Update
I finally got through the backed up email, though I had to
delete a lot, especially older ones. But I'm posting today, as with Church and
the GOP picnic tomorrow, I expect to have maybe an hour of computer time at
most.
The last update I sent I understand that I put the
addresses in the "TO" field instead of the "BCC" field to
keep them private. My bad. It was late, I was tired and pushed for time--but
that's no excuse for sloppy work. Sorry.
We went to the Sun Prairie Corn Festival today. Always a good
time, and the weather was nice (84 degrees and sunny, thank the mild summer).
The corn was great, we bought a tote of 11 ears for $7, brought 6 home. Bonnie
has always wanted a helicopter ride, so we paid $40 each for her and her
son-in-law to go up. I passed. $40 for 5 minutes seemed a lot. I said the last
time I flew in a chopper (Ch-46) they were paying me. She loved it, said it was
very exciting. I said imaging how exciting it was or a door gunner in Vietnam ,
returning fire as they were getting shot at. Chopper crews were among the
bravest of the bravest. ~Bob

How Not to Do It. By Theodore Dalrmple
Excerpt: Last week, the British government announced—because
the opposition in Parliament forced it to announce—that 70 prisoners, including
three murderers and an unspecified number of burglars, drug dealers, and
holders of false passports, had escaped from a single minimum-security prison
this year alone. Twenty-eight of them were still at large. That so many of them
absconded suggested that they were not quite the reformed characters that
justified lower levels of security in the first place; but as usual in Britain,
temporary embarrassment soon subsides into deep amnesia. The fact is that the
whole episode is precisely what we have come to expect of our public
administration and was nothing out of the ordinary. . (Published in his book Not with a Bang, but a Whimper: The Politics

Worth Reading : Free
Market Policies Yield Success for Pacific Alliance
Excerpt: Chile ,
Colombia , Mexico and Peru joined together in 2011 to
form the Pacific Alliance, a trade alliance centered on free markets. In a new
report, Nicolas Lopez, research associate with the National Center
for Policy Analysis, explains why the Pacific Alliance has been successful. In
1991, the countries of Argentina ,
Brazil , Paraguay and Uruguay formed the Common Market of
the South, also known as Mercosur. Mercosur was an attempt to integrate the
countries both economically and politically. In practice, Mercosur became a
protectionist bloc, imposing high tariffs and setting up trade barriers. Since
its inception, Lopez writes, the entity has signed only a single free trade
agreement. In fact, its charter prohibits its members from signing trade
agreements without the approval of Mercosur. The Pacific Alliance has followed
a very different path. The four countries did not concern themselves with
politics, rather they focused on economic objectives -- the free flow of goods,
capital and people -- that would benefit the members: Ninety-two percent of
goods traded between Pacific Alliances are free of tariffs. Within 7 years, all
tariffs on merchandise will be removed. There are no travel visa requirements
between Pacific Alliance countries, which has spurred tourism and further
contributed to commerce. Pacific Alliance countries have a low inflation rate,
unlike Mercosur nations. As a result of these policies, the Pacific Alliance
countries have been the recipients of more than $71 billion in foreign direct
investment, and they conduct half of the trade in Latin
America . The Pacific Alliance nations also saw much greater
stability following the 2008 economic crisis than did Mercosur. (Subscribe to

Excerpt: Historian David McCullough says it's a crime that
schools are no longer teaching history. I agree. Knowing history gives us a
sense of where we came from, it instills some degree of pride in our country's
many achievements. But most importantly, it warns us of that loose board on the
bottom step. To ignore history is certainly to repeat our mistakes and places
our nation in grave peril. Before Newsweek went left wing radical, and then
belly up, they ran a poll on just what Americans knew about their own country. The
results were chilling. 30% of Americans could not tell you what occurred on
9/11. 60% couldn't identify the Vice President of the United States . Another
60% could not tell you how our Constitution came to be and nearly that many
could not tell you what the Bill of Rights was all about. Several identified
one of the first ten amendments as guaranteeing free health care.

Is the Tax Code
Driving Taxpayers from Wisconsin ?
Excerpt: Since 2011, Wisconsin
has cut its taxes by $2 billion. Under the leadership of Governor Scott Walker,
Wisconsin lawmakers have simplified the tax code, eliminated 17 different tax
credits and reduced the number of income brackets from five to four. Yet the
state loses $136 million each year as its residents leave Wisconsin for other states. Could they be
leaving because Wisconsin taxes remain
burdensome? NCPA Senior Fellow Pamela Villarreal says that the tax code is a
likely culprit. In addition to its income tax, Wisconsin has high property taxes (the fifth
highest in the nation), though its sales tax (5 percent) is lower than the
rates in the four states that border it.

We have met the enemy
and he is IS.
Excerpt: The Washington Post’s Adam Taylor
claimed on Wednesday that the Islamic State’s “extremist brand is winning” in Iraq — but how could such a thing happen in what
was once the most secular Muslim country in the Middle
East ? A Breaking Defense report shows that IS/Caliphate forces
are adapting to and adjusting to American airstrikes in
much the same way that the North Vietnamese once did: (Two recent articles have
added to the level of concern about the Caliphate. One article mentioned how
surprising it is that in the cities they have taken over, the infrastructure is
still running, there's power, food deliveries, sanitation services, etc. Yes,
women aren't going outside by themselves, the minority non-Sunnis are either
gone or paying special tax, but there executions every day and life is
somewhere near normal. The second article dealt with how little we still know
about ISIS, who the leaders are, how many men they really have under arms,
where all their support is coming from. And they have money in plenty, they're
selling bootleg shiploads of oil and getting away with it, robbed the banks of
many millions in gold, and seem to know how to handle all this. All of which
says these guys are not just crazies who like to behead people for fun. They
are way too competent at too many things, and the flow of young men from all
over the Islamic world into their ranks means they're gaining strength all the
time. Could they take Baghdad ,
could they take much of the Kurdish territories too? Could they really form
some kind of semi-stable nation, with lots of oil wells and a lot of US made
weapons? I would have thought not, that at some point they will collapse from
overexpansion and a growing resistance fueled in part by the Arab nations that
don't want to see a Sunni caliphate succeed. But stranger things have happened,
at one time no one thought that Mao's ragtag army would ever take over China .
We live in such interesting times..... and we're not seeing a strong commitment
by the USA
or the European nations to take on a fight with these guys. Stay tuned.......Del. as bill Clinton
might say, what we should do about this "depends on what the meaning of IS
is." ~Bob)

the past conquered, invaded, and took over countries. This is agreed to by all
