The Circle by Dave Eggers
I read
this frightening novel for the “Right Book club” to which I belong. I can’t say
I enjoyed it, because it is so easy to see it happening, and to an advocate of
individual liberty, chilling. But it’s well-written and certainly held my
interest. Imagine that Facebook, Twitter, Google, Amazon and every social media
site and search engine are joined in one company. That can track anyone, find
anyone, monitor anyone and, if necessary, destroy anyone through the
development of vast new technologies. One of the founders sees the danger to
individual freedom and attempts to stop it by winning over the main character.
A very scary message about an all-too-possible future.
