD’

Oregon gunman was Army dropout who studied mass shooters
The 26-year-old gunman who opened fire on fellow students in his community college English class, killing nine people, was an Army boot camp dropout who studied mass shooters [WHOOOA!] before becoming one himself.

Victims of Oregon shooting
So shooter "mixed race"--read black.  Guess what?  Not only were the victims "Christians," they were ALL WHITE.  Where did this approved hatred come from?  Black Lives Matter and the selfies in the White House with Valerie Jarrett--from the very top. --Barb

OBAMA SHARES RESPONSIBILITY FOR OREGON MASSACRE. Exclusive: Jesse Lee Peterson asks, 'How many Americans are being killed by gun control?'
http://www.wnd.com/2015/10/obama-shares-responsibility-for-oregon-massacre/
Almost before the bodies of the Umpqua Community College shooting victims were cold, Barack Obama was lecturing the American people: “We collectively  are answerable to the families who lost loved ones.” Obama seethed like a child. ...This Marxist doesn’t care about the shooting victims. But he knows that as long as we are armed, he can’t assert total control over us. (Black author. --Barb)

Worth Reading: : Michael Gerson commentary: Obama’s gun speech nothing but posturing
Excerpt: Even if you support “common-sense gun legislation” (as I do), there was nothing in Obama’s speech that effectively argued for it. No policy proposals or serious justifications. No one listening to the speech would be persuaded to take a position he or she did not already hold. Obama was saying, in essence, that it is obvious what we should do about mass gun violence, that evil people are blocking it and that they have innocent blood on their hands. This is apparently what some liberal people think when anger releases them from civility and rationality. Obama speaks as if the gun laws he wants passed would put an end to these killings — a position for which there is no evidence. I believe that more thorough background checks and further restrictions on the type and firepower of weapons, along with improved health services for the severely mentally ill, would be good for our society, apart from mass killings. (It’s a great point, but Obama’s lack of interest in seriously engaging with those who disagree with him has been obvious for some time now -- going back to his “I won” declaration in his first negotiations with Congressional Republicans. When the president wanted to pass Obamacare, he resorted to the Cornhusker kickback and reconciliation as public skepticism and opposition remained solid. Immigration reform is enacted by executive order. The Iran deal gets rammed through despite House and Senate majorities opposing it; Obama dismissed opponents as warmongers who make “common cause” with Iranians chanting “death to America!” When the Senate wouldn’t confirm his nominees, he just declared them “recess appointments” even though the Senate wasn’t in recess. Earlier this year, he dismissed his opponents as “the crazies.” His discussion of ISIS featured a lecture to Christians to get off their “high horse.” Obama’s entire presidency is marked by statements and behavior that suggest he’s willing to engage and negotiate with the world’s most brutal regimes, like Iran, but he finds his American critics and opposing lawmakers too silly, extreme, or malevolent, inherently beyond the pale. --Jim Geraghty, Morning Jolt.)

http://www.nationalreview.com/article/423183/rant-second-amendment-repeal?utm_source=jolt&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Jolt10062015&utm_term=Jolt
Excerpt: Make no mistake: It’ll be unpleasant strolling into Pittsburgh or Youngstown or Pueblo and telling blue-collar Democrat after blue-collar Democrat that he only has his guns because he’s not as well endowed as he’d like to be. It’ll be tough explaining to suburban families that their established conception of American liberty is wrong. You might even suffer at the polls because of it. But that’s what it’s going to take. So do it. Start now. Off you go. (Dear Democrats: Please, please, please run on national gun confiscation in 2016. Worth Reading: Putin’s Air Strikes in Syria Are Merely the Latest Example of the Obama Doctrine’s Failure. By Jonah Goldberg
http://www.nationalreview.com/article/424958/putin-obama-syria-air-strikes
Excerpt: If the humiliation of the Obama administration continues at this rate, by this time next week you should expect to see Secretary of State John Kerry on all fours at the United Nations, getting paddled by the Russian foreign minister and shouting, “Thank you, comrade! May I have another?”

Why Obama is Opposed to Israel - by Bishop E. W. Jackson, Sr.
Excerpt: The classic left wing view is that Israel is the oppressive occupier, and the Palestinians are Israel 's victims. Obama is clearly sympathetic to this view. In speaking to the “Muslim World," he did not address the widespread Islamic hatred of Jews. Instead he attacked Israel over the growth of West Bank settlements. Surely he knows that settlements are not the crux of the problem. The absolute refusal of the Palestinians to accept Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state is the insurmountable obstacle. That's where the pressure needs to be placed, but this President sees it differently. He also made the preposterous comparison of the Holocaust to Palestinian “dislocation”.

Forget about changing the Second Amendment. And stop focusing on mass killings. By Greg Sargent, Washington Post.
Excerpt: I chatted about these ideas today with Adam Winkler, a professor of Constitutional law at the University of California who is the author of “Gunfight: The battle over the right to bear arms in America,” an even-handed history of guns in America and the political, legal, and policy battles over them. A transcript of our conversation, lightly edited for length and clarity, follows:

Interesting: Trump Wrongs the Right. By RICH LOWRY & RAMESH PONNURU
http://www.nationalreview.com/article/425010/donald-trump-lowry-ponnuru
Excerpt: Consider only these facts: Trump has been leading the polls for the Republican presidential nomination for months, and he basically never says “freedom” or “liberty.” He gives no indication of caring about the Constitution. He talks only sparingly about the federal debt. He has, in short, ignored central and longstanding conservative tenets that seemed to have become only more important in the tea-party era — and he has not only gotten away with it, but thrived (so far). How is that possible? Trump is truly a different kind of political phenomenon. He is supposed to be an outrageous right-winger, but he draws support fairly evenly across all factions of the Republican party and is heterodox or indeterminate on key policy questions.

Excerpt: "I came to this country for freedom and I cannot believe this is happening all over again in this country," she continued. "I don't know what happened to America, the Shining City on the Hill for freedom." She also warned against Americans comparing their children and their "education" to those being indoctrinated in China. "I am telling you, Chinese children are not trained to be independent thinkers," she said. "They are trained to be massive skilled workers for corporations. And they have no idea what happened in Tienanmen Square in 1989 where government ordered soldiers to shoot its own 1,000 students."

Worth Reading: What Should Be Next For The GOP: An Alternative To Obama Policies. By John C. Goodman
Excerpt: That brings us to the most important missed opportunities. It’s been five and a half years since the passage of Obamacare. In all that time: Congressional Republicans have yet to unite behind an alternative to Obamacare. Worse, they haven’t even held hearings on how Obamacare might be replaced. Worse still, they haven’t even held serious hearings on the worst problems in ObamaCare – problems that desperately need fixing with some kind of replacement. To top it off, the Republicans haven’t been able to articulate a vision describing what health care would look like if they were ever in charge. This is not a John Boehner problem. This is a party problem.

Excerpt: While she rails against Wall Street’s influence on Washington, the progressives’ darling may be helping line the pockets of the multi-millionaire hedge-fund manager behind her favorite think tank.

Fact Check: Are mass shootings really becoming routine? Examining the president’s claim that gun violence is worse in the United States than everywhere else By DANIEL JAMES DEVINE
Excerpt: In June, the fact-checking website PolitiFact rated Obama’s comments “mostly false” because they failed to recognize mass shootings that have occurred in other nations with populations much smaller than the United States. In Norway, for example, Anders Behring Breivik killed 80 people in a July 2011 shooting and bombing rampage. Germany has seen at least six mass shootings since 2000, including one in 2009 when a teenager with a gun fired on teachers and students in a secondary school.

What Obama doesn't understand about Oregon shooter Chris Mercer

From the Left: Jeb is cooked: Why megadonors’ millions (probably) aren’t going to save Bush’s disastrous campaign
Excerpt: In Iowa, Republican Jeb Bush leads Clinton by 10 points in a hypothetical general-election match up among registered voters, 50 percent to 40 percent, and Donald Trump is ahead of her by seven points, 48 percent to 41 percent - essentially unchanged from the poll's results a month ago. And Carly Fiorina leads Clinton in the Hawkeye State by 14 points, 52 percent to 38 percent.

Hillary Calls for New Laws That Wouldn’t Have Stopped the Oregon Shooter. By Jim Geraghty
http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/425095/hillary-calls-new-laws-wouldnt-have-stopped-oregon-shooter-jim-geraghty
The Oregon shooter bought his guns legally. So did the Roanoake, Virginia shooter. The Tucson shooter passed a background check. The Aurora, Colorado shooter bought all of his guns legally. Hillary blamed the Charleston shooter’s ability to buy a gun on a “loophole in the Brady Bill.” It wasn’t a loophole in the law; it was that local and FBI officials simply didn’t do their job correctly:

Survey: Crooks get guns from pals, don't keep them long
Excerpt: In a survey of almost 100 detainees in the Cook County Jail, few said they get firearms at gun shows or through the Internet, said Harold Pollack, co-director of the crime lab. They also said they don’t normally steal guns or buy them at a licensed store.

1) Fits the profile of an Obama supporter perfectly 2) Secular, hated religion so much he asked each student if they were Christian...if they were he shot them in the head, if they weren't he shot them in the legs 3) Mercer was one of millions of the "Obama Generation"...25 years old, unable to find a career job in Obama's economy, still living at home with his mommy. 4) Going to community college and sucking down big student loan dollars (which taxpayers will now have to pay off since with his death) 5) Mixed raced minority, which made him eligible for a whole host of favorable hiring quotas and free minority scholarships....fits the perfect profile as one of Obama's "sons". 6) Ignorant liberal who embraced wholly Obama's agenda of "conquer, divide and promote economic and racial hate" 7) Lived in a state that had just enacted strict gun control laws, such that the college was guarded by two unarmed security personnel, thus making it impossible for anyone to defend themselves against those who flaunt the gun laws and make their enactment laughable.

Islamic State murders 12 Christians for refusing to renounce Christ
Kind of like the Oregon shooter. ~Bob

Excerpt: According to a Swarthmore College student’s op-ed, the real reason that people make fun of pumpkin-spice lattes is that our society thinks everything girls like is stupid because “girls don’t get to have valid emotions.” “It all comes back to sexism,” Min Cheng writes in a piece for The Phoenix, Swarthmore’s official student newspaper. “People love to hate on what girls like.”

U.S. vs. Russia: What a war would look like
Excerpt:  With the launch of airstrikes in Syria, Russian President Vladimir Putin instigated a proxy war with the U.S., putting those nation's powerful militaries in support of opposing sides of the multipolar conflict. And it's a huge gamble for Moscow, experts say. (This is a VERY long and in-depth article.  It lays out the difficulties for both the Russians and us, though I think it minimizes ours.  It also takes no account of the importance of the lack of willingness to do battle on our side.  If "we"--meaning the administration--aren't willing to defend our interests, we will surely lose them.  --Ron P.)

Worth Reading: Pope Burnout. By Victor Davis Hanson
Excerpt: A fair-minded person might infer from his advice that capitalism is more prone to impoverish than to create enough wealth to bring the underclass out of poverty. Yet the poor in the free-market United States are mostly better off than the middle classes in Pope Francis' homeland. Argentina's statism has transformed one of the most resource-rich countries in the world into an impoverished nation. Are the wages of socialism therefore less than Christian? Authoritarian regimes such as the Castro dynasty in Cuba or Iran's theocracy do not receive much criticism from the pope for their administration of state justice. Yet Francis blasted capital punishment, which in America is mostly reserved for first-degree murderers, not the perpetrators of thought crimes as in Cuba and Iran.

ISIS Cuts Off Fingertips of 12-Yr Old Christian Boy
Excerpt: A spokesperson for Christian Aid said, “In front of the team leader and relatives in the crowd, the Islamic extremists cut off the fingertips of the boy and severely beat him, telling his father they would stop the torture only if he, the father, returned to Islam. When the team leader refused, relatives said, the ISIS militants also tortured and beat him and the two other ministry workers. The three men and the boy then met their deaths in crucifixion." Eight other aid workers were separately executed for refusing to denounce their faith. In front of a crowd that was summoned to watch, two of the workers, women aged 29 and 33, were raped before all eight were beheaded. (These barbarians are a total waste of oxygen and should be annihilated from the planet. --JB. Comment from the Pope? ~Bob)

Why Hillary Clinton’s gun-control push puts Bernie Sanders in a bind
Excerpt: Earlier this year, Slate's Mark Joseph Stern referred to that vote by Sanders as being for "the most reprehensible pro-gun legislation in recent memory." But Sanders, Stern acknowledges, had an existing record of support for gun owners and opposition to expansions of gun regulations. As our David Fahrenthold noted in July, the NRA actually helped Sanders get elected to Congress.

Why Hillary Clinton is more progressive than Bernie Sanders, in one sentence
Excerpt: Bernie Sanders attracted a 20,000-person crowd in Boston over the weekend with his uncreative wish list of a platform, in which college would be free for all, Social Security would be expanded for all and medical coverage would be highly subsidized for all — regardless of whether you actually need the help. Hillary Monday against “progressives” who propose shoveling public benefits at rich and poor alike. One sentence in particular drew a clear distinction between her campaign and Sanders’s: “I am not in favor of making college free for Donald Trump’s kids,” she said,...

The Untold Story of JFK's Sister, Rosemary Kennedy, and the Disastrous Lobotomy Ordered by Her Father
Excerpt: After the secret surgery, it would be another two decades – after Joe became incapacitated by a severe stroke in 1961 – before any of Rosemary's eight siblings would learn the truth about their sister's disappearance: she was living at a Catholic facility for the mentally disabled in Jefferson, Wisconsin, hidden from public view.

Immigration Crisis in Hungary

The pen, phone, and stray voltage. By Major Garrett, CBS
Excerpt: The White House saw the contentious wrangling over the dimensions of the gender pay gap nationally -- even the gnawing over male/female pay disparities at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave -- as a gift. A gift the White House wrapped for itself. ... This is the White House theory of “Stray Voltage.” It is the brainchild of former White House Senior Adviser David Plouffe, whose methods loom large long after his departure. The theory goes like this: Controversy sparks attention, attention provokes conversation, and conversation embeds previously unknown or marginalized ideas in the public consciousness.

For decades, the government steered millions away from whole milk. Was that wrong? By Peter Whoriskey
Excerpt: In fact, research published in recent years indicates that the opposite might be true: millions might have been better off had they stuck with whole milk.
Scientists who tallied diet and health records for several thousand patients over ten years found, for example, that contrary to the government advice, people who consumed more milk fat had lower incidence of heart disease.

Bangladesh: Muslims attack Christian pastor with knife, attempt to slit his throat

How Islam Creates Sociopaths
When I was getting my degree in Middle East Studies (1968-70), terrorism against western victims was a new and small, if tragic thing. However, if you look at this article, the author, a psychologist, confirms the cultural attributes of the Arab society I documented. (I'm sure I still have that paper.) And now these cultural norms have metastasized under Islamism into the pervasive phenomenon of today. It may be impossible to change this in situ, but it should inform our immigration policies and our educational systems. With the demographics we have in the United States at present, we can make a difference here. And thankfully, there are many, many Muslims here who have bought into our culture of tolerance and the supremacy of civil law. (It should be noted that radical Muslims are legally organizing politically under our laws, http://architectguy.me/2015/10/05/star-spangled-shariah-the-rise-of-americas-first-muslim-brotherhood-political-party/?utm_source=Israel+List&utm_campaign=c9a72890a4-RSS_EMAIL_CAMPAIGN&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_6e1c03f903-c9a72890a4-142433513).
