I'm Tired--some updates

I’ll be 63 soon. Except for one semester in college when jobs were scarce, and a six-month period when I was between jobs, but job-hunting every day, I’ve worked, hard, since I was 18. Despite some health challenges, I still put in 50-hour weeks, and haven’t called in sick in seven or eight years. I make a good salary, but I didn’t inherit my job or my income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the economy, there’s no retirement in sight, and I’m tired. Very tired.

I’m tired of being told that I have to “spread the wealth around” to people who don’t have my work ethic. I’m tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy or stupid to earn it.

I’m tired of being told that I have to pay more taxes to “keep people in their homes.” Sure, if they lost their jobs or got sick, I’m willing to help. But if they bought McMansions at three times the price of our paid-off, $250,000 condo, on one-third of my salary, then let the leftwing Congresscritters who passed Fannie and Freddie and the Community Reinvestment Act that created the bubble help them—with their own money.

I’m tired of being told how bad America is by leftwing millionaires like Michael Moore, George Soros and Hollywood entertainers who live in luxury because of the opportunities America offers. In thirty years, if they get their way, the United States will have the religious freedom and women’s rights of Saudi Arabia, the economy of Zimbabwe, the freedom of the press of China, the crime and violence of Mexico, the tolerance for Gay people of Iran, and the freedom of speech of Venezuela. Won’t multiculturalism be beautiful?

I’m tired of being told that Islam is a “Religion of Peace,” when every day I can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing their sisters, wives and daughters for their family “honor;” of Muslims rioting over some slight offense; of Muslims murdering Christian and Jews because they aren’t “believers;” of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims stoning teenage rape victims to death for “adultery;” of Muslims mutilating the genitals of little girls; all in the name of Allah, because the Qur’an and Shari’a law tells them to.

I believe “a man should be judged by the content of his character, not by the color of his skin.” I’m tired of being told that “race doesn’t matter” in the post-racial world of President Obama, when it’s all that matters in affirmative action jobs, lower college admission and graduation standards for minorities (harming them the most), government contract set-asides, tolerance for the ghetto culture of violence and fatherless children that hurts minorities more than anyone, and in the appointment of US Senators from Illinois. I think it’s very cool that we have a black president and that a black child is doing her homework at the desk where Lincoln wrote the emancipation proclamation. I just wish the black president was Condi Rice, or someone who believes more in freedom and the individual and less in an all-knowing government.

I’m tired of a news media that thinks Bush’s fundraising and inaugural expenses were obscene, but that think Obama’s, at triple the cost, were wonderful. That thinks Bush exercising daily was a waste of presidential time, but Obama exercising is a great example for the public to control weight and stress, that picked over every line of Bush’s military records, but never demanded that Kerry release his, that slammed Palin with two years as governor for being too inexperienced for VP, but touted Obama with three years as senator as potentially the best president ever.

Wonder why people are dropping their subscriptions or switching to Fox News? Get a clue. I didn’t vote for Bush in 2000, but the media and Kerry drove me to his camp in 2004.

I’m tired of being told that out of “tolerance for other cultures” we must let Saudi Arabia use our oil money to fund mosques and madrassa Islamic schools to preach hate in America, while no American group is allowed to fund a church, synagogue or religious school in Saudi Arabia to teach love and tolerance.

I’m tired of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global warming, which no one is allowed to debate. My wife and I live in a two-bedroom apartment and carpool together five miles to our jobs. We also own a three-bedroom condo where our daughter and granddaughter live. Our carbon footprint is about 5% of Al Gore’s, and if you’re greener than Gore, you’re green enough.

I’m tired of being told that drug addicts have a disease, and I must help support and treat them, and pay for the damage they do. Did a giant germ rush out of a dark alley, grab them, and stuff white powder up their noses while they tried to fight it off? I don’t think Gay people choose to be Gay, but I damn sure think druggies chose to take drugs. And I’m tired of harassment from cool people treating me like a freak when I tell them I never tried marijuana. Update: People have written to tell me I'd have more sympathy if this was close to me. It is exactly having seen the destruction of alcoholism and heroin addiction in my own family that makes me pretty intolerant of people who are willing to destroy the people around them to indulge themselves.
I’m tired of illegal aliens being called “undocumented workers,” especially the ones who aren’t working, but are living on welfare or crime. What’s next? Calling drug dealers, “Undocumented Pharmacists”? And, no, I’m not against Hispanics. Most of them are Catholic and it’s been a few hundred years since Catholics wanted to kill me for my religion. I’m willing to fast track for citizenship any Hispanic person who can speak English, doesn’t have a criminal record and who is self-supporting without family on welfare, or who serves honorably for three years in our military. Those are the citizens we need. Update: A few people have taken this to indicate some bias against Catholics, based on events 400 years ago. While I think they are either too touchy or fail to understand, I was only trying to say that I have zero problem with Catholics wanting to come to the US, but that I have great concerns about Muslims, as a good % of them do want to kill me, or force their religion and moral code on me.

I’m tired of latte liberals and journalists, who would never wear the uniform of the Republic themselves, or let their entitlement-handicapped kids near a recruiting station, trashing our military. They and their kids can sit at home, never having to make split-second decisions under life and death circumstances, and bad mouth better people than themselves. Do bad things happen in war? You bet. Do our troops sometimes misbehave? Sure. Does this compare with the atrocities that were the policy of our enemies for the last fifty years—and still are? Not even close. So here’s the deal. I’ll let myself be subjected to all the humiliation and abuse that was heaped on terrorists at Abu Ghraib or Gitmo, and the critics can let themselves be subject to captivity by the Muslims who tortured and beheaded Daniel Pearl in Pakistan, or the Muslims who tortured and murdered Marine Lt. Col. William Higgins in Lebanon, or the Muslims who ran the blood-spattered Al Qaeda torture rooms our troops found in Iraq, or the Muslims who cut off the heads of schoolgirls in Indonesia, because the girls were Christian. Then we’ll compare notes. British and American soldiers are the only troops in history that civilians came to for help and handouts, instead of hiding from in fear. UPDATE: It has rightly been pointed out to me, several times, that I should have included Canadian, Australian and New Zealand troops here. My apologies for slighting these gallant allies of freedom.

I’m tired of people telling me that their party has a corner on virtue and the other party has a corner on corruption. Read the papers—bums are bi-partisan. And I’m tired of people telling me we need bi-partisanship. I live in Illinois, where the “Illinois Combine” of Democrats and Republicans has worked together harmoniously to loot the public for years. And I notice that the tax cheats in Obama’s cabinet are bi-partisan as well.

I’m tired of hearing wealthy athletes, entertainers and politicians of both parties talking about innocent mistakes, stupid mistakes or youthful mistakes, when we all know they think their only mistake was getting caught. I’m tired of people with a sense of entitlement, rich or poor.

Speaking of poor, I’m tired of hearing people with air-conditioned homes, color TVs and two cars called poor. The majority of Americans didn’t have that in 1970, but we didn’t know we were “poor.” The poverty pimps have to keep changing the definition of poor to keep the dollars flowing.

I’m real tired of people who don’t take responsibility for their lives and actions. I’m tired of hearing them blame the government, or discrimination, or big-whatever for their problems.

Yes, I’m damn tired. But I’m also glad to be 63. Because, mostly, I’m not going to get to see the world these people are making. I’m just sorry for my granddaughter.

Robert A. Hall is a Marine Vietnam veteran who served five terms in the Massachusetts state senate. He blogs at www.tartanmarine.blogspot.com Update: Someone attached a picture of Robert D. Hall, an actor, to some versions and forwarded it on, saying that I was on CSI. We are two different people, and I am not an actor--unless you count running for public office.

And to the folks who said I'm Old and should die and get out of the way, I have IPF, so will comply soon enough.

  1. I'm tired of getting emails I don't ask for!

I'm tired of Republicans complaining about the state of the US, when they had 8 long years to get it right. Great job guys!

I'm tired of listening to people complaining about being tired.

No single person (or party) created the dilemma we're in now. Greedy CEO's, pork barrel spending, and Presidents who sent OUR jobs out of OUR country, help create this mess.

Repugs love to go after Dems on Fannie and Freddy. I'm tired of hearing about it. You don't tell the whole story, only the parts that are convenient to your cause.

I'm tired of Republicans blaming everything on Freddy and Fannie. No single one thing caused the state of the economy today!

My God, stop watching Fox TV and being brainwashed. Its the MOST biased news on the air. If you can't see that, then you need to re-check your face. Yes, you do have a nose!

I am a Democrat and my father was too. If he were alive, he would be very sad at the state of the world today, God rest his soul. My dad was one of the founding fathers of the UNC Dental School in Chapel Hill, NC. He ran the free clinic for many years and refused to take pay raises when other doctors were. He never complained about how tired he was. His name was Grover C Hunter. Yes, check him out. He was a genius and a very good man. But my God, (gasp), he was a Democrat and taught me to be one too.

He too work tirelessly but always stuck to his Democratic views. He never told us how tired he was, except upon his death.

He taught me that even when you don't have money to give, that you should still give what you can from your heart. This is what the Bible teaches us. Its called the Law of Reciprocity! Watch Pat Robertson sometime. I'm sure the show will fit well with your republican views!

No, you don't have to give it all, and I certainly don't want to support illegal immigrants, people who don't work, and lazy people who are only looking for handouts. But how do you remove the bad apples from the good apples?

Someone figure that one out and you'll have the key!

As the single mother of a mentally retarded child, I take offense to whiners. I have never asked for handouts and I've struggled hard for over 18 years. I never had any help from the government (or gotten child support) for my son because I was told I couldn't own anything to give him the help he so desperately needed. I have sacrificed my whole life for my son, and will keep doing so. I eat very little most weeks so I can feed him and the animals I've saved. People ask me why I'm thin but I don't tell them truthfully. I never complain or ask for handouts! I've never asked for your help yet you've never offered it either. Still, when I have extra, I give it instead of keeping it for myself.

In fact, I am an avid animal lover and am always feeding strays that other people dump at the end of our road. I am the poor house on the rich road. Do you think my neighbors, who have money pitch in and help? No. Do I complain. No.

So don't clump all Democrats together as bad people. We are good people who have seen a decline in our party as well! I love Barack Obama and I love what he stands for. How far our country has come! I pray for him just as much as I prayed for President Bush. God commands us to do this too! Obama didn't cause this mess. He is doing his best to clean up the mess in every way he can. He didn't start a war with a country that didn't cause 9/11! He isn't responsible for the over 4000 troops that have died there so far. Stop whining!

If you've got something to complain about, contact your Congressmen!

Politics in BOTH parties have changed over the years. Thank God we've still got our values, ethics, and morals!

I am proud to be an American and I am proud to be a Democrat.

  2. I completely agree with everything you've said. I'm tired and I'm only 35. I worry about the world my daughters (3 1/2 & 1 1/2) will be inheriting from us:(

  3. Mr. Hall,

I received a copy of this blog in my e-mail and will be sending it on to friends. You write eloquently and it surprises me that so many of us feel the same way. To watch the news, none of us exist.

I believe that there are many of us, as Corinne had previously said, that would like to know what to do next, besides complain.

What are some of the positive things that we can do?

My children are young, Mr. Hall. In grade school. I am a stay at home mother and my husband works long hours so that I can. For years I have relied on hand-me-downs. When I wanted a new entertainment center, I waited and waited until I found one that I both liked and could afford. Same with furniture. Same with the house.

I waited and paid for things with cash or paid it off the next month. Have I kept up with the Joneses? No, but we're just fine. I pray that my kids will be able to live like this too.

I appreciate your words and your passion. I am just wondering what we can do next.

  5. Like you, I'm tired too and have worked hard like you and value hard work like you though I disagree with many of your points. I believe we have to build a new world with new ideas and new supports. . .I like Obama and his leadership.

I also think that people like you and me need to find some peace - we've worked hard, we've done a good job so it's okay to let others take the helm while we find a meaningful, peaceful routine of doing a "good enough" job after all these years of hard work.

    I wish you well.

  6. So sad Mr. Parsons, there are good and bad people of all races, religions, and cultures. You could have been born into a family in the midst of war or as a child of a homeless mother or into a religion that faces ridicule and prejudice. Your hatred can sow dangerous seeds in our world - I pray that you will use your energy for solutions and positive acts. In my multiracial, multireligious, multicultural classroom, some of the most hard working, caring, and respectful children are those who are Muslim. I hope you will begin to read and research more to understand the truth.

  7. WE'RE ALL TIRED.
I'm not 63, but I'm no spring chicken. And guess what? I'm tired, too.

I'm tired of people who have lived a life of privilege, of never knowing true hardship, of being so blessed that they never had to take a day off work for the past seven years, of having the physical and mental blessings to be able to find a job and keep it, of being just damned lucky that the company they got a job in didn't shut down and leave them penniless after 35 years on the job...

I'm tired of these people believing that their purpose in life is to be happy and comfortable and not give a shit about those less fortunate, for whatever reason. Some people are born with physical problems that keep them in and out of hospitals all their lives. Should we not help these people? They sometimes don't "work".

If you have been blessed enough to grow up in a nice home with two loving parents, go to college, find a great job, have decent health, and work all the way to age 63 then good for you. You have lived the American dream. But to many, many people, this is only a dream. An impossible dream.

I'm tired of these blessed people believing that it is not their purpose in life to share the blessings they have with those who have not been so blessed, those less fortunate souls who grew up in homes without two stable parents with two stable jobs, whose parents may have never given them any attention unless it was to beat them, of those whose hearts have been so hardened by the cruelty and meanness of people that when they finally do get a chance to make something of themselves, all they hear is "I want to hire someone without a record" and will never give them a chance.

I'm tired of people who refuse to understand those who are not just like themselves, who believe that everyone should think like them, look like them, believe like them, and have the same standards and morals as they do--what a boring and simple world this would be! If the world were meant to be such a simple place, there would be one kind of land animal, one kind of plant, and one fish in the sea. And even that much diversity would be stretching it. But the world is meant to be a complex place rich with diversity where we can all learn from one another.

I'm tired of people bitching that others need help. Fine. You don't want to make sacrifices for others, then board up all your windows, lock all your doors, stay inside in your little warm home and don't help. No one wants help from you anyway. There are plenty of Americans out there who know they are blessed and are willing to lend a hand, and stretch it out to those in need, even those why may not deserve it.

Frankly, I'm tired of pious religious people who talk about how wonderful and loving they are out of one side of their mouths and then, out of the other side, spout bigotry, hatred, and misunderstanding for those who are different. God loved everyone, not just those who loved him. Even Jesus said it was easy to give your life for a good man, but who would give his life for someone who is not so good? Answer: Jesus did. We are to be like Jesus. You can't take your cushy little life with you, but you can take the love you show others and it will bring you blessings sevenfold.

Many die soon after age 63 and wish they had done more to help, had given more, had been less stingy with what they had. I have never heard of a single soul who, on their death bed, wished they had more stuff, wish they had helped others less and had been more selfish. Yes, we may have worked for what we have. yes, there are those who maybe have not worked. But it is not our job to judge others. We are to care for those less fortunate than ourselves, care for those in prison, feed the hungry and not ask why they are hungry, and give from the heart. For as we do to the least of these, we do to Him.

And guess what? If you stop spending so much time complaining about how bad the world is and how bad the world might be for your grandchildren and instead spend your energies helping others, you will find energy you never knew you had. Giving to others--even those who don't deserve it--will invigorate you body and soul. Instead of complaining that the world is not a good place, be a part of making it a better one. And then you won't be tired any more.

Mr. Hall, I am a Vietnam veteran and I don't talk about it. That's what "duty" is. While I am very much tired of the collapse of the USA, I don't particularly think that military vets and retirees have a calling to sit around and bitch about it. Most of you didn't start griping until the political majority wind changed after 8 years. My advice to all of you: stop voting for thieves and liars. Get them ALL out, every one, and chase down the biggest thieves and hang them from the nearest tree. Stop talking and start doing. I'm 60, and age slows me down, but doesn't stop me. Stop "don'ting" and start doing."

    (reply)

Unfortunately, an all too simplistic approach. Wish it worked that way, however, when a person who drove his car off a bridge, who fled the scene leaving a young woman to drown, can repeatedly be re-elected ad nauseum; when a certain mayor can be caught on camera smoking crack with a prostitute and still get re-elected to office; when a certain Congressman can shrug off the fact that his townhome is being used as a gay brothel, and then rebuke "the other party" for their concern regarding lack of oversight regarding Fanny & Freddy, and still get re-elected in landslides....what does one do? Unfortunately, the majority of the voters were so, ah...unenamored with GWB that they would have elected Bugs Bunny if he'd run. The bumper sticker that reads, "1.5 million attended the inauguration and only 14 missed work" might be a bit of a stretch...but it still tells the story. While others are celibrating, protesting, whatever, us with a work ethic are, well, working.

  11. As a fellow vet: welcome home, sir, and thank you for your service to our country.

    As a fellow citizen:

I'm tired of sore losers and whiners. Neither the world, nor this country that we share with so many different types of people, is going to Hell in a handbasket just because the White House has a black in it and the military has gay Farsi interpreters.

Who am I to disagree with your windy rant? Just some middle-aged white guy who's tired of "Last Angry White Man" vitriol. Just a guy who quietly served in the cold war army when it was mighty unfashionable, then rejoined at 40 to deploy to Iraq -- leading a team of young guys who know more about honorable service than they do about sniveling and blame-casting. Make no mistake about it, Tired Marine: they are America's new Greatest Generation. I place my faith in them as citizens and men.

Just a guy who works all week long, then works on our cheap little house evenings and weekends. It's not much, but we have a responsible mortgage payment, and we're NOT too tired to keep working on our dreams. Sorry for you, Molly Marine, that you can't hump it anymore at 63. Some go longer than others.

My retired fighter pilot dad's still working, too -- at 76. If he's not too tired, why are you? "Onward and upward" is his motto. I suggest you consider adopting it, as it would honor your Corps far better than your whinging screeds over the web.

The gays, blacks, muslims and college students aren't out to steal our stuff, dude. They want equal enfranchisement in an egalitarian society. Like, say, the society outlined by our founding fathers.

I welcome their efforts to participate alongside the rest of us -- and when (not if) they do succeed, I pray they don't try to slam the gate behind them as you're trying so hard to do -- as if this is somehow more YOUR country than theirs. They're earning every bit of ground they gain.

America IS (not was) the land of opportunity. If you truly believe that it's a zero-sum game in this country, please re-visit grammar school civics and high school U.S. history.

Anyway, who are you to rave about the heedless youth of today, Mr. Hall? A blogger who insists on blaming the current political generation for your own encroaching political impotence. Please get over your spittle-flecked Old Guy rants before your kids take away the keyboard as well as your car keys.

You were in government "service" for ten years, sir. That makes you a larger part of any current problems than most. A legislator is just another nosy agitator who sold his soul to turn pro -- or do you maintain different standards for yourself than for the current crop of lawmakers?

Still, I refuse to be jaded, either by politics or by culture. You don't have to be jaded, either. The fact that the opposition ran on a ticket of hope doesn't mean that you need to abandon yours.

As for me and my multicultural, gender-blended, semi-disabled (but still hard working) little family, our Obama/Biden yard sign -- honorably discharged after its election tour -- now hangs in my shop where it will maintain pride of place for many years beyond the President's term of service. Because ya know what? I'm sick and damn tired of the very people who crapped in every corner of the room blaming the cleaning crew.

Good luck to you, Old Jarhead. I hope you get your energy back soon. Please remember that while griping may make you feel better, it doesn't accomplish much.

Lead, follow or get out of the way.

  14. Thank you for putting Patriotic loyal American feelings into words for us. As an old person I have tried for a long time to stay current, share information, and help turn this Titanic around. There are many things the mostly home bound elderly can manage to do using telephones, computers...pen..paper and stamps.
Should American citizens march for our republic I will help feed them, house them and provide comfort. Personally if I were younger I would have started marching when it became apparent that a lying x-drug user trained by foreign schools, lacking Christian principals was winning a popularity contest that would disgrace us for a long time and cause our descendants to curse us for not doing enough to stop this ruinous charade.

  15. Bob--thanks so much for saying that--it needed to be said!! I've lost track of you over the years but you should know that you played an important role in my "civic life". In 1972, I was voting for the very first time and so very excited about it! I ran up the stairs of the Town Hall on Election Day in Clinton leaving behind my Dad (Gene) and my Godfather (Mike). Your opponent at the time was at the top stair with a local croany--of course, they didn't even look my way (I looked too young to vote anyway!) and the local fellow whispered to your opponent, "Gene and Mike" as the guys behind me approached. Mr. Ward(?)stuck out his hand and said, "Hi Gene, Hi Mike--hope you'll vote for me today". Gene and Mike seemed to be somewhat impressed that this lad knew their names. You on the other hand were standing on the steps at the other entrance to the building, by yourself in fact. I have hated "big machine" politics (even in a small town) since then and always will. You did an outstanding job as a representative of the people--and it appears from this blog that you're STILL representing the people of this great nation!

  18. I'm 32 years old, nearly half your age, and I find your writing to be some of the most wonderful expression to ever greet my eyes. It expresses everything that I feel in my young life. I too, am indeed tired. It isn't a complaint, as I read many people put it, but more in the vein of "this NEEDS to change" Truly that is the best way I can put it, but I assure you, I get it. By the way sir, thank you for your service to our country. I don't believe that our military get thanked, or are shown the appreciation they deserve. I'd love to see all those who criticize you go out and do what you do, simply for love of your country and fellow man. I salute you. I have a good friend of mine who is right now in Afghanistan, in the city of Kandahar. He is a veteran of Iraq, Fallujah to be precise. His name is Xavier, please pray for him. He will (God-willing)be home by th end of the year. Hopefully Obama doesn't have other plans for him.

I just appreciate this writing so much, I can't even describe how thoroughly on point and wonderful it made me feel to see someone who sees the world like I do and isn't afraid to say it. You are to be commended. May God bless you and your family.

  19. Almost every one I talk to has been creamed by the economy. A lot of people have lost their jobs and their life savings, medical insurance and houses..

Tomorrow I am taking a good friend to Southwestern medical school to to see a neurosurgeon to get a third opinion about surgery he may or may not survive. He has been in excruciating pain for years and I can tell. He works about 12 hours a day, sometimes more. I never heard him whine like this guy.

Most days I go by and visit a good friend of my parents' wife who is dying in a convalescent home near me after several strokes. His daughter died an excruciating death from cancer in November leaving two teenagers and a husband. Rising from nothing he is a self-made multi-millionaire who is watching the wealth he killed himself for years to make disappear at the end of his life. I never hear a peep of complaint. Never a complaint about the millions in taxes he has paid going to lazy welfare recipients, never a complaint about anything.

The other day a stockbroker I worked with told me his wife's friend's millionaire husband went broke, skipped out and left her penniless with a young child. They didn't even have food. They were trying to get her food stamps but didn't know how.

I could go on, one of my brothers-in-law hasn't had a job in over a year and....

Then comes this guy whining, crying in his beer who:

-has never had a serious bout of unemployment

    -makes a good salary

-seems to complain about 'only' having a $250,000 condominium

-has been working since he was 18 - I had a paper route I got up for at 4 AM from the time I was 8. I didn't think it was something to complain about, I thought it was great to make $20 a week.

-This guy is tired and works 50 hours a week? I'm 59 and during the past week I got about the equivalent of one night's sleep because I was working 20 hours a day on a project with screwed computer files doing the kind of work I would never have accepted a year ago I hate it so much. I have been working 50 hours in about 3 days and am taking a break to write this at 1:15AM. For my father, a doctor, working 50 hours a week was called a vacation. Some how I am thrilled to be sleep deprived from having so much work there is no time for sleep when so many have none.

You have hit a raw nerve. My pet peeve is privileged people who complain about their unhappiness and blame it on others. Blame it on the 'government', the Mexicans, the liberals, the muslims, blacks, whoever. Any one but taking responsibility themselves.

This guy says he never tried drugs. Maybe he should. Maybe anti-depressants.

I thank God I was raised in an environment where whining and complaining was not allowed and taking personal responsibility was not a politician's slogan. And feel fortunate to still be surrounded by people who don't whine.

Keep a distance from people like the author of this screed. They will bring you down and waste your time. This kind of self-pity is particularly unbecoming and uncharacteristic coming from a marine, if that is indeed the case.

Oh, and I know a lot of people who live in 'McMansions' and they all worked their rear ends off to get them.

  25. I'm tired of my money being funnelled to big corporations and multi-millionaires. They are approximately 20% of the population, but they own about 80% of the wealth in the US. Meanwhile, approximately 80% of the population gets the other 20% of the wealth in the US. I know that I, and pretty much everyone I know is in the 80% that only has 20% of the wealth. Spreading the wealth that the top 20% of the population has is fine by me, they can afford it. They should be paying 80% of the taxes if they have 80% of the money as far as I'm concerned, but last I heard, they pay about 60% of the taxes. I work hard, I'm neither lazy nor stupid, and neither are most of the other people I know who are in that big old 80% of the population who only have 20% of the wealth.

I'm tired of the value of my property going down because there are so many foreclosures. As far as I can tell, there seem to be a lot of rules to the program to keep people in their homes to keep out scammers and people who were deceitful about what they could really afford. And since taxes are not going up for families who earn under $250K, which covers me and nearly everyone I know, I'm cool with the tax hike for the over $250K lot.

I'm tired of bizarro connections made between Hollywood and how everything will go to hell if they get their way. The gays are big in Hollywood and yet if Hollywood gets it's way, we will end up with a tolerance for gays equal to Iran? That makes no sense. Hollywood puts out an increasing amount of movie and TV shows with women in positions of power, doing the same jobs as a well as men do them, and generally living as equals to men. Yet if Hollywood gets it way, we will end up with women's rights equal to Saudi Arabia? Again, makes no sense.

And I'm just tired of Michael Moore, he's a tool.

Using the same yardstick for Christianity as for Islam, it only seems to be "Christians" who bomb abortion clinics and make death lists of doctors who perform abortions. By this yardstick, Christianity is not a religion of peace either. The troubles in Ireland were turned into a Protestant vs Catholic conflict where both sides killed many, many people. By this yardstick, Christianity is not a religion of peace either. The Isralis have gone far beyond tit for tat in Gaza and are progressing towards "let's just wipe them out". By this yardstick, Judaism is not a religion of peace. Female genital mutilation is practiced by Coptic Christians of Egypt, Christian groups in Kenya, and even the Falasha Jews of Ethiopia. Religion is used as justification by all kinds of wingnuts to justify the hatred they spew and the wrongs they do. The problem is the wingnuts and the cultures, not the religions.

I'm just tired of Bush and I'm so glad he's gone. He took more vacation days than any other president in our history. We'll see how Obama measures up after a year. Kerry was swiftboated. Palin is a tool who couldn't answer questions off the cuff w/o sounding stupid (really, being able to see Russia gives you foreign policy experience?). Obama can actually answers questions off the cuff thoughtfully and intelligently.

No, I don't wonder why people are switching to Fox News. They are bitter, bigoted, and scared of the new world. We are a world power on the decline. Worldwide, affluent white Anglo-Europeans are the minority and it's only a matter of time before that catches up with us.

I'm tired of people thinking that Freedom of religion really means Freedom of Christianity. Freedom of religion means all religions get to be here. If you don't like it, lobby to have the constitution changed, you'd just better hope they pick your religion. They don't have freedom of religion in Saudi Arabia, that's why people can't go there and build churches and whatnot. I guess we could invade them next and make them adopt freedom of religion. They have their laws and we have ours. And there are plenty of Christian groups who are definitely not teaching tolerance.

I'm tired of people who don't really give a shit about global warming. It's real, get over it and do you part, and stop whining about it. Al Gore should lower his carbon footprint just like you should. Just because others are being tools about lowering their carbon footprints doesn't mean you should be a tool too.

I don't know if drug addiction is a disease or not, but I do know it's something people lose control of. Nicotine is addictive, but legal. I have watched my uncle struggle for over two years to stop smoking. He got very sick and ended up in the hospital last year because his compromised respiratory system couldn't handle the cold he caught. It really scared him and he thought he'd never smoke again after that. He is now struggling to stop smoking again. I have and will continue to do anything I can to help him stop smoking no matter how many tries it takes on his part. He chose to smoke, but he didn't choose to be an addict.

I'm tired of people defending horrible acts that our military commits on rare occasions. We are supposed to be the good guys, act like it. Just because the bad guys do things 1000 times worse and 100 times more often doesn't make it OK for the good guys to do something horrible once in a while.

I'm tired of getting vitriolic, distorted, hate spewing emails from Republicans. I don't get that kind of stuff from Democrats.

I'm tired of people with holier-than-thou attitudes.

I'm tired of people who are quite comfortable and don't think that they have any responsibility to help people.

Yep, I'm tired too. But I'm glad to be young enough to help build a new world and I'm just sorry you won't be around to see it.

  31. Mr. Hall, great post!

Can't say as much for some of those who are responding to you. Often they call you "stupid" or "misguided." What a gutless ad hominem tactic; certainly it doesn't support their positions.

What people these days need is to sit down and talk about their differences. I'd live to have a round table with all your detractors here because, even at 27, I could show them hard, factual evidence contrary to most of what they've posted. Of course, those who resort to personal attacks like many of them can be called on their typical hypocrisy--simplistic retorts, prejudiced stereotyping, little actual evidence to back up anything they say. Just listen to them: you listen to that evil Fox News; you're a typical bigoted rich white man of the rich white man's party; it's your fault we're in this mess (because you belong to a certain class); you're an anti-Muslim bigot and homophobe; you're a vile soldier like all of our military who kill innocent people for fun...and on and on with the malice and the same tired old false accusations.

Alas that too many claims have been made to respond to in such a poor forum for discussion. Still, pointing out the weakness of most of your detractors via highlighting their pathetic resort to ad hominem logical fallacies might be helpful to some--hopefully those guilty of it will see and correct their errors. Just as I don't hope much in the socialist state we're rapidly becoming, I can't find much _hope_ that these people will _change,_ either.

Isn't it interesting that Obama, the savior so many still fawn over, the man who was supposed to be a "uniter," has taken such actions as to cause a further and much deeper polarization of America, even among some of his own party?

    LETTER:

retirement in sight, and I'm tired -very tired.
DAR
Gee, I wonder who did this to your economy?
I'm tired of being told that I have to "spread the wealth around" to people
who don't have my work ethic.
DAR
Republicans really ought to stop being dishonest about this comment. It was made to "Joe the Plumber" a fellow who knows a little about getting some of the wealth spread to him since he has been on welfare, twice. I understand the comment to mean, this nation has a lot of wealth and we can have a tax system that tends to make a few people very very rich and a lot of people poor, or we can have a more fair progressive system which allows a large middle class to thrive, thus allowing the wealth to be spread around rather than just accumulate at the very top. McCain distorted and threw this comment around countless times during the debates and the American just didn't buy it. It's a dud.
I'm tired of being told the government will
take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too
lazy or stupid to earn it..
DAR
Republican heroes and icons like Joe the Plumber are "lazy or stupid?" Okay. I see your point.
In thirty years, if they get
their way, the United States will have the religious freedom and women's
    rights of Saudi Arabia,...
DAR
Really? Is that the way it's trending? I love it when rightwingers pretend like they care about religious freedom or civil rights. If you have a problem with religious discrimination in the country, you know who stands up and goes to bat for you? The ACLU. Does anyone wonder if this gasbag is a member of the ACLU? Right. And in "thirty years" single women won't be allowed to be seen in public with men, won't be allowed to drive cars and will be wearing burkas.
I enjoy a good rant, but this is just stupid, then it gets worse.
...the economy of Zimbabwe,
DAR
As I am constantly advising dim bulbs who think they can be funny without any training or forethought, if you are going to try to be humorous you have to start with a grain of truth and build on it. Consider:

    Wiki:
"The economy of Zimbabwe is collapsing under the weight of economic mismanagement, resulting in 94% unemployment[2] and spiraling hyperinflation... Inflation has surpassed that of all other nations at over 80 sextillion(1021)%. It currently has the lowest GDP real growth rate in an independent country..."

    Their GDP = $1.9 billion.

Arkansas GDP (a poor state ranking 48th by state)= $78 billion.

Now, George Bush may have set us in the general direction of Zimbabwe but you can see we have a long way to go. Hell, Arkansas has a long way to go. The hope is that Obama (praise be his name) will help turn this around.
the freedom of the press of China,
DAR
Really? Is this an issue? Has someone been squelching the freedom of the press in the US? If so, who is standing up for protecting it? Rightwingers? Now you are being funny.
the crime and violence of Mexico,...
DAR
Actually, we assist in that regard. Something like 90% of the assault rifles being used by gangs in Mexico are coming from US gun dealers just across the border.
the tolerance for Gay people of Iran,
DAR
Now this is a curious one. I think he surely made a boo here. The tolerance for gay people in Iran is near zero. They kill them. In the US and around the world tolerance is rising, getting better. And which political side has been for increasing tolerance and which has been fighting it tooth and nail?
I just wish the black president was Condi Rice,
DAR
Well you should have tried her. Obama would have kicked her ass too. Maybe after a few years she will be able to wash the Bush off of her reputation and have a life again.
I'm tired of a news media that thinks Bush's fundraising and inaugural
expenses were obscene, but that think Obama's, at triple the cost, were
    wonderful.
DAR
This is why I like to take the time to roast boneheads. I almost always learn something. Observe:

"The cost of Obama's inauguration, minus the security costs? Approximately $45 million."

The amount spent on George Bush's inauguration in 2005? $42.3million

The amount spent on Bill Clinton's in 1993? $33 million.

Here's how the lie worked. They compared apples to oranges and didn't figure in Bush's security costs. Unbelievably stupid.

"However, buried in a recent New York Times article published one week before the controversy erupted over the cost of Obama's inauguration, the newspaper reported that in 2005, "the federal government and the District of Columbia spent a combined $115.5 million, most of it for security, the swearing-in ceremony, cleanup and for a holiday for federal workers" [emphasis added].

You read that correctly. The federal government spent $115 million dollars for the 2005 inauguration. Keep in mind, that $115 million price tag was separate from the money Bush backers bundled to put on the inauguration festivities. For that, they raised $42 million. So the bottom line for Bush's 2005 inauguration, including the cost of security? That's right, $157 million."

"In fairness, Bush has been candid about why he enlisted in the Air National Guard. Like many young men of his generation, he wanted to avoid Vietnam. He told one reporter, "I was not prepared to shoot my eardrum out with a shotgun in order to get a deferment. Nor was I willing to go to Canada. So I chose to better myself by learning how to fly airplanes." --MSNBC
Get a clue. I didn't vote for Bush in 2000,...
I'm tired of being told that out of "tolerance for other cultures" we must
let Saudi Arabia use our oil money to fund mosques and madrassa Islamic
schools to preach hate in America,
DAR
And just a minute ago you were for "freedom of religion." Where is there a "madrassa" in America? Hey, if you want the Arabs to have less of your oil money, you could always tell your republican friends to sell the Hummer and buy a Prius.
DAR
Why would you compare us to "our enemies?" That's the standard we should go by? Why not our peers? You know, NATO countries. You have to set the standard at the level of the "terrorists" to make us look good? That should tell you something about the problem right there.
You do not need to be in your 60’s, 50’s or served in the Armed Forces to realize that the moral guidelines ,respect and the treatment of others as you would like to be treated that has been the forefront of generations of Americans is headed to hell in a hand basket.
Not having served in the Armed Forces instead the fire service, our families have provided 11 members representing every branch of the Armed Services. Fair to say we are a God fearing, give unto others, and kick ass family that respects our Commander and Chief.

I'm tire and so wish we could get our government to help bring our country back to what it was. I have no problem with others wanting to live here because of OUR freedoms and OUR values. So why do they think they need to instill what they are running from on OUR country??? That, I will never understand.

I've had these same sentiments since before I was out of high school where the attitude and "what's cool" made me want to vomit. America may not end up a great country, but I'll make damn sure I have a great life that I forged myself, with help from the people I respected growing up. I do 11 hr days at work and heap night stuff on top sometimes. I wanted to take some action when I didn't receive any financial aid whatsoever because I lived on my own, made $12 an hour and was the son of an electrical engineer. But you know what? That makes me a dedicated earnest young man. I have actual want to become an electronic engineer. I don't want to obtain a degree because it was cheap and easy. The fact I have to sacrifice everything comfortable for this makes me a better student. In the future, I won't be the guy asking questions trying to keep afloat... I'll be the man with answers and a love for what I produce. In the end I'll be the man who lived.

AN OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT OBAMA
Dear President Obama, You are the thirteenth President under whom I have lived and unlike any of the others, you truly scare me. You scare me because after months of exposure, I know nothing about you. You scare me because I do not know how you paid for your expensive Ivy League education and your upscale lifestyle and housing with no visible signs of support. You scare me because you did not spend the formative years of youth growing up in America and culturally you are not an American. You scare me because you have never run a company or met a payroll. You scare me because you have never had military experience, thus don't understand it at its core. You scare me because you lack humility and 'class', always blaming others. You scare me because for over half your life you have aligned yourself with radical extremists who hate America and you refuse to publicly denounce these radicals who wish to see America fail. You scare me because you are a cheerleader for the 'blame America' crowd and deliver this message abroad. You scare me because you want to change America to a European style country where the government sector dominates instead of the private sector. You scare me because you want to replace our health care system with a government controlled one. You scare me because you prefer 'wind mills' to responsibly capitalizing on our own vast oil, coal and shale reserves. You scare me because you want to kill the American capitalist goose that lays the golden egg which provides the highest standard of living in the world. You scare me because you have begun to use 'extortion' tactics against certain banks and corporations. You scare me because your own political party shrinks from challenging you on your wild and irresponsible spending proposals. You scare me because you will not openly listen to or even consider opposing points of view from intelligent people. You scare me because you falsely believe that you are both omnipotent and omniscient. You scare me because the media gives you a free pass on everything you do. You scare me because you demonize and want to silence the Limbaughs, Hannitys, O'Relllys and Becks who offer opposing, conservative points of view. You scare me because you prefer controlling over governing. Finally, you scare me because if you serve a second term I will probably not feel safe in writing a similar letter in 8 years. 47. I couldn't agree with you more. I'm 36. Yes, I hear the groans about how could such a youngster even dare say she's tired?!! But I am. I was raised with a work ethic, belief in God & Country. My generation & the next are entitled & spoiled. Gen Y has been told, "you're so special" since birth. I'm tired of their parents abusing their children by telling them how "special" they are before they have instilled values and a work ethic in them. I'm tired of every kid being praised for "trying." In the real world there isn't 21st place. Winning means something. Those who get to 1st place should be able to relish in it.. not have to graciously stand among all the "losers" who got a medal just for playing. I'm tired of this I want it "right now" mindset. Tired of Obama spreading my wealth when I struggle to create jobs, pay my bills on time & be a responsible, contributing member of society. Tired of people who have no sense of responsibility. Tired of the "I don't owe the debt I incurred bail me out" mentality. Tired of politicians with self serving agendas, lack fortitude, character, integrity or honesty. Our founding Fathers would be appalled. Tired of the banks & wall street raping and pilaging innocent citizens while our government just keeps making it easier for them to rake in billions as I look at my 8 year old daughter and hope I can make the house payment. I'm tired of people squirming to avoid having "skin in the game." I'm tired of being pressured to accept everyone and everything even when some things are just plain morally wrong (and no I'm not talking about anyone's race or sexual orientation). Our newfound drive to be "politically correct" is robbing our society of a much needed smack in the face called a reality check. "Put your name to it" no longer exists. A contract is only binding if you "feel" like it, otherwise, your favorite lawyer can get out of it. Tired of our education system (and parents) turning out a generation of MORONS with ZERO work ethic. Seriously! Have you been to any retail store lately? The product of our education system is an employee who can barely figure out how to slide the bar code across the scanner! Meanwhile, China and Japan are investing BILLIONS in their next generations. How will we compete in the competitve global economy? I am tired of California. The 7th largest economy in the world is issuing IOU's???? Get over yourselves liberal California - no you can't afford to study the blue bellied frog, or your artsy centers in the name of culture or the endless eco friendly studies that tell us what we already know. Get over yourselves and learn some discpline. One word - NO. No - we won't bail you out, No we won't study the blue bellied frog because we have priorities. First and foremost we have a generation who needs massive education and disclipline so they can become exceptionally educated, contributing members of society. We must demand fiscal responsibility and cut the CRAP out of our budgets and focuse on what is important. Education, roads, health care, military. Government was NEVER intended to save us all. We must work hard, be responsible, honest, fight for our country. We must ELEVATE - not create infrastructure to appease the lowest common denominator. We must help those who cannot help themselves but we must not create a culture that encourages being void of self sufficiency. Otherwise, we risk it all. Our freedom, our land of opportunity, our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness will all slip right into the hands of someone else. To all the vets out there - this 36 year old Mother of two is grateful to you. I know exactly what you fought for and I appreciate every soldier out there who not only fought in the past but fights today to preserve the freedoms we have.

  48. Found your blog entry in my email yesterday. It sums up my feelings almost exactly. I'm 65 and can see the handwriting on the wall. My children and grandchildren face the prospect of living in a socialist state. With the election of Obama, this nation took a major step towards complete socialism. It sickens me having spent my entire adult life in the service of my country essentially fighting/working against the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and communism in general.

I willo visit your blog regularly. You state what the left wingers in this country are too dumb and blind to see.

Thank you for your service to our country.

  49. With all due respect to you for your hard work and ability to work, I take exception to the notion that people who take "my" money are too lazy to get up and get going themselves.

I am a person whose husband waltzed off into the sunlight with a sweet young thing, leaving 3 preschoolers and me to cope. The greatest thing that ever happened to me was the early 70s Nixon program called Govt. 235 housing plan. The govt. picked up a large tab of the $145.00 month house payment on a new little govt.-owned house that sat in front of a sewage pond, but it was MY little house that helped restore some sense of dignity to my confused and scared self. Meanwhile, I patched together a living, such as it was, with various part-time jobs and some wonderful friends, Every year the government reviewed my case, and every year my share of the payment went up a little, based on the previous year's salary.

Eventually I was able to go back to school (yes, more govt. help, and yes, my share of the house payment dropped to the rate I had started with some years earlier because of my partial income while in school) and as time went by, I got on my feet. My kids are, in order of birth, a law professor at Univ. of Colo. School of Law, a middle school teacher in love with the job and her students, and an electrical engineer charged with responsibilities all over the globe.

I have given the government my rightful share of taxes, including never cheating on income from rooms I eventually have been able to rent out, so grateful for the help I received when there were no words to describe the terror and sense of helplessness I went through during my "dark night." I felt that the govt. was my ally. How GRATEFUL-GRATEFUL-GRATEFUL I am that my moment of truth did not come in the 80s when suddenly we were ridiculously all tarred with the moniker, "welfare queens."

I'm sorry you're tired; I retired just short of my 79th birthday. Admitedly I was not doing hard labor but was working comfortably inside. It was my desire to contribute as long as I could, however, and I do not feel it appropriate to focus on those days that I was so tired I wondered how long I could keep on. I am, in short, grateful for the opportunity to work and the training and ability to do it. I'm grateful to this country and its interest in helping folks like me weather the tight spots. If some take advantage I'm sorry about that, but the percentage, in my view, is no worse than the people of privilege who game the system in any way they can. There are losers everywhere; it is not limited to the poor.

How about considering the posture of getting out and helping the down-and-out instead of demonizing them? Believe me, there are many who need and deeply appreciate it.

  51. I agree 98%, with your post.

You are so true on your post about, "Islam is a "Religion of Peace.""

Nothing could be further from the truth. Islam is a Religion of Hate!! Yes I will call it that, a spade a spade, and an ass an ass. Islam is all about world domination. Look at what they have done, in Europe, rioting over cartoons. But that is the way islam works, through violence. They don't know the meaning of the word "PEACE", even though many have given their lives to liberate them and give them PEACE.

The people of Kuwait were suffering horribly after the invasion of Iraq. I won't list specific examples other than torture and killing. You can exaggerate your imagination to determine all of the things being done to the people of Kuwait. To say the least, there was MASS CRUELTY. SO, we rescue them and give them their country back. Needless to say, there is HATE instead of GRATITUDE! WHY? -- I think this can only be answered with the RELIGION OF HATE!

  52. Well, i am a blck woman, and i agree with you too....Mostly...

But, where is this affirmative action? and where are these handouts? that "most" blacks are getting..

I pay taxes, as do you...I, nor anyone in my family has ever been on welfare, or received any government handouts..

You criticize the media for their blatant lies and corruption, only when it benefits your ideas, yet, you don't see how the media is continuing to reinforce these racist stereotypes on Black America..
In my entire network of black friends, i do not know anyone who was ever given a "black scholarship" for college and chosen over a white person for a job who had more skills...It is truly quite the opposite..I learned very early, that i had to work twice as hard to be noticed..

So truly i detest your media driven ideals of who and what black people are..Heres an idea, talk to a black person..ask them to share their story with you...

I am disgusted, by being constantly told, THAT I am getting preferential treatment , due to my skin color. When in fact, that is a blatant and very narrow minded and racist lie..

So, you are tired?....YOU are tired?....So on top of everything that you are tired of, i am tired of the same...But also tired of being the scapegoat to reinforce your racist ideals...and believe me sir,, your ideas about blacks and "affirmative action" hold very little truth0---get over yourself.

  54. God bless you and all of the rest of those who are "tired" that have commented on this blog. I am only 25 and quite frankly scared to death of what I might have to live through. It brings be to tears to think of how far away from the founding Fathers' original intentions we are...I'm proud to be an American and its time more "Americans" stood up and said something. The media wants us to think we're the minority, but I dare say there are more of us than they care to recognize...pray for our nation and our leaders and that God will put the leaders in place that would rise up and turn this ship around!

Write your people you put in Washington and let them know they will not return next term if they keep giving away free stuff to a bunch of lazy no count people who feed off others. We made them depend upon us by giving all the free insurance, food stamps etc.. (There are pople out there who need our help.) But when we keep giving free money to women who have 6 or 7 kids without husband to help support they will continue. I worked hard all my life and I am retired now. I want those lazy people to get out and do that yard work/any paying job, no matter what the pay is fir if we take back our low paying jobs, get off of welfare, then we would not have the illegal people coming across the boarder to work. There would be no jobs for them. Thank you for this letter. You are 100% right. Did you send it to our President? To Congress? To the Senators? We need to send it to everyone in Washington and we need to PRAY FOR AMERICAN. God Bless you

If all of us that can see through the lies would write something like this on our blogs, we might make a difference. If we don't stop the socialist agenda of our current government, even those that love the anointed one, will be very sorry they were silent. To Forti Radici...you are wrong about this country...it never claimed to be perfect or to be without flaws, but it is still the best place on this earth to live. Otherwise, you wouldn't have the freedom to disagree. I'm still wondering why people that hate America stay here...why don't they just leave this country and go someplace else? If they would all leave, those that remained would be able to live in peace.

  65. I disagree with much of what "old Jarhead" said. I am ex Navy (1967-1971) and looking forward to benefits of Socialism. I recently retired and enjoying my "social" security paycheck as well as medical benefits I receive from VA in Houston/Galveston area.

Communism is composed of ruling class and working class, much like US military, Officers and enlisted. If we liked our US military duty, we will love Soiciaism.

We need to slowly expand VA and lower age requiremnts for Medicare etc. We should force all elected officials get same medical treatment as working people. Working people do not wear suit to work very often. Most people who do wear suit should also wear mask to hide what they are doing to real working people.

I will sleep better knowing my children and grand children will get medical care without begging for it in emergency rooms.

It is richest 1% of Americans who control 80% of United States wealth that are non working bad guys. They think nine holes of golf, two hour lunch and misstress or mister in afternoon is full days work. Money freed up by redistributing their ill gotten gains who solve most of our problems.

    Redistribution of Wealth 20/20 formula

Any individual who receives in one calendar year, money or profit in ANY form, more than twenty times federal minimum wage times 2080 shall pay 100% tax on excess.

Any individual whose net worth is twenty times annual maximum wage shall forfeit excess.

Using current federal minimum wage of $6.55 per hour, following limits would apply.

    $6.55 X 2,080 X 20 equals $272,480 maximum per year.

    $272,480 X 20 equals 5,449,600 maximum net worth.

Annual income taxes would still apply with lower income people paying lower tax rates. All private clubs including churches etc. would pay taxes.

Profits from 20/20 formula should get country moving and provide nice start on funding some form of medical care for all.

Anyone who thinks they deserve more is hoarding money.

Minimum wage has changed to $7.25 per hour.

But looking forward, we must be wise in our selection of representatives and voting. When a political party puts forward a name we should check them out and demand a change then as we smell corruption and remember to vote the best choice for the people not a party affiliation. This is the only viable solution given our constitution and governance.

  69. Holy crap Mac. I know how you feel. The world didn't turn out like they promised us it would did it? Well that's not terribly surprising, seeing as it never does for anyone. Don't get me wrong I agree with you and your sentiment completely and you have the right of every American to say so. But a persons right to free speech in no way compells anyone else to have to listen or pay attention. A lot of people exercising their free speech are just wailing into the wind, regardless of the message they are trying to get across. My point is that even though you are undoubtedly sincere and your grievances are legitimate, there are a lot of people that don't give a damn what you or I or anybody else thinks because their world is not the world that you or I or anybody else thought we were fighting for (We were misled). The sacrifices made in the past by you and the hundreds of thousands like you (and I) are just that, in the past. We should consider ourselves lucky if those sacrifices are acknowledged on the 4th of July or Veterans day. The structure and complexity of the world is beyond comprehension by any one individual, so no one should feel bad about feeling overwhelmed and marginalized by it. To sum up, I don't think we should complain so much about the way things have turned out, we should be more grateful that our meager efforts have had any affect at all.

  77. Dear Old Jarlid,

I am tired too. I agree with your view on much except the spreading of hate. "The Muslims" to which you refer are wide and diverse group. It is true that there are muslims who want to destroy us and implement their own take on the Quran. "The Muslims" you speak about are not ALL of the Muslims, just like saying that ALL Mormons are polygamists, ALL Christians are hypocrites, ALL Jews are stingy and ALL Blacks are lazy. In your "I'm tired" piece, you left the door open to immigrants who are here and work hard and are productive citizens. What's the possibility that we can be smarter about how we refer to those who want to bring us down by referring to them as radical Islamists? Your "I'm tired" piece is making the rounds, and although I know this was unintentional, your piece is spreading "the hate." I served for over twenty years myself. May I join you in sharing your frustration without spreading the hate that has so often failed us?
Help us weed out the bastards by not clumping them all into the same garden. Thank you for your consideration and your service. For more, please go to AIFDemocracy.org. I know that being 63 does not restrain one from learning. Most respectfully, ABS, CW4, USA, RET.

  78. I agree pretty much with everything you're saying, Jarhead. I'm just so sick and tired of most of the crap you address. Yeah, I know that a lot of muslims don't necessarily agree with the extremism displayed by their brethren. But I work with a number of them and they're always quick to jump on the defensive and point out stuff "we've" done wrong (talking about Americans). That ain't gonna work with me. "Waterboarding" is not on the same par as beheading and suicide bombing. Crooked CEOs also sicken me. I wrote a song about a lot of this stuff and posted it on my MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/shabbeyroadmusic , so please take a moment and listen if you get a chance. And keep the thought going. It's basic, but I see a number of "detractors" on your blog who try to sidetrack the issues.

  81. I'm 23 and I'm tired too. Of many of the same things as you, but you know what really exhausts me? People who think they are entitled to an online audience to gripe about how badly everyone else has screwed up, without recognizing their own ignorance. Particularly your ignorance about Islam. Like any great religion it has a diverse spectrum of followings, some peaceful, some violent. Where do you get your opinions about it by the way? Reading the news does not give you an education about a culture or religion, because, as you yourself has pointed out in your post, our press isn't a very good in this country. Unless you have spent time reading the Quran or talking to people who have studied in Madrasa, your opinion is trash because it isn't based on any of the philosophy behind Islam (which by the way means "peace"). You know what, I'm tired. I'm 23 and I am tired of the world that people like you have made, that now I have to fix.

  82. For the uninformed person above, Islam means submission, not peace. He is thinking of the Jewish greeting, Shalom Aleichem, which means Peace be upon you. Submission means submission to all of the Prophets teaching including making war on infidels in the Dar al-Harb (the World of War) until they are brought into the Dar al-Islam under Sharia Law.

I have read extensively about Islam, including No god but God, a pro Islam book by an Iranian religious scholar (tends a little bias towards Ali and the Shia) and a critical book The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam by Robert Spencer. I recommend both, and others of Spencers books. He blogs at JihadWatch.com. I recommend subscribing.

  84. Mr. Hall,

I just saw your "I'm tired" blog and I could not agree more. I hope this stirrs people up and they will get up and fight for what they believe in.

I want to comment especially about one aspect of your blog - the point about the American and British soldiers. That really hit home for me.

I am a German-born US citizen and my grandfather fought in WWII on the German side (BTW - the brave US veterans shown in Band of Brothers, like Shifty Powers, had the German soldiers picked right - the "Wehrmacht" soldiers did not want to fight. Most of them were drafted and would have rather stayed at home). He was part of the reenforcement troops intended for Rommel's Army in North Africa, but were held back in La Spezia, Italy, because Rommel had picked a public fight with Hitler at that time. Anyway, as they were hanging out waiting for deployment, Pattton's Army came from the South and captured my grandfather and his comrades. The next 18 months as a POW of the American Allied Forces was the time he remembered as "best of his life." He befriended the guards, and became a supply truck driver to the other local POW and troop camps supplying food twice a day. All his life he spoke with great respect and appreciation of the men of the US Armed Forces and was excited when I told them about my impending move to the US. Unfortunately, he never saw the US although he was so hoping to visit.

Where am I going with this? The humane treatment of and compassion with other human beings - even on the other side of an armed confrontation -is bread into the brave young men and women of our Armed Forces who so tiredless defend everything that is (and some that soon-to-be "was) great about wonderful country I am now priviledged to call my home. It is a system that teaches fierceness and respect and while there are bad apples everywhere - and our liberal press enjoys placating their misdeeds - the good in our soldiers reflects what is good about our country.

There are no words with which I could express my respect and deep appreciation to all of our brave military personnel - past and present - and I wish them the best. Be safe, be compassionate - and God bless!

My parent's money just seems to keep going down the drain.

I hope people keep reading this blog and seeing that they are not alone in their malcontent. While there are Republicans here in Illinois, it's a rather blue state. Such sentiments as you expressed are denounced as right-wing extremism.

I hope this country stops its downward slide, for your granddaughter's sake and my own.

But my PRAYER is that you have already acknowledged God and accepted His Son as your Savior. This is the best "retaliation" we have against all these things we're "tired" of AND against our children/ grandchildren falling prey to the wiles of the world as it is today. P.S., I also expect to have agitated people say they "disagree," to put it mildly, but I stick with my God-given right to say what I said. AND I'll be 61 in 2 days -- Merry Christmas!

Your writing is so full of hate, hypocracy and discrimination you must not sleep well at night. I wasn't sleeping well during the Bush/Cheney years when they were robbing us blind and getting us into unnecessary wars. Invading a country who was no threat to us for trumped up reasons so their oil buddies could get richer was treasonous. Now Iraq is worse than when Sadaam was there. Sad how far the US has fallen. And now we have a chance with an intelligent man who wants the United States to return to its core values and what does he get? Lies, and the party of "NO" just because they want to run things for their own greedy ends. I lobbyied without pay for 40 years for the handicapped, the elderly and the mentally ill and only met three Republican politicians I was proud to know and who cared for the handicapped and disadvantaged. The others all followed a Republican hard core line of "What's in it for my pocket?" Enough is enough. Let Obama try to get us back on track and then another Republican can come in and quadruple the national debt and steal all they can for themselves.

  100. Well said. My heart goes out to my parents who are in their early 60's. No retirement in sight. For the first time in my 30 something years, I am kind of glad that I haven't had children yet. Now I just don't know if it would be fair to bring them into this world. That is very sad.
I also find it disturbing when the person above who quoted the bible uses the term dickhead...really? This is a great example of why so many think Christians are crazy bible beaters. I am neither Christian nor Muslim. I prefer to keep that private. I don't care what religion anyone is as long as they are respectful, kind, honest. And I think that whatever higher power is out there is hoping for us to work it out. Will we? Very good question. I hope so. Speaking our truths and listening to each other with an open heart is a great start rather than being silent. And getting the younger generations educated and active.
Tell them to put those iPhones down long enough to learn something. Telling your stories is the best education. Pull out the photo albums and give them a history lesson. That is one of the best things my grandparents ever did.

  109. Thank you so much for your comments. I couldn't have said it any better myself. I don't have the luxury of being tired (although I often am), or getting out of this mess. I am 49, and I have a feeling I'll be seeing it through some rough times to come. Hopefully we can bring the change that is needed through the democratic process that is in place, but I fear it may be too late for that to undo all the damage that has been done. However, I have great faith in the majority of Americans who still understand what freedom is, and are willing to sacrifice for it. Those of us who learned while growing up how to work hard, make do with what you have, or do without will have the advantage over those who only know how to shop, play video games, or get their reality off a TV show. Mr. Fernando Sampaio, I also thank you for your comments and your perspective. I pray that we can bring back the Republic as our founding fathers intended for us, and that together we can assist the world in finding the peace that comes from the individual being responsible rather than the government.

Again, Mr. Hall, thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. And thank you so much for your service. I am so grateful, and honor those men and women who have given so much. Thank you. I hope you don't feel quite so tired now.

  112. Mr. Hall,

An anonymous comment was posted on March 2, 2010 by someone whom, I believe, misses the point entirely. His comment starts with "YO Jarhead". He also comments: "If you consider yourself a real Jarhead, just suck it up and deal with life." Isn't it rather the point that there is a defined difference between military and civilian life? While in the military, you must, for the most part, follow orders. As civilians, it is our responsibility to to think for ourselves; to take in information, analyze it and come to a logical conclusion about any circumstance we find ourselves in. We have the responsibility THINK and not to take orders. This president and this congress have issued us orders on many topics. It seems, now, to be unfashionable to have an original thought or to express one that is deemed politically incorrect. We can only thank our veterans for defending our country and our God-given rights. It isn't our government that gives us our rights as we have heard them recently say. If our rights come from them - they (and any other rights we have) can also be taken from us by them. So, I say to "Anonymous" - thank you for your service but suck it up - you have responsibilities now of a citizen.

I am tired of liberals who keep telling me about "separation of church and state in the Constitution." IT IS NOT THERE. The Constitution gives freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion.

  114. You are a piece of work! You spend 5 terms as a Senator, then go on to work as association executive at major institutions, well paid positions all with pensions and retirements, and if not, then well paid enough to fund your own retirement, and you have the gall to claim that retirement isn't in sight for you because of the economy. You live in a condo, have bought a condo for your daughter to live in (and she couldn't buy her own??), and undoubtably have more material assets and an income than the vast majority of people who read and/or respond on your blog here. You spew political rhetoric well.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Just published a post from a gentleman with a PhD, which I guess stands for "piled higher and deeper."

For his information, my five terms as a state senator produced about $14k in the retirement fund, which I put in a house in Florida. My senate salary ranged from $12k to $28k over my 10 years, and I was full time, unlike most.

I have never worked for an large institution. Some of my associations were able to make small matching contributions to my IRA. The market collapse due to the housing collapes (thank you Fannie & Freddie) wiped out 40% of it, though it has come back some.

We bought a condo at my last job not a mansion, and managed to save enough to pay it off. We couldn't sell it due to the market, so we allow my 34 year old step-daughter, and Obama voter who has never worked a 40 hour week, to live there as she has a daughter, 9 we are trying to get a start in life. Supporting two households hasn't left much from my salary managing a small non-profit (4 staff). We bought an even smaller condo near my present job rather than pay rent but the bank owns most of it.

So how the good doctor was so stupid as to picture me as a wealthy guy working for large institutions, I don't know. He probably thinks the healthcare bill will lower the deficit.

On the plus side, I now have IPF, so don't have to worry about a long retirement! ~Bob

    ReplyDelete
  119. I know in my heart that there are untold
millions of Americans who are thinking exactly the same thoughts and feeling exactly the same feelings expressed by Mr Hall in "I'm Tired".

The question becomes how do we collectively coalesce into a voice that will be heard in the halls of Congress and the Supreme Court? Is the Tea Party the answer? At this point I am not convinced that it is. The country’s
salvation may ultimately develop from that seed but the Tea Party’s reluctance to select a leader is very troubling, and very telling. The United States of America was not founded without leaders! It most certainly will not be
    resurrected without leaders.

They want it all and if they can't have it they will commit immoral acts, cheat, lie or steal to get it. Just like what the Democrats did to get this HC piece of garbage passed. It will come back to bite them in the rear. Good always conquers evil even if evil gets the upper hand from time to time...it always catches up to them.

The think its cute to mimic your expressions of 'I'm tired' with trite rebuttals that are obviously pedantic, highly suspect as to veracity and rather tiresome. They are not so "tired" as they are "tiresome". I am now an Independant because I can attest first hand at the tactics and crass manipulation the uber progressives used to facilitate the Obama takeover that is now propigated by bribes, threats and lies. In other words, he hypocritically fails to take any responsibility at all for the problems or for their solution, preferring, instead, to blame them on others.

  128. "I'm Tired" by: Robert A. Hall"

I'll be 63 soon. Except for one semester in college when jobs were
scarce,` and a six-month period when I was between jobs, but
job-hunting every day, I've worked, hard, since I was 18. Despite some
health challenges, I still put in 50-hour weeks, and haven't called in
sick in seven or eight years. I make a good salary, but I didn't
inherit my job or my income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the
economy, there's no retirement in sight, and I'm tired. Very tired.

Well good for you. A completely self made man, congratulations. I too worked hard for what I have, but I didn't get achive success by myself. I had the help of two wonderful parents who taught me right from wrong and the virtue of hard work. I had grand parents, aunts and uncles who supported my parents in their efforts, both emotionally and financially. I had a govenment that paid the majority of the costs of my veterinary education.

I'm tired of being told that I have to "spread the wealth around" to
people` who don't have my work ethic. I'm tired of being told the
government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and
give it to people too lazy or stupid to earn it.

'Spreading the wealth' is what people call it when someone else gets a subsidy, but never when they are the recipient. I did not pay the full and fair cost of my college education. It was subsidized by the government. It's not 'spreading the wealth' when a disabled person gets subsidized transportation to get to a job, and it's not 'spreading the wealth' when that same person lives in subsidized supported housing. And try going into any housing for the elderly and telling the parent of one of your brother marine's parents that you are tired of 'spreading the wealth'. Yes, there are people who will scam the system, there is no avoiding it, but if you let that poison your mind and blind you to all that does work, you will become like the rabid radicalist people who advocate violence against our elected officials.

  132. To all the people who are wondering "what can we do to change this?"

    Here's what to do:

    - Get informed. Read the left's textbook, "Rules for Radicals" by Saul Alinsky, read up on Bill Ayers and George Soros, look into the Cloward Piven strategy. This is how they intend to take down our country.

    - Get involved. We've got incredibly important elections coming up in 2010 and 2012. Volunteer for the candidates you can support and trust. Donate your time and money - but do the due diligence and make sure the candidate is on the level. If you have an incumbent leftist seeking re-election, give money to their challenger(s) in the primaries, so they will have to spend their time and energy fighting that battle, and will have less to work with for the main event.

    - Keep speaking the truth in love. As you can see over this past week, the left and their lapdog media are doing everything they can to paint conservatives as irrational, bigoted hatemongers. We all know that is a filthy lie, but we cannot let our righteous anger turn into violence, either physical or verbal, lest we give them an excuse to legitimately point fingers. Keep speaking the Truth long and loud, even to those who would persecute you. Just do it kindly.

    - Finally, PRAY! The founding fathers created this nation with the understanding that our inalienable rights as put forth in the Declaration of Independence were endowed by our Creator. He will not turn away from those who call on Him. Pray for Godly elected officials, pray for a changing of hearts and minds of those who would do this great country harm, and pray that he will give us strength and resolve to do what is necessary and just in these times of great uncertainty.

  136. Mr. Hall, I too, am tired, of listening to selfrighteus, "I do no wrong" sods like you. I became US citizen a few back because I was afrain of xenophobic, bigoted human being like you. Who, exactly, does not have a work ethic. The immigrants I see (legal or illegal) in this part of the country work their brown butts off. I never see any white, or black, for that metter sweating away under a 120 degree weather in order to take a few bucks home.

I don't totally disagree with regarding the housing "problem". But please don't just blame it on the people that bought homes they could not afford. Blame it on all the greedy factions. The sub-primer, the hedgers, the banks, the people, etc. etc. Everybody is to blame.

So what you are saying "No Muslim is a good Muslim." This sounds Hitlaresque... "No Jew is a Good Jew," "No immigrant, is a good immigrant," etc. etc. Get a life, Mr. Hall, when the white man came to this country in proceded to kill as many indians as it could. But you may be revisionist and not believe that part of history. Oh!, yes and it was only a few years ago that men by law had the right to beat up their wives, if they did not want to have sex, cook, etc. Remember... in this country.

I am judging you, sir, by the content of you character. You are a miserable, selfserving, righteus sod.

By the way. I am white, I am a proud US citizen. But people like you, sir, make me sick.

  137. The country is in a financial mess. But what no one is saying is bailouts happened because the banks and mortgage companies were not adequately regulated by Republicans who were in charge during the real estate bubble. It was a completely avoidable problem notwithstanding what Greenspan and Bernake have said. Most people that looked at real estate prices and liar loans knew it was a bubble. Treasury did nothing, the Fed did nothing and our economy tanked. So banks made loans to a lot of people who couldn't pay it back. Most of the bailouts were real estate related and those markets will take years, maybe a decade to come back to where they were. The new medical bill...a disaster. Too expensive, too complicated and leaves the entire medical industrial complex in the driver's seat. It will be modified or taxes will go up for everyone who can pay. The debt bomb which basically started under Reagan is being liquidated...often in bankruptcy. The outcome will not be attractive.

  138. FORTI: We no longer live in a place or time that allows for open boarders. The risks are too high. Yes, most of us are not native American and what happened during the Trail of Tears is very sad. So you really need to move on.

At 43, I look back and I didn't enjoy education or appreciate it fully, but I now value what I committed to and completed. I am raising 3 teenagers to be great adults/citizens and not spoiled children. My wife and I have been married nearly 20 years and have made it thru challenges because we are committed to each other.

As for jobs,I started mowing yards at 11 yrs old. Always made my own $$ since then. Over the last two years, I have personally risked all my assets to start a company. I don't think most "job mentality, government loving" individuals have a clue what it takes to start and/or run a real business. Our company has a mission to do great things for families and education. At no point during our development did we even consider that we would have more rules thrown on us (i.e. mandatory healthcare, tax increases, etc.). It blows me away that the government (who produces no revenue) takes from those who risk it all to fulfill dreams/goals/missions.

I could throw up all day on this subject. My rant on healthcare is located here: http://www.facebook.com/scott.huse?v=app_2347471856#!/note.php?note_id=194403868616

  140. I agree with a number of the sentiments, but I am afraid that people will read the former Senator's comments and draw the conclusion that one needs only to work hard to have all the basic necessities in life, when I am all too aware that working 50 plus hours a week and cutting corners everywhere does not always guarantee that. There are lawmakers out there that are STILL unaware of so many Americans who work full time but have little or no health insurance, or who can barely afford a modest apartment on their full time wages. I also don't want some nut to read this and think it justifies their going out and bombing a Muslim place of worship (or a Christian, or Jewish, or whatever one). We need to find a happy medium that makes life reasonably fair for anyone who puts in the effort, but too many people get polarized in their attitudes either to the extreme right or the extreme left. Where are all the moderates out there???

  141. Seeing my exact emotions and thoughts on someone else's blog verifes my sanity. At times when I am alone with my thoughts I think can this really be.

As I speak to others I so often hear them question the "Why" regarding the motivations of our politicians.
No response is satisfactory as our government is corrupted beyond comprehesion. Good people cannot think these bad thoughts and the corrupt know it.

  145. Robert,

I appreciate everything you have written about and the concerns you've expressed.

Now, all the talk, the writing, the complaining, will get us nowhere!!!!

Thank heavens for the Tea Party - at least they are out protesting what is going on in our society and trying to make a difference. I'm glad you posted your thoughts on a blog spot, but what are you going to DO about all your concerns? People can't make a difference, unless they make a move to make a difference. We can't fight crime or corruption unless we make a change ourselves.

I'm tired of people sending emails and complaining on the internet and I don't see a lot of DOERS out there DOING something about all the problems we have right now.

To be honest, I don't know what to do because as an individual I feel powerless. I can vote for someone to represent me in congress but I don't have the funds to get some lobyist to fight for my rights on capital hill and I have to work during the day - so when am I going to have the time to do it myself? If I were retired and had time on my hand I certainly would use it wisely enough to get out there and fight for what is right.

  146. I find this blog pretty much geared to the Fox News {see Republican Branch} and the far right and nothing more. This putz is a hard core righty who blames all on the Democrats and give credibility to the Bush administration. The Republicans of the last 25 years are the most mean spirited , lying and nasty political outfit ever! All you have to do is go back through elections and see the political ads- They are simply horrific. Watch Fox news make up crowd sizes, delete controversial info on the rightys---hell they even made the South Caolina Govs affair sound like it was the lady in South America's fault. All you are concerned about is power...nothing else. Search for a domestic program they originated---nada! Oh wait, you cut taxes for the wealthy , you know, dividends and the like. No offsetting expense cuts, just tax cuts. You and you ilk are pathetic---party first Americans second. And don't give me the BS that you served your country, many did. They just don't have the party first...anything else second.

  148. I'm sorry if I offend anyone but I'm getting tired too.

On the news right now, I am viewing a story about how Ann Coulter (who I do not like) getting shouted down, and Karl Rove getting threatened, and Sarah Palin (who I also do not like) getting heckled. And yes, I happen to think Karl Rove is a bright guy. I am tired of Free Speech being a constitutional right---unless, of course, you differ from the liberal view.

I am tired of having an opinion, and not being able to verbalize it for fear of hurting others' feelings or inciting dissent---but having to listen politely while others assume I want to hear, or that I agree with, their views.

I am tired of the media stories, amounting by now to urban legend, of the reports of violence at tea-party gatherings. The only violence that has been factually documented was that of an African-American Tea Party participant who was beaten up by thugs from the SEIU (my former union). Hey, if Sarah Palin's "reload" is a call to violence, then Obama's "fired up---ready to go" is a call to arson.

Speaking of which, I am tired of pretending it's ok that Sean Penn wants conservatives to die of screaming rectal cancer, and that Bill Maher wants Glenn Beck to die an agonizing death.

I am VERY tired of the absolute certainty of progressives like Janeane Garofalo that if I disagree with Obama, I am a racist. I refuse to be painted with her broad brush. Anyone who really knows me recognizes how ignorant her assertion really is.

I had a great job and made lots of money. It was inherited...oh no, I had to work 70 hour weeks...sorry...my bad.

You don't have health care because it's too expensive...not my problem...refer to the last part about the 70 hour weeks.

Your house is underwater, financially...SO? Do you want me to make up the difference?

  152. I enjoyed reading your article. I think what sets it apart from a lot of others in a similar vein is the pointed lack of bigotry and/or racism, which is commendable. Too many people these days are using issues like this as reasons to vent their own personal hatreds.

I think that your article lacks only one salient point, however. High taxes and government spending are not just a moral issue (taking money from workers and giving them to non-workers) but a serious economic one as well. In fact, the economics of it all trumps all the other issues, as it is this excessive taxation that is dampening the economy.

States that engage in heavy government spending end up taxing their citizens to the point of exhaustion. Since our system of Government allows for some variation in the way individual States operate, people have some choice in where they want to live.

High taxation is forcing many people to flee high-tax States, like New York and California. New York State, for example, has had a negative population growth, and most of the people fleeing the State are the more educated, high income earners.

So we end up with a population base of uneducated and unskilled workers, and not surprisingly, they tend to be on some sort of assistance. And since each County has been forced to pay for local assistance programs, some Counties have staggering tax burdens - one person on welfare for every two workers.

It was John F. Kennedy who enacted the first tax cuts to stimulate the economy - and it worked. When you over-tax the populance, you destroy productivity, as people realize that an extra dollar earned is not adding much to their own bottom line - just increasing their taxes.

The biggest scam going on today with taxes is at the local level. Federal taxes have remained largely the same over the last few years. But more and more, States are pushing their "Federal Mandates" to the local level, which in turn forces counties to jack up property taxes.

Suddenly, people are finding they are paying $4000, $5000, or even $6000 a year in property taxes for what used to be considered very modest houses.

Some are paying $12,000 a year or more - what used to be considered a mortgage payment, and probably more than they pay in Federal Taxes.

By pushing Welfare funding down to the County level, State and Federal officials can say, with a somewhat straight face, that they have "not raised taxes".

But to the average homeowner, paying the bills, it is quite a different story.

Bill Clinton oversaw a "reform" of the Welfare system which resulted in a steep decrease in the number of people applying for assistance. We need to revisit this again. Far too many people are scamming the various entitlement programs and getting away with it.

Chances are, maybe you know someone doing this even now - maybe a relative or family member.

We need to tighten requirements for eligibility for such programs. Perfectly ambulatory people do not need to be on permanent disability.

If you want to collect welfare, you should at least do some sort of part-time job for the County or State.

But name me a candidate who is running on a platform of welfare reform? I can't think of one.....

Because things are different across the border to the North, I cannot say that I can relate to 100% of what is being discussed in your piece. However, we do have similar issues with the unbelievable distribution of our precious tax dollars to help irresponsible, lazy citizens buy flatscreen TVs and organic food. My own hometown is littered with single mothers with exposed belly buttons and hoop-earrings; ashes from their cigarettes pepper their newborn's innocent head. The idea that a small part of my hard work pays for their nicotine is appalling.

Most people in North America assume that if you want to vote for "freedom" and "liberty", you have to go Left-Wing; ironic that that choice of government somehow makes us feel even more oppressed.

Bush (who did everything he could to weasel out of his National Guard duties) and condemn John Kerry (who served combat duty in Vietnam). I guess, to you, military service is only honorable if you're a Republican.

You sound like a sad, grumpy old man who spends his days yelling at kids to get out of his yard. It's obvious that you want America back the way it used to be: white men running the show, and minorities who knew their place cleaning up after them. Well, it's not happening.

  160. I don't disagree with everything you say but the overwhelming majority of it is highly misleading. But guess what? I'm tired too.

I'm tired of people being suckered in by what Fox News, the Republicans and the Right Wing commentators tell them. I'm tired of people quoting the 0.1% case as if it were common. I'm tired of voodoo economics and other right wing bullshit. I'm tired of people not checking their facts before making grandiose assertions. I'm tired of 10% of the population controlling 70% of the nation’s wealth.

I'm tired of hearing people who claim to be Patriots propose scrapping fundamental American principles like the separation of church and state. I'm tired of watching the corporate CEOs fleece the American working and middle class while those being fleeced cheer them on because they've been duped into thinking that somehow this is a good thing. I'm tired of having Christianity shoved in my face and being told this is a Christian nation. I'm tired of defending the teaching of evolution at school boards because back woods rubes can't understand the difference between science and religion.

I'm tired of opinion replacing facts and beliefs replacing knowledge. I'm tired of ignorance and stupidity being looked upon as virtues while being educated is vilified.

I'm tired of drunken assholes being allowed to own and carry loaded guns. I'm tired of being ranked with third world countries in effectiveness of Health Care and infant mortality. I'm tired of the war in Iraq where our troops were sent in with inadequate numbers, inadequate equipment and an inadequate strategic objective. I'm tired of the United States being at the bottom of the industrial world in student achievement while the Texas school board tries to rewrite history in its ultra-conservative image.

I'm tired of people pounding their chest about how wonderful they are while refusing to recognize that we have serious problems in this country that need resolution and I'm tired of those same people blocking those of us trying to solve those problems.

One last thing, I am utterly tired, as well as appalled, at hearing that a country that still has the largest thermonuclear arsenal in the world should seriously consider Sarah Palin as a viable presidential candidate.

Yeah, some people abuse the system, but isn't it nice to know that the system is in place just in case you ever, god forbid, need to use it? See that's the problem with the Tea Party, you all have jobs. I work hard too, I've been consistantly employed since I was 16 (and prior to that I volunteered at a local nursing home every day after school). I don't mind paying taxes, because on the off chance that one day I find myself in dire straits, or my kids do, or any other hard working American does, they can stay alive, survive and live to fight another day. Its easy to call people on welfare lazy, or cheats, or whatever other label you want to throw at them, but the fact remains that there are plenty of people who've just had a string of bad luck.

It just amazes me how many people are willing to abandon their natural human tendency towards compassion for a few hundred bucks.

I'm tired of hearing about how great this country is by folks who can't even retire because their Republican politicians and Wall Street buddies screwed us over for the last 8 years.

I'm tired of how folks who hate Obamacare and the govt. takeover of medicine, etc. get to call their local VA and schedule an appendix operation that costs them $7.00. Or run down to see their doctor who charges Medicare for every test known to man because they have a sniffle.

I'm tired of ex-military vets who made a choice to serve and to defend us and this country against the worst threats to our safety and security who suddenly become paranoid, selfish, scared little babies every time a pansy liberal wants cleaner air or healthcare for kids or for the rich to give back to a country that has given them everything.

You are right, it must be tiring to try and live in your fantasy world, no wonder, the real world just won't go away.

Theres too many half-truths and flat out lies in your piece to go over one by one, but I'd love to hear your explanation on how the Community Reinvestment act caused a recession thirty years later. You could even blame it on Clinton if you want to stick with your liberal demonizing ways, after all - he didn't veto the Graham Bliley Leach Act, but to act like the subprime market caused a recession that the securities market clearly caused ( and your vote for Bush was a vote for complete and total inaction to fix it) then come to your blog and bitch about the "good old days" just reeks of right wing propaganda blaming the left for all the problems that the right caused.

P.S. Your hard earned money also goes to bailing out multi-billion dollar corporations when they fail hard on a gamble or two... but I'm sure you sleep better at night thinking all your tax dollars go to poor, lazy, minorities.

  170. Haven't you enjoyed the benefits of a taxpayer funded benefits as a retired state senator since 1982?

How exactly is "retirement not in sight" due to the economy?

    ReplyDelete
  171. To the fellow who suggested that I've been enjoying a government-funded retirement since I left the state senate in 1983, they don't let you retire at 36! Given that inflation and interest rates had gone to double digits under Jimmy Carter, I took the small amount I had in the Commonwealth's retirement system and used it as a down payment on a house. Maybe a mistake, because I could have started collecting about $7k a year next year when I turn 65, if I make it.

My senate salary was $12k a year when I started and $28k when I left (as I was in leadership).

Since I’ve worked for small non-profits since I left, my retirement is depended on what I could save in an IRA, plus from some of them a small match. That took a hit like everyone from the economy. I’m still working, and supporting two households, as my 24 year old step daughter, an Obama voter, has never worked full time. In college for the third time. But if we don’t, the granddaughter suffers.

I’ve saving what I can, as I have IPF, so not sure how long I can work as its degenerative. IPF kills more Americans than breast cancer each year, is incurable (many people with breast cancer are cured), but there are no pink ribbons, postage stamps or races for the cure for IPF, not television fund raising, for the most part. Not a political disease, so it probably gets less that 10% of the research dollars that breast cancer gets.

Not whining, have had it since 2005 and didn’t mention it in this piece, just explaining why trying to save a few bucks from what the government takes is important to me. Or, given the long term prognosis, to my family.

Since I didn’t retire from the service, the fellow who said I can get cheap services from the VA is also wrong. ~Bob

But as long as you continue to watch Fox News, you'll continue to be lied to and told that you're being forced "spread your wealth"... that "latte liberals" hate our military (even though it's the conservatives who want to send them off to die in needless wars)... that it's liberals and not the Christian right that are fighting for theocratic control over everyone's lives... that it's liberals and not conservatives--who relentlessly try to legislate bans on everything from marijuana use to gay marriage--who hate freedom.

  176. Ah, the Crusades, Europe’s defensive response to the Muslim invasions. Thankfully after the Muslims conquered Christian Spain and marched into France, my ancestor, Charles Martel (The Hammer!) soundly defeated them at the battles of Tours in 732, or Islam, with child-marriages, slavery, polygamy and the second -class status of women, might (historians disagree) have displaced Christianity in Europe, from which western civilization developed. Given the backwardness of all Muslim-dominated societies, you may now thank Charles for your freedoms and standard of living.

You don’t mention that over a million Europeans were kidnapped into slavery in North Africa over a period of three hundred years, more than the number of Africans brought to the 13 colonies or the early United States. But then the Qur’an endorses slavery, including forced sex with slave women, “that which your right hand possesses.”

So, when you say something like "I believe 'a man should be judged by the content of his character, not by the color of his skin'" and then follow it up with your hatred-filled paragraph on Muslims, you really mean "I believe 'a man should be judged by the content of his character, not by the color of his skin-except for Muslims. You know, just 'cause you served your country doesn't make you right, and doesn't give you the right to hate. 186. It’s hard to respond to someone who is so uneducated he thinks that “Muslim” is a race. You are born into a race, you cannot decide to be black or white or Asian. Islam is not a race. Islam is a religious-political system. You can join it by making the declaration of faith, saying “There is no God by Allah, and Mohammad is his Prophet” and following the five pillars. You can also leave Islam by changing your religious-political views, though those who strictly practice the faith will try to follow the Prophet’s injunction to kill apostates.

I have no problem with the tens of millions of peaceful Muslims that want to live and let live, though they are irrelevant as they are captives and victims of the extremists. It is Muslims who are murdered most often by other Muslims who disagree with their views or lifestyles. The girls and women being murdered in honor killings are not Christians or Jews, but Muslims.

I do have a problem with the millions of Muslims who believe they should strictly adhere to the Qur’an’s injunction to bring everyone under the control of Islam, that the rest of us must convert, die or live as second-class subject dhimmis, paying the jizra. Strictly followed, the Qur’an and Hadith sanctifies wife-besting, second class status for women and child marriage, following the example of Mohammad. Is opposing that racist?

Before engaging in debate, suggest you understand the difference between a race, and a religion/political system/total way of life that is Islam. Hating Germans because they were German might reasonably be termed “racism.” But not hating Nazis.

  187. Well said sir. I am 15, but these days I feel about 60 myself! Dear God do I fear for this country and what my stupid peers are flocking to. Sometimes I think they take it all for granted, but you put it into words better than I ever could. Most children my age act like five year olds and blindly accept what their parents tell them. Also, they're as lazy as you described them. If any of them even consider getting a job I can tell you it will be low-paying and so easy a monkey could do it. And the army? Never. Not me, though. I plan to go to collage and become a Manga artist, paying for it by joining the Marines. I don't want my country to fall into ruin the way you accuratly described it could, but you know kids my age, everything we say goes in one ear and out the other. So in short I must apologize for my generation: I hate them too!

  188. I certainly agree with your sentiments. It truly does seem depressing. However, I am the mother of 4 boys, who I am trying to raise as hard-working, service-minded, God-fearing gentlemen. I know that I am fighting an uphill battle; but as Winston Churchill said I will "never, never, never give up"!!! They are my future!

  189. I'm tirrred too, tired of people compalining. We live in a great country which continues to improve over time. I am 56 yr old navy vet, semi successful in life; but I believe disgusted Republican Okie said it all very well. Get over your bitching and moaning, President BHO is movin us forward. I'm tired of people living in the past thinking it was all peaches and cream. The repubs messed with our standards for 8 yrs and now want to say everything was perfect, NO it wasn't - we are better today.

  190. "color TVs" ... boy, you really have the pulse of reality in your grasp. Things suck, and you have decided that it's all about Obama. You had me at the McMansion comment, but the rest was nothing but an uninformed reactionary rant.

The real enemy of the country are the rich right wingers, but you have squarely put it on powerless progressives. I'm really tired of listening to ignoramouses like you who can't tell what is happening and believe everything that comes out of Limbaugh's sass-hole.

  191. I love how old people immediately post their age as if it will suddenly give them more credibility. But guess what? Your whole article just comes off as a pessimistic opinion of an old crone. You're tired of the way things are? Too bad! I am the new generation, and I love the way things are going.

Most of your views are so skewed by the fact that you know nothing of the people that you lash out at. You view the poor, the Muslims, druggies, democrats, etc, etc, as the end-all evils in the world but you don't know SHIT about them. Ever wonder why you're not a druggie? Probably b/c you grew up with 2 parents who cared about you and not in some shit infested inner city block with underfunded schools. Change is inevitable in this world, you should know that at 63. I'm tired of people like you, pessimistic and AFRAID of everything in this wonderful country.

  192. It's interesting that you're tired now, where have you been the past 8 years? You're tired of people blaming everything on the government, but sir that's what you just did. You're tired of "latte liberals" not in uniform, but where is your criticism of Cheney and Rumsfeld both using deferments for their benefit but sending our children in harms way. You're tired of illegal immigrants but you continue to eat the produce they pick and eat the meat that they butcher and benefit from the taxes they pay. You're not only tired but you are one angry white guy, exploiting all the hot buttons that make other people mad but no facts to back up this rhetoric....not exactly the image I would like to think of on Good Friday...what would Jesus say to you?

  193. Liberal politicians tell us over and over again that we can't deport 12 million illegal aliens.

To borrow a line from the president: "Yes, we can!"

  194. I'm only 29 and I'm tired. I worry teaching them that acting up is going to get them a spanking. That calling teachers sir and ma'm won't make them look stupid in front of their friends. That in order to eat, you must work. That God loves them and they can proudly say that.

I haven't served in the military, but anyone who has is a hero to me. I hold you guys high in my heart. Because if it were not for the likes of you, I'd be chained and dead most likely by now.

Thanks to you all who have served. I just hope this is all a dream and when we wake up, common sense will no longer be uncommon, working for your money will be required and that there will still be people standing tall tofight for me, my kids and our country

  195. I'm only 29 and I'm sick of fearing informing my sons if they act up they get spanked. I'm sick of people coming to someone's blog and calling them names. You don't like it don't read it. This country is becoming a bleeding heart laughing stock and the people that agree with it are not only foolish, but deserve your time when it comes. I honor our defenders. You guys kick ass. To all th bleeding hearts: WAKE UP

  197. I'm a muslim. I don't belive in genital mutilation, stoning people to death, honor killing, or killing people who aren't muslim. none of that is found in Quran. What is your problem with me? Keep wallowing in your ignorance- you sure are loving it.
