Too much worth reading news and comment to hold

Update

I posted yesterday, but a lot going on. I also noticed I used "their" when I meant "there" in my comment about Ferguson in yesterday's post. I know the difference, but my fingers often don't. Sorry. ~Bob

General News and Comment

Must Read: Alone Again, Naturally. By Maureen Dowd
Excerpt: His circle keeps getting more inner. He golfs with aides and jocks, and he spent his one evening back in Washington from Martha’s Vineyard at a nearly five-hour dinner at the home of a nutritional adviser and former White House assistant chef, Sam Kass. The president who was elected because he was a hot commodity is now a wet blanket. The extraordinary candidate turns out to be the most ordinary of men, frittering away precious time on the links. (Uber liberal Dowd has gone sour on The One, now sees what we always saw. ~Bob)

Worth Reading: Multiculturalism Starts Losing Its Luster. By Theodore Dalrymple
Excerpt: Many women I have encountered as patients who came to Britain from Pakistan 30 years ago, at 16 or 18, still know little English—but not from any unwillingness to learn. Their husbands actively prevented them from learning the language, to make sure that they would stay enclosed in a ghetto and not get any ideas above their station. The same rioting youths who protested British society’s failure to accept them as equal citizens have themselves sought to reproduce the unequal social patterns of rural Pakistan, half a world away, because it suited them to do so. Multiculturalism encourages this stance. If all cultures are equal, and none has the right to impose its standards on any other, what is wrong with the immigrant ghettos that have emerged, where the population (that is to say, the male population) enjoys, de facto, extraterritorial rights? If it is the custom of their ancestral culture to keep girls out of school and force them into marriages that they do not want and to confiscate the passports that the British government issues them for their personal use, what can a multiculturalist object without asserting the superiority of his own values? . (Published in his great book Not with a Bang, but a Whimper: The Politics and Culture of Decline.)

Important: Pentagon violated law with Bergdahl prisoner swap, government watchdog says
Excerpt: The nonpartisan Government Accountability Office says the Defense Department's failure to notify the relevant congressional committees at least 30 days in advance of the exchange broke the law. The GAO also says the Pentagon's use of funds to conduct the transfer, when no money was available, was a violation of the Antideficiency Act which bars spending by agencies above the amount of money that Congress has obligated. (Well, when the president does it that means that it is not illegal. Nixon, 1977, embraced by Obama. ~Bob)

Excerpt: It’s only August, but an overzealous teacher and some overzealous cops have already landed a high school student in serious trouble for having — or, in this case, merely imagining — something that represents a weapon, but isn’t actually anything remotely like a real weapon. The student, 16-year-old Alex Stone, was busted after he wrote about using a gun to kill a dinosaur earlier this week. (Support Charter schools and home schooling. ~Bob)

Emotional Storms Are No Response for Disasters: A new study shows that government aid and World Bank projects are not enough to spur lasting recovery.By Amity Shlaes
Excerpt: One such theory is that restoring old structures or hurricane and flood spending can so stimulate economic activity at a disaster site that the place will emerge better than it would have been prior to the misfortune. Our officials routinely buttress this thesis. In addition to such arguments for government or private spending, we see a second theory: disaster as a kind of natural selection of businesses. There’s yet a third theory, which is related: that disaster spaces can benefit from a specific version of Joseph Schumpeter’s “creative destruction.”

Interesting: Be lucky - it's an easy skill to learn. By Richard Wiseman
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/3304496/Be-lucky-its-an-easy-skill-to-learn.html
Excerpt: And so it is with luck - unlucky people miss chance opportunities because they are too focused on looking for something else. They go to parties intent on finding their perfect partner and so miss opportunities to make good friends. They look through newspapers determined to find certain types of job advertisements and as a result miss other types of jobs. Lucky people are more relaxed and open, and therefore see what is there rather than just what they are looking for. My research revealed that lucky people generate good fortune via four basic principles. They are skilled at creating and noticing chance opportunities, make lucky decisions by listening to their intuition, create self-fulfilling prophesies via positive expectations, and adopt a resilient attitude that transforms bad luck into good. (I've always been pretty lucky. ~Bob)

Perry Grand Juror Is Democratic Party Activist. Sought Out a Grand Jury Witness While Serving. By Erick Erickson
Shoe me your shocked face. ~Bob. Excerpt: Rho Chalmers, who disclosed to the Houston Chronicle yesterday that she was a member of the grand jury that indicted Texas Gov. Rick Perry, was an active delegate to the Texas Democratic Party convention during grand jury proceedings. Chalmers’ active participation in Democratic state politics is important because she claimed yesterday to the Houston Chronicle that her decision to indict Perry, a Republican, was not based on politics.

TN High-School Student Suspended For Saying ‘Bless You’ After Someone Sneezed
Excerpt: A young girl, who claims she was standing up for her religious beliefs in the classroom, was suspended after breaking a class rule of saying “bless you” after a classmate sneezed. When Dyer County High School senior Kendra Turner said bless you to her classmate, she says her teacher told her that was for church

Ferguson News

What would you do?
You are a white cop responding to a reported rape of a child. You are alone and spot the black suspect near the mother's apartment in a black neighborhood. You order him to stop at gun point, but he refuses and walks rapidly towards an ally. you see no weapon. Do you shoot him and face riots and a murder trial, or let him go and assure the rapes and perhaps worse of other young girls? Some retired cops on my list responded to the question. ~Bob

Letter Worth Reading: Black-on-black violence hardest to understand
https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?tab=wm#inbox
Excerpt: What is most troubling to me is the self-hatred that drives some African-Americans to give other blacks a pass when they shoot an unarmed black youth in the street, yet burn down their own community and demand justice when that killer is white. ... -- Melvin Boone, Sanger B. Powell Correctional Center, Oneida. (This guy writes intelligent letter to the paper from jail. See the next one, not on Ferguson. ~Bob)

African-Americans should stop using the N-word
Excerpt: As a self-respecting African-American, I find it humiliating to be in a room with like-minded people when other blacks casually use the word as if it were a term of endearment.
The N-word by definition places the African race on a collision course with evolution, leaving them frozen in an ape-like state. As one of slavery's most enduring legacies, the civil rights era of the 1960s spawned a movement to end its use. ... -- Melvin Boone, Sanger B. Powell Correctional Center, Oneida.

Worth Reading: Opportunists Fan the Flames of Racial Unrest. By Victor Davis Hanson
Excerpt: On average, more than 6,000 African-Americans are killed by gun violence each year. That startling figure is nearly equal to all of the U.S. combat fatalities incurred in both Afghanistan and Iraq over some 13 years. African-Americans are the victims in about half of the homicides in America each year despite the fact that blacks represent only about 13 percent of the U.S. population. One would think that these alarming statistics would provoke the sort of protests that we’ve seen in Ferguson, but that is not the case.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon withdraws National Guard from Ferguson, as clashes subside
Excerpt: Gov. Jay Nixon ordered the Missouri National Guard to begin withdrawing from this St. Louis suburb on Thursday, the clearest sign yet that authorities believe the violent clashes between police and residents are subsiding after nearly two weeks of civil unrest.

Missouri Governor under fire after calling for 'vigorous prosecution' of cop who shot dead Michael Brown but grand jury won't make decision until OCTOBER
Excerpt The Democrat governor released a five-minute video on Tuesday, where he said: 'A vigorous prosecution must now be pursued.' His statement began: 'Ten days ago, a police officer shot and killed Michael Brown in broad daylight. The world has watched as a community has been engulfed in grief, anger, fear, at times violence.' The governor then called upon Attorney-General Eric Holder and St Louis county prosecutor Bob McCulloch to 'meet expectations' by finding justice for Michael Brown and his family 'thoroughly, promptly and correctly'. (No Democrat can resist racial pandering in Obama's post-racial America. ~Bob)

12 Inspiring Photos of Hardworking People Putting Back the Pieces of Their Once-Peaceful Home of Ferguson
Excerpt: After numerous days of unrest in Ferguson it’s nice to finally see some positive action happening in this Missouri town. Men, women and children of all ages have put on their working clothes and set out to clean up this rampaged city.

Comment from a friend in St. Louis
From Blog Reader BW: A friend of mine in St. Louis sent me the information below. I have known him for decades. He is sane, reliable, and trustworthy. Here is his statement: "The odd-ball groups have arrived in Ferguson. A national communist group is here, a church group last night said a group prayer and then a chant to get Officer Wilson, then threw bottles of urine on the police. One guy from Austin, Tx. has been arrested 3 times, people from California, and many states are here to make trouble. There is even a zoo-train going up and down the street giving rides to kids while their parents protest. The local news just reported that two women with signs supporting officer Wilson came to the riots last night to exercise their 1st amendment rights. The police had to circle them to protect them. Gov. Nixon is on local TV now saying he will not remove the county prosecutor. This afternoon a petition was submitted containing 70,000 signatures of people who wanted him switched. Mr. Holder came and met with the Brown family, said he's is for fairness. He did not have time on his visit to call or meet with the police officer or his family." --BW

Worth Reading: Hands Up, Don't Loot. By Daniel Greenfield
Excerpt: The interior of the Ferguson Market and Liquor Store is littered with broken bottles and scattered snacks. Despite the plywood boards covering the windows and doors, looters with their faces covered in bandanas helped themselves to anything they could find as those who came to memorialize Michael Brown carried on his work. The violence in Ferguson didn't begin when a police officer shot Michael Brown. It began when a 300 lb thug robbed the Ferguson Market and abused a clerk. The release of the video showing the obese criminal assaulting the clerk led to a terrified statement from the store manager that he had not called the police and had nothing to do with the release of the video. “They kill us if they think we are responsible," he said.

Fix Ferguson by Getting Rid of the Media. By Daniel Greenfield
Excerpt: If there’s a problem in America or anywhere in the world, inflicting the media on it can only make it worse. By some accounts there are more reporters in Ferguson than there are protesters. That may be why the protesters ran for cover behind the media after throwing bottles of urine at the police. There are so many reporters in Ferguson that the rioters and looters can use them as human shields.

Worth Reading: Sharpton Is Right: Racism Is Rampant. By John Perazzo
Excerpt: To frame it another way, 33.5 of every 100,000 whites in the U.S. assaulted a black victim at some point during each of those five years. Oh, sure, the nitpickers will point out that during the same five-year period, blacks in the U.S. committed, on average, some 327,900 assaults annually against whites—meaning that about 898 of every 100,000 blacks nationwide assaulted a white victim at some point each year. In other words, statistically the average black was nearly 27 times more likely to assault a white, than vice versa—898 versus 33.5 (out of every 100,000).

Holder AWOL for black mom killed by cops: Justice ignores unarmed woman's slaying by police
Excerpt: Attorney General Eric Holder is in FergusonMissouri, ostensibly to investigate the shooting of an unarmed African-American by a white police officer. What he is not investigating is the shooting of an unarmed African-American woman by his own federal officers, in his own jurisdiction, the District of Columbia. And that has the family of the late Miriam Carey so outraged, they announced Wednesday they plan to double the amount of money in their lawsuit against the federal government to $150 million.

Ferguson: Another False Narrative Meant To Divide? Holder's latest actions called 'vigilante justice' by ex-cop, Secret Service agent
Excerpt: With an army of FBI agents on the ground and the governor of Missouri calling for a “vigorous prosecution” of the officer who shot 18-year-old Michael Brown, many are questioning if the case isn’t already tainted before any arrest has been made.

About 400,000 in Mass. must seek new health plan. By Felice J. Freyer
Excerpt: Nearly 400,000 people in Massachusetts will need to reapply for health insurance before the end of the year, and many of them probably do not even know it. They are people who do not have employer-sponsored health insurance and who instead sought insurance through the state. After the Massachusetts insurance website failed last year, most of them were enrolled in temporary coverage that ends Dec. 31, which is why they must select a new plan.

Excerpt: A study recently published in Health Affairs describes how price transparency drove down the cost of MRIs by almost twenty percent from 2010 to 2012. Compared to patients who did not have the advantage of transparent pricing, cost per procedure dropped $220. Further, there was a significant shift from hospitals to outpatient facilities.

Should Local Schools Admit the Latest Illegal Immigrants?
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/current_events/immigration/august_2014/should_local_schools_admit_the_latest_illegal_immigrants
Excerpt: School districts around the country are beginning to discover where the Obama administration has moved many of the new illegal immigrants, but most voters don’t believe these youngsters should be allowed to attend local schools. Thirty-two percent (32%) of Likely U.S. Voters think these illegal immigrants should be allowed to enroll in local public schools this fall, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Fifty-three percent (53%) disagree and say they should not be permitted to attend local schools. REPORT: Fracking Doesn't Create Destructive Earthquakes. By Matt Vespa
Excerpt: The debate is over; fracking doesn’t cause destructive earthquakes. The highly non-controversial way of extracting natural gas, which has been used since 1947, has been a focal point of some absurd claims that they’re a threat to the environment (via Associated Press)

Worth Watching: Proportional response?
Someone sent me the link above, to a scene from the TV program West Wing, in which the President asks a really cogent question, and in the end demands his military people come up with a response to those who have killed an American that will really, truly, for damn sure get their attention. It's not a long clip (2.28), I recommend watching it. Yes, it's way past time to hit people so damn hard, so fast, that the few survivors have their heads spinning and the rest of the world sits back and says "Those Americans are goddam dangerous!". My ideas: Day and night air strikes on any target we can find, every vehicle, every artillery piece, every suspected ammo dump, and drones overhead quietly waiting with IR for body signatures of men with weapons, who all then go to Allah as death rains from the sky. Done day in, day out, night after night until we get frustrated because we can't find a damn thing worth a bullet. By which time they will be hurt enough and weak enough that the Kurds and the Iraqi army can mop them up as they run, preferably with a "no prisoners" policy. Just a thought..... but sadly, the fictional President of that scene and today's actual President are very, very far apart in how they think. I do read that the Kurds have really tightened up, even in little towns every man from 17 to 70 has got himself a weapon and at least some ammo, and they are ready to fight the ISIS guys alongside the organized Kurdish forces. They have figure out that these ISIS maniacs are as dangerous as dogs with advanced rabies, and the only thing you do with such dogs is put them down. We are giving the Kurds some air support, and have at least promised them some more advanced weapons, which really just means antitank rocket launchers so they can at least take out the ISIS armored vehicles (that we gave the idiot Iraqi army fools). But if we just supply small arms ammo, grenades, and antitank stuff in plenty to the Kurds, they will put them to good use, and if our air support does at least significant damage to the ISIS equipment, things can turn around. What we can hope for is that once the ISIS guys start taking a real beating, and start retreating, more and more people like the Iraqi army will jump on the bandwagon and go after them. It could turn into a real downward spiral for ISIS, and they could get really chewed up and chased all the way back into Syrian territory. Meanwhile, it'd be nice if somebody figured out if there's anyone in Syria who also hates and wants to destroy ISIS, that we might offer support to as well. Hitting them from both sides would be a dream come true. But I am looking for nerve and competence from our leadership. No, I have not been smoking any herbs, I just engage in deep wishful thinking sometimes. --Del

Worth Reading: Suicide Bombers. By Theodore Dalrymple
Excerpt: However secular the tastes of the young Muslim men, they strongly wish to maintain the male dominance they have inherited from their parents. A sister who has the temerity to choose a boyfriend for herself, or who even expresses a desire for an independent social life, is likely to suffer a beating, followed by surveillance of Stasi-like thoroughness. The young men instinctively understand that their inherited system of male domination—which provides them, by means of forced marriage, with sexual gratification at home while simultaneously freeing them from domestic chores and allowing them to live completely Westernized lives outside the home, including further sexual adventures into which their wives cannot inquire—is strong but brittle, rather as communism was: it is an all or nothing phenomenon, and every breach must meet swift punishment. Even if for no other reason, then (and there are in fact other reasons), young Muslim males have a strong motive for maintaining an identity apart. . (Published in his great book Not with a Bang, but a Whimper: The Politics and Culture of Decline.)

RE: Bedbugs at the U.N.
Muslim apologists won't like the sarcasm any more than the underlying truth. Even if only 1% of Muslims were jihadi-oriented, that's still 12 million people dedicated to the destruction of Western Civilization. Meanwhile, the other 99% go along to get along (and keep from getting murdered), and are doing NOTHING to stop it. Classic definition of a cult. --SA

NYT: U.S. Commandos Tried to Rescue James Foley. By Daniel Doherty
Excerpt: But the U.S. government didn’t forget about him; on the contrary, the president himself green-lighted a top-secret operation to rescue him and other hostages in Syria. Alas, the mission failed. (I agree with Del's solution, above in "Proportional Response." If I were president, there would be a lot of dead ISIS people, but no one would dare touch an American for years. The murder of the teen in Israel who was American is ignored, because he was Jewish. ~Bob.)

President condemns brutality of ISIS:
Excerpt: Now, Jim Foley’s life stands in stark contrast to his killers. Let’s be clear about ISIL. They have rampaged across cities and villages killing innocent, unarmed civilians in cowardly acts of violence. They abduct women and children and subject them to torture and rape and slavery. They have murdered Muslims, both Sunni and Shia, by the thousands. They target Christians and religious minorities, driving them from their homes, murdering them when they can, for no other reason than they practice a different religion. (Translation: Based on O's history in Libya, Syria and every other place in which the US has confronted thugs on his watch, ISIS will soon be receiving US humanitarian aid [probably including ammunition], in an effort to "Reset" their understanding of the West. Buy burkas for your wives and daughters before they disappear from the bazaars and Kasbahs. --TH)

Excerpt: But on a deeper level, the statement suggests 2) some serious problems with this administration’s understanding of man’s nature and propensity for evil. Let’s look at a few tweets that get at this: ... President Obama’s utopian fantasy of “the future” “always” being “won by those who build, not destroy” is just obviously and resoundingly false, for better or worse. I mean, define “future.” And define “winning” and “building vs. destroying.” Tamerlane had tremendous success destroying and slaughtering his enemies — for most of a century. And World War II didn’t end by building up Nagasaki

Worth Reading: American Decapitated by Englishman. by Mark Steyn
Excerpt: From the United Kingdom's point of view, the Afghan war has long been in essence a British civil war relocated to the Hindu Kush and played out between those British passport-holders loyal to Queen and country and those who regard themselves as soldiers of Allah. But the execution of James Foley broadens the scope, and foreshadows a world in which Americans are beheaded by nominal "Australians", Australians by "Belgians", Belgians by "Canadians", Canadians by "Germans", Germans by Americans. There are two approaches to ISIS: You can kill it. Or you can feed it. And right now we're feeding it - with manpower, and with victims.

Quote
The President is wrong to continue to downplay this threat by saying that ISIS is claiming to be at war with America merely out of expediency, or that ISIS is motivated by sheer 'nihilism.' This is not a "J.V. team," as the President has put it. ISIS is an army of cold-blooded killers motivated by radical Islam. They continue their march, uninterrupted, to convert by the sword, kill Christians and other religious minorities, and expand their control of the Middle East. The Iraqis have already demonstrated that they cannot stop them on their own. The President's current path of action has been far too limited to make a difference. We must do what is necessary to eliminate ISIS, protect the innocent, and keep Americans safe." -- Representative Mike Pompeo, (R., Kan), a member of the House Select Committee on Intelligence, West Point graduate, and former Army cavalry officer.

Excerpt: Then he was turned over to the Islamic State as a token of this Free Syrian Army group’s allegiance to the new caliphate. The Free Syrian Army are the “moderates” to whom the Obama Administration has given weapons in Syria. Thus the incoherence of the Obama foreign policy is laid bare: he is funding what he considers to be heroic freedom fighters in Syria who, when they cross over into Iraq, becomebloodthirsty terrorists.

Video: Irate Chris Matthews Taken Aback by Obama Reax to Foley Beheading; Says of ISIS 'If They Want to Die, Help Them Out.' By Ken Shepherd
Excerpt: "I don't know why he used the word 'justice.' It's not appropriate here. This is an attack on our country, we have to react to it," an upset Chris Matthews reacted to a video excerpt of President Obama's statement today about the beheading by an ISIS member of American freelance journalist James Foley. (Chris Matthews? He of the Obama-induced leg tingles? I gues when a journalist gets the chop, it hits home. ~Bob)

Interesting: The logic of not paying ransoms By Adam Taylor
Excerpt: However, there may have been one big tactic they didn't try: paying a ransom. David Rohde, a well-respected journalist who works at the Atlantic and the Reuters news agency, touched upon this Wednesday, when he wondered whether U.S. foreign policy had failed Foley with its refusal to negotiate with his captors. Rohde points out that journalists of other nationalities were apparently released after their governments paid large sums to the Islamic State, something the U.S. government refuses to do (though private individuals and entities may). ... And while the United States generally refuses to negotiate with kidnappers, there are times when it appears to do so, as shown by the recent exchange of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl for five Taliban commanders. (The basic laws of human nature remain unchanged after thousands of years. you reward behavior you want to get more of. You punish behavior that you want less of. Which is why the rose of the modern progressive welfare state is matched by rising rates of non-marital births, broken families, divorce, crime, drug abuse, domestic violence, unemployment and entitlement drones unwilling to work. Which is why we don't pay ransom--and why we should pound ISIS until nothing moves on the ground. ~Bob)

Answering question on Israel, Bernie Sanders tells townhall hecklers to ‘shut up!’
Excerpt: Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has little patience for being heckled. The self-described “socialist,” often named as a liberal alternative to Hillary Clinton in 2016, fought with constituents over Israel and the deaths of Palestinian civilians in Gaza that escalated into an angry screaming match.

Permanent cease-fire may require Palestinian Authority’s return to Gaza. By Samuel R. Berger and Stephen J. Hadley
Excerpt: The Hamas terrorist organization forced the PA out of Gaza in 2007. But in the West Bank, the PA’s security forces have proved relatively effective in maintaining security. There has been good cooperation with Israeli security forces, and considerable progress has been made in building the governmental institutions of a potential Palestinian state. By contrast, Hamas’s rule in Gaza has been disastrous for its people — producing economic failure, brutal governance, human hardship, little hope and three wars with Israel in six years.

Interesting: Al Jazeera America Staffers Rattled By Layoffs, Catastrophic Ratings. By John Nolte
Excerpt: A year after the launch of the cable news network Al Jazeera America, layoffs, rumors of more layoffs, and catastrophic ratings have staffers rattled. Writing for Columbia Journalism Review, Dean Starkman reports on the struggles of the Qatar-based cable news network but misses one vital point: ... What Starkman misses is what has to be most grating to AJAM: The network has absolutely no impact on the national conversation or news cycle.

Why Jews Are Worried. By Deborah E. Lipstadt
Excerpt: And despite all this I wonder if I am too sanguine. Last month, pro-Gaza protesters on Kurfürstendamm, the legendary avenue in Berlin, chanted, “Jews, Jews, cowardly swine.” Demonstrators in Dortmund and Frankfurt chanted, “Hamas, Hamas; Jews to the gas!” And a pro-Hamas marcher in Berlin broke away from the crowd and assaulted an older man who was quietly standing on a corner holding an Israeli flag.

An Execution Wave Against LGBT Iranians. y Majid Rafizadeh, an Iranian-American political scientist and scholar
Excerpt: President Barack Obama has long depicted himself as a defender of women’s and LGBT rights not only in the United States but across the world as well. Yet, where is his voice when it comes to the growing number of executions and the persecution of the gay and lesbian community as well as the repression of women in the Islamic Republic of Iran? In addition, why has the LGBT movement not criticized the Obama administration or made a movement over these injustices, egregious actions, and human rights violations committed in the Islamic Republic against the gays and lesbians?

The Bankers To The Terrorists

Excerpt: WikiLeaks documents prove that the United States has known for quite some time (years) that the fictitious pseudo-state of Qatar bankrolls Hamas as part of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Ikhwan. While Iran is the world’s major facilitator of terror, Qatar is their bank. ... This is the banker to the world of terror – Muslim Brotherhood, Al Qaeda, Hamas, Boko Haram and more.
