Today's interesting political news and comment

Update

Trying to catch up. Posting though I have unread email and had to delete a lot. Sorry. ~Bob

Alas, one of our best contributors, Kate, a high school classmate, reports she has given up the Internet, including Google and email. Life will be simpler for her--as life was in the 1970s. But we will miss her contributions. (Though as of this post, she is still sending!)

The Old Jarhead Blog is your one-stop-shop for political news and conservative opinion. Please forward to friends who need to be informed. These posts are created by many readers who send me items for inclusion, which I would have likely missed or skipped. We owe them thanks and appreciation. I post articles because I think they are of interest and will stimulate thought and discussion. Doing so doesn’t mean that I necessarily agree (or disagree) with every—or any—opinion in the posted article, or that I was able to verify the information presented, which is the responsibility of the author. I try not to post things that are false, too far a stretch, or viciously inflammatory, regardless of the view point, but I don’t always succeed. As always on the Net, as in the legacy media, you must read critically and with skepticism.

If you wish to submit items, the odds of my using them go up if they are formatted--as Kate always did. Title in bold. Then the live URL link. Then "Excerpt: and no more than three sentences from the article, unless the article is very short or the sentences are very long, to keep me with in the fair use guidelines. It's always a judgment call--this is a guideline, not a rule. I attended a seminar where the attorney reported that a guy running a website was hit for $80k, because he used an article. Some major publications have turned copyright enforcement over to law firms who use web search engines to identify usage from the publication, then send a demand for a large payment or a chance to go to court, which will likely cost more even if you win. The attorney said that for an average length article, three sentences are usually safe--though you wouldn't be sure until the judge rules. Sometimes I use longer excerpts where I think the risk is low, perhaps because I know the writer wants to bring traffic to his page. I am not trying to use anyone's copyrighted material--as a writer I get the importance of copyright. I'm trying to give readers a chance to go to the website and read the piece, telling them just enough so they can decide if it is interesting. And, for those who don't know, anything original has an instant copyright as soon as you create it. Registering with the government doesn't create a copyright, only a way to prove it. ~Bob

General News and Comment

Worth Reading: It’s This Bad. By Theodore Dalrmple
Excerpt: Returning briefly to England from France for a speaking engagement, I bought three of the major dailies to catch up on the latest developments in my native land. The impression they gave was of a country in the grip of a thoroughgoing moral frivolity. In a strange inversion of proper priorities, important matters are taken lightly and trivial ones taken seriously. This is not the charming or uplifting frivolity of Feydeau’s farces or Oscar Wilde’s comedies; it is the frivolity of real decadence, bespeaking a profound failure of nerve bound to have disastrous consequences for the country’s quality of life. The newspapers portrayed frivolity without gaiety and earnestness without seriousness—a most unattractive combination. (Published in his book Not with a Bang, but a Whimper: The Politics and Culture of Decline.)

Worth Reading: Police Officer Darren Wilson's Actions - One Perspective. By Andy Weddington

County autopsy: Michael Brown shot 6 times from front, had marijuana in system
Excerpt: An unarmed black teenager had marijuana in his system when he was fatally shot six times by a white police officer, two people familiar with the official county autopsy of Michael Brown said Monday. 9not the result Holder wants, so he's ordered another autopsy. ~Bob)

Missouri governor lifts overnight curfew for St. Louis suburb
Excerpt: Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon on Monday lifted the overnight curfew he imposed on this St. Louis suburb wracked by protests over the fatal police shooting of an unarmed black teenager, saying that the imminent arrival of the National Guard will help restore order.

Ferguson: When stupid and evil reign, it's good to own a gun.
http://www.breitbart.com/InstaBlog/2014/08/16/Ferguson-When-Stupid-and-Evil-Reign-It-s-Good-to-Own-a-Gun
Excerpt: Society has broken down in Ferguson, Missouri. It's not the Zombie Apocalypse but a toxic stew has left law-abiding American citizens helpless. Thank God and the American Constitution some of those citizens own guns. The gentlemen pictured above reportedly guarded their business establishment during last night's rioting. This morning they still have a business. Others weren't so lucky.

A Witness Conversation Unknowingly Captured at the Scene of the Ferguson Shooting is a Game-Changer
Excerpt: The original video poster appears sympathetic to the narrative that Mike Brown was shot unarmed with his hands in the air. But he unknowingly picks up conversation between a man who saw the altercation and another neighbor. An approximate transcription of the background conversation, as related by the “Conservative Treehouse” blog: ... This is terribly important because if Mike Brown had been shot, and he advanced towards the cop instead of surrendering, it would substantiate the narrative that the policeman shot in self-defense due to the fact that he was being threatened with severe bodily harm.

Store owners use their own guns as police back away in Ferguson.
http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2014/08/16/Store-Owners-Use-Their-Own-Guns-As-Police-Back-Away-In-Ferguson
Excerpt:Former St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch tried to explain why the police were hesitant: "You did not see 'police restraint' overnight. You saw police reluctant to act. We cannot keep stoning the keepers at the gate." Store owners continue to rely on their own guns for now, many of which are AR-15s.

Obama's DOJ Silent as New Black Panthers Leader Incites Violence in Ferguson
Excerpt: It appears to me the only racists in this entire thing are the New Black Panthers and their accomplices in the Obama administration. Whatever happened to "not judging a person by the color of their skin but by the content of their character? I thought people like Jesse Jackson was supposed to have been a disciple of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Why is he not speaking out against this kind of talk? It's because he backs it because he and his ilk profit from the demoralization and suffering of the black community. (It's only hate speech if a white person incites violence. ~Bob)

Worth Reading: Is the Criminal Justice System Racist? By John C. Goodman
Excerpt: Neither Klein nor Paul are saying that judges are racists. Or legislators. Or even cops on the beat. What they are saying is that the system has a disparate impact on blacks.
But what Paul surely realizes, if Klein does not, is that most government intervention has a disparate racial impact – including interventions favored by liberals like Klein.
If you started out with the goal of ensuring that our prisons are going to be filled with thousands of young black men, it’s hard to think of anything more effective that trapping poor black children in rotten public schools and then imposing labor market restrictions that prevent them from obtaining entry level jobs.

Iraq, Ferguson, and the 'libertarian moment.' By Timothy P. Carney
Excerpt: The “libertarian moment” has arrived, the New York Times Magazine proclaimed this month, to the guffaws of many liberals and a few conservatives. The other news on today’s front pages – unrest in Ferguson, Mo., and new bloodshed in Iraq – bolsters the claim. Americans may not be eager to abolish the minimum wage, legalize prostitution, or repeal the New Deal, but libertarianism’s warnings today ring truer than ever.

The Elite Liberal Softer Kind of Racism. By Bernard Goldberg
Excerpt: I don’t know what happened in Ferguson, Missouri between the cop and the kid. And neither do you. When I covered hard news I saw cops who crossed the line and I saw kids who started trouble. So let’s not jump to conclusions. But what do you think the reaction in Ferguson would have been if the kid who got shot was black and so was the cop? Or if the kid was white and the cop was black — or white? You think there would have been demonstrations and riots and an onslaught of national media? (According to FBI statistics, blacks murder whites at twice the rate whites murder blacks. Both pale to insignificance to the murder rate of blacks killing blacks. But only whites killing blacks produces outrage or riots. ~Bob)

5 ppl were killed and 27 wounded in Chicago this weekend. Go riot there.

No riots over these deaths? Shootings leave 3 dead, 16 wounded
Excerpt: Three people were killed, including a 16-year-old boy, and sixteen others injured in shootings across the city between late Saturday morning and early Sunday morning, police said.

Excerpt: The riots in St. Louis that have sprung up in response to the police shooting of an unarmed black teenager have cast a spotlight on whether local police departments have too many military-style weapons and other equipment that is intended for use on the battlefield. Since the 1990s, the Pentagon has provided local police with more than $5 billion worth of military equipment it no longer needs, such as assault weapons, body armor, and even tactical vehicles.

Meet the Progressive DA Texas Governor Rick Perry Wanted Removed from the Public Integrity Unit
Excerpt: At around 50 seconds in, District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg threatens to throw her arresting officers in jail. It only gets “better” from there.

Holder Uses Government-Owned Jet To Fly Daughters And Their Boyfriends To Attend Belmont Stakes
Excerpt: That one day trip to Elmont, N.Y. on June 7, according to records provided to TheDC by the Department of Justice, ended up costing the government $14,440. But Holder only had to reimburse the government $955 for flying him and four passengers to the final leg of the Triple Crown horse races that day.

Worth Reading: A Medicare scam that just kept rolling: The government has paid billions to buy power wheelchairs. It has no idea how many of the claims are bogus.
Excerpt: She asked a single question: Had the government ever bought this patient a power wheelchair? No? Then the scam was off and running.

Worth Reading: Trampling on Coal Country Families. By Paul Driessen
Excerpt: Between 1989 and 2010, Congress rejected nearly 700 cap-tax-and-trade and similar bills that their proponents claimed would control Earth’s perpetually fickle climate and weather. So even as real world crises erupt, President Obama is using executive fiats and regulations to impose his anti-hydrocarbon agenda, slash America’s fossil fuel use, bankrupt coal and utility companies, make electricity prices skyrocket, and “fundamentally transform” our economic, social, legal and constitutional system. (Have you looked at your utility bill lately? Despite a mild summer, ours is up quite a bit. And it's going to get worse. ~Bob)

Liberia: Ebola fears rise as clinic is looted
Excerpt: Liberian officials fear Ebola could soon spread through the capital’s largest slum after residents raided a quarantine center for suspected patients and took items including bloody sheets and mattresses.

Lefty Law Professor: That Indictment Against Rick Perry is "Un-American." By Daniel Doherty
Excerpt: "Everybody, liberal or conservative, should stand against this indictment," Dershowitz said. "If you don't like how Rick Perry uses his office, don't vote for him." ... "This is another example of the criminalization of party differences," said Dershowitz, a prominent scholar on United States constitutional law and criminal law who writes the "Legally Speaking" column for Newsmax. "This idea of an indictment is an extremely dangerous trend in America, whether directed at [former House Majority Leader] Tom DeLay or [former President] Bill Clinton."

Rick Perry's Indictment: Completely Political
Some great graphics. ~Bob

This Indictment Of Rick Perry Is Unbelievably Ridiculous. By Jonathan Chait
Excerpt: They say a prosecutor could get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich, and this always seemed like hyperbole, until Friday night a Texas grand jury announced an indictment of governor Rick Perry. The “crime” for which Perry faces a sentence of 5 to 99 years in prison is vetoing funding for a state agency. The conventions of reporting — which treat the fact of an indictment as the primary news, and its merit as a secondary analytic question — make it difficult for people reading the news to grasp just how farfetched this indictment is. (If a drunk officer holder kills your child with a car in Texas, you can thnk the texas Democrats. ~Bob)

No One Cares About Julian Assange Anymore--Good. By James Delingpole
http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-London/2014/08/18/No-one-cares-about-julian-assange
Excerpt: Even his rich celebrity friends - among them Michael Moore, Ken Loach, and Jemima Khan - have gone strangely quiet. (But then, maybe Khan can only deal with one skanky, lefty freak show at a time, and she's got her hands full right now with Russell Brand.) Assange, it seems, is very much yesterday's flavour-of-the-month. The chattering classes have grown bored with their plaything. They need a new exciting cause to show how free-spirited and caring they are. And a smelly bloke who drones on and on, leaps on hapless women, and whose indiscriminate intelligence leaks may well have sent many good men to their deaths and made all our lives that little bit less safe just isn't doing it for them any more.

Federal agencies spend millions on union business. By Kenric Ward
Excerpt: The Internal Revenue Service isn’t the only federal agency where hundreds of employees do union business full-time on the public’s dime. “Taxpayers spent around $156 million on federal employees who did no federal work at all,” said Nathan Mehrens, president of Americans for Limited Government.

Worth Reading: Obama’s Racism for Fun and Profit. By Daniel Greenfield
Excerpt: A crowd gathers. Fists rise in the air. The police deploy. The EBT stores, check cashing places and furniture rental outlets roll down their shutters. A tense hour passes before the scene fades away leaving behind a crude graffiti scrawl of a wannabe gangsta and his favorite pit bull, a few faded color photos and some purple candles guttering in the night underneath his portrait.
Not the full scale rioting, looting and curfews. That’s the sort of thing that doesn’t happen on its own. It has to be community organized into being.

One Month To Scottish Independence Vote, Yes Camp In Tough Fight
Excerpt: With a month to go until Scotland votes on independence from Britain, polls suggest the plan will be defeated, leaving First Minister Alex Salmond and the Yes camp in an uphill battle to secure victory. Salmond has struggled to convince a majority of Scots on the key question: whether Scotland's economy, fuelled by North Sea oil and whisky exports, is strong enough to support independence. Most opinion polls show 45-50 percent support forScotland remaining part of the United Kingdom with backing for independence ranging from 35 to 39 percent.

Liberal billionaire Tom Steyer: 99.5% of Americans are not super-sophisticated.
http://m.cnsnews.com/mrctv-blog/curtis-kalin/liberal-billionaire-995-americans-are-not-super-sophisticated
Excerpt: Coming from a side of the political isle that prides itself on ending “hate” and precluding judgment on those that are not like them, many wealthy liberal activists have been quick to make harsh conclusions about any group of people with whom they disagree. This degree of hypocrisy is rarely topped, but Steyer’s strident defense of the “super sophisticated” 0.5% of America may have reached a new summit of paternalism.

It's time to consider restricting human breeding. By Zoltan Istvan
http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2014-08/14/time-to-restrict-human-breeding
Excerpt: In an attempt to solve this problem and give hundreds of millions of future kids a better life, I cautiously endorse the idea of licensing parents, a process that would be little different than getting a driver's licence. Parents who pass a series of basic tests qualify and get the green light to get pregnant and raise children. Those applicants who are deemed unworthy -- perhaps because they are homeless, or have drug problems, or are violent criminals, or have no resources to raise a child properly and keep it from going hungry -- would not be allowed until they could demonstrate they were suitable parents. (Someone should tell him that the US Birthrate, like most of western civilization, is below the replacement rate on 2.1 live birth per woman. ~Bob)

The Revenge of the Middle Class: I was Obama’s college classmate at Columbia University, where we studied this exact plan that he's been implementing for the past six years. By Wayne Allyn Root
http://townhall.com/columnists/wayneallynroot/2014/08/12/obama-is-about-to-experience-the-revenge-of-the-middle-class-n1877737/page/full
Excerpt: Little by little, the proud middle class is being forced to grovel for government checks or subsidies just to survive. It is not happening by accident, mistake, or coincidence. This is a purposeful plan and it is succeeding. How do I know? I was Obama’s college classmate at Columbia University, where we studied this exact plan that he has been implementing for the past six years. It took a while, but middle class Americans are finally realizing—with friends like Obama, who needs enemies? They’re finally learning to watch what Obama does, not what he says.

Paying people to vote proposed in Los Angeles. By Thomas Lifson
http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2014/08/paying_people_to_vote_proposed_in_lo_angeles.html
Excerpt: Buying votes is illegal, yet the misnamed Los Angeles Ethics Commission is proposing to pay people to vote, in the form of lottery prizes. David Zahniser of the Los Angeles Times reports: Alarmed that fewer than one-fourth of voters are showing up for municipal elections, the Los Angeles Ethics Commission voted Thursday to recommend that the City Council look at using cash prizes to lure a greater number of people to the polls.

Africans Come to America. Hiphop Republican
http://www.hiphoprepublican.com/africans-come-to-america/
Excerpt: Almost nine out of every 10 African Americans would support Obama no matter what, no matter how far America sinks under his leadership, even if they have no jobs and their own lives are in shambles. Seventy percent of Africans say pretty much the same about Obama.

Dennis Kimbro on Black Wealth Creation. Hiphop Republican
http://www.hiphoprepublican.com/dennis-kimbro-on-black-wealth-creation/
Excerpt: In 1955, when Martin Luther King Jnr led the Montgomery Bus boycott, there were only five Black millionaires in the United States. There are now 35,000.

Obamacare News

How Obamacare makes my family less financially secure. By Timothy P. Carney
Excerpt: The costs of these benefits are mostly dispersed widely, and so it's not easy to directly compare the costs to the benefits. But sometimes the costs are pretty measurable. With my own family, for instance, it's easy to see.

HHS HealthCare.gov Official: “Delete this email”
http://sharylattkisson.com/hhs-healthcare-gov-official-delete-this-email/
Excerpt: An email obtained by Congress shows the top official for Healthcare.gov at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services under the Department of Health and Human Services, Marilyn Tavenner, instructed the agency’s top spokesman to “Please delete this email.” The instruction appears significant for several reasons: First, the email to be deleted included an exchange between key White House officials and CMS officials.

KISS: Gene Simmons still feels like an immigrant
http://www.tennessean.com/story/entertainment/2014/07/15/kiss-gene-simmons-still-feels-like-immigrant/12698449/
Excerpt: In the back of my head, it's always, 'Please don't throw me out of your country,'" he said. "It's astonishing when you think about it, that I can come here a first-generation immigrant and you give me as much opportunity as you give your own sons and daughters, I would never take that for granted. That's why I love the military, and when the flag goes up, I shut my mouth. I'm always aware that I'm an outsider."

"You're Greener Than Gore" News

Excerpt: The Environmental Protection Agency’s new proposed rules, which seek to limit carbon emissions from power plants, would cost the American economy $51 billion, as well as 224,000 jobs, every year through 2030, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates. With that significant of an economic impact, one would hope the EPA had a pretty good justification, right? (Part of that $51B will come fro your utility bills. ~bob)

Excerpt: Former Vice President Al Gore has filed a lawsuit against the Middle Eastern media group Al Jazeera, accusing it of fraud and breach of contract in its $500 million purchase of Mr. Gore’s Current TV cable channel.

Religion of Peace News

Excerpt: The Center for Security Policy’s Vice President for Research and Analysis, Clare Lopez, says in this exclusive video interview with The Daily Caller that very few have seemed to care that America switched sides in the global war on terror when President Obama deposed an erstwhile ally in the Middle East and provided weapons to al-Qaida and the Muslim Brotherhood. Focusing on this under-reported, critical shift in American foreign policy, Clare Lopez discusses how an American ambassador and others were killed in Benghazi on the anniversary of 9/11 because the Obama administration decided to promote and defend their narrative that “al-Qaida was on the run,” even as we were outright arming militants affiliated with the terrorist group. Lopez spent 20 years as an undercover operations officer for the CIA.

US launches airstrikes to help retake large Iraq dam captured by Islamic State
Excerpt: The United States on Saturday launched several more air strikes in Iraq at Islamic State, including ones targeting members of the Islamic militant group who are positioned around the country’s largest dam, near Irbil. Islamic State captured the Mosul Dam last month in its surprisingly swift and deadly run across northern Iraq in recent months.

The Common Enemy. By George Packer
Excerpt: The Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham controls thirty-five thousand square miles of land, an area the size of Jordan. The self-proclaimed caliphate stretches from the newly conquered towns along the Syrian-Turkish border, through its de-facto capital of Raqqa, in northern Syria, across the obliterated Iraqi border into Mosul, Tikrit, and Falluja, down to the farming towns south of Baghdad—roughly a third of the territory of both countries. It is exploiting almost every oil and gas field in Syria; it has seized Iraq’s largest refinery, in Baiji, and its biggest dam, north of Mosul, which provides water and electricity for much of the country and could, if destroyed, submerge Baghdad. (There are hopeful notes in this article, about various forces finally coming together to oppose ISIS, and not just with words. This is a golden opportunity for Pres. Obama to actually become a leader in the world again. But that would mean really coming off the fence, away from the golf course and the fundraisers, and making some hard decisions, and going to Congress and asking for the support for sending a flood of aid to the Kurds, and a flood of US air power to really damage ISIS assets everywhere they can be found. It can be done, it needs to be done, but will he do it? I really don't know. --Del)

Decorated British army chief accuses Hamas of war crimes.
http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-London/2014/08/18/UK-General-Praises-Israeli-Restraint
Excerpt: "I’ve been there [in Israel and Gaza] for four weeks. I’ve watched closely what’s happening [in this conflict]. Hamas have used the two weapons at their disposal, and they have only two weapons. Those weapons are not rockets and are not attack tunnels ... they could not hope to defeat the might of the state of Israel with her allies around the world using rockets and attack tunnels. They did not intend to defeat the State of Israel, they know they couldn’t. So what were their weapons? Human shields – their own old men, women, babies and children to be sacrificed for their own purposes. And lies and propaganda.

In Iraq, captured Yazidi women fear the Islamic State will force them to wed
Excerpt: Hundreds of Yazidi women who were captured by Islamic extremists during their sweep through the town of Sinjar are being incarcerated at scattered locations across northern Iraq in what increasingly looks like a deliberate attempt to co-opt them into service as the wives of fighters. (The Holy Qur'an allows sex slavery. It is the unchangeable word of Allah, as revealed by the prophet Mohammad (PBUH), who kept sex slaves and is the perfect example of conduct for Muslims today. It's not just a good idea--it's the shari'a law. ~Bob)

Obama Administration Delays Arms Shipments to Israel… as it Confirms Advanced Arms Sales to Turkey and Qatar. By Joseph Gelman

How to Write About Israel. By Daniel Greenfield

Excerpt: Writing about Israel is a booming field. No news agency, be it ever so humble, can avoid embedding a few correspondents and a dog's tail of stringers into Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, to sit in cafes clicking away on their laptops, meeting up with leftist NGO's and the oppressed Muslim of the week. At a time when international desks are being cut to the bone, this is the one bone that the newshounds won't give up. Wars can be covered from thousands of miles away, genocide can go to the back page, but, when a rock flies in the West Bank, there had better be a correspondent with a fake continental accent and a khaki shirt to cover it.

Who watches the watchers? By Steven Emerson
Excerpt: We know from past history the demonstrable manifestation of the vitriolic anti Israeli (and some might add anti-Semitic) bias by nearly all of these organizations clamoring to declare Israel guilty of war crimes, as they have repeatedly accused Israel in the past of everything from massive human rights violations to war crimes to genocide. No other country in the world - even those like the Sudan, North Korea and Iran - who have committed genuine massive human rights violations - have ever been the object of such massive condemnations as Israel has selectively been.

UK Consul General to Jerusalem appears wearing Arab keffiyeh branding Israel as Free Palestine, MP calls for heads to roll

Excerpt: A picture has emerged of the British Consul General to Jerusalem wearing an Arab Keffiyeh (scarf) with the Palestinian flag draped over the entirety of the State of Israel and the Palestinian territories. The image depicted on the scarf is the one used by protesters and belligerents in the region who wish to see the State of Israel wiped off the map. The picture of Dr Alastair McPhail is from the Islamic Relief Palestine website, and depicts the inauguration of the Health Professions Lab at Al-Azhar University, a facility which was co-funded by Islamic Relief and the British Consulate.

In a 31-page agreement with the Department of Justice, the Crestwood School District in Dearborn Heights says it “shall take appropriate action to overcome language barriers that impede equal and meaningful participation by” students with limited English skills.
