In June 2014, the Army released a request for proposal to invite gun companies to build compact versions of the service’s 7.62mm M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System. (So the main idea was to make it blend in with all the other small arms people are carrying? But it's going to be more accurate with a shorter barrel and fire the same round but have less recoil? Those are great tricks! The Marines did an easier thing, they had a bunch of M-14 rifles selected from storage, accurized, fitted with good scopes, and every platoon has a sharpshooter with one of them. No, they don't look like the M-4 at all. They're good for shots out to maybe 800 meters, which is very handy in the terrain of Afghanistan . And they cost a whole lost less than the $12K each for this new rifle. Hell, if you don't insist on semi-auto function (not really essential for sniper work) there are all kinds of really good, high quality rifles in good calibers (7mm Mag for one) made right in the USA that are good for 1000 meters and again, cost a lot less. Apparently cost effectiveness is not a big deal for the Army right now. I wonder how many snipers with field experience they asked about all this. -Del. Apparently length isn't as important to accuracy as stiffness of the barrel. However, this is kind of stupid. Partly this is because they're saying "sniper" - who tends to operate either on his own or as part of a very small team - with designated marksman - who sticks close to his unit.
