Update
I'm still holding my own. Still at 1 lpm O2 in PT Rehab. FEV
numbers still playing yo-yo, but not too bad even on the down days compared to
a month ago. Feeling good, getting out and about.
Too many emails today to get through them all. Sorry. Plus
we've been having Internet connection problems, up then down, which delayed my
email retrieval--I could get on other websites, but not Google. Reooting got me
back on G-mail--at least for now. So will post what I can. I'll try to get to
the other 100 emails or so over the weekend and will include anything still
relevant in my next post.
Long post today, but a
lot of not-to-be-missed news and comment. ~Bob
General News and Comment
Excerpt: The outrage is palpable and the increasing
realization by the average American that they really, truly are now living in
an Orwellian surveillance state has been an eye-opening experience for many
across the fruited plain. ... We already have proof that powerful
agencies of the federal government deliberately, under orders from Washington , harassed and
targeted specific people and groups that were ideological opponents of the
current administration. The vast powers of the state were used as political
weapons against its enemies on a wide scale and possibly affected the outcome
of the last presidential election.
DHS contractor
suffers major computer breach, officials say
Excerpt: A major U.S. contractor that conducts
background checks for the Department of Homeland Security has suffered a
computer breach that probably resulted in the theft of employees’ personal
information, officials said Wednesday. The company, USIS, said in a statement
that the intrusion “has all the markings of a state-sponsored attack.”
Excerpt: Politicians who win campaigns, no matter how
dirty, will almost always kiss and make up with their political opponents
in their election-night speeches. Rep. Justin Amish (R-Mitch.), of course, is
not your average politician. After defeating a Chamber of Commerce-backed
candidate in his primary by 14 percentage points on Tuesday, the Ron Paul
ally set about settling a few scores. (Well, we supposedly want
politicians who say what they think, not PC pabulum. ~Bob)
‘Serious
limitations’: Gov’t watchdogs unite in letter slamming Obama administration
transparency
Excerpt: Dozens of government watchdogs are sounding the
alarm that the Obama administration is stonewalling them, in what is being
described as an unprecedented challenge to the agencies they're supposed to
oversee. Forty-seven of the government's 73 independent watchdogs known
as inspectors general voiced their complaints in a letter to congressional leaders this
week. They accused several major agencies -- the Justice Department, the Peace
Corps and the chemical safety board -- of imposing "serious limitations on
access to records."
The vast left-wing conspiracy: 1,000-Member Secret
Progressive Journalist Group Uncovered
Excerpt: A prominent CNN commentator, the top two political
reporters for The Huffington Post, a Reuters reporter, the editor of The Nation
magazine, a producer for Al Jazeera America television, a U.S.
News & World Report columnist, and approximately two dozen Huffington Post
contributors are among the more than 1,000 members of Gamechanger
Salon. Founded by leftwing activist Billy Wimsatt, the group is a
secretive digital gathering of writers, opinion leaders, activists and
political hands who share information, ideas and strategy via a closed Google
group. The group’s existence was discovered by Media Trackers
through an open records request filed with a University of Wisconsin professor
who happened to be a member of the network.

Excerpt: American politics and campaign finance tactics have undergone a seismic shift in the past four years. This shift has occurred largely in the wake of several critical Supreme Court and lower court rulings that effectively blew open the floodgates of campaign spending and eliminated virtually any meaningful limitation on who could contribute and how much they could give. Those landmark rulings, including the 2010 Citizens United v. FEC and last April’s McCutcheon v. FEC, prohibit the government from restricting political independent expenditures by corporations, associations or labor unions. They lifted overall limits on the amount that any one donor can give to candidates, parties and political action committees in any election cycle.

Democrats have
audacity to attack Ernst’s money. By Mark Winkel, Waukee, Letter to the Editor
I was recently contacted by the Joni Ernst campaign asking
me to come out and support her at the State Fair on Aug. 8. It was simply one
Iowan asking another to come out in support, if they had the time. The anti-gun
special interest group Mothers Demand Action is also making calls about seeing
Joni Ernst on Aug. 8. They are offering to pay for parking, admission, food and
giving you a free T-shirt to protest Joni Ernst. Yet the Democrats have the
audacity to run attack ads about Joni Ernst’s money from special interests
groups. There will be two groups there to see Joni Ernst speak. Only one has
been paid to be there.
Single Motherhood and
Wealth
Excerpt: In an interview with Kimberly Gedeon of
MadameNoire.com, Aparna Mathur, resident scholar at the American Enterprise
Institute, explains why single mothers are more likely to be poor. Data from
the Pew Research Center
suggests that single mothers tend to be younger, are less likely to have an
education and are more likely to be black or Hispanic. The numbers are
staggering: According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and
Development, 72 percent of black children are born to single mothers. Fifty-five
percent of black children live in single-parent homes, in contrast to 21
percent of white children that live in single-parent homes. Mathur explains
that marriage rates -- while they have fallen for both blacks and whites over
the last half-century -- have dropped dramatically for black Americans. And
research data indicates that women who grow up in poor families and who
perceive a lack of economic opportunity are more likely to settle for having
children outside of marriage. Compared to married mothers, single mothers make
significantly less money. Using data from the 2012 Current Population Survey,
Mathur calculated the income disparity between married and single women:
Bus Systems Are More
Cost Effective than Rail Transit
Excerpt: Inspired by the prospect of federal funding, 30
cities across the nation are building rail transit lines. Unfortunately, the
new rail lines are expensive and offer little additional carrying capacity. Randal
O'Toole of the Cato Institute has an alternative to rail transit: "rapid
bus" systems. Such a bus system would be speedy and convenient. Running
from neighborhoods into the downtown areas of cities, buses could reach more
people than rail lines and transport more people for less money: Rail lines are
limited in their ability to serve multiple areas, whereas buses can reach many
more individuals throughout a city: A four-line light rail system can bring
36,000 people into a city's downtown center, while O'Toole gives the example of
a rapid bus system that could bring in 140,000 per hour. A rapid bus system
could offer more frequent, faster service with less need for transfers. Buses
are more comfortable: When operating at capacity, more than half of the
passengers on a rail line must stand. Yet two-thirds to three-fourths of bus
riders can sit during transport. A rapid bus system is much less expensive to
maintain than a rail system. O'Toole shows why it is much cheaper to develop a
rapid bus system instead of rail lines: The average urban area requires 52
miles of rail lines, and the average cost of one mile of rail line is about
$100 million, for a total of $5.2 billion. In comparison, the capital costs for
a high-frequency rapid bus system would only be $110 million.

Slain Border Patrol
Agent's Blood 'On Hands Of Congress And President,' Says Union
Excerpt: The murder
of an off-duty Border Patrol agent in front of his entire family has sparked
outrage within the Border Patrol community. The murder occurred at the hands of illegal aliens — one of whom had been
deported four times prior — according to authorities, near the town

mother, father, wife, and two kids approximately 40 miles inside the U.S. when
the pair of illegal aliens allegedly targeted them for armed robbery.
The murdered BP agent.
By Jim Geraghty, Morning Jolt
Excerpt: Let's face it, a murdered U.S. Border Patrol agent
isn't necessarily something new for this administration. We'll
have to wait and see if the gun used in this crime was one from Fast &
Furious. The unsecure border is an entirely theoretical problem for most of our
political class. Lawmakers rarely if ever encounter illegal immigrants, much
less dangerous ones, on Capitol Hill, or at their high-dollar fundraisers.
Illegal immigrants don't climb over the fence of Camp David
or the White House. The president isn't likely to run into many illegal
immigrants in his upcoming two-week vacation at Martha's Vineyard. This
administration likes to brag about the number of deportations going up, but as
the example of these men show, a deportation doesn't mean much if, after they
arrive in their home country, they can just turn around and cross the border
into the United States .
We need a border that is difficult to breach; otherwise our deportation policy
amounts to a revolving door.

feature story on Mexican drug cartels. When he mentioned that over 5,600
remains have been found along the south Texas
oil pipelines that got my attention and I did a little digging for you.
Here's what I learned from reading several different sources on this
problem....still another problem that I knew absolutely nothing about.
And yes, still more sad and frightening stories from our neighbors
to the south. There are thousands of miles of oil pipelines snaking their
way from south Texas
oil fields north to the state's heartland. These many "pipeline
highways" run across private ranch land. So one day last week a
rancher was riding back to the house and saw her German Shepherds playing with
what she thought was a soccer ball. When she approached closer she was aghast
to see her dogs were playing with a human head...what was left of a red headed
woman who was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Excerpt: That title is a quote from former Ambassador Ryan
Crocker, quoted in Peter Baker's fine piece in Friday's New York
Times' on the president's decision to sort-of, kind-of, maybe strike
against ISIS. Baker's quote of Crocker, who served as President George W.
Bush's Ambassador to Iraq
and President Obama's Ambassador to Afghanistan ,
is worth reading in its entirety: “This
is about America ’s national
security,” said Ryan Crocker, who was ambassador to Iraq
under Mr. Bush and to Afghanistan
under Mr. Obama. “We don’t understand real evil, organized evil, very well.
This is evil incarnate. People like Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi,” the ISIS leader, “have been in a fight for a decade. They are
messianic in their vision, and they are not going to stop.” (No one today
wants to hear words like "evil". That's just so passe in this
world. Or at least, that's how the PC and gentle world Liberals
think. They may admit that the "Final Solution" of the Nazis
was evil, but that was then, this is now. But evil is not a thing that just
goes out of style and becomes obsolete in humanity. It's part of the
world, if you're religious it's a consequence of our fallen nature and the
machinations of Satan, if you're nonreligious it's just something that repeats
when some subsection of a society loses the capacity for compassion and slides
into fanaticism for some ideology. But to deny its existence is the
ostrich act taken to an extreme. It's more than time to look at extreme
fundamentalist Islam as a force for evil, not one scintilla less awful than the
SS was or the NKVD or the Imperial Japanese Army in WW2. And thus it's
time for all the West, but most certainly this nation, to recognize it and take
it seriously and start taking serious steps to destroy it. So far we
aren't doing very well with this. --Del )

is a free e-newletter. It is well worth going to the above address and

"this" was a link to an article in the Washington Post about the plight
of the Yazidis, trapped on a mountaintop. ... Anyway, the tweet was simply part
of a whole plague of prattle from an army of argle-barglers that seem to think they're taking a
bold moral stance by aiming all of their attention on people with no power to
make any decisions. Trapped on a mountaintop by savages who make the Thuggees
seem civilized, watching their children die of thirst, presented with the
choice of renouncing their faith (and being condemned to Hell by doing so) or
execution (for the men; slavery for the women), no doubt the Yazidis were
deeply gratified when they got word that Mike Barnicle had taken to Twitter to
hold accountable a man who can do nothing for them. Nothing takes the pain out
of slow death, genocide, and seeing your wives and daughters carried off into
slavery more than the firm knowledge that fingers are being pointed thousands
of miles away at men who've been in retirement for five years. Heaven forbid
Barnicle tweet "Make Barack Obama read this" or even "Make Joe
Biden read this" (which would require his drawing in the margins of
the Washington Post article pictures of flying saucers shooting each
other. "Pew-pew! Boom! Good article."). After all, Obama is the actual
president of the United
States . He could actually do something to
help the Yazidis. Let us stipulate — at least for the sake of
argument — that the First Cause of Iraq's unraveling was the Iraq
War. That doesn't change the fact that the second, third, fourth, fifth, and
nth causes of the chaos are the result, directly or indirectly, of President
Obama's decisions (or indecisions). Obama chose to pull troops out of Iraq
as quickly as possible. Obama chose to dismiss ISIS
as the "jayvee squad" this year. Obama chose to issue a
"red line" ultimatum, then chose to say "never mind." The
guy has been president for five years. And yet to listen to him and his
defenders he's been utterly powerless to undo his predecessors' mistakes, real
or alleged. It's like these people think the twice-elected president of the United States
is still new to the job. Now that events in Iraq have descended from
"urgent" to"Hieronymus Bosch," Obama has finally acted,
and I am glad for it. Let us send as much aid as we can to the Yazidis; if in
the process, we kill a lot of ISIS
fighters, that'll be a nice bonus. But there's a common theme to Obama's
foreign policy and Barnicle's rodent flatulence. They both work on the
assumption that global events are things that happen out there.

historic Muslim states, often in the same paragraph it teaches about dhimmis
