Europe’s Retrenchment in the Wake of Brexit
Excerpt: The cynic will often overestimate the forces of inevitability, immobility, and kinetic power. In so doing he will be exposed for his eternal pessimism, while the optimist runs his victory lap. Yet even as the cynic is little more than an idealist who has been burned by reality too many times, he too gets to savor the taste of slaying that which was once thought unbeatable. The class James Burnham called the “Managers,” those definers and keepers of “norms,” have taken quite the beating these past few years. [This is Part 1 of 2 parts, a very in-depth look at how the political and economic relationships of the remaining European Union countries are likely to react and recover from Brexit. The hole in the EU’s budget alone is going to take some serious negotiating as the UK’s portion was substantial. It will likely require some adjustments for those "debtor nations" of southern Europe. The political, intelligence, and military realignment will also be interesting. I’m looking forward to reading the second part. Ron P.]
