Random Thoughts for October, 2018.

Random Thoughts for October, 2018.
By Robert A. Hall
Feel free to post or forward.
Funny how the Democrats totally believe a 36-year-old vague allegation against Kavanaugh, but didn’t believe Kathleen Willey, Juanita Broaddrick, Paula Jones or any of the other Clinton accusers. Nor do they believe Clinton had sex with any of Jeffrey Epstein’s underage sex slaves during his many visits to Epstein’s “orgy island” or trips on his sex jet. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeffrey_Epstein https://nypost.com/2016/10/09/the-sex-slave-scandal-that-exposed-pedophile-billionaire-jeffrey-epstein/
How’d you like to be the Supreme Court nominee of the next Democrat president? People will start questioning your kindergarten classmates as soon as your name is announced.,
Thirty years from now, if the Republic survives (something I’m not confident of) people opposing a Supreme Court Nominee will be bringing in psychics to claim the nominee committed a horrible crime in a previous life.
I think if Trump had nominated Obama to the Supreme Court, Democrats would have claimed he shouldn’t be confirmed because he was born in Kenya.
"Find out just what people will submit to, and you have found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them; The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress." --Frederick Douglass
Time flies even when you’re NOT having fun.
Don’t feed the robo-callers.
Facebook meme. Then: She said, he said. Now: She said, he’s dead.
We all celebrated Labor Day in September, but isn’t it time to establish a Non-Labor Day, to recognize that growing segment of the population that gets by without labor? Oh, maybe PT jobs when begging, borrowing, stealing, or the charity of family and taxpayers runs thin, but essentially working their way through life with as little labor as possible.
A hurricane is God’s way of telling the rich not to build houses on the coast.
I have trouble understanding why brave men should risk their lives rescuing people who were told to evacuate and didn’t.
If you want to insult someone in Madison, Wisconsin, you can say, “Your mother’s a Republican!” Or, “Your father believes in a balanced budget!” If you really don’t like the guy, you can call him a “Damn Constationalist!”
Nike taking on Kaepernick as the new face of “Just Do It” won’t stop me from buying from them. That’s because I never bought any of their overpriced stuff anyway.
Nothing will make you feel old like having your granddaughter turn 18.
I like the “Nature’s Touch” flavored water drinks from Kwik Trip. Not too sweet or strong, and only $6 for a 12-pack. But the marketing? On the label it says, “Naturally flavored with other natural flavors.” Maybe they just have a sense of humor.
Millennials are the first generation to think you deserve time and a half for actually showing up. And if they work for a whole week, it’s promotion time!
First day of fall and we wake up to a sunny day...and 40 degrees outside.
I spent too much time on computers. I got Helvarti cheese for my sandwiches, but was saying I got Helvetica.
The VA gave me an imaginary dog as as an emotional support animal. I wouldn’t mind, but it’s a Chihuahua.
From Facebook: “Everyone needs a dog. Some people just don’t realize it.”
Giving booze to some people is like poisoning puppies.
Too many people think they know just how the world should be run when they can’t run their own lives successfully.
If you live in a capitalist, westernized society with the rule of law and contract enforcement, chances are you have shelter, enough food to eat and clothing to wear. Much of the non-capitalist world doesn’t. Except for the elites.
When some people smile, it’s like the sun came out.
When others smile, you grab your wallet.
Imagine the books that will be written by administration officials and insiders when Trump is no long in office.
Whoever the next Democrat candidate for president is, I’m sure we can find a woman who was too drunk to remember when or where, but is sure he sexually harassed her in high school.
Supreme Court nominations. The only court where hearsay evidence is not only admissible, but considered always true by one side.
Madison is upset over ICE raids here. I’d like to get a bumper sticker that says, “I support ICE.” But of course, that would give liberals, who don’t believe in freedom of speech, permission to trash my car.
Fallacies do not cease to become fallacies because though they become fashions.” The old fallacy of Socialism is now highly fashionable with the fissiparous left and millennials, even though it always, always leads to oppression, coercion and privation. Over a hundred million people died last century because it was fashionable then.
I watch little TV, but I think it’s good that advertisements are becoming more entertaining, since they now constitute about 50% of the programming.
People are complaining about billionaires buying their way into space on civilian projects like Space X. Not me. If they spend a billion on their flights (which may not come off) think how much of that money will find it’s way down to average folks like us who build the craft, make the parts, make the steel and other materials, and provide logistics and support. Putting a billion or so into the economy is hardly a bad thing.
Get the collection! My “Random Thoughts” from 2008 through July, 2013 are collected in this book: The Old Jarhead's Journal: Random Thoughts on Life, Liberty, and Leadership by Robert A. Hall

Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything by Steven D. Levitt Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J Dubner

A colleague suggested I read this book, and I’m glad she did. I knew about it for years, but the title put me off. I assumed it was another attack on free markets. It is anything but. In fact, the the authors say, quite correctly, it has no unifying theme. It is really their answers to a series of interesting questions, like do sumo wrestlers and real estate agents cheat, or what caused to sharp drop in crime in recent decades. Even if you disagree with them, I think you will find it both entertaining and interesting.

Response to column supporting communism

Alan J. Kellner: The green and gold rely on some red -- just don't call it communism
Dear Editor. In Alan Kellner’s long panegyric to collectivism, he expresses surprise that his working-class father loathes communism despite not having read Marx. Maybe dad has read history and is aware that communist regimes murdered well over 100 million of their own people in the 20th century. Maybe he knows that there has been no communist regime without one-party rule, or one that allowed freedom of speech, freedom of religion and freedom of the press.

Maybe dad understands that free markets have raising hundreds of millions of people from poverty. Maybe he know that when India and even autocratic China instituted some free-market reforms, the numbers of the middle class increased by several orders of magnitude. Maybe he didn’t want to live in a society run like the USSR, China, Cuba, East Germany or, now Venezuela.

Maybe dad knew that even Denmark says it is not a socialist country. Or maybe he knew that Socialism and Communism inevitably lead to a planed economy, and always, always, to coercion, oppression and privation.

The brilliant economist Dr. Thomas Sowell, who grew up in a poor black family in the south, started his career as a Marxist. But he looked beyond the pretty theories to the results for real people and became a free-market advocate. Kellner should do the same. But with thousands of professors like him teaching the chimera of collectivism, I’m afraid future generations will have to go through the fire themselves. It is an open question if, once lost, they can ever get back to the prosperity and freedom of our current system.

Judiciary approves Kavanaugh, sending nomination to full Senate after Flake request
Excerpt: EXCERPT: Flake earlier had announced his support for Kavanaugh, but then disappeared from the committee room as lawmakers offered hours of statements on the proceeding. When he returned to speak, he said he would vote to advance Kavanaugh in exchange for a one-week delay in a Senate floor vote on his nomination. “I think it would be proper to delay the floor vote for up to but not more than one week in order to let the FBI to do an investigation limited in time and scope,” he said. Flake was reportedly in discussions with Sen. Christopher Coons (D-Del.) and other members of the panel. (My theory: Flake, Collins, and Murkowski don't want to vote for Kavanaugh but lack a legitimate reason not to. I think they want to extend the process in the hope they'll find something to justify a "no" vote without looking like the backstabbers and traitors they'll be if they do that. Let's take the vote Tuesday and if the nomination goes down, so be it. Kavanaugh says he'll go with the committee. Then we'll know we'll have some Republicans in the Senate who liked Kennedy as a swing vote just fine and the conservative hopes (decades old) of a conservative court will probably be sacrifice to moderate Republicans. But oh, oh, oh, they are so conscientious, so want to do "the right thing." Bull! --WT)

Jane Mayer: Accuser Told Ronan Farrow She Wasn’t Sure of Story
Excerpt: Jane Mayer said on Monday that Deborah Ramirez, who accused Brett Kavanaugh of sexually harassing her, told her New Yorker colleague Ronan Farrow that she couldn’t be sure of the Supreme Court nominee’s guilt. Confronted with a New York Times report indicating Ramirez expressed doubts about Kavanaugh’s guilt to former Yale classmates, Mayer said Ramirez shared those doubts before they published their bombshell report on Sunday.
