Women’s Sports Should Be Women’s Sports

Women’s Sports Should Be Women’s Sports
Excerpt: Enacted in 1972, Title IX was designed to ensure that “no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” For sports, this meant that women were to receive equal opportunities to men. (Overeager implementation of the provision has, regrettably, caused many universities to scuttle men’s sports teams.) Between 1972 and 2011, female participation in high-school athletics increased from around 250,000 to 3.25 million students, with similar increases at the collegiate level. Transgender sports policies threaten women’s participation in sports. The CIAC’s transgender policy allows an individual to compete against the opposite sex so long as his proclaimed gender identity is the same as how he presents at school. [Does that mean that if I dress in a basketball uniform every day for school, wear sneakers with built-in platform soles, and “self-identify” as being 6' 11" tall, they have to allow me on the basketball team even though they can see I’m more than a foot shorter than I claim and can’t shoot for beans? Back in the original Greek Olympics, all the sports were done in the nude. That might help sort this out–as in “Hey, if you’ve got one of those, you have to play over there!”  It would definitely sell a lot more tickets, too. I added emphasis. Ron P.]

California Lawmaker Who Killed Gig Jobs Wants State to 'Train' Freelance 'Adult' Workers
Excerpt: Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-AFL-CIO), is now pushing a bill that would, as Reason reports "...require adult entertainers and video performers, including webcam performers, to obtain a business license and complete a state-mandated training course before being allowed to ply their trade." "Training"? This gives new meaning to the term government over-reach. [Has it ever occurred to anyone in California government that movie and web businesses can operate just as conveniently from 48 other states that ALL have internet? (I’m not counting Alaska, it’s too cold most of the year) Most of those other states don’t have California’s taxes either, and have cheaper housing and better schools and roads. Unfortunately, California is serious. Shouldn't we unionize the hookers, too?  Ron P.]

Political Trials Should Be Tried Outside of the Beltway

Political Trials Should Be Tried Outside of the Beltway
Excerpt: Attorney General William Barr is enlisting U.S. attorneys outside the Beltway either to investigate or review several high-level cases related to President Trump, the Washington Post reported over the weekend. Barr has asked federal prosecutors from “far-flung offices,” as the Post described it, located in remote places such as Connecticut and Chicago, to handle these sensitive matters. Barr’s legal shuffling of the deck includes the egregious prosecution of Lt. General Michael Flynn; the investigation into Crossfire Hurricane, the FBI’s counterintelligence probe of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign; and new material collected by Rudy Giuliani detailing alleged corruption in Ukraine possibly tied to U.S. politicians. [This is a brilliant solution to the problem of rendering just, NON-POLITICAL decisions in highly politicized areas. It ought to become standard procedure, especially in DC. When more than 90% of an area’s citizens are from one party, there’s little chance for a fair trial for anyone of the “out” party. Ron P.]

Virginia Lawmakers Vote to Require Licensing for ‘Art Therapy,’

Virginia Lawmakers Vote to Require Licensing for ‘Art Therapy,’
Excerpt: The Virginia state senate has voted unanimously to approve a bill that would require art therapists to be licensed — citing concerns about the sharpness of scissors and the “toxic chemicals” in glue presenting safety risks. According to a piece by Reason’s Eric Boehm, the bill was approved last week, and it doesn’t really detail what kinds of qualifications would be necessary in order to obtain one of these sorts of licenses. Rather, it states that it would create a new board, made up of mostly art therapists, to figure that out. Now, if you’re a reasonable person, you are probably puzzled to hear that glue and scissors are being considered dangerous. If you’re like me, you may have even encountered glue on your own as a child, and you’re still very much alive to tell the tale. So why do these lawmakers seem to feel differently? Why do they think that adults need to be protected from things that five-year-olds can handle perfectly fine themselves? It’s simple: They don’t. [They’ve got to be kidding–except they aren’t. Polarization Narrative Is a Triumph for Leftism

Polarization Narrative Is a Triumph for Leftism
Excerpt: Here’s how it works. We begin with a longstanding norm, one embraced more or less by everyone. At some point, a vanguard of progressives comes along to challenge, decry, and subvert the norm. At first, the populace rejects the critics and the middle is secure (for instance, the way the Beat Generation was confined in the 1950s to small social enclaves). But the critics don’t give up. They press the point in movies, the media, classrooms, and courtrooms, turning those spaces into forums of dissent. They begin, too, with a benign premise: let’s not take our values for granted, let’s examine our assumptions, consider alternative viewpoints. We are a relatively open society, we have a natural American penchant for innovation, and so the consideration moves forward. As the genuinely radical nature of progressive critics emerges, conservatives, traditionalists, and some moderate liberals step up and cry, “Whoa!” It’s not that they are trying to shut the other side up or end the debate. Instead, they have examined the progressive line of thinking and judged it wrong. The goal, then, is to oppose any action taken on the basis of the critique. Keep on talking, they say, but we don’t want to change our laws, our education, our norms, our country. [Yep, the author hits this one right on the nose. Ron P.]

Criminalizing Dissent at University of Amherst
It is said that Jews are the canary in the coal mine of society. What you will read below is shocking if you are not Jewish and were not paying attention. This should make all alumni who have kids and grandkids think about being very careful where they advise them to apply. Think twice about paying tuition for the purveyors of today's cultural revolution (Mao would be proud). I recommend that alumni starve these (mental) institutions of donations. And don't vote for anyone who would make tuition free at such gulags. Yours truly, Larry Greenberg

Winter cold heaps misery on Iraq, Kurdistan Region’s neglected IDPs

Winter cold heaps misery on Iraq, Kurdistan Region’s neglected IDPs
Excerpt: ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Yezidi residents of camps for the displaced are bearing the brunt of an exceptionally cold winter spell hitting parts of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. Snowfall has blanketed parts of the country as far south as Baghdad in the last week. Those in temporary shelters across the country are exceptionally vulnerable to the adverse weather conditions. (nearly all Iraq’s Yazidis (360,000 out of 400,000) remain in tent camps six years after ISIS forced them from their homes, and three years after their villages were liberated. It’s a miserable sight. --Mindy Belz, Globe Trot)

BOOM: ICE Throws Down the Gauntlet, Arresting Two Illegal Aliens in a California Courthouse
HURRAY! At last the feds at ICE have told CA that they can take their stupid protective rules for illegals and put them where the sun don't shine. I love it. The screaming will be mounting up to the skies, and they'll try other ways to bar ICE agents from doing their job, but hopefully this will continue. In the end some crazy CA judge or DA may tell their officers to deny access to the ICE agents or maybe even threaten them with force. That would get really interesting. I would rejoice to see some CA bureaucrats arrested on federal charges and taken away by federal marshals who show up with a SWAT team. --Del

Your Pessimism Is Ridiculously Inaccurate

Your Pessimism Is Ridiculously Inaccurate
Excerpt: The real measure of our prosperity is in what, for us, is mundane: running drinkable water over a wide range of temperatures, hard roofs and floors, refrigeration, artificial lighting, inexpensive garments and bedding made with machine-woven cloth that withstands being cleaned with powerful inexpensive detergents in powerful affordable machines, widespread literacy, mastery at using the electromagnetic spectrum, liability insurance for drivers and for homeowners, well-stocked supermarkets, fresh blueberries in New York in January, ice cream in New Orleans in July, air travel, automobiles, air-conditioning, aspirin, antibiotics…. You, Mr. or Ms. Reader, will have no trouble extending this list for pages. Each and every one of these seemingly humdrum features of our everyday lives will inspire you to exclaim “Wow”... Accustomed to constant access to an abundance of such marvels, we fail to recognize them for the marvels that they are. Instead, we focus only on the failure of this marvelous reality of ours to be even more marvelous. With our glass 99 percent full – and with this fullness seemingly produced and guaranteed by some mysterious laws of nature – many of us are apoplectic both that the “distribution” of this bounty isn’t as ideal as we can imagine, and that our glass has yet to be filled even further. [In 1967, I was sent to Vietnam. On my arrival, one of my surprises was that our unit headquarters had a “cleaning lady,” a local Vietnamese woman who dumped the wastebaskets, did minor cleaning and mopped the floors daily. She had to hand-carry a mop bucket’s worth of water up a flight of stairs to do that. By custom, whoever of the Marines in our headquarters happened to be on the lower level and had a free hand, would carry that bucket up the stairs for her. I’ve forgotten her name, but she looked MUCH older than my then-mid-50s grandmother; she weighed no more than 100 pounds and had no teeth. That bucket had to have had more than 20 pounds (2.5 gallons) of water in it.  When she left our employ, I happened to see her personnel file; she was 29 years old. I seem to recall we were paying her about $8 (around 9,000 piastres). Per month. Not weekly, daily, or hourly, but per month. Guess why she left the job. She had earned enough in the almost two years she’d been doing that job to move to Thailand and buy a large farm with its livestock. She was “rich,” and could now afford to leave the war zone. Life in most of the world was like that, then, and it still is today in more places than you think. Simply being an American makes you richer than half the people in the world. And, yes, every word of this is true. Ron P.]
