Interesting Political News, Thoughtful Comment and Some Good Pictures

Update

Short Health Update: All Good. I've been off supplemental oxygen now for 17 days and the OI2 sats are fine. I haven't been in the hospital since July 7, two months. My FEV numbers average Sunday was 1.54, compared to 0.91 on July 7. In rehab Monday I added two minutes on the treadmill, so 22 at 2.3 MPH plus the 2-minute cool down at 1.5, and the O2 stayed at 94% or above. Did 5 sets of 10 reps each on the chest press (added 10 lbs Friday) the leg press, the lap pull and the resistance band. Breathing still some labored with exercise, but not as much. Clearly the BiPAP is helping. I bought a car adapter so was able to use it for 6 hours in the car Sunday, as we made a quick visit to the Chicago area. So steady progress right now.

I was out of Pocket Sunday and at Rehab Monday morning, so I have about 40 emails I haven't had time to get to, but thought I'd better post what I have. ~Bob

Book Recommendation: Texans Guns And History. By Col. Charles Askins
Written in a folksy, story-telling style, this is an entertaining tale of Texas Rangers, Indians, lawmen, killers, rustlers, and gunslingers that will be an enjoyable history for those who like westerns. It starts with the rangers in the 1870s and ends with Bonnie and Clyde. First published in 1970, the author lacked the benefit of political correctness and multiculturalism. For example, instead of calling the Indians "Native Americans," he calls them savages, because when they took prisoners, white, Hispanic or Indian, they amused themselves torturing the men to death over a period of days. The women were repeatedly raped. If they withstood that, and were attractive enough, they might be kept as slaves, otherwise they met the same fate. I mean who are we to judge their culture? When you don't have cable, the best entertainment around is listening to another human scream his lungs out as you slowly peel the skin from his body with a knife. The book has lots of reports of shootouts.

Poll: Walker Ahead, School Choice Wildly Popular in WI. By Daniel Doherty
Excerpt: The survey of these districts also found that Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker has a one point lead over his Democratic challenger, Madison School Board member Mary Burke (47 percent to 46 percent, respectively). ... Walker has pledged to expand the state’s government-subsidized private school voucher program; his opponent, Mary Burke, wants it abolished. So perhaps Walker should feel good about where he stands on this particular issue: after all, the NMB Research poll found that education reform initiatives in the state are wildly popular:

The 1980s are calling again, Mr. President: Russian strategic bombers near Canada practice cruise missile strikes on US
Excerpt: Two Russian strategic bombers conducted practice cruise missile attacks on the United States during a training mission last week that defense officials say appeared timed to the NATO summit in Wales....Analysis of the flight indicated the aircraft were conducting practice runs to a pre-determined “launch box”—an optimum point for firing nuclear-armed cruise missiles at U.S. targets, said defense officials familiar with intelligence reports.Disclosure of the nuclear bombing practice comes as a Russian general last week called for Moscow to change its doctrine to include preemptive nuclear strikes on the United States and NATO.

Republican Wallops Democrat in Gubernatorial Debate
Excerpt: On Thursday night Kashkari did battle with Governor Brown on the debate stage and most observers called the challenger the clear victor. It was the only debate the two men will hold and for the Republican it will have to be enough. He is the underdog in a very blue state – but things are bad enough in California that voters may be willing to vote for a moderate Republican if it means finding work sooner rather than later.

Obama Narrative Falls Apart: Fed Reveals Rich Got Richer Under Obama while the Poor Lost Money
http://lastresistance.com/7181/obama-narrative-falls-apart-fed-reveals-rich-got-richer-obama-poor-lost-money/
Excerpt: According to Jennifer Pompi of the Washington Times: “Under President Obama, the richest 10 percent were the only income group of Americans to see their median incomes rise, according to a survey released this week by the Federal Reserve. The Fed data covered the years 2010-2013, during which period Mr. Obama constantly campaigned against income inequality and won re-election by painting his Republican rival as a tool of Wall Street plutocrats.”

Rick Perry’s Indictment Should Scare All Americans. By Pat Nolan
Excerpt: The indictment of Governor Rick Perry should send a shudder down the spine of every American. The vindictive special prosecutor used Humpty Dumpty’s logic to say statutes say the opposite of their plain meaning in order to charge the governor with a crime for exercising his lawful veto. If a popular sitting governor can be indicted on such a flimsy basis, then every one of us is vulnerable.

More IRS employees lost emails
Excerpt: The IRS on Friday told Congress that five of the 82 people being questioned about the agency’s tea party targeting scandal lost emails as a result of computer crashes, including one official who worked closely with former IRS official Lois Lerner. ... The same letter — in which Issa also thanks Koskinen for agreeing to testify at a Sept. 17 hearing — says TIGTA found 760 unsearched exchange server drives that could possibly have back-ups of Lerner’s emails. The IRS, TIGTA told the panel, never searched these drives to find Lerner’s emails. “The IRS’s ever-changing story is practically impossible to follow at this point, as they modify it each time to accommodate new facts,” Issa said in a statement.

Labor Participation Rate Drops To Lowest Since 1978; People Not In Labor Force Rise To Record 92.3 Million. Tyler Durden
Excerpt: It is almost as if the Fed warned us this would happen. In a note released yesterday, a Fed working paper titled "Labor Force Participation: Recent Developments and Future Prospects", looked at the US labor force and concluded that "while we see some of the current low level of the participation rate as indicative of labor market slack, we do not expect the participation rate to show a substantial increase from current levels as labor market conditions continue to improve." But don't blame it on the greatest recession/depression since 1929: "our overall assessment is that much - but not all - of the decline in the labor force participation rate since 2007 is structural in nature."

Ravens sack Ray Rice after video emerges of elevator punch
Excerpt: The Baltimore Ravens fired running back Ray Rice after new video emerged showing the vicious punch he used to drop his then-fiancée in the elevator of an Atlantic City hotel. 'It's coming': The rare and dangerous virus spreading to kids nationwide
Excerpt: CDC officials believe human enterovirus 68 (HEV68) is at the root of the mysterious epidemic; they are waiting on test results to confirm the suspicions. HEV68 has no vaccine and no specific treatment, although some experts say the whooping cough and flu vaccines may help prevent children from contracting the virus. ... Mary Anne Jackson, Children's Mercy Hospital's director of infectious disease, says the outbreaks may have begun "right after school started.

IRS Had 'Secret Research Project' On Conservatives. Lois Lerner warned colleague questions by Congress were 'dangerous.' By Garth Kant
Excerpt: The government watchdog group Judicial Watch has unearthed more bombshells in the IRS scandal, using the federal court system to get information Congress has been unable to obtain directly from the tax agency or the Justice Department. ... The just-released emails reveal the IRS had a “secret research project” using lists of donors to mostly conservative organizations that an agency attorney appeared to admit it never should have had in its possession.

Chicago ERs from a blog reader
Worked 12 hour shifts at airport Police Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Was Dragging when I get home after 1800. So I do not get to catch up on newspapers And e-mails until Monday. Front page of Jacksonville daily rag. "Navy sending Navy doctors to train in the ERs of Chicago hospitals - closest environment to combat!" I kid you not. As Scotland vote looms, Britain could be on the verge of breakup
Excerpt: The once-unthinkable prospect that Britain could be ripped apart this month with a vote for Scottish independence became bracingly real Monday after the campaign to keep the three-century-old union together was accused of panicking amid polls showing the referendum in a dead heat.

Britain Pledges More Self-Rule for Scots if They Reject Scottish Independence
Excerpt: Shaken by polls showing momentum shifting toward independence for Scotland, the British government will offer proposals for greater political and fiscal autonomy for the Scots if they vote to remain within the United Kingdom in a referendum on Sept. 18, George Osborne, the chancellor of the Exchequer, said on Sunday. (In Greatest Outlander-TV-Series Publicity Stunt of All Time, Scotland Inches Closer to Independence. -- Jim Geraghty, Morning Jolt. http://www.nationalreview.com/newsletters

Worth Reading: Britain on the Brink of a Breakup: Polls suggest Scottish independence is a possibility, which could be a boon for British Tories. By John Fund
Excerpt: Scottish voters are currently much more hostile than the U.K. electorate overall to free markets — Scots view capitalism as the basis for the Thatcher government’s decision to close unprofitable Scottish industries in the 1980s. ... If 59 Labour-party and Scottish National MPs from Scotland leave Westminster, Tories in the current House of Commons would go from being 21 seats short of a majority to having an outright 20-seat majority. “It is unlikely that without Scotland the rest of the United Kingdom would elect a majority Labour government anytime soon,” says Eamonn Butler of the Adam Smith Institute.

The three most important numbers in the new Senate polls. By Aaron Blake
Excerpt: New NBC News/Marist College polls released Sunday in three key Senate races are largely good news for Republicans. The trio of surveys shows Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Rep. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) building leads in some key races that will decide the majority.

Veteran Democrat Faces Hurdles to Re-election
Excerpt: Now, Mr. Tierney, 62, is bracing for another fight for his political life. Roll Call last year listed him as one of the 10 most vulnerable House incumbents, and in an update last month said he “remains vulnerable — in his primary, but more so in his general election.” And this time, he has to jump through two hoops. First, he faces four fellow Democrats, including one particularly strong opponent, in the primary on Tuesday. If Mr. Tierney prevails, he faces the same Republican who nearly beat him in 2012.

NY Black Councilwoman Claims Police Are Going to Exterminate All Blacks
http://lastresistance.com/7185/ny-black-councilwoman-claims-police-going-exterminate-blacks/
Excerpt: “While we believe in peace and reconciliation, as what point do we simply face the facts that AMERIKKKA has no love for the Black Nation and that there is something inherently wrong and that WE have become the race to disseminate and destroy. ... No one can remember the last time an unarmed white person has been killed by police. (You might send her this story: ‘Justice for Dillon Taylor’ sought for white Utah man fatally shot by black officer
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/sep/3/justice-dillon-taylor-after-white-utah-man-fatally/ Excerpt: Taylor, who is white, was reportedly unarmed when he was shot two times near a 7-Eleven on Aug. 11 after a confrontation with police officers.

Gang Of Black Teens Beats White Memphis Grocery Store Employee Into Unconsciousness
Excerpt: Late on Saturday night, a mob of black teens swarmed a Kroger grocery store in MemphisTennessee and proceeded to beat two store employees and one customer to the ground. Police reported they had received a September 6 surveillance video showing the swarm of black teens pushing, punching and kicking the young store employees at the entrance to the store....Two grocery store employees ran to the man's aide, and the black mob attacked them as well, brutally beating all three victims into unconsciousness. (The black female recording the incident on her phone laughs about her fellow blacks beating a white and giggles and cackles and then when a security officer (black) shows up to disperse the crowd (after 3 unconscious whites on the ground) she says, "Somebody call someone." She does not even say "911." --Barb. an argument for concealed carry. ~Bob)

Worth Reading: If White-Privilege Is Real Why Do Asians Do So Well? By David L. Goetsch
Excerpt: However, there are a number of problems with the fundamental premise of white privilege. One problem is that there are so many successful black Americans who have done what successful people of any race do: ... But perhaps the biggest problem with the underlying premise of white privilege is that when applying the socio-economic indicators its purveyors use to justify their arguments, Asian Americans come out on top, not white Americans. (When the government discovered that banks [including black-owned banks!] were giving loans to whites at higher rates than to blacks, they forced the banks to give loans to poor credit risks. This was a big factor in the 2008 housing collapse and recession. But Asians were getting loans at higher rates than whites because--duh--they had better credit ratings as a group. The government did nothing about this clear racial discrimination against whites. ~Bob)

Inadvertently? Government Policies Inadvertently Hurt Black Americans
Excerpt: In an interview with Reason TV, author Jason Riley discusses how government policies, including anti-poverty measures and affirmative action programs, have inadvertently hurt the black population. According to Riley, these policies -- intended to help black Americans -- have only caused economic problems: Minimum wage laws and other anti-poverty programs have priced many workers out of the labor force, explains Riley. And wage laws that make it more expensive for businesses to hire people hurt the less skilled, less experienced workers the most. In the 1940s and 1950s, prior to these policies, the rate of black participation in the labor force was much higher. In fact, the black poverty rate fell by 40 percentage points between 1940 and 1960 before the implementation of these programs.

Letter from Rochester: Another dead cop. Black on white crime. By Colin Flaherty
Excerpt: Didn’t know if you had heard about the murder of a (white) policeman here in Rochester last week by a black man. Daryl Pierson was just 32 years old and just returned to the job on Tuesday after rehabbing for several month from a workplace injury. He leaves a wife, 4 year old son and infant daughter. (I'm so mad about this, I may go to Rochester and loot a store in protest. ~Bob)

Obamacare/Government Healthcare News

ObamaCare's Very, Very Bad Week
Excerpt: It's difficult to imagine a more difficult week for those still clinging to their ObamaCare delusions. It's always hard to guess where a wave begins, but let's start with Sunday. On Sunday, the Washington Postreported that Healthcare.gov had no mechanism for handling enrollment errors. If you find that ObamaCare has made some mistake with your enrollment (for example, saying you have seven instead of six wives), you're asked to fill out a seven-page form and mail it to Kentucky. It arrives in Kentucky, is scanned into a computer, and dies. The Kentucky computer cannot communicate with Healthcare.gov. You're out of luck, sucker.

The Staggering Cost of ObamaCare
Excerpt: Although the total cost of ObamaCare is beyond calculation, it is possible to examine some of the components that contribute to the astronomical – and ultimately budget-busting – total. bama's favorite sleight of hand is to ask the public to focus on health insurance premium costs. He hopes Americans won't notice what his other hand is doing. Although the news on ObamaCare premium costs is certainly bleak, premiums are only the tip of the ObamaCare cost iceberg.

Excerpt: Perhaps we should celebrate this conclusion from Obamacare’s supporters. Previously, some cheered the theory that Obamacare, which expands Medicaid eligibility and heavily subsidizes health insurance for middle income households, would lead people to voluntarily reduce their working hours. In 2010, then Speaker Nancy Pelosi encouraged people who wanted to be musicians, for example, to quit their jobs and focus on their (as yet undiscovered) talents, because taxpayers would underwrite their health coverage. This approach was endorsed in the Congressional Budget Office’s conclusion that Obamacare would reduce employment by 1.5 percent in 2017 and 2.0 percent in 2024 (amounting to 2 million to 2.5 million jobs).

Obama: Illegals Should Not Have To ‘Look Over Their Shoulder
Excerpt: Perhaps signaling that he will soon enact executive actions to ease even more deportations, President Barack Obama said on Friday that illegal immigrants should not have to "look over their shoulder" while in the country illegally. (Neither, then, should other law breakers like drug dealers, gang bangers, rapists, and convenience store strong armed robbers. ~Bob)

Worth Reading: The World Needs a Clarion: Obama can't lead a coalition if nobody can follow his thinking. By Peggy Noonan
Excerpt: It is a muddle, a murk and a desperate-looking thing, the president on the subject of the Islamic State. The Islamic State is the junior varsity. No, it is a “cancer.” We will “degrade and destroy” it. No, we’ll render it “a manageable problem.” It’s all so halting, herky-jerky and, for a great power, embarrassing.

Worth Reading: You Can't Understand ISIS If You Don't Know the History of Wahhabism in Saudi Arabia. By Alastair Crooke
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/alastair-crooke/isis-wahhabism-saudi-arabia_b_5717157.html
Excerpt: The dramatic arrival of Da'ish (ISIS) on the stage of Iraq has shocked many in the West. Many have been perplexed -- and horrified -- by its violence and its evident magnetism for Sunni youth. But more than this, they find Saudi Arabia's ambivalence in the face of this manifestation both troubling and inexplicable, wondering, "Don't the Saudis understand that ISIS threatens them, too?"

Worth Reading: Are the Orcs Winning? By Victor Davis Hanson
Excerpt: J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings was sometimes faulted by literary critics for caricaturing the evil orcs as uniformly bad. ... In the 21st century we are often lectured that such simplistic, one-dimensional evil is long gone. A ubiquitous civilization has so permeated the globe that even the worst sorts must absorb some mitigating popular culture from the Internet, Twitter, and Facebook, as if the sheer speed of transmitting thoughts ensures their moral improvement. Even where democracy is absent, the “world community” and a “global consciousness” are such that billions supposedly won’t let Attila, Tamerlane, and Genghis Khan reappear in our postmodern lives. (Hanson hits it home again, explaining that however much some people want to deny its existence, evil does exist, and sometimes manages to grow into huge forces that commit crimes that boggle the mind. History has plenty of examples, but we only have to look as far as the "Final Solution" of the SS or the Rape of Nanking to see it in action, or not too far at all, with Pol Pot's horrendous practices and mega-scale massacres. Or just what existence is like in North Korea today. It's mindblowing to see the denials of evil by various sources. But there's always been some of that, in every major conflict, and fortunately in the USA there have always been enough realists and patriots to understand and react appropriately. At least, until now. --Del)

Excerpt: In a documentary broadcast August 27th on the Kurdish station STERK TV, captured “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant” (ISIL) elements say the group has been raping men in a ceremony it describes as “marriage” and recording this to use as blackmail and force them to join. SIL uses rape, including gang rape, as a tactic of fear to intimidate populations it seeks to control, according to an August 28th report by the Firat News Agency, a Kurdish agency based in Amsterdam.

#Kurdish (YPG) commander, one of many women (about a third of all Kurdish fighters) bent on to make life hell for #IS. (Pretty woman. God help her if captured by ISIS. But at least she has a strategy. ~Bob)

Where are the marches against the Islamic State? By Yasmine Bahrani
Excerpt: This summer, many Muslims marched in the streets of London, Paris and other cities to condemn the deaths of Gazans at the hands of Israel . ... But, inexplicably, there have been no similarly large-scale demonstrations against the Islamic State for its horrific acts against Christians, Yazidis and even its fellow Muslims in Iraq and Syria. And there certainly haven’t been any marches protesting the beheading of innocents . It’s not hard to organize a march. .. When I asked about the murder of Iraqi civilians by Sunni and Shiite gangs, my fellow Muslims dodged my questions:

ISIS Beheads 2nd Captive Lebanese Soldier
Excerpt: Zeinab Noun said her 20-year-old son, Abbas Medlej, was “sacrificed” after supporters of the militant Sunni group posted images appearing to show a captured Lebanese soldier before and after he was beheaded.

‘Property of US Govt’: Islamic State jihadists armed with US military weapons
Excerpt: Islamic State fighters appear to be using captured US military issue arms and weapons supplied to moderate rebels in Syria by Saudi Arabia, according to a report published on Monday. The study by the London-based small-arms research organisation Conflict Armament Research documented weapons seized by Kurdish forces from militants in Iraq and Syria over a 10-day period in July. The report said the jihadists disposed of “significant quantities” of US-made small arms including M16 assault rifles and included photos showing the markings “Property of US Govt”. (Long time blog readers will recall I was opposed to arming the "moderates." My refrain was, "There are no good guys in Syria." Alas, proved too true. ~Bob)

Another lucky survivor: How One Man Survived an ISIS Massacre
Excerpt: But he really got scared when the pickup trucks that were supposed to take them to nearby Mount Sinjar were instead driven to an irrigation pool at the edge of the village.  “They had gathered us once and they told us to convert to Islam,” he tells me two weeks later in a hospital in the northern Iraqi town of Zakho. “But when we refused, they said there was no problem and we wouldn’t be harmed.” But the militants were lying. (This time it was to wipe out an entire village, all the men killed, all the women to be sold into slavery. And some very smart, highly educated, very considerate people are finding it unsettling that the adjective "evil" has been applied to ISIS. As one columnist asked, if these guys, with their massacres, crucifixions, rapes, slavery policy, and beheadings as joyous sport are not evil, what in the world is? Is the concept of evil so upsetting to you that you just can't bear it and need to be "comfortable" so badly that you find it preferable to hide your head in the sand and just not see the reality of this horror? How can anyone expect Western Civilization to survive if such delicacy continues to spread among our intellectuals and others? Time to wake up and smell the pungent odors of torture and murder. --Del)

Excerpt: As with the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, Western military support for the ousting of former Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi in 2011 was motivated by self-interest. And just with the Iraq invasion, it was done with little concern for prolonged stability in the country or the creation of strong institutions. Now we see the aftereffects of this ill-thought out intervention, with two rival Libyan governments vying for a place at the table, and various militias battling each other across the country.

You have sealed your fate, IS. You backed Obama into a corner, and now he's going to hit you with a speech

An Old Contempt in Rotherham. By Margaret Talbot
Excerpt: What is saddest about the mass sexual exploitation of children in the town of Rotherham, in the North of England, is that it happened at all. But what is most infuriating is that, despite numerous alerts from social workers and at least three independent investigations, the local police and political leadership did so little about it for so long. ... What appears to have been at work is a problematic multiculturalism to which European countries have subscribed too easily.
