Evanston Will Fund Local Reparations With Marijuana Taxes
The bad idea that just won't go away has been revived big time in a Chicago suburb. Well, I have to give them credit for one thing, which is that of the several reasons why reparations won't work, one is that trying to tax everyone to pay for them would bring on a revolt. How do you tell recent immigrants, including POC from Africa, India, etc, that they have to pay tax for supposed slavery legacy they never had anything to do with? But just taking the money from a new revenue source seems easier and somehow reasonable. Of course, it's not, you are taking that money away from everyone else who is not Black but lives there, but hey, that's a detail. The other main things remain, such as how do you decide who gets how much. Every single man, woman, and child with skin less than White gets the same amount? Regardless of how much of their genes are not African, or how rich they are already? That's not going to work either. So some group is going to make up some rules about what people get how much, what small Black owned businesses get help and how much, what other businesses don't, etc. And absolutely guaranteed, there is no way to do that and have everyone in the community happy. The arguing and complaining will climb faster than a big Roman candle on the 4th. I look forward to reading about the screaming chaos in the public meetings when the committee releases the policy statement on how the money will get distributed --Del (Bet it comes soon to Madison, WI. ~Bob)
