Two
excellent offerings from Tom Kratman
I
apologize to my readers. I read these excellent books a while ago, and put them
aside to write reviews on. They got buried in the detritus of my life. My
enforced quarantine cleared some away, and there they were. Kratman, if you don’t
know is a retired Army LtCol, and the best military science fiction writer
since Heinlein.
Terra Nova: The Wars
of Liberation
edited by Tom Kratman
This collection of
short stories by many authors, including Kratman, is a prequal to his best-selling
Carrera series. It covers how Terra Nova was founded, settled, and began to rebel
against the UN and old Earth. The colonists, representing every nationality,
political view and faith on the home planet, naturally resume killing each
other as they did here. I loved every story. The only thing I found to nitpick
was the English writer who has a Scots nanny exclaiming “ach” instead of “och”
as it is spelled and pronounced in Scotland. Och weel, it’s a wee thing, dinna fash
yoursel. Kratman and science fiction fans will not be disappointed.
Big
Boys Don't Cry by Tom Kratman

This
excellent novella by Kratman s not only entertaining, but it raises important
questions about out growing dependence on AI. Can a battle tank powered by AI
develop emotions and character traits like empathy, honor, and anger? A scary
look at the future.
